The lack of new game announcements for the Nintendo Switch.

I'm really REALLY worried. I just bought the console and I have absolutely nothing to play on it. Bought Zelda for Wii U, played lots of MK8 on Wii U, Disgaea 5, I Am Setsuna on PS4 and Puyo Puyo Tetris on Vita.

When I look at release calendar next game that I'm interested is Skyrim, which I never have played, is coming out in September. there is Dragonball Xenoverse 2 and Steep but none of those has release dates.

As a person who bought every single console since Dreamcast on their launch week, I can say Switch is having worst first year ever for me. I desperately need some game new announcements. Preferably some non-indie (is there a such term?) stuff, which console is lacking of.

from the nindies direct, there were some good looking games (and other indies announced outside of that)

They're all fucking TBA, so they dont mean anything when looking at whats coming up until they actually get a date.

I played MK8 on the wii u, not worth buying again.

This is why the switch can never be my main console, and it isn't. I have a pc and the other 2 for this exact reason because being Nintendo only would never work for me.

It's not ok that the release calendar looks as bad as it does, but it's fine to me because ps4 and PC exist
? All games shown in the nindies showcase were slated for 2017.

I mean... Why did you buy the hardware if you didn't plan on playing any of the launch games? Not trying to be snarky here, just genuinely curious. Anytime I buy a new piece of tech I try to use it for everything I can.

Why did you buy the console this early if there was nothing you wanted to play on it?

If E3 comes and goes and then TGS comes and goes and you can say the same thing OP, then that's when we should be worried, not 3 weeks after launch in March.

Me personally, I have 8 games already. Haven't started 4 of those, and outside of Zelda, the others have only been played for a couple of hours. Over the next month I know there are at least 4-5 games I want (Snake Pass, Wonder Boy, Mario Kart, Puyo Pop Tetris and Lego City Undercover). and thats before the "April" Indies like Shakedown Hawaii, Graceful Explosion Machine and Mr Shifty come in to reckoning. There might not be any real powerhouse exclusives, but there's a shit tonne of games to keep me busy!

If it's any consolation, Nintendo at recent E3s has generally announced 1-2 significant games that still come out the same calendar year, and at Nintendo Directs has almost always announced one or more significant games that release within 3 months of the Direct or during the same calendar year they're announced. Including titles that release the same day.

Examples of the above include:

Mario 3D World
Kirby 3DS games
Majora's Mask 3D
Rhythm Heaven Megamix
BOXBOXBOY!
Link Between Worlds
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

I think we may see a Direct before E3, as well. But either way, I imagine there are still more unnannounced downloadable and retail first party games coming this year and within 12 months of launch.

People, how did you buy a Switch and not know about the state of the lineup? Seriously. I looked at the shot of the games that has been posted again and again in this thread and I knew going into this thing that those might be ALL the games for this year. I mean I want to hope that E3 will bring some new announcements but that's not a promise and I think everyone needs to be ready for that.

Personally, I'm hoping they announce like 6-12 or so Wii U games are coming to the Switch eshop, a new Metroid is announced, and maybe some other surprises but this is Nintendo we are talking about here so you gotta keep it real. We might get more 1,2 Switch styled games announced and then a picture of Reggie doing that shrug. No one knows.

If you bought a Switch and were counting on getting more announcements in the first month, you didn't do your homework.

The better question is, which approach would be better for Nintendo?

Sony: Announce and build hype for all games coming out, regardless of how long until they finally release and how much people have to wait for them.

Microsoft: Announce games coming out only during their current calendar year, but possibly alienate fans because they don't see much content to justify purchasing their console.

There's positive and negatives to either approach, but not sure which one is better.

Is there a text or spreadsheet version of this anywhere?

I guess what's bothering me is that new games are being announced all the time and the NS isn't really part of those announcements. Destiny 2 will be unveiled soon and I think we can all put our money on there not being a NS version of that game. So it's just another game announced recently that isn't coming to the platform. Just seems strange to wait until E3 for that NS announcement, when games are getting announced every few days for every other platform.

I expect these threads to appear more often as more people finish Zelda. I'm worried about it myself, or at least I'm considering buying games I wouldn't normally like Snakepass just so I have something to play. Unfortunately the next games I'm really interested in are Mario Kart and Puyo Puyo, and both are releasing like 3 days apart in like a month.

Don't sleep on Snipperclips though, people. Great game as well (though it is very short).

Expecting third party western AAA games to come to Switch though... not happening soon, OP.

Echoing others, I'd say wait until E3 for panic time. Nintendo absolutely has games to announce, and I'd imagine certain third parties do as well.

Im ok with the first year of the switch all this will keep me busy

Lego City Undercover
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers
ARMS
Splatoon 2
Fire Emblem Warriors
Super Mario Odyssey
Sonic Forces
Xenoblade Chronicles X (if it comes i really really want it this year but im expecting 2018)
Sonic Mania
Yook-laylee

i already got 7 games for my switch there is also the chance that we could get 1 or 2 more first party games in the second half of the year so im gonna be content but i can see where some people arent excited as not everyone enjoys everything Nintendo puts out.

Who knows where Nintendo has fucked up this time. "Combining platform efforts" has somehow failed to improve the lineup density of their previous drought machine, while things like Wii and 3DS still had blowouts multiple times bigger. Not to mention that the measly support from Japanese 3rd parties on a handheld system like the Switch is very dubious. I guess they're all feeling comfortable either on PS4 or mobile and Nintendo has once again failed to improve relations.
Is this a joke post?

I think going in to this thing you may have had the wrong expectations then, if something like Destiny 2 not being announced for Switch disappointed you.

Devs only started with this device at most 12 months ago, and that is only key partners, games like Destiny 2 and Shadow of Mordor 2 will have been in development much longer than that so a Switch port isn't happening straight away in most instances.

Let's be real here - despite the Switch showing great signs - it's only been three weeks! If you ran a company with outgoings, employees and profit would you make such fast decisions?

That's the downside of being an early adopter. Once you've exhausted the current lineup (that you're interested in), there's not much else to do besides wait.

I don't mean to be rude, but you honestly should've expected this. Those big, Western AAA games aren't coming to the Switch. That's been obvious for a while, it's just not that powerful. Destiny 2 won't be on Switch. RDR 2 won't be on Switch. The next CoD won't be on Switch. Good chance the next Assassin's Creed will skip Switch. The next Bethesda game will most likely skip Switch. The big AAA games aren't coming. Don't hold your breath. If this thing is a runaway success, we'll get downports that are relatively barebones. The Switch is a Nintendo + indies machine, with a sprinkling of Japanese publishers. If that's not enough then you might want to sell the console. You can probably get at least face value if you sell it now

It has to be. Nintendo clearly said that devs started getting units last summer, and we will start seeing those game in a years' time (starting this summer). Combining consoles will pay dividends, especially in late 2017 and on. Not sure what that poster is talking about.

Heh, only using that as an example. I'm not interested in Destiny 2 unless they add in IR/gyro aiming a la Splatoon 2. But making a point that there have been many game announcements recently so this need to wait until E3 shouldn't be necessary. If new games aren't being announced, then let's talk about the ones that are coming. We can't even do that since even those devs aren't talking about them.

I'm gonna pick up Snake Pass, because I enjoyed their video blogs and they really got behind their game and got me excited. That would be enough for me.

E3 is 2.5 months away. That doesn't feel close to me.

So we're gonna spend over 3 months after a systems launch without any announcements because E3 is "close".

That's kind of frustrating. TBH I'm keeping my expectations in check: Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey this year. Not gonna expect anymore.

Uhhh ARMS, Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2? They announced most of their new games through the end of the year. Maybe we will have a surprise or two at e3, but I think Nintendo itself putting out 5 games (Mario, Zelda, Splatoon 2, ARMS, and XC2) seems pretty reasonable for a developer. I think it's a safe bet that Mario will at least be pretty good and Splatoon 2 will likely be good as well. When a company puts out anywhere from 3-5 really high quality games per year, I think that's impressive.

They announced a slew of indies that seem to fit well on the system as well.

Think of the end of the year, these will be the "big" games at the very least(unless we get delays):

Zelda: BotW, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, and ARMS (I think it will be decent at the very least). That seems like a hell of a good exclusive lineup for the first nine months of any console's lifespan to me. I think the platform lends itself real well to indies as well. I know I have zero desire to play them on my PC if I can just play them on my Switch.

Console launches usually don't have many good games. I think the Switch is not an exception in that regard, but I don't think it's much worse than any other console either.

For any company, it takes 3-6 months to start going from the red to green, and Nintendo is no exception. Sure, they have other ways of revenue outside of Switch (3DS, smartphone, merchandise, etc.), but strictly talking about Switch, we won't have a good idea of how it's doing until 3-6 months from now, which coincidentally starts with E3.

This is gonna be a Nintendo 1st party + small indies console, with a few subpar ports of bigger 3rd party games (not the biggest ones, mind you) sprinkled here and there. Anyone who expects more will be disappointed. Personally, I bought it for the Nintendo games (already worth it to me because of BotW), and probably some of those indies. For the rest I have my PS4.

You really can't say that for the next CoD and AC, those have been on Nintendo consoles, especially CoD, and they aren't porting those games over not because of power, they literally ported CoD to the wii and was consistently getting a million+ sales, it would be because they couldn't find a audience

People that want AAA console games on the Switch,

Please take a look at the port of Dragon Quest Heroes I & II to the Switch and imagine all ports of demanding games are of such quality. You won't like it. And that port isn't that bad because of 'lazy developers' or anything like that, but because the Switch simply isn't as powerful as the PS4.

I think what's troubling is a lack of output from Nintendo's studios the last two years of the Wii U, and still be lacking first-party exclusive content the inaugural year of the Switch.

I can see third parties sending their 5 year-old games to the Switch to die, but it seems like Nintendo even got caught off-guard.

I'm done with Zelda, and now I play the "hope" game, dusting my Switch every couple weeks.

A lot of the games announced recently will already have been worked on for years, and for time before the switch was even announced, so makes sense some of missing it.

Japanese support will start trickling in before the deluge, it wasn't there day 1 for PS4 and it took 6-9 months before solid third party Japanese support began appearing.

erm, you what? Gonna need to see the proof here, pretty much everyone has said it's a rush job port hence the lack of optimization. We all know it's not as powerful as the PS4 but DQ Heroes 1+2 should be running much better on this thing.

As long as Odyssey drops this year they have my Switch purchase locked. It's really all I want lol. Already have BotW and Mario Kart but might sell those off and re-buy.

1-2-Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms and Splatoon 2 within six months. I wouldn't call that 'lacking first-party exclusive content'. And who knows what follows in the Fall.

That's not really why the games aren't coming to Switch. Or did X1 and PS4 miss out on lots of big AAA games early in their lives?

That game could have looked a lot better if the devs kept it in the oven a little longer. Thats the problem though, the deficiencies of the Switch do cause developers to spend a little longer on the ports, and time is money. So in each case, they have to decide whether or not the game would be profitable on Switch when factoring the additional development cost. And we'll find a lot of 3rd parties, just like with Wii U, will decide against porting to the Switch. Not because its impossible due to restraints, but just because it takes a lot of extra time and money to make those adjustments.

Exactly. I don't blame the "rough" quality of DQ Heroes 1+2 on lazy developers. I actually blame it on them having to rush to meet a deadline, which is making sure it was ready for launch. That's what really hurt that game.

Yup the fact that publishers aren't even talking about their already announced Switch games is most concerning. Square Enix is about to announce the release date for DQXI on 3DS and PS4 and haven't even acknowledged the Switch version. ;_;

Breath of the Wild isn't an exclusive.

1, 2 Switch is absolute garbage.

Mario Kart 8 is a port.

ARMS and Splatoon 2 qualify, do they have firm release dates?

I'd say the Switch is pretty unique to launch with one of the best games ever created.
Can't imagine that happens very often.
