Biggest question mark is cinematics if they're bothering to remake the campaigns which i'm sorta doubting. There's a fair few so it wouldn't be cheap and Blizzards current artstyle for games is pretty shit in terms of matching teh tone of the original.
This would be remaster, not a remake. IE basically HD resolution, so campaigns would be automatically working.
Whether they touch the cutscenes is another matter.

They definitely won't remake them in 2017 Blizzard CGI quality, but high res, narrated artworks (maybe slightly animated like their OW comics) would be a lot better than the ugly 90s CGI in my opinion.

Just a reminder, 19 year anniversary of Broodwar will be celebrated this weekend in Korea with a Legends Match! Casters are ofc Tastosis. Full info @ http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/20569786

I'm so ready to construct additional pylons.

I made my parents get a second phone line back in the day from playing so much Brood War. Memories.

Man I hope this is true, you can't buy the game on the Blizzard store anymore. It's sold out (lol)
This to me is the proof it's true, if it doesn't happen this time I'm gonna have trust issues

God how sweet would it be if the legends matches are on Brood War HD

24 hours or so until we find out for sure. Could we get a countdown in the OP? Hoping to God this is real, Starcraft/Brood War is one of my favourite games of all-time.

Please let there be a Mass Recall style single player campaign. I'd jump in in a heartbeat.

I live in the suburbs of Seoul and don't have any plans tomorrow. I don't have a ton of interest in Starcraft (was always more of an Age of Mythology kind of guy), but I might go check this out. Trying to find out more information on the actual event, not sure if I need to buy tickets or how this works.

Dude Age of Mythology was the absolute bomb! I loved that game! It's a crime that it never got a full fledged sequel like Empires did.

This is what they should have done for Diablo, but failed. I'm all for a StarCraft remaster, but really want a Diablo 2 remaster.

I mean with the old Warcrafts they *kinda* have a point. Those games don't really hold up without nostalgia

Starcraft is timeless tho. I hope this is true
Yeah old RTS like FPS don't hold up well mechanically. I'd say Warcraft I and II and Age of Empires fit into this carefory. But with StarCraft I do think it holds up well, probably because of its isometric 2D format versus the early 3D and you had quality of life stuff like hot keys and the like.

Open thread to see info on StarCraft remaster rumors, only sees something about an event in Korea:

Original article said it would be revealed as soon as next week (this week) and would be announced in Korea. Which is why the new details on a I <3 Starcraft event in Korea makes this rumor pretty plausible.

Does it matter if it's just a tab in SCII instead of a separate game as long as it plays like you expect?

I'm not expecting campaigns to be included. It's probably just something they've built for competitive scene.

Totally disagree with this. Warcraft 2 and age of empires 1 and 2 are still fantastic to play IMO. Warcraft 2, Starcraft and AOE2 remain the best RTS games to this day (BW > AOE2 > WC2). Starcraft is by far the best but the others are still good.

Brood War still works for me. This would be popular, tho.

I agree with you there. The graphics and gameplay are timeless as far as I'm concerned. This would breathe life into the competitive scene and may get more casual players back on board though. It's also just another excuse to play through the game again.

Campaigns not being included would be a travesty. They're fantastic and a big part of why I love the game. Making it a tab in SC2 requires you to own SC2 which seems an unnecessary burden. This should be it's own thing.

Hoping they modernize the interface some, at least in the campaigns. That or add difficulty options to it. I really liked the campaigns but found them too hard with no cheat codes.

I'd say it's almost definite this is being announced tomorrow, as a strong move to reinvigorate Starcraft in Korea, hence the announcement being planned for there. Blizzard must have seen Brood War's resurgence in popularity and SC2 falling off an absolute cliff (the Kespa teams disbanding and so on) and calculated both together to equal SC1 Remastered as their solution.

Strongly expect the campaigns to be included and this to remain extremely faithful to the original. Looking forward to tomorrow.

cant wait

People really care about the campaign???

The campaigns are fantastic, both SC and BW.

I'll pay whatever amount they want for this, Starcraft is a fucking great game. Now they just need to remaster Warcraft 3, Diablo 1 (not the 1 month only anniversary D3 event), and Diablo 2 and we'll be set.

Yes?

Starcraft campaign has such memorable moments. Mengsk's chilling betrayal of Kerrigan and the inauguration speech, the evil that oozes from the Overmind through the Zerg campaign, rebirth of Kerrigan, the Protoss desperate fight and Tassadar's badassery in general.

Gameplay-wise, they are dated. But few RTS campaigns have such a great cast of characters, general style and mood and neat twists in the story.

The SC1 original campaign is godlike. Such a great, engrossing and compelling story. My teenage mind was blown away back in the day when I played them. SC1's campaigns are superior to SC2s in almost every way outside of being dated, particularly graphically which hopefully this remaster will remedy. I'd be there day one to play through them again.

Hoping to God we get remastered campaigns Mass Recall style. Going to sleep soon but really looking forward to the news tomorrow.

So whats the consensus on what the game speed should be?

Original ladder speed, fastest SC speed, or too fast and crappy like SC2.

I hope the Koreans will reject this and just continue to play on fish. Fuck off, Blizzard.

You literally don't know what this is. If it's just a HD version of brood war I don't see the problem. You can always feel free to play the original anyway.

Edit: blizzard totally fucked over Starcraft Korea and worldwide and basically killed it as an esport. Like you I'll always be frustrated about that. However that won't stop me from wanting a brood war remaster and hope that it reinvigorates the game in Korea a little bit.

You don't seem to know much about the scene. The game is alive and played a lot, even more than just a year ago. Koreans play on fish.
We also had a team tournament that just concluded (last week) with a standard one coming up soon (and even apart from that there were all the SSLs in the past years + what came from LoveTV).
