Xbox Scorpio reveal on Thursday at 2pm UK / 6am Pacific by Eurogamer/DF

DF is an interesting choice. Damage control, perhaps, if Scorpio is indeed Jaguar based. By giving the main spec analysis outlet the exclusive, it stops that same outlet criticising it.

Or, perhaps it isn't Jaguar, and they've chosen DF as a good place to start the hype.

This is a reasonable assumption, thought the same thing.

Give us something that fits in with the current design languages.

The design of the Surface Studio is a testament to the design prowess of the surface team. That small box houses the power supply for both an i5 processor and the 28" 4500x3000 screen. Can't wait to see what Scorpio look likes

Also, they have been working on it for quite awhile and have some pretty smart folks on the task. It's not exactly being rushed and I am sure they know how to manage their timeline without your advice.

After the Xbox One launch I don't know if we can assume such a positive outcome. Word is there was a lack of communication within the company that led to it being what it was. Have they learned? We will see, but it's not an assumption anymore. Same with Sony after the PS3 and Nintendo with the Wii U.

This Thursday is going to be epic.

1) Zen, 12GB GDDR5 RAM, all the CUs, all the RUs, water cooling system, $399, 6.5TF, internal power brick, slightly bigger than Xbox One S.

2) Xbox One S price reduced to $250 permanently

3) Microsoft announces the purchase of three new 1st parties

4) Microsoft announces the creation of three new in-house 1st parties

5) Turn10, Playground, 343, and The Coalition all announce that they are working on new IPs

6) Sunset Overdrive 2, Ryse 2, Quantum Break 2, Alan Wake 2 announced

Fingers crossed for the main event.

7) Bungie returns to Microsoft

8) Halo 6 announced by Bungie, almost complete.

9) New Bungie IP bigger than Halo coming six months after Halo 6

10) Destiny starts to make sense

You'd better be confident with final specs if you're going to mass produce and ship this 6 months later, of course this is final spec.

This is still propaganda through a reputable site

I get you, a bit. Some game reviews backfired hard in the past because publishers demanded guaranteed high scores in exchange for the 'privilege' to review their game exclusively. But I somehow doubt this is the case here. It is actually pretty normal for companies like intel, nvidia or amd to give reviewers access to their stuff. They normally don't do this exclusively and send their tech to all kind of people like YouTubers, various sites and magazines. The problem with console tech is: There is only one reputable, well known and trusted review site; Digital Foundry. Who else could do a scorpio preview better? Or at all?
That said, it is always smart to be a bit sceptical if it is an exclusive preview/review deal. That's one of the reasons why we want reviewers and YouTubers to state if they were paid for a promotion/review. But DFs reputation is their biggest asset and they'd be idiots to risk it.

Journalistic exclusive to sell you a box with specs, yes

smh

But... it's Digital Foundry's business to do deep dives on technology.

On one hand, here you have Microsoft looking to sell a console to a market that isn't theirs anymore. They've built a very capable machine and are looking to make a big impact with its announcement.

On the other, you have Digital Foundry—perhaps the most respected outlet there is for in-depth analyses on hardware and technology in the gaming world.

Microsoft has, correctly as far as I'm concerned, surmised that a mere press conference isn't going to do it for them. They need to earn back respect. How do you do that? You give an exclusive piece to a publication that knows their shit.

I don't know the details of Microsoft's offer... but I can safely assume they wouldn't even dream of approaching DF with a sponsored content deal or a written piece from a Microsoft engineer—the fallout would be absolutely insane. Instead, they're offering the console on a platter for them to tear down and analyse to the nth degree because, for whatever reason, they're confident in their product.

Please explain to me what part of this you have a problem with.

Don't worry about it, I'm not easily offended......But the real question is this....?..How many console manufacturers are taking the hit on hardware anymore..Look at PS3, that console is still not under $200.00 with a proper harddrive......

I guess if people see value in a product, they will buy it, but the biggest issue for MS is not even packing in the best console specs, but to offer some good exclsuives with these good specs...It has to work in tandem, so people can see the value.....

So yes, I'm thinking the specs will be descent to good on scorpio, but I'm more interested in how much better MS based games look/perform on that system as opposed to an XB1S etc...

Agreed. I think they have bigger hurdles to clear in terms of getting people to believe in Xbox again in terms of having a stable of meaningful exclusives, and I don't think they want to have a prohibitively high msrp for the box. I really think $399 is the target. $450 would be a stretch.

that's an interesting angle, a lot of folks are seeing DF being used as making Zen more likely, but maybe they chose DF to assuage folks upset about it in fact being Jaguar
Just going to make this point again. If the article is posted and doesn't clearly say it's sponsored, it's not a paid for, advertisement piece which can't express criticism. It will be an unbiased breakdown for a reveal of a console.

I very much doubt that DF would praise MS for putting in Jaguar. Theyll express their disappointment just as we all will here.

Chuffin using DF as damage control. This place sometimes.

It's not even 50/50...but if they really did it, it's an automatic death for ps4 pro and an acceleration for the PS5 coming. Though it seems really hard to believe.

This gen will be four years old when Scorpio launches. The PS4 has a very strong software lineup this year. So why switch? Xbox 1 and Gamecube were much more powerful than PS2, but they had no chance against PS2. 95% of the console gamers don't care about hardware specs.

Sony fanboys out in full-force in this thread. The hate towards Microsoft using DF as a means to talk about specs is really cute.

What happens if DF does not like it ? All tech sites are going to report it. MS would sue their asses - so DF has to thread carefully. Basically, DF *can't* say anything bad about it

It's really bizarre if they don't show one new thing.

We've not seen Crackdown in 18 months, state of decay yet to get gameplay unveiling, and forza motorsport 7… turn10 run a great franchise and a game launches every year, they should be showing something new with it, and comparing it to the XB1/PC versions

Yeah I don't like it one bit that we haven't seen much of Crackdown at all and all we had to work with was Phil saying it looks and plays great. But I am hoping they will impress us with it at E3. Hopefully it looks amazing and is something to look forward to. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they say MP had been finished for a while and that they were working on the SP now? Which then makes me wonder why not show some MP footage? But we'll see at E3. This is a very important title.

I think the main exciting times ahead for Xbox fans is simply an amazing boost mode. No patches needed for possibly 4k30/60 and guaranted 1080 60 on all existing software out of the box.

Of course new games will get the "pro" style bells and whistles. And I think it will come with the Xbox elite controller.

The name will be Xbox one elite. Throw back to the good ol' 360 days.

This just in.. no tech site should be sponsored by any product ever... unless they can be sponsored by every product ever....

And no tech site should get exclusive previews of upcoming tech.. that would be unfair.

XD

Then they don't like it.

Microsoft is just confident in showing them their hand.

There is no way this article isn't going to have negatives in it; all consoles have compromises.

What legal precedent would they be able to sue Digital Foundry on? Please cite an example.

People thinking this is gonna be anymore than a spec showcase are going be severely disappointed. They are almost certainly not going to be making any software announcements on Thursday.

without a patch games won't magically go to 4k if 1080p is the hardcoded max res nor will they go to 60fps if they are locked to 30fps

don't expect to be able to play all unpatched older games at 1080p 60fps on day one

I honestly don't know what they can show that will make it a better choice than getting a PC (price aside).

Something that's better at doing what the PS4 Pro does would be pretty darn meh.

So they just dump a bunch of numbers on DF to communicate for them?

Kind of lackluster. I thought they would do an actual event first.

Microsoft will just activate the hidden xbox one GPU, open the flood gates to their cloud servers and every xbone will transform into a scorpio overnight.
This was always microsofts plan, since day one.

I expect a comparison of an already released game. Halo or FH3
