New PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset

I just had a quick run of Uncharted 4 to test that 3D audio and it’s great. The Being John Malkovich inspired mixing of having Drake's voice in my head is a bit unnerving but that positional audio certainly sounds better to me vs the golds.

Also the size seems just big enough. I have a few notches more to work with on the earcups on the golds vs platinum so they are a bit smaller/less adjustable.

Is there any solid confirmation whether the Platinum headset works with PS3?

That's going to be a possible dealbreaker for me if they don't.

is the 3D audio exclusive to these headphones or is it an option for any headphones?

They dont. I just tested them after seeing your post.

They will work as an input device (as a Mic), but not output (You have to send the sound to your TV).

I connected my Elites back to my PS3 just in case I had some settings wrong but those worked as expected.

I would guess the PS3 needs a firmware upgrade or something to use them properly. They also do not show in the PS3 Headset Companion App, whereas they do show on the PS4 version

Is there any word on which games will support the 3D audio?

I'm debating returning these, but might keep them if there's enough future support. Specifically games like Nioh, Horizon, Nier...

After a few days of use:

Pro:
  • Sound is Amazing (Have not tried 3D audio yet on Uncharted)
  • Battery life is MUCH improved over the gold headset
  • Much better build quality than the gold headset
  • Chat quality just as good maybe a little better.
Con:
As one of the review stated, they can get a little uncomfortable after prolonged use but nothing unbearable. It's possible the head strap needs time to be "broken in".

Does the 3D audio icon show up regardless or only when the game supports it?

I was playing Technomancer yesterday, and notice the 3D audio in the popup when I was adjusting the volume.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Yea seems it flat out replaces the VSS icon on the golds. Does not mean 3D is supported ala U4

I agree with all of this. Though I have played through a few levels of U4 and it sounds wonderful. The belltower in Chapter 11(?) where you are chatting with Sully down below as you climb higher and higher, very impressive how you can practically hear exactly where he is far below you.

I also do find myself making adjustments to the set on the top of my head every now and again as the band on the top of my head can be a bit uncomfortable with prolonged use. Not as bad as the Elites, but less comfy than the Golds in that area.

Has anyone tried them with PSVR? Do they fit around the head strap nicely?

Yea they do.

You just have to make sure you push the head step up until it clears the ear muffs.

Not really a big deal, also thats how the instructions tells you to fit the strap. Its just that sometimes I can get a clearer image when I push the head strap down toward my neck. Cant do that with the Headphones on

Is there something I'm missing? I just can't tell the difference between these and the golds. I've switched back and forth a million times trying to see if the platinum sounds better, and I just can't tell.

I think I'm going to return them.

The VSS/3D doesn't sound good to me either. Sounds muffled or something. Which is weird cause I didn't have a problem with the VSS on the golds.

Unless you are an Audiophile Sound "quality" may be negligible.

Build quality (so far) is noticeable better, and the implementation on 3D audio (Uncharted take advantage of it so far) are the stand outs

When 3D is implemented, does it sound noticeably different than the standard VSS mode. The VSS mode sounds horrible to me. I just turn it off.

I've asked before to, but does anyone know if there is a list, or confirmed games that will support the 3D audio?

Well Only Uncharted 4 and VR games take advantage of 3D audio so far.

3D does sound noticeably different in how its handle (You can hear up and down) not its sound quality.

Not sure why VSS sounds muffled to you. I have only use mine will playing Technomancer so far and it works well for me.

I wonder if the VSS is trying to simulate sound projection in whatever game you are playing and it coming off as muffled.

I like to spin my camera around while Im in dialog to experience the sound going around my head

You still get "surround sound" even with VSS off.

I also want to know about it, will it work with PS3??
Cause, in Amazon FAQ'S they said, it worked with PS3, not that i want to doubt it.
But, we're talkin about $160 in this case, ortherwise maybe buy the gold instead?

Tried them on the PS3 but they don't work. Maybe they'll update the companion app.

I have a huge problem tho. After some time like 5-10 minutes the sound starts to crackle. I'm sitting in the dashboard and the on,y sound is the basic PS4 dashboard theme and they crackle non stop.

Reset them like 5 times but didn't help.

Well this is bizarre. From the PlayStation.blog:

According to Steve Schwartz - Product Marketing Manager, Platforms Marketing, "Yes it will work wirelessly with with PS3 systems but you will not be able to take advantage of some of the more advanced features."

Is being able to hear the fucking audio from the PS3 an advanced feature? What the fuck?!

These were $160 and I bought them intending to use them with my PS3 too. I didn't buy them until I read this, which was posted December 14th!

Is the only place you can reliably get these in store is at
GameStop?

I want to get a pair today but would rather not give GS my money. Best Buy says preorder and Target says out of stock.

crap, this is a deal killer. I was hoping to use them to listen to music at work too :(

I guess I'll get my Astro A38s for that and use the A40s for the PS4.

Advance feature, like the 3d audio?

I just returned mine.

It had a buzzing noise in the right ear cup.
It's a manufacturing error. It's like a whiny coil noise. Was less when the USB was in while having it on.

Without it it was really noticeable and loud. Even over gameplay.

So if you have that problem, return it!!! I didn't order a new one. I'll wait for a price drop and wait till the acknowledge and fix it, difference with the gold wasn't much anyway I'll keep using those until then (build quality was amazing though)

If you don't believe me just Google:

"Platinum headset buzzing noise" a lot of people have the exact same problem, noise in the right ear cup, even the replacements they got, and some even got it after some usage later.

Hope they fix it......... I was really turned off especially because of my excellent experience with the gold.

Oh damn I had that (last post) didn't see your comment.

Is it a constant crackle in the right ear cup?

And does it get lower or go away while you listen with the USB in? (charging and using it at the same time)

Yeah I'm impatient though and was hoping to cop a pair today. I may just do that though.

$134 now. Mine are holding up fine, haven't had the buzzing sound some have had, but one of my friend's one had buzzing he couldn't hear but we could hear in party chat.

Hopefully it's just a bad batch. Wathing (Listening) to mine closely.

Any updates about peoples' experiences with these? Still buzzing, or has anyone's started to malfunction like others have described? I only used mine once so far using the 3.5mm jack connected to my laptop while playing ps4 via remote play. Haven't had a chance to use em on my ps4 in the same room due to some renovations going on at my house. :(

Anyone hear/read anything about an update for the ps3 companion app or an update patch so we can use these on ps3?

Sometimes while playing Uncharted 4's multiplayer the audio just drops and the only way to fix it is to close the game and restart. Has anyone ran into this issue?

Got my pair from Best Buy. The sound is definitely louder and clearer from the Gold, but there's one problem: it's really tight on my head, to the point that I've been getting headaches.

Will the strap break in over time? Right now it's uncomfortable to the point that I'm thinking of returning it and sticking to the Gold.

I wore mine for an hour or two a few nights ago and it was uncomfortable on my ears. I hoped it would feel better, but I couldn't seem to get it into a comfortable position. I liked how it sounded, just felt annoying on my head. I was laying in bed propped up on a pillow so maybe that had something to do with it. I'll wear them sitting on the couch tomorrow and see how that feels.

How do you prevent the black ear cup material from flaking off? I ask because I have had the golds for 2 years and the ear cups have warned down quite a bit over time and is now flaking off tiny piece by piece. I noticed the Platinums have those same ear cups and just want to know the best way to preserve the set from wear and tear.

That will happen anyways most likely. Unless you keep them in a ziplock bag most of the time. The ear cups can be replaced though. They sell them for headphones all the time.

Is there a guide on how to replace them and where to buy the parts online?

If you buy the actual Gold replacement ear cups, they will just twist off. You can also buy just the vinyl ear pads which is what I did for my Pulse Elites.

Google the gold earcup replacements, they are cheap. Got mine from eBay.

They are out of stock where I am. I'm gonna wait for the second batch before going for it.

Yea need to find that in The Netherlands as well. I peeled it all of by myself at one point. Doesn't impact comfort it just looks uglier now :p

Tried the wireless stealth headset from Turrtle beach 502p. Sounds was good. But again fricking static noises all the time. I love my golds, no static sounds whatsoever. I'll just keep them till the problem with the Platinum is fixed.

Or I'll just order one again at some point to see if I have a good one, not trusting it right now though....

Not specific to the platinums, but I went with a sock mod before the pads on mine started flaking/cracking.

Pretty happy with my purchase. I also have Astro A30's and these are waaay better. An upgrade I really needed.

I haven't had much discomfort (longest session was about 3 hours) although I have a couple of inches of hair on top and game with a ball cap on most of the time. Maybe if I'm getting nitpicky they can get a little tight from a bit of clamping.

Wouldn't say a final nail from a one random guy.

I could've made the same video, and I prefer the golds over the pulse anytime. Battery life, Weight, comfort, design, price.

It's just what you prefer. Had both, sound is very similar, the pulse bass mode was annoying to me (don't like my head to vibrate....) , and cut the battery life to around 4 hours.

Vvs was a bit better on the pulse though.

I've two sets of Pulse Headphones only issues I have is that they are very tight and cause me quite a bit of discomfort after a while

With my Pulse, I used a headband add on to fix that . Also, I used to leave them "stretched out" when in storage by putting them over a small cardboard box.
