If Asians in general still like the movie how does that not prove how much of an overreaction the white washing issue has been.

I guess it is worth pointing out that the Asian Americans polled for their opinion on the film were the ones that chose to go in the first place. You have some self-selection going on there.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
yes, the fact that she's involved in projects that earn substantial amounts of money so she earns a high paycheck for subsequent films.

Conversations die when they become semantic debates...

Nonetheless, you're actually redefining "star power" as to "ScarJo gets paid".

Then yeah, every high profile star has "star power" in so far as they can bring in money, for themselves. But this doesn't explain what "star power" has to do with projected gross from a movie, which is the context in which this discussion is happening in the first place. People say, "ScarJo was cast because of her star power". By your definition, this translates to "ScarJo was cast because she gets paid".
If Asians in general still like the movie how does that not prove how much of an overreaction the white washing issue has been. That isn't to say they still should have done it. Of course an Asian lead would be nice. But to use that as the sole reason to just shit all over it is ridiculous.

PSA: ASIAN AMERICANS ARE NOT THE SAME GROUP OF PEOPLE AS MAINLANDER ASIANS. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT CULTURES, SOCIAL HISTORIES AND PRIORITIES.

The argument isn't being framed in terms of whether or not ScarJo inherently deserves her paycheck. She earned it regardless of the success of the film because that's how contracts work, duh.

The framing is whether or not the expenditure on big names provides consistent enough returns for the studio to justify the belief in the 'star power guarantees success' theorem. The prevailing evidence for many, many stars trends towards an answer of "No," and that the insane returns on hits that star her hinges on something else, like the brand attachment (marvel) or the quality of the entertainment (Lucy).

Hollywood execs are such fucking dumbasses. Why would you spend 250~300M in a Ghost in the Shell movie? Did nobody tell them that the original flick bombed too?

3N16MA's Liam joke is that all of those figures come from the Hunger Games, where he is basically supporting character eye candy. See this very serious review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyx1U9QjWVQ

Rip anime liveactions

At least Hollywood/high budget ones.

I'm glad they made GitS before this realization as they would never have pumped in so much money and I get to reap the results in form of the best depicting of a cyperpunk city.
CGI everywhere haha even the road markings were animated hologram.

Yep. Asian Americans have been vocal about white washing on several occasions but the only ones that are listened to seemingly are the ones who aren't "outraged"

For all the furor about "white-washing," the movie would have done even worse with an Asian actress instead of Johansson in the lead.

And for the record, I'm an Asian-American, and I think Johansson was a good choice for the role, and I would have gone to see the movie if the reviews hadn't been terrible.

and my first response was strictly countering someone saying she didn't earn her paycheck. sorry if others decided to go off the rails with it. I can't really control that.

Again, you didn't counter ANYTHING. You just said "you're wrong" and called it a day.

It also wouldn't have had as high of a budget if it didn't have Scarlet Johansson though.

holy shit, was her claim to fame really just marvel movies? and not even that relevant a character too?

wow

I remember her breaking out in Lost in Translation, seemingly disappearing for a long time from anything high profile, and then randomly exploding back into prominence in the Marvel movies.

Still not sure how that happened.

Really those numbers just mean that Asians DIDN'T like the movie at the same rate as everyone else. As a whole, no one liked the movie, because it bombed.

If you're going to keep digging that hole for yourself at least try digging up!

Too bad. Even if the movie sucked as an adaptation of the anime movie, it was at least spectacular visually.

What really sucked was not hearing Making of Cyborg until the goddamn credits.

maybe it'll end like Prometheus then. go back and watch and ignore the story.

I could see myself doing this since I have a free movie ticket.

So much hostility for a movie that was average at worst.

Good.

Stop being risk averse, make a good movie, and don't be afraid to cast and "unknown" as a lead.

Hopefully the Naruto movie learns this lesson.
Obviously this will make studios more risk averse. What other outcome is this likely to have, seriously?

She was a bit of an art-film darling for a while between Ghost World, Lost in Translation, The Girl with the Pearl Earring, and Love Song for Bobby Long. Then she had that period where she was in a bunch of Woody Allen films, and bombed her first big action role in The Island. There were a few more small budget films in there, The Prestige, and The Spirit (Bobby Roberts' favourite movie), before she started her Marvel contract.

While there are reports audiences aren’t offended by Johansson’s reverse casting because they’re used to watching western actors, foreign B.O. pundits put a total projection of $45M in China. Japan is a wild-card. Fate Of The Furious rolls out April 12, and that’s when Ghost‘s legs will truly be sawed off.

Damn. Sounds brutal.

If it was the same script and same director, yeah

This isn't a revelation

I honestly don't get why anyone wants a live action movie for anything like this. There's a reason something may succeed in a certain medium. I get financially why a studio might attempt it, but from a fan's point of view, why would you want it?

I know there's a live action JoJo movie coming but how would that work outside of manga and anime is beyond me. Just getting a great anime production of the manga is service enough.

the hostility is rightfully paired with the white-washing. I'm sure that provided a direct hit on it's reception as well.

Yeah I just looked up filmography again, I forgot how many movies she was in from the mid to late 2000s.

People look at comic book movies and hope anime/games can achieve a similar fate.

What people forget is beyond Marvel, who have the major backing of Disney, and The Dark Knight trilogy, a major outlier that was produced under a talented major director, comic book movies have also been trash.

I mean look around you. You're living in world dominated by super hero films. And my friends who grew up on comic books seem to be happier than pigs in shit. Lots of people want to see their favorite stories in world-class live action movies.

Not all of us anime fans are like "don't try, leave it as anime". I want them to try. Sometimes they'll mess it up, and sometimes they might do something spectacular with it. And maybe some of the best anime stories deserve to be shared with wider audiences. But with bombs like GITS I don't think you have to worry about the Hollywood ruining your anime for a long time...
