NieR: Automata Review Thread

Is NieR: Automata the first game to not to expect much from it?

Is NieR: Automata the first game to to have a drunken crazy man as the director?

Order of preferrence for Taro's next project:

1. New IP.
- NieR was connected to Drakengard, but in terms of design, it's effectively a new IP and as we can see, it showcased so much new idea and ingenuity. More new IPs in this industry = better and I'd love to see Yoko Taro take on new ideas.

2. New Drakengard.
- Every time I look at Scalebound, I kept thinking "man, this looks like it could work as the skeleton for a new Drakengard." I feel like if they remove the co-op element from Scalebound, scale back the ambition and fidelity that a AAA Scalebound needed and fixed some stuff, it could work as the basic tech for a new Drakengard that explores the world in a slightly more nuanced way, but still with all the dark and crazy of that world.

3. New NieR/remake
- I don't think there's a need for a new NieR or NieR-like experience so soon. Yoko Taro games are extremely harrowing and sticks onto players like glue well after completion, so it's the kind of games that I don't need to experience in short successions. Give me a different emotional beat before going for another similar one, please.

When they make the next NieR (after the reception this has been getting and the sales in Japan alone I think will justify the cost for another) they should set it in that timezone from Grimoire Nier where there's Red Eye armies everywhere (essentially zombies as the enemies) slowly taking over the world and the disease spreading. I'm sure he could create a great narrative out of that, I mean I thought he could with the bit of the timeline where aliens invade Earth and humans evacuate to the Moon dispatching Androids to fight against the Aliens and the machines (which sounded fuckawesome at the time, kinda ironic the one part of the timeline that sounded the most crazy and interesting actually got a game dedicated to it, haha) and he bloody well has done (at least, so far where I'm up to with it)! I think that Red Eyes bit is the next most interesting sounding part of the timeline and may actually give us some more answers on the Lore/History side of things.

I also wouldn't mind a Nier sequel/prequel that plays off any other ending from Drakengard 1 or the Nier games.

With regards to a new Drakengard, I think Platinum Games would hit it out of the park if they made the next one (bye bye, Access Games!) but I very much would like for Taro to make a new IP next (his mobile phone game might be cool, though). I even wouldn't mind for him to not make an RPG next and make something completely different in another genre entirely.

I never want to limit this man in any way. There's a lore part of me dieing to see the war but it's kinda like saying you want a bioshock game in rapture before it went to shit. Maybe it would kill the magic knowing where we end up. Just as long as he keeps making games, never stop this man from making games. Although real talk I don't see how he can top this one..... then I again I said that 6 years ago.

Media where you already know the conclusion set the mood for me. Usually designed as tragedies, you get to see the decline and reactions to said decline up close.

Anyone know how well the game is selling?
Wondering that myself.

Becuase its kind of a shame, if this wasn't wedged in between Horizon and Breath of the Wild, I could see it doing surprisingly well.

Hopefully it still will despite the also critically raved competition.

This is also a man that loves to fuck with expectations, I can't imagine a game from him where we could see the ending coming. Then again there might be a way for him to still pull that off.

It's selling well in Japan, and it hasn't been a full week so I wouldn't get worried yet. I'm hoping for good sales, as in good enough that they take the series seriously as an ip. I have a hunch this might be a slower burn but word of mouth plus high scores will give it legs.

If Persona 5 gets a lower score than Nier Automata, I will destroy my Persona game disc.

Allright, you are now bound to this bet.

It's selling slightly less than Zelda in Japan lol (I know Zelda isn't big in Japan).

It'll be huge in the west though, mark my words. NieR can 100% sell 1 million copies on Steam alone, as long as its release isn't botched. At least we don't have to worry about Scamco banning people.

Im expecting 120k on steam week 1. The legs of the game depends on the word of mouth and the port quality

Yeah, I'm really hoping we see the DooM 2016 effect. Word of mouth spreads and before we know it it's taking awards out of nowhere, making publications' GOTY lists at the end of 2017.

Yeah, I agree.

Its WOM right now is 🔥🔥🔥 considering Horizon and Zelda just dropped, however. I'm just worried about the early start of Persona 5 promotion.

But Persona 5, like Zelda and Horizon, isn't releasing on Steam. I think PC gamers are the key to NieR's WOM.

In Japan it trounced Nioh and OG NieR (which sold enough to bring about an array of merchandise over there) in its first week, so it's doing well, I think, especially considering the budget and relative to how the first did.

Hope the PC version is good. I think the game can find a pretty sizable audience on Steam as long as the port is on point. No stupid 1080p max resolution BS :(

So i shall proclaim four other disc based videogames owned by thou shall be broken with the might of thou hands if Persona 5 and NieR: Automata indeed end up having the same Metascore.

Yeah devs would be wise to be rid of cavemen era restrictions on PC because that shit tends to eat into their sales via bad steam feedback.

Why not just smash his PS4 with a hammer?

Someone promise to speak to me in early may when I can finally play this game and discuss it. NieR community has been such a good time, in this review thread alone :D

At what price :p

If Nioh can do it, Nier can as well. Believe.

What a tone deaf review. Automata had a fraction of the budget Horizon or Zelda had. The fact that a low budget game looks and plays as well as it does is a goddamn miracle.

And half the review is a tirade against the additional routes by a person who didn't even bother trying them. I'm just glad this messy rant didn't have a score attached.

You can tell the people who've never played a YT game from a mile away...or even a visual novel
