Yep. It debuted on February 25th, 1987, and still puts most modern animation productions to shame.

It also has one of the best soundtracks ever made. Each of the eight OVA episodes had its own soundtrack, and with damn good reason.

Konya Wa Hurricane
Mad Machine
Mister Dandy

I could go on and on and on. The music is all phenomenal.

Let's wax nostalgic, and pretend the remake never happened.

Some of my favorite mechanical designs in anime of all time. 80s 2d animation was so on point there. It's a shame we haven't seen this IP continue in almost 20 years.

I will always <3 Priss.

GIFs encouraged, you say?!?!

I've actually been making a whole shitload of gifs and posting them to twitter, and when you go thru a show frame by frame you notice some things

Insert frames from when Sylia hits Mackie with a newspaper for staring at her cleavage:

A weird Thundercats cameo?!?!:

I've been putting them here as I make them, though I should warn you some of them give me epilepsy concerns

I've never seen the original, only the 2040 remake(?) The original is supposedly a lot better, maybe one day.. it's in my stack of shame.

Funny that I was just listening to Konya wa hurricane in my car earlier today. Forgot about the remake and guess it should stay that way.

My favorite episodes were 5 (midnight rambler) and 6 (red eyes)

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I remember back, 15-16 or so years ago when I was into anime I kept meaning to watch this show but never did.

Have my dvds at my parent's place. Need to do a rewatch on the old dvds (example above). Lovely little series, and so very glad I stumbled upon it in a second hand store many years ago.

Not surprising. Most modern anime is about maximizing production and push as many shows in the shortest time possible. Most of it looks and moves like shit. 80's and 90's anime has more detail in the cells and better animation in general.

Watched it not too long ago. I thought some of the plots were a bit on the forgettable side but super strong visuals and a bangin soundtrack.

Were any of the follow-ups worth watching?

You're comparing 1 hour long Direct to video OVA's sold individually produced during Japan's economic boom and with months inbetween an episode to standard anime.

Let's see what else aired in 1987 on tv:

We did get City hunter in 87, which is great, but the 80's/90's weren't all 5 tone shading and expensive OVA's that were cancelled 8 eps in out of a planned 13 due to budget and internal politics reasons like Bubblegum Crisis

Hellyes, this series inspired the hell out of me. I need to get hands on the DVDs someday...

And yeah, that remake... Ugh. Much like the Dirty Pair remake, it just couldn't hold a candle to the OG.

I'd been saving my Kickstarter Blu-Rays for the 30th anniversary, and promptly missed it by a day. Started my rewatch on the 26th. Will likely take me a week or two to get through it right now though, heh.

Never seen it, but I remember as a kid this was the only anime available in the video store where I grew up. It was grouped with the porn with a big hand written warning on the box that kids shouldn't watch it.

I've always put watching this series off for yeaaars! I remember when I first got into anime almost 20 years ago.. this was recommended everywhere. Hopefully it actually holds up since this thread will finally push me to give it a watch

2040 is one of the worst examples of character assassination since Metroid Other M.

Let's take this group of badass ladies and make them dangerously incompetent. It'll give them the ability to GROW.

Wonderful to see a voice of reason in a thread like this.

Gawwwwd so much this.

Also, IIRC they robbed Priss of like, ALL her personality. Dunno if that changed later since I only made it halfway through the eps before I dropped it.

I had a lot of fun watching this one! It really feels like pure 80s. The soundtrack and animation are still great. I'm really glad I backed the Kickstarter for those Blu-Rays, they turned out really well!

As a kid I always saw this at the Video Rental place and always went "What does this have to do with bubble gum?"

I would always see the VHS for this series at Blockbuster and for sale at Suncoast. Was curious to watch it, but didn't want to spend that money taking a chance on it :p

It is such a shame the series was never completed properly. Then they did 2040 which did have an ending, but the whole series was too shit to make it worthwhile.

BGC was one of my "entry" animes. Was so stunned by the art and episodic stories. The original was such a great series! Moonlight Rambler was one of my fave EPS.
