Nioh patch 1.06 drops, adds pause

But seriously, I'm a HUGE dark souls nuts and the number one feature that always bugged me was the no pause in the entire series. Like I get the point for online play and all but It didn't really add much to offline play. And it never really truly bother me but one of those things that seem so minor and pointless.

So I'm cool with this update cause It just seem kinda pointless to take it away to begin with. (Also, the reason I keep hearing is adding tension but I never pause mid boss fight in any game to take a breather, if anything that makes it worse and kills momentum)

Slightly frustrated that they're doing the Souls thing of just saying "adjusted damage/effect/etc." Wish they would be clearer about whether they raised or lowered something. Looks like a good patch though, I think?

Edit: Also, always been slightly baffled when people harp on Dark Souls not having a pause option. You can save and quit at anytime and it will reload you exactly where you are. If you are in a boss battle it'll put you right outside the fog door. The only time this doesn't work is when you're in an active multiplayer session.

I am not against this being added, but couldn't you already technically pause by pressing the PS button? Just curious as I haven't played the game yet.

Thank fucking God

I can't believe we're at the point where pausing needs to be fucking patched in.

Nah, game still goes on in the background.

Dark Souls is a synchronous game, i mean i'm sure dark souls can work with a pause function offline though but this goes to show how developers approach their core styles differently.

The Souls parts of Nioh are the worst parts of the game. Get rid of them, give us full on Ninja Gaiden and Diablo

I'm cool with a pause button. I've had a lot of times where life comes up and I need a pause button, but don't have one. It's optional too, so unless you're some freaky purist, then this is generally good for everybody.

Aside from the pause button: some of those side missions are absolutely nuts. Apparently, there's a new one in the Torii Gate that
makes you fight Oda Nobunaga, Yuki-Onna, and the Obsidian Samurai all at the same time.
Pretty crazy.

But Souls always wants you to be online due to invasions. It's a little more workable in Nioh since the online is an opt in thing.

I understand most of the nerfs but they killed juggling enemies too. I'm going to miss the comedy of an enemy flying up 20 feet.

All of it sounds good. Man i wish i could pause Souls when i'm playing solo offline, it never fails that my kids will pick the one moment that i'm in some intense fight to want my attention.

I'm ready for some new sub missions!

at the minimum it could only be included in offline mode. But even then, it changes the game entirely. I'm against it.
How? Being able to pause an offline game doesn't change the game at all. It merely changes the player from having a full bladder to an empty one.

Look at the souls purists in here already downplaying this.

God forbid someone has an important phone call, has an emergency or heaven forbid, use the fucking bathroom

Have they fixed the problem where the game renders too many frames at the blacksmith causing the fan to go crazy? I haven't picked this up yet and I'm hoping they fix that before I do.

It's in Souls games because those games are always in multiplayer mode.

It's not hard to understand, and no snark is required.
Watch Dogs has multiplayer invasions that work exactly the same way and it still has a pause button.

Guess what's the solution? Pause is disabled during invasions. People can't invade while your game is paused, but if someone is already invading you, you can't pause (you can open the menu but the game doesn't pause)

This is pretty easy to understand, too.

Too bad, just let yourself die in the game you filthy casual who doesn't care enough about the game to ignore everything else going on around them. Pause button ruins the integrity of the game

No excuse FromSoftware can't also do it like this. This 'no pause or casual' going on here is ridiculous lol

People don't like the pause button. What the fuck am I reading?

Phones ring, people knock on the door, pissing and shitting are a thing too.

No pause button, get the fuck.

They did that? Damnit. Meant to practice that eventually.

Last I checked you can play those games offline.

I'm assuming that's what one of the last points on the third image means, could be wrong though.

Also the season pass is on sale so I'll be picking that up. Ends tomorrow at 11AM (EST? not specified).

Where? Maybe I somehow missed a bunch of posts or something but I don't see many Souls purists in here trying to downplay it. There are a couple posters (myself included) stating why they personally enjoy the lack of a pause button, but nothing obnoxious or rude.

The pause is welcome, even though I like the concept of going without. There have been several unfortunate moments where I had to take a loss in Nioh because something more important needed immediate attention and no time to find a safe spot to idle. A quick forced rest mode helped once iirc.

Wasn't aware Souls games required you to be always online.

Last I checked you can play those games offline.

Even when you play in offline mode, there are typically sections in these games where you get "invaded" by an NPC.

Rather than add exceptions for removing pause right as the invader comes in From decided to simply remove pause completely. In my opinion, it's an understandable design decision.

Also you can exit a souls game at almost any time and pick up right where you left off. It's not like you literally can't stop playing to use the john.

And, to clarify, if Nioh added a pause button, that's awesome. I have no complaints or downplaying about that at all.

Exit the game, TCB, come back, resume.

Please explain why it wouldn't be ok to pause during a NPC invasion and please elaborate on how completely removing pause is in any way better to how Watch Dogs handles it. (see my post above)

I didnt know there was no pause but I think it's ridiculous that some people will act like the Souls Series is tougher because of no pausing. You just stand somewhere where there are no enemies, or kill the enemies first. And then you leave your guy standing there and go do what you have to do.

Souls is more difficult and it has nothing to do with pausing.

I'm fine not being able to pause in the Souls games because you can save and quit at anytime and resume literally exactly where you were. Only exceptions to this are boss battles (the game will put you right outside the fog door) and when you're in an active multiplayer session. If there is a call or the doorbell rings or something you can just save and quit and you won't lose any progress.

Nioh needed a pause button though because when you save and quit in that game you always (as far as I know) reload at a shrine and you can actually lose progress.
