Two years later, how do you feel about Smash 4?

My favourite by default due to the sheer amount of characters with varied playstyles even if I still missed out on a few wanted characters I really expected to make the cut this time.

Stages are a real mess though, it's like choosing between an overload of gimmicks and awkward layouts or a flat flavourless omega stage. In general things like stage hazards and Assist Trophies are more potent than ever to a rather silly degree.

Online is still handled kinda like arse, sure it's a big step up from Brawl but in general the options feel limiting. Assuming the rumoured Switch port happens that will almost certainly take the Wii U versions place but I do hope they refine the numerous rough edges of Smash 4 in general.
Though I'm probably setting myself up for a bit of disappointment on this front.

Part of me wishes Nintendo would release the poll results of "realizable choices". Then again, that would probably result in murder.

It's good, but it has problems with the obnoxious stage hazards, continually transitioning stages, and not enough hit stun. It's not as fun to watch or play as melee.

Yeah, I really want that hazard toggle in the Switch version.

- Smash Tour sucks
- Too many FE characters
- Dark Pit, Lucina and Dr. Mario should be costumes like Alph
- No Offline Tourney

Other than that it's awesome

I felt like

they botched the single player content completely

completely wasted the time and resources with the terribad implementation of custom moves

meh amiibo support

Left out hazard toggles to spite the competitive scene

garbage stages with "lol make them flat" as the only compromise

floaty, campy gameplay

Items are more intense than ever, and really hugely influence the fight instead of a temporary weapon

made two separate studios to make the exact same game on two completely different platforms. Complete waste. Wii U lost characters for the 3DS version, but the 3DS version got all the reasonable stages for the most part

The 3DS version came out first and the Wii U had nothing to 1-up it that wasn't half-baked.

Why are custom stages still in

Online had a poor selection with my only options being ffa timed items on actual stages or nothing with stocks on flat tables

All the characters look like toys in a bland Pixar aesthetic

My biggest complaint is that the guy who puts himself at the helm of the game still is intent on making it Mario party instead of a fun accessible fighter with a high skill ceiling.

Not saying the game is objectively bad, but i was really let down. It just isn't really that great at all. It's a very very good sequel to Brawl, instead of a great smash game in its own right IMO. That said, it did cause a reproduction of GameCube controllers and the existence of great official USB GameCube ports, so I LOVE it for that!!!

A step down from Brawl in literally every way but roster size and visuals.

I should note that my circle of friends actually play competitively, so my experience my differ heavily from your own.

3DS killed ice climbers but portable smash was awesome

Wii u version was also great and the characters were so good
Just needed a subspace type mode, I loved it on brawl even though lots hated it

Bring on smash DX for switch

Other than missing Ice Climbers and Wolf, it's the best game in the series, in my opinion. The roster is unbelievable. The graphics are fantastic. And it's an incredibly fun and amazing game.

I usually play once or twice a week.

Yeah I'm going to have to disagree because Brawl is a terrible game. Extremely slow character movement, random tripping, meta knight shenanigans, etc. From a competitive standpoint it is pretty much universally panned as the worst in the series but I can see how a casual player would feel differently.

Its the best in the series. But its the least amount of time I have put into a Smash game. Something is off with it. After the first two weeks it came out, I didn't really have any desire to go back and play it. Even my Smash Bros group of friends, when they would come over we wouldn't play it and did something else instead.

Still my disappointment of the gen. It's a step up from Brawl, but that's not saying very much. General gameplay is still far too boring, floaty, and forgiving and them botching single player modes and For Glory doesn't help either.

Huge improvement over Brawl. Played competitively up until last Evo then quit when it became apparent that none of the characters I think are fun were gonna get buffed. Still could have used a little more hitstun and less landing lag. Overall, I still think it favors defense a little too much. Would have preferred a smalled starting roster with more DLC for an equivalent price because it took an eternity to build matchup knowledge.

Solid entry, wouldn't call it the best, but certainly a return to form for the series.

Smash Tour finishing with a character per stock mode inaccessible anywhere else in the game was maddening, "new" feature for Switch please!

I don't really grasp the game enough at a competitive level to really determine if I'm right with this next point but the defensive aspects of the game like rolling seem too potent at times.

Yeah, I really want that hazard toggle in the Switch version.

A number of stages could be salvaged through this, Pyrosphere, Wily Castle, maybe a version of the DKCR stage where it's just the back area (and not zoomed out), NSMBU without Nabbit and sticking with the grass land and so on. Same for some 3DS stages.
Alas there'd still be too many walk off stages for my liking.
Smash 4 is sooo close to being truly fantastic, it just has a few shortcomings that seem odd to have occurred in the grand scheme of things.

I personally hated Brawl when it came out after Melee. But after playing Smash 4 and returning to brawl....no, Smash 4 is quite literally brawl with all of its depth removed. Tripping and Metaknight aside, a competitive match in Brawl might as well be Melee compared to one in Smash 4.

In smash 4, you get hit, do your little 40-50% combo, and then go right back and forth during neutral until one of you dies. Being knocked off the stage is more an annoyance than a severe disadvantage. Defensive options are FAR too strong, recoveries and blast zones are FAR too rewarding, and the new ledge / rage mechanics give way too much advantage to the loser of the game.

In Brawl...well, alot more stuff can happen in Brawl. Yes, Metaknight was broken. But fights were far more dynamic, characters more capable. And most importantly, unlike in Smash 4, when you had a lead in brawl, you had a lead.

you play competitively and you think smash 4 is worse than brawl? how the fuck

I also play competitively, but smash 4 shits all over brawl in every single way.

Aside from wishing for better single player (I'm in the minority that actually LIKED Smash Tour even though Smash Run on the 3DS was better) it's the best Smash yet. A Switch version that combined the content of the 3DS and Wii U versions plus new stuff would be amazing.

What I can see them doing:

Add Ice Climbers and Wolf. Throw in Inklings and Elma and maybe another monumental third party character (Dragon Quest character, Layton, Shantae, or Shovel Knight) as newcomers.

Add custom moves and Palutena's Guidance for the dlc characters

Add the dlc characters trailers (Hey, I like rewatching them and feeling hyped)

It has become one of my most played games of all time and it this point it's pretty much all I play. Can't wait for the switch version but there are some things I would like to see.

-custom lobbies in online matches. This seems to be something that games avoid nowadays but this would be incredible for me.
-More stages but also improved stages. Dial down the stage hazards and make more maps playable.
-More characters. I always want more, it's amazing how they just keep adding characters and managing to create such unique fighting styles
-Have everything unlocked from the start. I don't see this happening but it would be awesome.

If smash NS was just a port of 4 with a few minor additions i'd be fine with that. I'm hoping for a few more big additions though.

bayonetta is in it so its the best smash bros ever made and will probably stay that way for the forseeable future unless she returns in sequels

I still prefer Melee and I'm not super into the competitive scene. It just feels more fluid and responsive. I like the added depth.

I still loved Smash 4, but I felt like the game annoyed me more balance wise.

I honestly feel Melee is actually pretty stiff. It's deep and satisfying but characters feel like bricks. And 4 is far more balanced than Melee.

I'm not a fan of it. I just find the speed and general pace of matches to be pretty boring compared to Melee. I wish I liked it, because in addition to my normal Smash staples Link and Samus, they added Bayonetta and Lucina, and the roster in general is pretty amazing. Other than that though, I just don't really have any interest in the game.

I would love a new game, but I hate how Sakurai feels "forced" to be the one handling the reins and then complaining about all the work. Just let someone else do it then. Oh, and I feel like the Wii U version was slightly gimped because of system parity with the 3DS version. So what if the 3DS couldn't handle Ice Climbers? There's already exclusive stages.

How does removing a movement option make the game better?

Honestly, wavedashing is annoying to perform, snaking in MKDS was even worse. I'd like to keep my hands/fingers.

I love Wily Castly, but damn that yellow devil. Ridley is probably the worst offender. And that mum in the WarioWare stage is way too powerful.

Surprisingly made me appreciate Melee more

I don't play the game that much unless I'm with a lot of friends

I liked all the Fire Emblem Characters.

Then I played Fates and realize Corrin is a terrible stupid character.

Also Cloud was my dream pick when I was a child so this game is the best in the series just for that.

I liked it a lot, my group just kinda fell out of it though. I think Mario Kart has topped it for my favorite multiplayer Nintendo series.

Still, probably my favorite entry if I had to choose. Great roster and fun stages.

Still the very best Smash game ever by a long shot.

People need to let Melee go already. Unless you're in for serious tournament play, which lets face it it's the vast minority, I fail to see how Melee could still be relevant after Smash 4. I play Smash for fun and this one already gives me as much as Melee did and then some 4 metric tons of additional shit too.

It doesn't take a tournament player to notice the massive differences in gameplay.

The Wii U version is the best Smash game overall for multiplayer content, but its single player offerings are probably the worst in the entire series, hands down. I'm hoping a remastering for the Switch can remedy this.

The 3DS version had some cool features but ultimately it's not the great couch party game Smash was designed as, and it's not as comfortable for me to play.

I still get more enjoyment out of Melee, and I played that game to death. I much prefer the feel of the characters, and sometimes less really is more.

No, people are allowed to like older games more than newer ones. I like smash 4 more but if someone likes the gameplay of melee more who am I to tell them they're wrong?

The games can coexist.

Let's see, it:

-Boasts a massive 50+ character roster
-Has a thriving competitive scene
-Functional online play
-You can make Cloud fight Ryu who can also fight Pacman in the same game
-Fun as heck
-Phenomenal fanart

Smash 4 lived up to the hype and then some

All you need to do is jump and then quickly airdodge diagonally.

it's difficult to get down, but it's not going to hurt your hands.

It was good, was just missing snake to be the perfect Smash game.

But you can't have Cloud vs Snake so that hurts it a bit

An incredible game. But for single player, it's really anemic and is completely dependent on your own collectathon motivation. That's where it fails for me, but with friends? It's the King
