Samsung Galaxy S8 · S8+ |OT| - Available April 21, 2017

What's this about? Is this why we don't get the Exynos in the US?

Pretty much. Qualcomm owns a bunch of patents so companies like Apple and Samsung have to pay royalties to license CDMA radios to use on Verizon and sprint.

It's cheaper for them to use snapdragon I think.

Performance isn't the issue for me though, but mostly memory management. Any game I have will basically reload at any app switch lol. 4gb ram my asshole. Seems to be a common trait with samsung phones regardless of processor.

i've found battery life on the S8 to be pretty great, i'm 8 hours off charge and looking at 60% atm .. for me thats really good. bit improvement over my S7E

question ..does anyone bother with widgets these days?i have dashclock and that's it ... and that is just for quick glance access to current wifi AP and alarm

I use the Outlook Calender, BBC news and a minimal weather widget.

One month in, still really liking this phone. The way the black monolith moves into life is pure sex. It feels like a genuine generational leap too. Going from Samsung G56whatever to Galaxy S2 was a huge jump. Going from Galaxy S2 to HTC M7 was a huge jump. Going from HTC M7 to Galaxy S6 was a big fat meh. It was rationally better but also unremarkable. Smartphones seem to have hit their peak. Going from S6 to S8 though, whoosh. I held my S6 the other day. Clunky. Like mobile phones from the nineties.

Also need to commend Samsung on how it's all smooth rounded glass, but not at all slippery. My S6 was already pretty battered a month in, as it slipped out of my hand or pocket all the time. But the S8 has some perfect weight going on in the way that it stays securely in my wide chino pockets, and doesn't slide in my hand at all.

Actually phones is quicker outside of demo mode, but it's way slower than op3t and pixel for sure.

Yeah I know that, I just forgot the expression 'demo mode'. Anyway, my gf has an A5 that is very slow in demo mode, she got it and it was surprisingly fast out of the box. That only lasted a few weeks, now it is as slow as when it was running demo mode, except now it isnt.

Any gaffer own the Exynos model? Hear it's a bit better than the SD model. That's the only thing stopping Samsung from directly competing with Apple for best phone maker. Similar experience across all models. It also would simplify updates, repairs, support. Truly optimize their flagship phone with their flagship SoC, just like Apple does.
Running an Exynos model here and no issues. I did find this interesting;
The Hardware Lottery Continues: Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ Varies Between UFS 2.0 and UFS 2.1

Apparently, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ could feature either UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1 for the storage. Promotional material from Samsung early on boasted of UFS 2.1 for its storage, but eagle-eyed XDA Senior Member lch920619x spotted the silent removal of mentions of UFS 2.1 for storage on Samsung’s official webpage for the devices.

More info here.

I'm running an S8+ Exynos variant featuring UFS 2.1.

Is it healthy for the battery to use the fast charger daily?

I remember when fast charging first came out there was reports of it degrading the battery a lot quicker, is this still the case?

Galaxsy s7 should be an indicator. I think tests showed that compared to the s6 the s7 lost less capacity to battery.

Yes, it was discussed a few pages ago.

Basically its only if you have a SD835 S8.

S8+ and Exynos variants don't have that issue.

From what I've read I wouldn't imagine there would a real noticeable difference in day to day use anyway.

Probably a bit because it heats it up more. But Samsung said they've improved battery tech so yearly degeneration should be drastically lower... Can't hurt to have a normal charger for charging over night. Fast charger for mid day when you need to top off quickly.

okay, so i went on the official samsung promotion website to check the status... Here is the last thing:

We expect your gift to ship between 4/25/2017 and 5/2/2017. Please check back often as shipping dates may change.

ahem ... its the 9th now and it hasnt shipped yet lol

Going from an S4 to an S8... this is quite the sexy phone upgrade. :O

Not sure how I feel about the edge features, I turned all that kind of stuff off.

Any recommended things you guys do off the bat to increase performance/experience with the s8+.
Not noticing any difference tweaking with package disabler. Best keep everything on for stability.

Turning it to 720p is the most notable performance increase lmao.

Had a weird scare today. Phone was dead. No charging, no power, couldn't do anything. Held power button for like 2 minutes and nothing. Was on my way to t-mobile when I randomly thought Hey try holding power and volume down. Booted right up then had a starting Android screen for like 2 seconds and everything was fine.

Still a little scary.

Netflix in VR.

I'll keep the Gear VR just for that.

I'm using my Astro A38s instead of the AKG Y50s though.

Honestly it should be fine as is.

Android's biggest problem still is FB/FB Messenger and random app battery drain/performance issues.

I haven't used Facebook in years. Had to use messenger for a group thing sort of recently, but it wasn't as bad as I remember.

I disabled Verizon Location Assistant which has helped me on my network.

So I got my s8+ today. Jumped from a Nexus 5, and I cant help but think the screen is much less sharp? There's this blur around text that isnt there on my Nexus 5 screen. Its in 1080p mode as well.

What are the recommended power ratings for chargers? Is there a minimum voltage and amp rating to not damage the battery and/or reduce its lifespan?

Does anyone have a widget that combines media player playback?

I want to control PocketCast and Spotify, basically whichever is active, with the same widget. It is apparently possible with something called Zooper, but I downloaded it and whenever I add a media player widget and try to press play the sound just pauses and plays infinitely and I have to restart my phone.

Considering picking up a slimmer case. My current neo-hybrid is great in the sense it is protected reasonably well but god... every time I use the S8 at work that is caseless it leaves me feeling jealous. It's too good to hold.

I think spigen rugged armor is the best case there is for any phone in terms of protection and slimness. Not a huge fan of the carbon fiber stickers.

Can the on screen buttons in the Samsung browser be disabled permanently? I can't even consider trying it while they pop up every time I scroll back up a page, it drives me mad.

Rugged armour is ruined for me by those carbon fiber parts, looks tacky imo.
