If you report them then they'll be banned. If it's PSN that is. They act quite promptly.
I would screen shot it and report it via PSN itself, as they will impose account wide sanctions / bans. If you report it in rocket league then they will just impose rocket league specific bans, like restricting voice chat. Personally I'd probably report it both to PSN, and Psyonix. Though the easy way is just to report it in-game, so just that is likely good enough if you don't want to put the effort in, as you might need to message them and provoke them to get their account banned.

I report the message they send, often these messages are racist, crude and / or highly offensive, then I attach the in-game screenshot or recording to this report as supporting evidence that they're an asshole. A few days later I get a message from Playstation that tells me what happened to the user.

I only give shit for selfish play(going for pads and not kickoff), people sitting idle, and the wanna trade kids.
The trash talking has mellowed out since the additional quick chat options were put in. It's mostly sarcastic spamming of Calculated now.
My favorite talk to punish are the "That was luck" people. They tend to shut up when you duplicate that "lucky" move.

You join a match, and immediately you start seeing messages about 'trade?' or 'who has wheels to trade,' etc. Folks looking for items that are only found in crates, that you can acquire by trading stuff with others.

I can list a ton of shit that I've been told by angry kids, and adult male and females over competitive multiplayer games. I find it amusing when the typical 12 year old kicks it into maximum overdrive and considers the "kill yourself" comments to be not-edgy-enough, so they wish cancer or some other terminal illness on your family or "future kids"

This is far from the worst thing I've heard in multiplayer. For stuff like this, just chalk it up to the other person being an immature fuckwad and move on.

I never play a match with voice chat on. I just don't want to hear it. I've long since given up on the "Kumbaya-World" ever manifesting. People are horrible and they will never ever get better. Not sure what to tell you beyond that.

I played Rocket League for the first time in months and its way more toxic than it used to be. I could deal with the spamming of "what a shot", "nice save" etc, but now it seems every other game is a constant barrage of abuse or people asking to trade. I also seem to get spammed with invites whenever I play now too.
I think at this point you should just replace the anonymity with "internet"
