WBC and tournament formats arguably need some sort of fast-end rule (to get people to play) and ties don't really work in the format

but otherwise, i don't like the idea of modifying the basic rules of baseball because management wants to see a lower average time. i would go further and say average time is way less of a problem than rules/behaviors that suppress individuality and generally kill fun. but if you absolutely have to stop long games then really do it: allow ties after only a few innings like NPB's 12 inning limit. so you haven't changed the rules of the game & you actually do have certainty of an outcome.

i don't like making IBB automatic either, make the dude throw the pitches

Didn't the WBC have it when it first started? Like, the rule was when the game entered the 13th, runners will be placed at 1st and 2nd?

I was just reading an ESPN story about Cubs needs and what they should do this year, and they kept mentioning that with Schwarber back they have an extra guy they don't need and could be traded (Zobrist or Baez) for a ace pitcher. But they lost Fowler. Isn't the plan to start Hewyard at CF, Kyle at LF and Zobrist at RF? So they don't actually have an extra great player unless I'm missing something.

Centerfield looks more like Jon Jay/Almora platoon. Zobrist will, i assume, be part of a position rotation to keep everyone rested.

Ah ok that makes sense but even then I still don't agree with that article basically saying the Cubs should trade Baez or Zobrist for a starting pitcher like they are not really needed. Especially considering how an injury can happen anytime and Maddon likes to rotate his lineup quite often.

Also there is the big question mark about Hewyard showing improvement at the plate...

Agreed. Love to see them get another quality starter but not at the assumed cost.

not really sure who you trade zobrist or baez for an ace pitcher.
zobrist is old and not a great pick up for any team that is rebuilding (about the only place you can pry an ace pitcher from)

and Baez while having a good season last year doesn't have the best track record in general so at this point it's a question of if he is actually good or if last year was more of a fluke. that being said he does at least have real value, but whether that is enough to be the cornerstone for an ace pitcher giving the current market is a different story.

Downside to Marlins getting sold is scumbag Loria gets 1.6 billion after years of not putting anything into the team.

With that said can somebody please buy the Rays as well?

I can't believe this, if this deal goes through, it will be the best day ever. It's funny because 2017 was the year most people speculated when the deal got done in 2012, because Loria did not have to give the city back a shit ton of money if he sold the team. If he would've sold the team before, he would have had to give the city a % of the sale. I think he pays a penalty now, or close to nothing. The Marlins can't relocate for 30 years due to the stadium deal either, so this is all great news. New York real estate man is going to want to draw interest to the team, he as no choice but to buy Shohei and make him our ace and cleanup guy.

Best.Day.Ever.

Oh damn, Krukow only doing Home/West games now. :/ Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez to replace for the other games

Henry Schulman ‏@hankschulman

Just talked to Krukow. He said he'll do all home games and NL West road games. Nothing east of Denver till the playoffs. #sfgiants

Cubs got another lottery ticket pitcher in Alec Mills. I actually liked Donny Dewees though.

As a Royals fan, yeah, I'd say Mills is more starting pitching depth than anything. Probably a #5 starter for the most part.

It was kinda weird to me that Royals DFA'd Mills for Hammel instead of one of our weaker bullpen reliever prospects, but I bet it was now because a possible trade was already in place. Makes sense in that way. Also surprised that the Royals got Dewees for Mills.

Also, great that Loria is now out for Marlins fans and baseball fans in general!

Is there another Javier Lopez in the minors somewhere? Javier Lopez took ownership of the name in the majors after Javier "Javy" Lopez wrapped up his career after all.

Finally Marlins fans can move on from that scumbag Loria and have a quality owner.

Kushner plead guilty to 18 counts of making illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering.

Oh...
