If we are to guess the Xbox One will be $199 by Christmas there is no way MS can justify a $400 gap between the two systems.

Scorpio will be $399.
It has to be 399 if they want it to succeed, if it's 499 or higher than it's in big trouble.

I really don't see how this thing is going to push very many units at retail if the price is expensive. Sitting side-by-side with a < $250 choice that plays the same games, not many people are going to buy the expensive Scorpio. Especially not parents buying one for their kids or their family. It's an adult enthusiast product. Most of the people that care enough about graphical quality to appreciate the system's capabilities would probably build a gaming PC instead. I just don't see anything bigger than a tiny niche for this product.

The sad part is holds true for any price range. Most people are going to feel this way about the Scorpio whether it's $450 or $700. That's not really speculation at all either. It's what's going to happen unless the device happens to have a bunch of surprising, amazing features or games that we haven't considered yet.

It's going to have to be $400 or less to compete.
Exactly but it won't be less than 400,

their are also a lot of people who switch platforms based on performance (look at everyone who switched from xbox 360 to ps4 this gen)

I don't think most people switched between of the slight performance advantage of the PS4 over X1. Most people switched because of MS's poor messaging initially and launch price point ($399 vs $499).

Seriously, until now Zen was downright utopic but with the latest tweets things spun out of control so whatever. Still sounds like a waste to me.

DF did a good job with the Pro, but that's when they had actual games to test and do their pixel and FPS counting and whatnot.
Speculation based on numbers only goes so far IMHO

in previous console generations [based on crazy custom tech?] definitely agree.

nowadays and our x86 based architectures [with the two biggest consoles sharing the same damn processor]? we can speculate super accurately based off numbers.

Yeah, Sony had a winning combo of much better messaging, the power advantage, the price advantage and most of the games library being the same between the two consoles, so it made sense for a lot of people to jump ship this gen.

Steam compatibility.
Plays PS1, PS2, PS3 backward compatible games.
Can run Windows 10 so you have a PC too.

/s.

I can't wait for this reveal, been feeling the need to upgrade to it since the reveal at E3 so I can't wait to hear more about the technical side.

Time to throw down my final predictions:

CPU: 8 physical Zen cores, clocked between 2.4 and 2.8 ghz.
GPU: Vega based. I think the GPU will come in slightly over 6TF, I'm guessing at least 6.1. 48-56 CUs, clocked between 900-1000mhz.
RAM: I think total RAM will be 16GB, with 4GB of DDR3/4 for OS and apps.
Price: I expect this to be revealed at a later time. My guess is $450.

It will be very interesting to learn more about MS's design choices for Scorpio.

Ps4 pro not ps4. I see to accelerate PS5 coming if Scorpio will gain too much ground in US.

Lol you really belive people will abandon their game librarys, friend lists etc just for a bit cleaner picture on Xbox? These half gen increases is for those already incested in the system. And I dont think Sony care that much if Xbox starts doing better in the US they dont get their majority of sales from there like Xbox.

Still remember this..I actually thought the graphics would be that good, lol...Tee he he...

Anywhoo's

I expect a

Scorpio Raven Ridge APU
4cores/8threads
6TF Polaris 580 revision
8-12GB of RAM
UHD Drive
External and SSD Support
802.11ac

Controller with audio jack.

Total Price $599.99

I don't mean this to be condescending, but ask yourself who is actually going to buy this thing at a $600 price point.

To this date no-one has convinced me that the only CPU change we get in 4 years is an upclock to the current CPU. No way it stays Jaguar. I just can't see it.

Microsoft needs to give me a reason why I - as a gamer- should buy an Xbox Scorpio when I got a PC with a 1080 in it.

Just one. Name it. I used to be a huge xbox fan...until I got enough money to buy a decent pc

Digital Foundry now working as agents of the publishers? Well that's me unsubscribed.

Industry is so fucking murky..

what?

how did you come to this conclusion exactly?

they've got exclusive / first release rights to an awesome hardware story...

we should be happy for DF, this will get them some great traffic due to the nature of this news - and it's well deserved based on the quality of their insight, work, and writing.

they are still an independent operation and will continue writing about everything they always have.

i fully expect this article to include some criticisms / concerns of the Scorpio hardware [if they find any].

if anything, just speaks to the confidence MS must have in the hardware.

Microsoft has a lot of games coming this fall. You cant please everyone.

So dont buy Scorpio. Other like me who dont game on a PC will buy it.

Exactly!! Everyone comparing it to sony reasoning for the PRO when MS does there OS different. Excavator has been out for a few awhile in laptops, etc with much better performance at lower power than Jaguar. It makes no sense to dust off Jaguar when they can pick up it's successor that can fill it's roll.

Nah, all mem is unified...ain't gonna be DDR3/4.

It isn't on the Pro:

"We felt games needed a little more memory — about 10 percent more — so we added a gigabyte of slow, conventional DRAM to the console," said Mark Cerny, lead system architect for the PS4, in a lengthy interview with Digital Foundry. The extra DRAM is different from the console’s existing 8 GB of GDDR5 graphics memory; it’s not meant to be used for games.

Cerny explained that the current PS4 uses part of its fast GDDR5 RAM for multitasking, keeping nongaming apps like Netflix in memory to allow for quick switching between a game and something else. That’s not the best use of the graphics RAM, which is why Sony added the slower DDR3 memory to the PS4 Pro.

I'm expecting the "big revelations" to be primarily software, since AMD has made it very, very clear multiple times that Zen SoCs aren't going to be available this year. Plus, pulling off backwards compatibility as well as they did indicates that their OS team is very, very good.

So, I'm going to guess the revelation is "proper" Windows 10, and subsequently Steam support.

The fact that Microsoft isn't doing a showy reveal (and, indeed, is giving the reveal job to the gaming press) indicates to me that they don't expect to be selling huge numbers of Scorpios, and that they will continue to consider the OG Xbone their primary format. Which mirrors Sony's position, and given how (not particularly) well the PS4 Pro sold in comparison to the Slim, it's probably a wise decision.

just my experience.

online mp population is alot better on console than pc
how many games are not optimized for pc? half the threads i see on gaf are about how shitty the ports are.

to be honest, i dont think msft cares. their more into people using their platform and controlling it
why do you think they are competing with steam. they figure they will get parts of both markets (pc and console)
