The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Recently supported Ne Obliviscaris's patreon. Curious what people's thoughts are on the model?
I support it if it stops bands from writing whiny articles/blogs about how hard touring life is and how they don't make money

If you want to actually make your music into a business then I think people should take advantage of whatever they can for sources of income. Patreon is good because a lot of times you have fans who just want to support, you're also getting into Twitch sub territory where people are like "hey i gave you money we're friends now right? notice me please"

I don't really see a problem with it if people aren't begging for money or if you set it up solely to say "hey if you want to support us it'll help us out a lot". I have a bigger problem with someone like that Allegeaon band (don't know how it's spelled, who cares) where they say they'll break up if they don't get Patreon money.

A lot of people in bands hate the model and think it's just whiny kids who think they're entitled to money. Again if people are willing to pay I don't really see an issue with it, but it is stupid when these bands that are like "hey guys we really need the money" also need a big tour bus, a driver, and a bunch of other unnecessary vanity shit. You need the band, gear, and a van.

I'm behind the general idea but I think the payout right now doesn't add up. So according to them the idea is to have a stable income to be able to make music full time and to increase the amount of money that goes directly to them instead of to the label. Awesome!

But: Even if I spend just 1$ a month and they pump out one album per 2 years they already got 24$ (maybe 20 if you subtract the Patreon cut) directly to them which should be a lot more than they would have gotten if I bought their album. I honestly feel like every Patron who spent a certain amount (and I'm talking way below triple digits) since the last album should get a digital download of the next album for free. Afaik that's currently not the case, right?

No, and that's probably because they're also on an actual label.

They're doing both routes and it's kind of weird. If they weren't on that label they could probably give away more and experiment more with what they do for people paying $1 or $2 or whatever per month, but because they're on the label they really can't.

I'm not sure what singular band I'd pay $1 or $2 a month for. Probably some of my absolute favorites, but I'd want a lot in return. Probably streaming of most live shows, and a new song every month at least.

that's probably one of the best death metal albums to ever come out of Mexico. Proud owner of the vinyl edition. Surprisingly, their follow up LP is also really fucking good if you're down with The Red in the Sky Is Ours.

Red Sky is meh, but I may listen regardless. How much was the vinyl?

Oh ma gah, seeing Meshuggah tomorrow for the first time. I don't think I'm prepared.

Fucking nice!

I was able to find a copy for like 40 bucks after it had been sold out from most distros.

but seriously no love for TRitSIO? It's basically the only At the Gates I care about, and I worship the fuck out of it, but to each their own. I find it to be a pretty unique piece of twisted death metal.

That's not bad, I was expecting 300 dollars or something.

Yeah, never been too hot on that album. YMMV.

It is by FAR my favorite ATG album too.

The Red In The Sky Is Ours > Terminal Spirit Disease > With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness > the rest
The other albums by At The Gates are garbage to me. They have a very up and down discography. With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness has awful production, but its decent. Terminal Spirit Disease has a great sound, but extremely repetitive.

Took me long enough, but I stocked up on all Bölzer albums. Hero doesn't deserve the bashing it gets, natural evolution for them. CRUSH

Speaking of AOTY's , we are doing ours on the Metal community?

2016 was a rather weak year for what I enjoy listening to, although I did find a new band that has easily become one of my favorites, majorly derivative or not.

01. Anciients - Voice of the Void (All hail the new, old Opeth?)
02. Anciients - Heart of Oak (2013, but just found out about them in August)
03. Sunburst - Fragments of Creation (kind of like if Jeff Loomis joined Kamelot)
04. Twelve Foot Ninja - Outlier (catchy as hell)
05. Witherscape - The Northern Sanctuary
06. Abbath - Abbath
07. A Sense of Gravity - Atrament
08. Helstar - Vampiro
09. Megadeth - Dystopia
10. Anthrax - For All Kings (better than it has any right to be)

The new Khemmis and King Goat are pretty decent, but I feel like half of the album is much better than the other on both.

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
I agree with the above, though getting into whether something is hard rock or traditional heavy metal just gets annoying after a while. The line is blurred with stuff like Krokus. Might as well list both genres (which can both be justified) and not bicker over nothing.

Who cares what genre they are, when they only have one song anyway?

:)

Why did this somehow make me want to listen to disturbed?

I always thought Draiman deserved a better band. His voice is good and his vocal writing isn't bad (on the first two albums anyway, no fucking clue what he did after that)

I'd rather just listen to pre Horror Show Iced Earth, since Barlow does everything he does, and more anyway.

I'm kind of digging the new album put out by that rock supergroup, Gone is Gone. It's fronted by Mastodon's singer. It also has members from Queens of the Stone Age and At the Drive In.

If you dig a more laid back Mastodon sound you should check this out.

Also, I'm not sure it was mentioned here, but Pain of Salvation's new album brings them back to a more metal sound and the album's freakishly amazing (if you're a fan of PoS in the first place). Highly recommend it. It's going to be hard to top as AOTY. On a Tuesday is particularly incredible.

Holy shit that's a hellova list of names.

Will be checking out based on the album art alone, but this only cements it further.

Never heard of this until now. What kind of music is it :p

Edit: so I read the wiki page and it's basically Avantasia with some other bells and whistles. Fucking amazing!
