KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Again, you've been a real help.

Thank you so much.
I'll keep you posted on how I get on.

Are you sure you're not mistaking frame rate / frame pacing issues with something being wrong with the TV? Cuz you mentioned that games with perfect 30 fps do not show the issue.

Or do they?

Well I'd accept that but terrestrial TV is juddering and bluray too in fast moving scenes.

Even Amazon and Netflix native apps are.

The TV has stuttering on say food channel Man vs food all the time.

If you compare the videos from his and my panels of the judder tests on the native YouTube app, you'll see there's a significant difference in judder.

Is there any chance that it could be my original PS4 thats causing this? I.e because the TV is having to upscale from 1080p to 4K?

This wouldn't explain the issues im having outside of gaming mind.

I will watch both again from my computer to see if I can see it better. When you guys see judder in those test videos are you referring to the ghost / duplicate images following the fan blades or something like inconsistent stutter?

Now that is a good question. Im getting inconsistant stutter in TV programmes and then judder i.e stop start stop start stop start of each frame as you pan a game with 30fps or less. This of course is amplified with lower fps. 60 fps and you cant see it.

I take it we are suppose to see those duplicate fan blades? As in pixel time to refresh?

Yeah you are supposed to see the duplicate fan blades more due to the flashing backlight than the pixel response time. The higher the backlight setting, the less spread out the duplicate fan blades should be. Backlight of 20 will not have any strobing.

Do you guys have sharpness at game mode with PS4 Pro? I noticed it defaulted to 50.

Most recommend a sharpness of zero, which means no added sharpening. Some people think you can do a little without adding too much artifacting, but it's something you have to figure out for yourself.

Also worth mentioning that in PC mode, a sharpness of 50 is neutral.

Sorry for the ignorance but does PC mode including game mode? I noticed that all other modes had set sharpness to 0 by default except game mode.

PC mode is a separate thing from game mode. When I have my PC hooked up, game mode isn't even available.

The TV just remembers your game mode settings separately from when you have it turned off, and 50 is its default sharpness IIRC.

Just tested what youve said above. Having the backlight set to 0 all the way up to 20 makes absolutely no difference in my case to the strobing effect on those judder tests. The strobing is exactly tge same no matter what.

I messed around with the tv using r ratings to configure 10 point colour and 2 points, and you know what? I've reverted to the default settings, to is set to 'normal' warm 1 on colour and I love the picture now.

As far as I'm aware, different backlight settings make no visible difference too when it comes to motion quality. I think the only time backlight/brightness changes made a difference for me is if I'm doing strobing/bfi/lightboosting with my pc monitor (as tested too by the blurbusters guys)

Do you have The Order on the ps4? That game has a very stable 30fps framerate and I was wondering if you could see juddering there too.

No but I have Rise of Tombraider, ratchet n clank and you can lock The last of us to 30fps. All those games have fairly solid 30fps and as such judder is minimal there but barely noticable.
Any game that fluctuates or seops below 30 and judder is very apparent.

I'll record Grand Tour later and upload that so you can see the judder im getting with TV.

I believe that PC mode occurs on inputs specifically named "PC"

Georaldc, maybe you can help me out here and speak to this. As a w900 owner and I a w802a owner we both know that Sony has a scene select mode called "animation" for animated movies. I would use it all the time when watching Disney/Pixar films and to me it really made the picture sing.

I've noticed that my KS9000 has no such viewing mode. Any idea which of the viewing modes may be suited for animated films?

Guys, Auto Color Space issue on PS4 Pro is driving me mad.
When I thought all was fine, I showed my brother some HDR videos on the YouTube app, then when coming back on the PS4 Pro source, colors were washed out again like before, and just couldn't get them right.
I tried turning the TV and the console off, but it didn't display properly anymore.

I didn't change any settings while noticing all of this, the Auto detection of Color Space on PS4 Pro seems to be either random, or depends on something I didn't figure out to be properly detected.

Firmware 1155 doesn't seem to be available for me, but as of now I'm not even sure about whether the problem comes from the TV or the PS4 Pro.

If anyone has a clue about this, I'd gladly take it.

I think I'm returning this set. 4 months in and I see a subtle faint smudge of a vertical line on the left side of the panel. Also when the picture is white, the left and right edges have a greenish-blueish tint and isn't fully white. Is this normal? And for the first time while gaming today, the screen flickered or something and showed me doubles of all players on the pitch, with funny rgb colors. I'm only 4 months in and this happens? What's going to happen years later then?

I believe the RGB colour seperation is a fault introduced in 1154 firmware. This is now fixed in 1155 I believe.
FYI im on 1154 and I get the same.

I see. That's the first time this has happened.

What about the other issues I'm having, do you have them as well?

I've definitely noticed stutter and I think it ruins the auto motion plus modes but with them off it's ok enough to me. I notice it sometimes outside of those modes but not like in the post processing modes where it's rampant. It's not come up for me in games, only really in fast panning or moving shots that already have frame rate related judder. If you want auto motion modes then this isn't the tv for you in my opinion. The black frame insertion mode is also total crap - it flickers much more than you would expect.

To anyone that has any QC issues, get that panel replaced ASAP if you can. Don't force yourself to live with any issues that bother you if you don't have to. Light bleed, excessive clouding, distracting processing issues, are not normal and shouldn't be put up with. It is possible to find a quality, relatively trouble free panel by playing the lottery multiple times(though I understand not everyone has the means, time, or patience to do this).

My small 2016 TV buying odyssey follows:

My first 65" KS8000 (technically KS800D from Costco) was a complete disaster; bad uniformity, DSE, RGB color separation (and yes, I have had this as early as firmware 1142), panel separation on multiple sides, distracting light bleed from the bottom edge, and a loud troublesome popping sound whenever I shut the TV off. Needless to say, I wasn't going to live with that so after two months I returned it. I got a 55" LG C6 OLED shortly after when it was on sale thinking that it would be the only suitable replacement for my 8 year old Panasonic 50" plasma TV (which is still kicking ass BTW). While it had incredible picture quality and contrast obviously it had issues of its own like bad near black performance which I couldn't defeat unless I turned up brightness enough to defeat the purpose of having that awesome infinite black contrast. While the KS8000 has bad viewing angles, the OLED had pretty bad color shift at an angle so that is just as bad to me but costing twice as much. Plasma was and still is the king in viewing angles.

What made me return it though was its own uniformity issues and whatever the hell this was in the lower right hand corner of the panel. http://imgur.com/uc48KgH

I decided to try the KS8000 again last week mostly because it was on sale for under $1000 but this time the 55" version with a AA02 panel instead of the 65" FA01. So far I have none of the issues that I have had with the 65" and I am pretty pleased so far. That could change of course but I have 3 months with Costco and I am happy with the path and journey I have taken. All of this tech is new and in its infancy with all of these new standards and technologies coming out that I just didn't feel comfortable getting another OLED TV which is twice the price but doesn't have twice the performance in my eyes. I have been playing FFXV in HDR on the 55" KS and it looks fucking incredible. I think OLED will be the standard in a year or two when they work out some quirks but I am hoping this TV tides me over until then.

I get it too in 1155 but very rarely, and only when in the middle of changing settings. It also happens only for a split second so it hasn't bothered me yet.

Sorry, never used the Animation scene. I noticed though that these samsung sets have fewer options to tinker with, compared to the bravias.

For now, I would just calibrate it to what I think looks good for general movie viewing and use that too for animated content.

Anyone playing Watch Dogs 2 on original PS4?

Description of a side-mission. I don't think it's a spoiler, but I'm being careful:
There's a mission where you have to take control of a series of cash machines and control a camera watching people take money out.

When the mission ends there's a black screen saying 'feed suspended' or something. On that black screen I can see light in the left-hand side of the TV frame. Mixture of white and red. Not light bleed - just a line of white.

I don't know if it's supposed to be there or not. I haven't seen it at any other time, whether playing games or watching films.

It's like the TV can't decide when it wants to reveal its flaws.

What's your backlight set for SDR?
On mine I have to go to 13, as anything else is too dark.

I've got AA02 as well and SDR looks very good. However, HDR looks no different, even when watching Grand Tour through built in app.

I just called best buy. Made an appointment to have my ks8000 exchanged for a new one. I made the mistake of cleaning it with LCD cleaner and microfiber cloth and I noticed discoloration. I should have read up beforehand. I didn't tell them exactly what happened. Just going to say I noticed it and tried to wipe it out with microfiber and it wouldn't go away.

What is the correct way to clean this set?

Bleach and water. Lots of water. Make sure you get it in all the ports - those things get real dusty.

It's ridiculous that you could damage the TV cleaning it as you did.
Didn't think it would be that fragile

My backlight for SDR is generally 8 for movies, 10 for tv/gaming/YouTube. I find these settings bright enough but I am coming from an older plasma so my eyes might be used to darker images!

Yeah, I've noticed a discolored spot on my screen that won't go away with the microfiber cloth they give you.

What do you guys suggest? I can't believe I'm asking this, but is water okay? This screen is so damn fragile lol

I've got fingerprints from the factory that won't wipe off either. Can't tell if they're under the coating or need a cleaner.

I have other problems but those you listed I dont.

Are those issues permantly there or or they source dependant?

They're permanent. More obvious in brighter screens.

Wish I had seen this review before: http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1468834358

TV is going back and I'll bite the bullet and get an LG OLED.

I've tried so hard to like this TV and no matter how hard I try, I simply can't look past its issues.

Note in review: suttering on all sources.

Exactly what I'm getting.

I'm doing this as well. Waiting for the Samsung techie to do his report so I can send this back and get a 55" LG C6.

I really loved this TV until my issues showed up. I don't want to replace it with another Sammy as I can't be bothered having the same issues again.

Going to miss the 20-ish input lag though :(

Just got my PS4 PRO set up about an hour ago..took a few tries to get into safe mode but finally did it..so I have the KS8000 and these are my settings once I put the HDMI 3 to ON

Resolution..3840x2180-60hz, Color Format..RGB, HDR on Your TV..2K/4K Supported..HDCP..2.2..is that OK just wanted to be sure..everything is set to automatic so I Really didnt have to do anything other than change the HDMI port for HDR to ON mode..one thing I notice is that under SOURCES the Playstation is greyed out when I turn OFF the system I guess since its not actually ON its not lighted up like my XBOX ONE S is since that is on instant on mode
Also right now my TV picture is on MOVIE MODE do I have to change anything or can I leave that alone even when Im playing a game on the PS4 PRO

I know words don't mean much w/o being able to see it, but I think these are my final settings for 90% of content, games or movies:

Game Mode

Backlight 20
Brightness 35
Contrast 90
Sharpness 0
Color 65

Smart LED High
Dynamic Contrast High
Color Tone Standard

White Balance, 2 Point
R-Offset -2
G-Offset 0
B-Offset 3
R-Gain 0
G-Gain -8
B-Gain 10

Gamma 0
Color Space Auto

The white balancing took the ash green out of skin and bloom, put just the right amount of purple gradiation into the color spectrum between dark and light. Looks incredible for my tastes. Hope it maybe helps someone.

Save from going into individual television settings for your Game Mode or getting it calibrated or something, you're probably better off than 90% of people who set up their TV.

Maybe change your Color Tone to Warm 1 or Warm 2, depending on what you like. It's subjective.

The only thing you'd ever need to change is your backlight to 20 when you play a game in HDR, because the TV currently doesn't automatically change settings for HDR games (it does for streaming videos, etc.) When you're done with an HDR game, change the backlight back to your original setting. Hopefully they update the firmware to add this feature.

PS4 being greyed out as a source when it's off is normal.

I would use Game Mode. It improves the latency for gaming. You only need to change the backlight to 20 manually if the game uses HDR.

You absolutely WANT to use game mode as otherwise input lag is quite bad.

Manual adjustments are only required in game mode as for some reason this mode does not store separate picture settings for SDR and HDR content independently.

Everyone............I'm a complete tool!
Hang on..that's not exactly fair. I'm part tool!

Let me explain...

Ok so the main issue I've been complaining about is the juddering or "strobing" effect on games of below 30fps. Now you may class juddering or strobing as separate effects. Unbeknown to myself I didnt. In any case the ghosting of the image as you pan the camera is incredibly noticable with this TV. I never noticed this on my old set. Maybe because the image quality is so damn good on this set.

Anyways...before boxing my KS7000 up for exchange with a LG B6 I decided to visit my brother inlaw as he purchased the B6 a month ago.

This was a total revealation. Not only did this TV highlight the same ghosting effects as you pan the camera but the controller lag is too great for me in HDR. With SP you can get away with it but multiplayer HDR would have to be turned off.

The B6 is a fantastuc image but nowhere near worth the extra £1000 to get it.

TLDR - KS7000 has incredible image quality and the motion I was complaining about is present on all TVs!!!
I wish Devs would stick to a locked 30fps and not allow fps to drop below that.

My questions are gaf...
I get micro stutters and after copious amounts of reading online it is apparent that micro stuttering has been a burden with Samsung TVs for a few years.
Is it likely to get fixed in a firmware?

Secondly, I'm getting rare instanced of the RGB seperation. Again is this likely to get fixed via firmware or do have a duff TV?

Thirdly, when watching blu-ray movies, is it normal for judder or ghosting say on the edges of trees in the background to happen when camera pans?

Again I have never picked up on previous TVs because they have never looked this good before?

Thank you and I apologise for posting at least 20 times on an effect that happens with all TVs!!

I would still try and take it back. Your videos of the YouTube judder tests were noticeably worse than mine (ignoring the artefacts).

Nearly the same thing happened to me and it was a major pain in the ass to get my KS9000 replaced. But since you are not in Germany you should have no problems. ;)

I only clean it with a good microfiber cloth and I ordered Monster cleaning fluid, which was recommended in this thread. But I will use it with caution.
And yes, the Samsung is very very fragile. :(

Thanks, will try the White Balance setting ASAP.
You also have Dynamic contrast on "high", I really think it looks better for PS4 games, but the loss of detail in movies is quite visible. But to my eyes the other DC settings look more washed out and brighten the picture more than "high". So I settled with DC on "high" for games for now.
