The PC Gamer Top 100

PC Gamer just posted their yearly list of the best 100 games you can play on PC today.

The ‘today’ part is crucial: these are games from across the history of PC gaming that you can still enjoy playing in 2016.

Top 10

10. Skyrim
9. GTA V
8. Rocket League
7. Portal
6. Metal Gear Solid V
5. Dishonored
4. Mass Effect 2
3. Half-Life 2
2. Dark Souls
1. The Witcher 3

Love Half Life 2, but putting it third on games you can still enjoy playing today in 2016 seems to be far too generous.

Oblivion higher than WoW, FF14, Starcraft II, League of Legends, & Diablo III?

Wow, it gets worse every year. It's like a list written by 16-year-olds who didn't play PC games until some guys on YouTube were like "mastur raec amirite."

Also, not having Alpha Centauri on the list but including Civ V only proves my point further.

Dark Souls is too high in this list for its own good compared to many other great games on PC. Replace that with XCOM 2

I object to the bingo free space middle being about dragon age 2, but the most ain't bad.

That said, Planescape:Torment deserves a high spot. On phone, can't see the list at the moment.

that bingo image bothers me more than the list

It's like they take into consideration the internet's opinions and then just throw them in the trash

list seems a bit mixed up. dark souls, mass effect 2 and metal gear solid 5 should be lower if they even should be on the list and dishonored should be higher. lacking deus ex and portal 2 should replace portal 1.

Any PC list without UFO Defence as #1 is automatically a joke.

Also why are your spoiler tagging lists? What's the spoiler here? That it sucks?

Yep. Looks like the perfect list to me. Anyone else who disagrees with my opinion in this thread is wrong and should be thrown in the trash with their garbage opinions.

I'd post the rest without spoiler tags but they didn't compile everything into a single page.

Only problems I have are Skyrim and ME2, completely mediocre when they came out and even worse now.

Besides HL2, Skyrim and ME2 are the only games with extremely dated graphics. Skyrim practically requires mods to be playable now.

61. Diablo II

58. BioShock Infinite
45. Guild Wars 2
42. Terraria
39. Her Story
37. Fallout 4

32. Diablo III

27. Rainbow Six Siege
12. Dota 2

It's not the games that are included on the list - it's probably one of the best representations of the available PC games out there - but the rankings are just straight wack.

Continuous painting of Diablo 3 as a profoundly great game worthy of prominence, especially over its predecessor, continues to be baffling.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
On New Vegas:

Shaun: To an increasingly loud minority, it’s the best modern Fallout. It’s not hard to understand why: Obsidian’s take on the formula focused on all the best parts of classic Fallout—the weirdness, the substantial narrative branching paths, the humour—and made good on a promise that Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 struggled to deliver. It also lacked the hammy grandiosity of the other two games. There’s less dissonance between the urgency of the main story and your optional dalliances with Deathclaw extermination, and you have a lot more agency when it comes to how that bigger picture resolves.

Phil: It is just set in a big desert, though, isn’t it? At least Fallout 4 ’s got a few green patches.
Dammit Phil.

MGS V was their best game of 2015 but now witcher 3 is their No.1 of all time. Shouldn't MGS V be at least close to No. 1 or something

Strange that RE4 jumped up so high. Was this due to the second PC release?
When I saw Mass Effect as high as it was, I thought "Hmm, surely Mass Effect 2 is going to be pretty high up there...".
:)

Also, Dark Souls > TW3, but I guess close enough.

Diablo 2 is very ugly on modern computers, and Diablo 3 is a much better game than its first year of release. Hopefully if they ever do decide to remaster Diablo 2, they won't "enhance it" too much with gameplay alterations. This isn't a list of "what games were the best when they were first released".

I find most games at least from the early Windows era onwards are still enjoyable because they're not tied to old technology (so no blocky warped textures or fuzzy anti aliasing or super chuggy framerates) and the ones that still aren't so playable tend to have mods or even entire source ports to bring them up to speed. Even something as simple as being able to rebind keys in DOSbox is huge.

PC gaming! :)

Fucking thank you! I may not agree with the ordering but I greatly appreciate that they made nostalgia non-factor.

Durante should have a paragraph at the end seeing as they've claimed Dark Souls is the second most enjoyable PC game in 2016.

The Witcher 3 has since had two large DLC packs and a plethora of updates while MGSV is basically the same game.

I don't want to be mentioned in an article which includes DA2 in a top 100, unless it's a top 100 most disappointing sequels.

Even though I liked it overall, there are so many ways that I can pick The Witcher 3 apart that it almost beggars belief that folks out there would herald it as the greatest game of all time (imo). But opinions I guess. And you can do the same for pretty much any other game that isn't Tetris I suppose.

I'm amazed the game didn't get called out more on its reliance of the whole find-miniscule-glowy-red-thing-within-this-great-big-circle mechanic though. Holy shit did that grow old 20 hours in.

Dishonored is amazing.

Does that count as a kill?

"The best PC games you can play today."

I went back to Alpha Centauri recently and it was super archaic. Did the same with one of my all-time favorites, Thief II, last year to find that it had finally rotted. I think it's a really interesting list of games people would actually choose to play shorn of nostalgia.

Edit: Oh. Never mind. The terrible The Witcher III is in the number one slot. Burn it all down.
