Gamestop: Nintendo Switch Selling out in hours not days (Mario Kart Launch info)

Gamestop stores across the country may have gotten new shipments of the Nintendo Switch in advance of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe release, but if you didn't already know that probably missed them. Nintendo's new hybrid living room/portable console started flying off of store shelves on day one, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. It's good news for Nintendo, a company that badly needed a win with its core console business after the tepid response to the Wii U and good news for the Nintendo fans that have managed to get their hands on one of the things.

"It's exceeding our expectations," he said. "We knew it would be a high demand product, but our Switch allocations are selling out not in days, but in hours...the demand is so high that consumers have to react quickly to be able to get their hands on them."

And while specific predictions about future supply or demand are tough to come by, nobody seems to be banking on supply stabilizing any time soon. At this point, demand still seems to be riding a launch window peak where machines are selling out immediately, at least for all intents and purposes.

"Right now we're not seeing sales going down at all, and I would expect that to continue for quite some time," said Bright

Good news for Nintendo. The Switch is pretty amazing. I hope they can manufacture enough to meet demand.

So does anyone want to start taking bets about how they manage to botch their next system? Seems to be a Tick-Tock Situation going back to the Gamecube. lol

They sell out pretty quick when our stores gets like 5 each. =P

They don't sell out quick when they put up $500 bundles. =/

As I said before, lack of stocks will impact MK8D performance, let's hope it'll be resolved soon enough.
Maybe for other console manufacturers that rely on day one purchases for profit, but an ever green title like MK8D is likely not going to be hampered by low Switch stock in the long term.

That's one way to look at it. Those who can't pick up a Switch might be inclined to buy an Xbox One S or PlayStation 4 slim bundle. Especially at a pushy retailer like GameStop.
The most insulting thing is that the free online honey moon will be over before it is easy to buy a Switch.

edit Oh yeah and the forced bundles. Maybe that is more insulting.

Just returned from Best Buy (picking up MK8) in an area with a bunch of possible stores to go to. Huge line for the switch. The demand is crazy.

Such great news.

It's selling like I thought it would sell if it was $250. Instead they're doing it at $300. Very, very impressive.

Yeah I was gonna ask. Without the shipment numbers this doesn't mean a lot if stores are getting only 5-10 every week

Pretty much every thing points to a large amounts of switch were shipped for this large, the largest since launch. You'll notice a lot of statements effect and a lot was shipped to paces like best buy where they have a promotion.

I'd wager the average consumer who really wants a Switch won't be swayed by the other platforms. Its USP is pretty major, especially when compared to the other two consoles.

It may have a slight impact early on, but this game will be selling well for years to come.

True, as this graph clearly shows.

I really hope 3rd parties are paying attention, and Nintendo is reaching out to them. This looks like the start of something huge, and the sooner everyone jumps all in the better.

Here's hoping for big announcements at E3!

Definitely this. People could get a PS4 or an X1 cheaper and with more available games already but they are after the Switch because it is different and has some great exclusives for all ages.

Switch sales are only going to get crazier from here. Now that Mario Kart is out in the wild, people will start bringing it to the office, to house parties, etc, and other people will see it and want their own. Who wouldn't? Pretty much irresistible.

It's pretty much like choosing a 3DS with TV out in comparison to them. It just so different in terms of what it does and it's software that it probably doesn't factor in as a comparison.

And that's how you cause a game console to go viral. Local multiplayer right out of the box on a portable console.

It's genius.

I expect close to 900k Switches sold for April again.

Just for NA or worldwide? I'd expect a bit less for NA and a bit more worldwide.

I'm happy with Nintendo success because the Switch really deserves the success imo. Nintendo made a great console that is very desirable among people instead of the shit show that was the Wii U.

Not only the console is sexy looking, it's portable and has popular games releasing, especially Mario Kart now.

But hopefully, they make more of them, especially for the holiday season, as i know a lot of people around my circle of friends who are still looking for one. They're still very hard to find.

This precise point has allowed the 3DS and PS4 to coexist for years with huge user bases and sales, while the Xbox One and Wii U were sort of left out of that boom. The Switch will naturally succeed the 3DS with enough time because it offers something different to the PS4 that's still enjoyable enough to warrant a second console purchase. Alternatively (and this is really a conversation for a different thread), the Xbox One kind of failed because it wasn't different enough to the better option (the PS4) and I doubt even Scorpio is going to change that.

Nintendo shipments are so fucked aren't they.

I'm glad I got my Neon already, but sad most of my friends won't be able to get their hands on a Switch unless they sleeplessly use trackers and alerts 24/7 or something. Gonna have to wait a little longer for local multiplayer parties :(

Great for Nintendo! In hindsight, now I can see releasing MK8 a month after lunch was a smart move, I criticized it hard since I firmly believed it had to be launch title, but Nintendo proved me wrong and this continues their launch window lineup growing steadily. Good for them!

Yep the word of mouth on multiplayer game sessions in the wild, at school, office, them parks, anywhere potential is huge. Not Wii levels, but definitely "surpasses XB1 YTD numbers in 2-3 years" level.

Once Smash 5 comes out, fucking run for your life.

That would be....insane. I doubt Nintendo shipped that many to NA this month.

They have been. Target, Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart and other have been getting sizeable consistent shipments in the last 4 weeks. The last week especially has seen huge shipments. In March, there was a huge three day supply at launch then it dried up for a good three weeks. Then it started ramping up again in the last week and we saw 900k units sold. April has been more consistent, so.

I'd say WW it'll be around that, possibly 1-1.1 mil. I can't see NA getting close to that number though.
April has seen a huge consistent supply coming online. They are just selling out the moment they land in retail stores.

Nintendo have a certified hit on their hands.

The key to continued momentum is the software support has to he there. They can't afford long droughts like we saw with the Wii U. Fortunately Nintendo seems 100% aware of that as the release slate for 2017 looks very good

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'd be pretty surprised. 900k units of hardware sold in the month of April would be absolutely nuts.

I'm really hoping you're right, because that's going to be an incredibly fun NPD thread if so.

Also, of course Switch sells out in stores in hours. It is the single most micro-managed console in the 10 years I've worked there. I'm talking hourly calls, emails, attach meters, hounding, and constant pressure to sell these things every time they appear.

Why this is...well, I don't have to say much more. It's pretty obvious. =P

(One big thing is that it is pretty much the ONLY sales driver for video games for the summer. It's dry bones people.)
