Various eShop software download sizes for Nintendo Switch games

Surely, if you plan to go entirely digital on a console then you should make allowances for spending money on storage at some point.

The same if you bought a 500GB PS4 or Xbox One.

I'm planning on buying retail when possible, but there are eShop exclusives... and none of them are smaller than 1GB, so I think an SD card is going to be a must for all Switch owners at some point.

I don't see what's the point in crying. You have to buy more memory for Sony and Ms systems too and they're a console while the Switch is a handheld. Shit the Switch is better without installs from physical games alone.

I own a ton of digital games on Xbox One and never needed additional space. But even then I have spare external HDDs I can use.

Completely different situation here. There is no one game that fills it.

Already, there is a defense force.

Look, you probably can find SD cards for cheap, maybe 40 or 30 bucks to extend the room. Given how much one might download if going fully digital, though, maybe needing to upgrade to one that costs 60 or more might be necessary. Regardless, that's an extra price that other consoles don't carry, and some people are already penny pinching to buy this system or don't want to spend more.

Additionally, telling people "not to buy digital" is silly for a variety of reasons. But at the top, I'd list "constraining the consumer" as a big one. It'd be dumb to tell people not to do that when they run out of room on their PS4s and Xbox Ones, and it's dumb to tell them that here. It's a valid complaint about the system, and whether or not it inconveniences you is up to your preference. It's alright for people to air their grievances.

It's a tablet, not a console. You cant put a physical platter drive in it. Ask your phone or tablet manufacturer how much they charge for extra onboard flash storage. That's why the cost is being passed to the prosumer rather than everyone who buys the console for, say, 350 or more instead of 299. Be realistic, not concerntrollistic. Hell, be happy they're not fleecing you like Sony did with extremely expensive proprietary flash storage.

For one thing, Nintendo is calling it a console. It's a console. Stop that. And since these SD cards are so cheap, they could have bundled one in with the machine.

Find me one 500GB game from either of those systems. Hell, find me two games that take up 500GB and force me to buy more memory. I'll wait!

Hmmm...I like physical collections but I have experimented with digital on a couple 3DS/Wii U titles. Maybe I'll get an SD card to be safe...

What is Nintendo supposed to do? They can't just up the amount of space available. An SD card purchase was inevitable.

And you can own a ton of physical without ever needing to buy more external memory unlike the competition where even if you buy physical you'll more than likely need to buy more memory.

And if they add more memory how the hell would the system cost $300 still. People shit on Nintendo when they first heard $300. If they put 64 GB it surely would've been $350...

I wonder how big VC games are going to be... Each one on Wii packed in the emulator and a manual, if i remember correctly, which lead to bloat.

Do me a favour.
Head over to the switch teardown thread. Tell me where you can fit a 2.5" platter drive in there.

While you're doing some research, calculate the cost and number of destroyed platter drives to be replaced under warranty after people *move* their tablets slightly while playing.

Edit: and it's not a console, no matter what marketing says it is. Use your eyes. Look at it with your eyes. If you have any critical thinking ability, you can clearly see what it is and it's form factor.

It really goes to show how Nintendo is amazing at compressing their games while everyone else sucks ass.

Like how can Dragon Quest take up that much space while Zelda is way bigger than that game.

You are right. They can't. That doesn't solve the inherent problem of their design. As a consumer, I don't need to baby a company due to their decisions. Theoretically, due to the low cost of SD cards, they could have possibly bundled one to help with space, but I honestly don't know the logistics of that.

The PS4 and Xbone didn't launch with 500GB games. 500GB games aren't a thing, >32GB games are.

There isn't any game on Xbox One or PS4 that's too large to fit on the internal storage the system ships with.

It's pathetic that the Switch only has 32 GB of flash memory - the same amount the Wii U shipped with in 2011. It should have a minimum of 64 GB of internal memory (though 128 would have been better).

Course they can, but the reactions at a $400/ $500 SKU for 128/256 GB internal memory surely would have been pretty awful (considering the complaints we already got for the $300 price point).

I'll just dump my $20 128GB microSD in it and be happy.

Looks like the 64GB card I have lying around will last me for the first year I think. At worst I may have to buy a second one (wasn't there one on sale for $15 recently?). I'm set then.

Though I've been encouraging myself to buy physical more due to the Amazon Prime discount. Might be set for life, lol.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Every game on PS4/One needs to be installed doesn't matter if it's digital or retail. On Switch getting a 256gb card for 50bucks and you will be good for years. Unless you download everything and refuse to delete/re-download stuff.

Otherwise you can get 128gb for less than 30 which should be enough for most people.

We already know DQ Heroes is a shitty port, so it not a surprise this size. Will be funny when we know Fire Emblem Warriors size, instead.

It should have 64 GB and still be $300? Or 128 and still be $300?

how is it bigger? do we know for sure? maybe DQ has ten times the amount of audio or textures. it really, really depends on a lot of factors.

looks like I can get a 128gb micro SD for $40, I'm ok with this. I don't know if I'll go all digital but I'm really tempted to, even though I already bought zelda physical. I could also just wait for black friday and probably find a 256gb for under 60 bucks, and that would last me the entire life of the system

Yeah and that would of been 400 dollars.

Why is the Zelda: Breath of the Wild file size on Switch only slightly larger than the Wii U version?

13.4 GB vs 13 GB.

Are there really no graphical improvements other than native 900p vs 720p ?

Its a valid complaint but its also something easily alleviated. Most of yall have $400 android phones and tablets with a SD card in there just because it has an SD Card slot.

Yall continue to call everything a defense force yet somebody just simply stating the other options and how it relates to what we already do and own. Nothing wrong with complaining.. also nothing wrong with seeing the other side as well.

So much hypocrisy

Nearly 62 GBs on this list alone.
Due to the OS, even two Switches couldn't fit that.
Can I just list a bunch of Xbox or PS games in a row and say how they won't fit on their system without buying another? Grow up with your trolling. It's like some Gamefaqs shit here.

Your inability to adress the argument suggests you're not interested in discussion, rather than transparently poor attempts at concern trolling.

They specifically stated outside of resolution that they really did nothing to the Switch game because then it would result in the Wii U game being considered inferior. So it doesn't take advantage of the joyvcons etc

Should've cut the HD rumble and motion control crap and put a decent sized storage solution inside. Such a strange thing to skimp on in 2017.

The joycons etc have no bearing on the space. Switch is packed in as tight as it gets there is no room. Its Battery or hard drive.

Have we confirmed that the retail game cards don't require any installs whatsoever?

i figured MK8 Deluxe was already done the second they announced it would release in april nice to know its not much bigger than the wii u version.

Not all graphical improvements take up storage space (draw distance, lighting, etc.)

Though I guess this means we might not expect higher resolution textures.

Would have made the console more expensive... So I have to disagree on that.

People who need more space can use SD cards... No need to jack up the price for everyone else just because your DQ Heroes digital download might not fit.

Switch is still in a better place than the 3DS which is more or less the portable standard.
Everyone knows you need a bigger SD card of you are going digital on 3DS.

Not after buying one game. But I agree that you should be able to boot the games from disc on XB1 and PS4, made a thread about it once, that mandatory full game install is incredibly annoying when the hdd is starting to fill up.
Still, you're more likely to go all digital on a portable console so it's not ideal that one single download can fill up the internal storage.

Nope. I'm glad you weren't involved in the design process for this device. I'll spend $15 and triple my storage, while keeping both of those features intact.
