Mishima is the best and I'm a phanboy!

Nah, fuck him.

minor spoiler
I hate how desperate he was at some point just to hang out with me. He was like: I'll be mad if you don't show up

The thing is, they kind of address the whole thrown together nature of the P5 cast
Makoto used it to deduce MC/Ann/Ryuji/Yusuke were Phantom Thieves. Followed by Akechi and Sae doing the same thing with the larger group.

So in my mind, they're not supposed to feel like they have a certain closeness the way the P4 cast does. Which is intentional, sure, but is also why I prefer the group dynamics of the P4 cast more.

(P4 spoilers)
Naoto uses literally the exact logic you just described to deduce what the Investigation Team is up to (because it's formed largely from people who survived their sudden disappearances and who appeared on TV).

Edit: Redeemed, thank God.

Mishima haters, utter bastards of lust. We know how shitty you are, and that you put your twisted desires for worst characters, on this student that can't fight back. That's why we have decided to steal away those desires and make you confess your sins. This will be done tomorrow, so we hope you will be ready. From

The Phantom Thieves of Heart.

You call us bastards yet we give Mishima the gift of a second trip to the planetarium.

People who say the P3 cast isn't close...that's the entire point of the story. Their present lives and their pasts are completely fucked up, it's only natural that they're slow to open up to others. Throughout the whole game they start to let down barriers and get close to the other party members. By the end of The Answer you can tell that they've started to heal from their trauma and can finally look to a brighter future.

Yup. There's no reason every cast has to be all buddy-buddy ASAP or even at all.

I think it is good that the cast dynamic is a bit different between each game.

Basically this. Chasing a single dynamic would only lead to stagnation.

I think it is good that the cast dynamic is a bit different between each game. 4 really felt like a group of friends above all else, and that's part of what made that game really special.
In 3 the amount of history people shared was interesting and even though they start cold to each other by the end they are incredibly close with the last section of the game being pretty emotional as a result.
As for 5 the cast is essentially a group of outcasts that finds companionship in each other, which can be interesting. I think it would be beneficial to have at least a few scenes though that show people hanging out not revolving around the player. Like I shouldn't only ever run into one person at a time when I'm at the park with a confidant.

The most interesting thing about Persona 3 is that you start in a dorm, and that kicks off the thematic tone of being thrust into a pre-existing dynamic and not knowing if you can trust the people you are forced to live with. That extends to everything from the relationships to SEES. In fact if you think about it, physically you are more "together" with the party in P3 than in any other game, but yet they feel so "apart" at first. And it's also the only organization out of the 3 Hashino Personas where you aren't the founder of the team.

I keep telling myself that I'm going to play Persona 3 FES but I never do. Not being able to control your party just feels wrong.

Then again...if Atlus put it out on PS4 with trophies and uprendering...that might do it.

Damn, I haven't binged on a game this hard since Oblivion back in the day and that was after not gaming for years. I had a Futaba-esc meltdown today when I was getting interrupted by my family for all sorts of things during the 'big reveal' scene late in the game, lol.

Thinking about all the games too one thing that always bugs me is that your parents never even bother to send you at text to say, "hello" like it makes sense for one of the games but not the rest.

It sounds awful and yeah it is kinda dumb, but the game is designed around it so it's not unfair either. Plus it adds a different layer of strategy to the mix that makes boss battles very satisfying to beat.

Plus it's all around a good game, there really isn't any reason for everyone not to start with 3 instead of 4.

Ya messed up.

Edit: I mean, hanging out with Mishima sucks, but you would have gotten a cool scene with another character within it.

The problem with P5 is that once your team builds you are no longer really outcasts. So why would they spend time with idiots like Ryuji? I'd be like "ok see you next month when we have another target, don't fucking message me and try not to yell out that we are the phantom thieves in public for the tenth fucking time."

Would make for a much more interesting game if by choice you could just cut away the morons.

This is a really stupid complaint though. I mean, I think Ryuji is a moron too, he's a perv, and he is a loudmouth. But it's unreasonable to ignore the fact that when your character transferred in, you were a "delinquent with a record" no one wanted to talk to, and Ryuji was the first guy who opened up to you. You discovered the Metaverse together and beat Kamoshida together with Ann. Ryuji and Ann are also old friends. It honestly dosen't make any sense to tell the co-founders of the Phantom Thieves to "fuck off" in this context.

As far as actually spending time with Ryuji goes though, I haven't done it much. I'm at the end of Aug now, and his link is still at Rank 2 or something. I ignore most of his texts, but I don't think it's unusual that he comes over to hang out or whatever.

How does it not make sense to get rid of a moron? The whole game is literally constant variations of "do this or some massively bad shit happens". In that context you would tell him thanks, but no thanks. You don't just keep him around because he was there first, you certainly don't keep him around when he is a perv as well.

But then this is a group that has their "hideout" in an open walkway in a crowded area so maybe they do fit together... either way the choice would be nice.

The game is also about loyalty to the people who stuck by you, and that's one thing Ryuji never wavered on - sticking by the MC.

Except they're not going to rid of an asset, even if he messes up from time to time and more importantly, they're not going to dump him because he's a friend/comrade. Also the choice to "permanently tell a character that they wrote into the game to fuck off" makes 0 sense to me. This isn't Bioware, son.

I feel like they should have localized "hideout" into "hangout" instead, because that's what the animations look like, lol! You're just chilling with friends in a random location.

You can't do that in Bioware games either, mostly. You can tell some optional party members that you don't want to join... sometimes. And you can make decisions in some games which result in the demise or resignation of others. But even then, the games have the core original squad members who are with you at the start, and you can't ditch them!

Ryuji has his highs and lows, september being the absolute worst for him, but he improves a lot after that, he is still dumber than a rock but he shows more feelings and respect for you than others in the group. People loves makoto and Yusuke but the more you play the game the more you realize they dont give a f about you. They are all about the phantom thieves and you just happen to be their leader. Ann, Ryuji and Morgana are the only real bros in that group. And of that Only Morgana and Ryuji can be called real friends. The others are just team mates.

Imo Hifumi is the best romance (I know, didnt max Futaba, Fortune, Haru and Makoto yet) in Persona 5 and a really interesting character. I read she was planned as a char for the maincast/mainstory, but the game was already to long. Sad about that. Maybe we can get an extradungeon with her in a Goldenversion of P5

You're halfway, more or less.

Man... End of palace 7 spoilers
reading the usual Ryuji bashing after that cutscene is specially ironic. I hope he's okay :(

Edit: He's okay! Man, what a warrior.

And holy hell that boss was incredible, the best in modern Persona. So damn tough too on hard, I had to switch characters many times and care about SP a lot. I think I lost 4 times against the final phase, it's pretty much SMT final boss tier.

Is there any point hanging out with Sojiro? The social link never goes up. It's just stuck in 3 and I feel like I'm wasting my time just burning my evenings on it when I can rank up others 5 times faster.

Finished the game tonight. What a ride! It was great.

Feelin those empty Persona feels after you finish a big journey. Was really fun, will probably put some more thoughts together later. I find it difficult to rate all the games because I've enjoyed each one I've played (P2:IS, P3FES, P4, P5). I'd definitely say P5 is a worthy successor for the current vision of the series, and I look forward to them pushing onwards.

I got stuck there and gave up too. It took 3 fucking sessions before he would level from 2 and 3, and as much as I want to learn the art of curry, it's a huge waste of time. I hear that if you get the Fortune confidant up to lvl7 or something, you can use a reading to force closeness for a Confidant, so that might be a better late game strategy to deal with annoying ones like Sojiro.

He's soft locked until after the events of August, but the game doesn't tell you. You're also better off making coffee than hanging out with him directly, since that way you'll get some coffee

You really can't have been through November and Futaba's confidant link and think she's not down for you 100% no matter what. Yusuke also highly respects MC, certainly above the other teammates, and Makoto's personality really doesn't lend to trusting other people with important things..But she trusts you anyway. Haru is just there, but that's because they waited until 70% of the game was over to introduce her. In that sense, I like P5's dynamic a lot. They all have varying degrees of closeness with each other (Like
Ryuji and Yusuke barely ever interacting vs Ryuji and Futaba acknowledging each other more often, but Yusuke and Futaba always giving each other shit and Ryuji and Morgana always fighting among themselves )
Alternatively, Ann doesn't seem to care much about you outside of her confidant, which is weird, because she got the lovers Arcana, while
Makoto
becomes quite attached to MC quickly.

I've done at least 3 sessions with a persona of his kind in my group and the next session still isn't a rank up. Between party characters, hot maid teachers, or gaining guts and more medicine that leaves Sojiro way down the line on people I wanna hang with in the first place.

I always took Makoto as
just kind of being comfortable in the phantom's presence. She's not the kind of personality to really be super expressive imho, but you sense that silent bond of trust,
yknow

7th palace impressions

Lot's of things to say this time around.

The 7th dungeon was a textbook case of great on paper, but flawed in execution. It starts off incredibly strong, with its incredible visual design, excellent music and an impressive sense of scale. Infiltrating it gave me a rush I haven't felt since exploring Kamoshida's palace for the first time, and really I enjoyed the plot-related minibosses/moments scattered throughout. But eventually, the momentum stalled. Clearing the mouse trap the first time was fine, but then the game makes you repeat it again. And again. And Again. It's that 3rd time that really hurt the dungeon, and it's a major blemish in what was otherwise a good dungeon. Still, the dungeon manages to make up for the pace killer via the lead up towards the boss. Speaking of which...

The Goro ambush was the best / worst thing ever. Your first impulse when beating the Yakuza boss is immediately heading for the save point, but Goro stops you before it happens that fucking asshole. And man that confrontation is... equal parts hilarious, equal parts on the nose, equal parts exciting, equal parts cheesy and equal parts sad. The game peels away the last layer behind Goro's character, and we finally discover his motivation for everything. Like the individual members of the Phantom Thieves, he wants to get back at the shitty adult who wronged him, though, like with the various other Palace owners, his desire to do so twisted him beyond recognition. Goro is an incredibly interesting character (another Wild Card user WOAH), but he needed a bit more time to fully develop. In spite of this, he was still the emotional component that this dungeon needed since Shido is just a sociopath dickhead through and through.

Speaking of Shido, his boss fight was wild. Completely ridiculous and over the top, in the best way. My usual strategy of buffing myself to the max got stopped hard when he used Wage War, ultimately causing Joker to kill himself (rip). Fortunately, I was able to run it back by changing up my strategies for each phase. What I liked the most about this fight was that it basically demands the use of every party member. Keeping buffs up, keeping Shido debuffed, mitigating damage, removing status, keeping damage up... all factors that made the boss dynamic and exciting to fight. And man, the payoff to beating that boss was especially great. Not just because you finally got to put that asshole, but also...

Motherfucking RYUJI. Hate on him all you want, but the moment where he saves the day is undeniably amazing, and it completely solidified him as one of the best Persona characters for me. The perfect cap to the arc they set up from the beginning. "Just another Persona bro" my ass, the track ace is back and better than ever. The assbeating he got afterwards was completely 100% deserved though.

All in all, I came out feeling really great after the 7th palace. I know I'll inevitably have to fight (insert asshole surrogate for God), but this is probably the real highlight of the game for me.

I disagree. I'll put it in spoilers just in case, but nothing major here. Do mention all the characters though. Up to mid-October

Yusuke is aloof, sure, but underneath all that 'suffering artist' exterior he shows that he really cares about you and the Boss. There are moments where he shows great concern for you and your relationship with Shojiro and Futaba, and doesn't want you to be kicked out your home. Which makes sense with his arc. Same with Makoto. She's the 'nerd' type that's introduced and is poked fun at being emotionless to the point of being called a robot. But through her interactions with Futaba, she shows she really cares about you and the team as a whole.

I agree that Ann and Ryuji are much closer with you, being the original team from the beginning. And Morgana is #BestPet! I wish I had cat telling to go to bed. Would definitely help... I loved his arc too. Can't believe he got so much hate for quote unquote whining!

Also you forgot Futaba! She and Sojiro start to really feel like family after a while. Haru is the only weak link, but she feels like a much nicer Phan-girl so I didn't mind too much. Just wish she had a bigger presence.

And fuck Akechi. Only on October but the dude is gettin' my nerves.

More more, or more less?

I'm 52 hours after finishing the story stuff at the deadline after the 4th Palace.

More more.

I don't know how people beat the game at 90 hours. Then again I actively did the social links.

I finished at 110 hours and was kinda rushing the dialogue towards the end (I skipped reading the texts). This game beats DQVII (PS1) in terms of length.
