Super Mario Run announced for iOS (Android later), Dec 2016, Screens/Info in OP

At first I was a bit skeptical when they announced this, but eventually the interest grew on how it would be more akin to the Rayman iOS games and the Android release much later on.

I'm curious for now, but I won't make my approach to this until the Android release.

I hope you can customize it so Mario is a helicopter running through a cave, you know for crappy flash game circa 2000 nostalgia

So, why is the screen vertical? 40% of the screen is the ground texture in most of these shots.

What do game companies have against phones being held sideways? Y'know, so it more closely resembles a TV while giving you more room in a game that moves horizontally?

More than likely for performance concerns. They also may have preferred the way the game controlled with one hand more.

Meant to be played one-handed.

The real estate at the bottom of the screen is the jump panel. It allows for users to play the game with one hand, and makes it less prone to be missed like on screen buttons in other games. Its a great idea if you ask me.

One-handed use. My guess is it's a concession to the local Japanese market, where mobile use on trains (standing up, holding onto pole) is very high.

I don't know, what phone with an upgraded enough OS to be able to download this, can't run it smoothly? What phone nowadays is not stronger than a Nintendo DS? I bet you that my outdated HTC EVO from 2010 (I have since upgraded) can run it.
Meant to be played one-handed.
In your honest opinion, is that a good trade off for not having the screen horizontal? I ask because it seems like a ton of people prefer to record videos with the phone vertical and that makes no sense either.

Ok, I'll buy that.

Maybe this too.

I loved the pun Miyamoto made of "You can play this game with one hand while eating an apple with the other one!" So pure :')

Nintendo is making some really great and efficient marketing choices lately. Hope that continues with the NX announcement. (please announce the damn thing now?)

Yeah it truly feels like they finally getting their stuff together in terms of IP recognition and licencing. So far it's doing wonders. Right now for example Mario and gang appear on Dorito bags here in Mexico lmao

Nintendo nailed this because Doritos is one of the most popular snacks here in Mexico. Tons of brand recognition will get for sure.

Made an absolute ass of himself (even more than usual) by editing old posts to win an argument when someone called him out on something. Got his mod status removed and probably disappeared in shame.

Yeh I remember that incident but he still used to post a fair bit after that. Oh well.

Why are people upset about this? Unless I missed something, NX is still coming and will 100% have a new 2d or 3d (likely both) mario. This is just Nintendo's way of grabbing some of that mobile money.

People are upset about this because the Wii U and 3DS have been in a year long drought. and rightfully upset.

But hey, 3DS is getting remakes of old Dragon Quest games soonish!

It means there will be no more exclusives for Nintendo hardware.

Exclusives war is over, and it upsets some people. Perhaps.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
Just realized that on Nintendo's Japanese site, iOS/Android is listed right along the other Nintendo platforms. Right under Wii U, 3DS, and Amiibo, in that order.

What a time to be alive.

Because Nintendo fans are shitting on anything and everything Nintendo does right now, because they haven't announced the NX.

Think it's based on an old Amir0x post about FFXIII coming to 360. Speaking of which, whatever happened to him?

EDIT: Seems he doesn't post (much?) on the Gaming side anymore

Well you don't have to since it's not an "endless" runner :p

I think Amir0x was banded due to an outburst on a Trump thread on other "Off-Topic" side of the site....

Pokemon Go opened their eyes.

People who said this, do you really think Nintendo saw Pokemon Go's success in July and went "oh shit we should've tried with Mario!" and magically conjured a game in less than 2 months? I mean they have been saying they're making mobile games and all no IP is off the table.

I expected this to be some lame Temple Run clone with Mario seeing the title but 2D Mario was a good call.

If Nintendo is developing this themselves, and it feels like Mario physics, it could be a great "runner" game.

Having auto run levels on NES Remix trying to speed run levels was a blast and challenging as well.

Miyamoto confirmed that Nintendo's Super Mario team is developing this title. So I feel fairly positive about this turning out to be a fun title. Nintendo certainly doesn't want to screw up their first mobile game.

Nintendo is going to single-handedly raise people's standards for iOS and Android game quality with stuff like this. They're going to stomp out a lot of smaller devs without even meaning to, just because they know what they're doing and their quality standards are higher than anyone else putting out stuff on the platform.

Nintendo delayed Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing to make Super Mario Run. They must be feeling the pressure to make profit NOW from their mobile games and/or changed strategy after Miitomo didn't take off.

"People won't buy real Mario if they can play mobile Mario" seems like a poor argument after Pokemon GO increased Pokemon sales.

Obviously a lot of people will be satisfied to just play SMR, but... those people were never going to buy a real Mario anyway, so having at least a chance to make money off of those people is an improvement for Nintendo. And like with Pokemon GO, at least some of the people who play this will probably want to move on to a real Mario game.
I think increased Pokemon sales are an eye opener but they are not necessarily going to be the norm.

It makes people less inclined to play it on impulse if they have to readjust themselves to get into it.

This is a very bad move by Nintendo. If I can play Mario on my phone, why would I ever buy their consoles? Good job killing the NX before it's even out Nintendo.

I guess Nintendo really is its own worst enemy

If you'd be happy playing Mario on phone only, then you were never going to buy a Nintendo device in the first place.

Nintendo's made a plethora of baffling decisions lately, but everything about this sounds great, as well as Miyamoto delivering it firsthand.

I'M so hyped for this. A runner Mario was something I've always wanted. I hope they bring their AAA game to level design.

If all the scenes shown are from the first 3/4 stages I'm excited for the level design. I thought this would be a dumb timewaster but the design is giving me nice Rayman vibes with all the multiple paths through the stage, triggers, and the mechanics they seem to be introducing in (seemingly) every level. What I think is 1-2 already features major examples of Wall Jumping for secrets, what I think is 1-4 adds the backflip panels/ceiling ladders, stop-signs... Heck, it was not needed at all but the fact that they got different animations for jumps and ledge grabs show that they're going beyond just the 'laws' 2D Mario established and I actually really look forward to this. Hope some levels later on are more faster paced though, haha.

Nintendo wasting their time and franchises on trivial bullshit, I thought it was an obvious enough trend

To be fair Super Mario Run will make bank

U are killing ur own argument lol.

If the game is going to make a bank, then it is not wasting their time lol.

This was so obvious that I'm surprised Nintendo actually went with a Mario runner. It seems like one of those obvious choices where they would ordinarily do the opposite of common sense and reason.

This will make insane bank.

Looks interesting.

Whoever suggested Wario WAre for mobile is a damn genius. One of the best games to go mobile.

Animal Crossing would be BEAST on mobile. Animal Crossing is probably an NX system seller title though.

this game compares to NSMBU or Mario Maker?
