Splatoon 2 Testfire Thread: This is a port...able game now

Chargers still more effort than what is worth for non single point objective game modes. Their special is pretty bad, though a damage buff could help it a little.

Should just faceroll with splattershot and rollers until the full game and ranked comes out lol

Gonna try this tonight since I missed out. How is the impressions of gyro in portable mode.

I tried portable mode once after 50 mins of gameplay on the pro controller and the difference was immediate, however I felt like throwing up after just one game. Felt just like the Wii U gamepad honestly. The pro controller was really good too, it's just a matter of getting used to it.

I'm going to have to talk my friends into getting this, or finding new ones, feel like this could be lot of fun with a team.

I really liked the special for chargers. Got far more kills with it than any other special (bar the dualies). I agree they're more of a objective based weapon than turf war though.

Wow walls don't count for turf? It's little things like that that they could have just explained in the tutorial.
Displaying enemy ink that is vertically placed on walls for you to clean up would be almost impossible to display on a map, very hard to comprehend (think about analyzing Metroid Prime's 3D map during an intense fire fight or a 7 second respawn, and the game would be very irritating if you had to clean walls to score or recover points.

Ooooo that's another thing the game didn't explain and I forgot it was even a thing. How do you do a dodge roll?

Game actually does mention it, while shooting press the B button.

By faceroll, I mean autopilot, like using Vergil in UMVC3. I think only the dualies have that dodge roll thing, which I haven't played yet, but I'm assuming you're vulnerable for a few frames after exhausting your rolls.... can someone confirm lol

From what I noticed is that you can shoot right after the dodge, however if you roll into someone you're screwed.

First time playing any Splatoon before, pretty slick! I had about 10 disconnects through the hour, but I still got maybe 5 full matches in. I like how quick they are, makes for great pick up-put down play.

I have trouble seeing how other weapons can match the roller, but I'm sure strategies came out in the original Splatoon to beat it. Definitely a really cool concept.

If the internet is smooth by launch, and they show enough different modes/single player stuff I'll definitely consider this day one.

Yeah, that sounds about right regarding the dualies.

As long as it's fine. I've haven't played the first game so I was unsure of how it was gonna be, plus I'm gonna be playing it on portable majority of the time so wanted to make sure it'd would be fine on there.

Rolls drain ink and you are stuck in place for a second unless you roll again
lol yeah, I was like NO, GO UP! GO UUUUUP! That'll take some getting used to.

It kept happening in later matches too 8D
Hit jump for a short height boost, can squid with it too

Had another match with the pistol shit and went 9-1 as well. For being brand new, I'm pretty good...I think. Using the Pro controller and no gyro. Default aim sensitivity. Felt so good to Spawn camp a team at one point lol. No lag whatsoever too.

Impressions

Netcode:
Seems solid so far. Against the few jp players I played it seems to hold up a bit better than Splatoon 1, though still felt iffy at times. Matchmaking overall was iffy as well for this first stresstest. I personally had no disconnects (apart from the moment my switch just totally stopped connecting to the internet once), but there were a lot of matches that ended with disconnecting players, leaving the game in a 3v4 or 2v4 state which completely ruins matches in this game. I'd say about 50% of my matches had disconnecting players.

Controls:
Played with the joycons + grip. Worked surprisingly well honestly. After Zelda I felt like the gyro was a bit iffy, but it's completely solid in here. I do feel the Pro controller is gonna play way better with this game as the buttons on the joycon feel to close together, I definitely pulled the map screen up a couple of times while I was in a panic situation. Gonna try handheld mode next hour, see how that plays out.

Gameplay:
Just your good old Splatoon, it honestly feels like the exact same game to me. I spend most of my time trying to figure out everything new so I don't have specific impressions for weapons yet. I will say I'm not a fan of how the new map screen works, just a bit too intrusive and the direction you have to press for a specific teammate is too subtle, makes me look to the map too long.

Graphics:
Not a big upgrade over Splatoon 1 and there's a weird filter over it, might just be AA or something. Disliked the washed out look it gave the game on my tv. I remember Splatoon looking more crisp. The new visual details in the maps and on the characters are nice though.

Overall a fun time, looking forward to the next hour.

Okay, yeah, I suspected as much... so just punish the recovery of someone that spams roll lol

(though the footage you posted is nice and I'll probably give it a go later after seeing the changes they made to rollers)

How are folks feeling about the maps? These 2 seemed a little...generic to me.

It's like they took a map from the original game and decided to cut the enemy 1/3 and yours, so the maps only consist of mid (which is great as usual) with practically nothing in between mid and your base.

As a result the maps feel too compact, and the respawn timer is the same which means you're back to contest for the objective pretty much immediately.

This was super fun! And the whole aesthetic is so refreshing compared to the usual gruff angry shooters.

Anyone have a link to the Giant Bomb stream?

Also gyro aiming + handheld mode is really not my thing. It's OK for archery in Zelda but not for something as fast and competitive as this. So I'll play the next hour on my TV and see how that goes.

EDIT - Also it looked pretty great to me, I'm glad I'm able to actually enjoy video games without counting pixels but each to his own I guess.

The campaign in the original was a blast. One of the best final boss fight sequences ever.

I played probably 9-12 matches. Can't remember exactly. Had multiple games with every weapon, and everything felt great; I had to crank up my camera and gyro sensitivity a bit right away, but after that it felt spot on.

Rollers are still pretty OP so... nothing changed there. Hope splat data convinces them to tone down their ranged attack a bit. Specials all felt pretty good with the exception of the ink jet, which just moves way too slow. The charger felt really anemic compared to every other weapon. No real incentive to use it other than to have suction bombs.

Overall it was nice. I played a bit at the preview event in NYC in December and it's the same build I guess. Weird aliasing and some blocky hands / fingers on the toons that will hopefully get polished before launch. They still have months to go, so I have high hopes.

Day one.
Still? Have you not played splatoon 1 since the test fire? Or do you mean since you played it at the preview event.

AMD the charger incentive is range...obviously

I should have been more clear, the portable mode gyro felt superior. Maybe it's because I'm used to the gamepad playing 2 years now. However since you're moving the screen itself = unplayable

Oh dope. Thought it was all controlled by terrain under you. Thanks, I'll try that out tonight.

It's a mix of both which is kinda weird at first

Honestly it's not that simple, specially once ranked comes around and ambushes become more viable. It's burst dmg from a good player is crazy. Range is meh tho. Def going to be the agressive high skill ceiling weapon type of the game

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
being able to pick up the device and quickly jump into an online match is going to be so addicting

can't wait to unlock some clothes

Smooth as butter, stunning textures, colours pop on Switch screen.

Sounds good. Lol, I almost forgot TV mode isn't a must anymore.

Did anyone else play in handheld mode?
Did anyone try both modes? If so, how well did the controls and visibility hold up on the smaller screen?

Played the test fire. Yep it's splatoon (I had it on wii u).

Used the pro controller and it was great. Gonna try handheld mode and with the joy-con.

Do you have RGB range set up correctly on both your TV and Switch? I can't imagine anyone describing the game I just played as washed out.

I had no problems at all in handheld mode with gyro (top scorer in three out of four matches I played), but different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
