Ugh. I just accidentally installed mame2010 from source and now I'm going to be waiting for it to finish forever. I just want to play!

Can anybody explain how to enable the turbo function in retroarch? I used to use zsnes and setting it up was very easy. I just map it to the right trigger and go. But retroarch seems to have multiple options and no matter what I do, I got no result.

Help

Some of the raspberry pi handhelds are just stunning, one from reddit:

the guy is working on a pcb kit in the future.

Having spent the past few weeks messing around with out NES Mini Classic and it;s recent update to support other consoles, I'm now really wanting to expand my emulation into something else.

I've been looking into the Raspberry Pi 3 but I remembered earlier that we have an Wii U that hasn't been used for for a couple of years so I'm wondering if people think one should be my preferred option rather than the other?

It's essentially to get my kids into older games so I do want a very consoled experience for them, as in the select the game as if it was an official system and it just plays. How do both these systems handle higher end stuff like Dreamcast, N64 and Gamecube games? Does Dolphin run well on either option?

EDIT:
I should add that I'm not looking for a handheld Raspberry Pi, it would be for the TV via HDMI even though the handheld in the post above looks absolutely amazing.

So I recently updated my the Recalbox OS to v4.0.1, and now whenever I try load a ROM game I'm getting only audio but no picture. I did Google search and it seems I'm the only one having this problem. Can anyone on GAF help me, please?

EDIT - Nevermind. They fixed the bug.

I don't have any experience with the WiiU when it comes to homebrew/emulation, but those 3 are basically not playable on a pi 3 for the most part. N64 can play some stuff alright, but quickly starts to chug with anything even remotely demanding.

Well I can't speak to how dreamcast and n64 run on Wii U because I have no experience with that. But you can run your GameCube isos natively in Wii mode on your Wii U and it works wonderfully.

Finally got everything scraped using the sselph scraper. I tried using the universal xml scraper but it kept on bombing out on me. Took quite a while still with the sselph scraper though. Combined with the Eudora theme and things are looking good.

Man I feel like am running into like every bug that can happen with RetroPie.
Controller mappings/configs getting written in wrong directories, retroarch settings not saving, scrape data vanishing. I was thinking about switching the SD card because why not... hell knows where the problems come from.
My NES30 Pro is just not working correct in the games despite it having set a million times and mapping now in every folder I can imagine...

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the Wii U stuff another time but I don;t want to turn this thread into a Wii U thread as I'm probably going to order a Raspberry Pi in the next could of hours.

I assume that the best model to go for is the Raspberry Pi 3 - Model B?

I remember seeing some time ago that people had created a small cluster of these boards, not for this sort of work though. I'm assuming that me chaining a couple of the boards I linked to together is not going offer me any real advantages unless the emulators are specifically configured to run on something like that? I'd imagine that would really be of use to people creating their own software?

Is it a full size SD card that it uses? Is there a maximum capacity limit?

I'll have to order a cheap keyboard and mouse to set it up as I'm a Mac user and I believe the keyboard does;t work due to it being a hub and I use a magic trackpad.

I highly recommend creating a backup image once you feel like you've got it the way you want or somewhat there. At least you can use the image and save som of the headache rather than reformatting it all the time. I squally have a image with all the games scrapped already.

Get the model you listed.

I don't think retropie can support raspberry pi clusters, so don't buy more than one unless you need to do something else on another.

Hey guys. I could not find any good videos on Youtube of Retropie on a Raspberry Pi 3 running MAME and using scanline output. Does anybody use scanlines? Does it hit performance hard on the Pi 3?

It's a micro SD. I believe 32 is the recommended max, but most people here don't report any issues going above that. I'm using a 64 gig card in my primary pi without any problems.

You shouldn't need a mouse, but having a cheap USB keyboard cones in handy. Never know when you will want to make some changes down the line where the keyboard will make it a much simpler process.

You can even use a 128go card on a pi3. No issues on mine

will do for sure. I am just frustrated that nothing works out of the box. Like now ES is popping up the "new gamepad detected" dialogue every time, despite me havin it paired for a few days now... I am currently running an update for all packages, maybe hat helps. Otherwise it's wipe time again ;)

Maybe just format and start a new installation. Can be faster. And install that browser manager core.

I lost some scrap data when I turn off the power before shut down the system by the menu.

Thanks Omega Man. I subscribe to ETA Prime and saw that video already, but that video only showed the shader working for Final Burn Alpha. I know he says the same can be done for MAME. Hopefully the performance is the same on both.
I see, there is some performance hit with scanlines for older Pies, but you should be OK with a Pie3

Well, procedure is the same for all libretro cores. If you use advmame you can select some shaders in the GUI's video options with no performance hit.

I did think it would be a silly idea, otherwise everybody would be doing it.

I've gone for 32GB as I think that will be more than enough for now. It's cheap enough to upgrade at later date if I want to. I've also ordered a cheap keyboard which should be fine for me.

I think I'm going to order the official case too, are there any negatives about this particular case? I don't really want anything that looks too flashy and this seems to be suitably understated. Unless there's a different case that people do recommend for some reason?

I'm going to download PIXEL too so I can at least have a proper look at the OS before it turns up.

When it comes to emulation, am I going to have issues running anything uptown NeoGeo, CPS 1/2/3, SEGA "Model" & Naomi level boards?

EDIT:
I'm in, I've placed the order.

I need to have a proper read through this thread and try and find some useful videos on YouTube to see what I can pick up before it arrives and I start messing around with it this weekend. Can anybody recommend some YouTube channels worth subscribing to?

EDIT 2:
I've managed to find my wired 360 controller, that's good news. It's not the best controller for some systems but at least I'll have it ready to go when the board turns up.

Just buy one that you like the look of. The only reason to go a little overboard is if you want a case that has fans to overclock it. I went with a 3d printed case that looks like an NES for mine.

You shouldn't have any issue with the systems you listed. I was just playing some 3rd strike a few days ago.

My screen will flash black every 5-10 minutes. Anyone have this problem and know how to fix it?

Sounds like a brown out issue. Are you seeing a small rainbow colored square appearing in the corner of the screen too?

That sort of thing commonly happens when the power from the adapter (or the draw of various appendages on said adapter) are insufficient.

Some solutions (not sure what your setup is, btw) would be to lower the volume, or to disconnect unnecessary USB devices, and see if that affects it.

So you have an official Pi raspberry adapter? The 3 has a higher voltage requirement than 2 or 1, I think. You need to make sure the adapter provides enough juice.

Just one possible cause.

Neogeo, CPS123 : perfect
Model 1 : from my experience most games are buggy as hell. Virtua fighter 1 is ok though.
Model 2/3, Naomi : nope, though Dreamcast which is based on Naomi is quite well emulated

Yeah I did it now. Then updated all, then made sure controllers work etc and I did an image.
I still can't get the hotkeys for saving and loading to work in the games, which is super annoying :(
RetroArch problems continue, save config on exit does not stick - menu only works with bluetooth controller but not usb controller and so on.

Thanks for the info regarding capcom cps emulation, this looks like the way to go!

Any recommendations on what USB encoders to use in a bartop?? Would I be better going for an iPac or just the cheap eBay Ines?

Thanks again

I just us a cheap zero delay encoder from eBay and it works pretty well.

So my goal is to build a pi machine inside a dreamcast case.

I would love a machine that can play up through ps2 but I know that's not possible yet.

My question is, if I build a pi3 now how easy is it to migrate everything to another machine later (like a pi4 hypothetically)?

Quite easy, just update the pi through terminal, take out micro and put it into another raspberry pi. Unless there is a major hardware change it should be fine.

I had this problem with hotkeys not working. And was after messing around with retroarch configuration.

I just deleted all the files and folders inside here: \\RETROPIE\configs

They are recreated when you restart retropie. So I got the hotkeys working (after setup the controller in the front-end Emulationstation). Because that I always avoid entering in the Retroarch configuration. But maybe this will delete all the scrapped data. So try erase only the controller settings files.

You also can adjust input editing this file: \\RETROPIE\configs\all\emulationstation\es_input.cfg

Im so so so tired of this shit. The wife wanted kodi added to the box. I installed kodi and it completely screwed up my attract mode set up. I said whatever Ill just using the regular ES.

The problem then became how do I hide the stupid Retropie menu from my kids. Well come to find out there is a kid friendly package you can download. After installing this bullshit I see it doesnt actually do anything besides remove options from the start menu.
Since It doesnt do what I needed it to do I uninstalled it. Once I exited, the Pi froze. Forced to reboot I pull the plug and bam I get the boot screen image but it just doesnt start. From experience I know the only way to fix this is to start over. All my hours and days of work gone because of this stupid fucking package.
I think I'm done with Retropie and Raspberry pi in general. This has been nothing but a headache.
There are to many dumb ways to screw up your work. Im going to pay some fucking scalper and just get an nes mini. What an absolute waste of time.

Edit: And now I cant get my controllers to function correctly. I spent so much time getting this to work now its broken all over again. I'm starting really wish I never bothered with mess.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, so don't take this the wrong way. That's why once you get a system to a good place, take a backup image of it.

What restrictions were you looking for with the kiosk/kid mode? Was it just the retropie menu? I haven't given it a try yet, but it seemed to have the things I would've wanted taken care of. The experimental package status did force me to pump the brakes a bit though.

The Pi tuned up today and I've had a very brief look at and I'll sort it out properly over the weekend.

I have a quick question that I've just thought about though, it asked me which OS to install and I went for the default Pixel OS. Is there a preference as to which OS I should be using if I'm primarily going to be using it for RetroPi?

EDIT:
Is it worth overclocking the Pi? Are there any real benefits when using RetroPi?

I've ordered these heatsinks which will be here tomorrow.

I'm thinking about whether it;s worth combining it with a setup like this. Would that make much of a difference in terms of cooling and would the gains in performance in RetroPi be worth it?

This home made monster is a little excessive for me. 🙂

I feel your pain from reading this. I was really tempted to go this route over the holiday season, I ended up actually getting a steam box streamer and just do it into the front room using steam big picture > emulation station. I've ensured some binds are set up (L3 click to hide mouse, R3 click acting as alt-f4) and I'm basically good to go using it as a way of streaming any of my retro gaming collection to the lounge, rather than buying any extra kit (other than the 15.99 steam box, a fantastic offer over the festive period!). I'd recommend that to you.

I would just install the retropie image. Here is the RetroPie site. It won't run a full desktop environment, so it saves some space and overhead. If you actually want a desktop environment though, Pixel is a fine choice.

I haven't needed to do any overclocking for the stuff I'm playing, but you may as well if you have heatsinks. Not sure what a safe overclock is without active cooling, but hopefully someone else can chime in.
