Hopefully it turns out good, I would really love a good new 2D/2.5D Metroid game.

It's too bad there isn't a Switch version as well, playing it on the 3DS is going to make my eyes bleed from the jaggies.

one of the first things they pointed out in the treehouse thing about it is that it's optional

...Well, then I suppose most game mechanics are optional, really.

Devil Trigger in DMC is optional, God Hand abilities in God Hand, Mushrooms in Mario, Abilities in Kirby, it's all really just optional.

Catching up on the Treehouse stream and it looks pretty good.
Yeah I was a bit bummed after seeing the trailer and seeing Mercury Steam attached, but the gameplay looks really slick.

Not sure about the pulse thing, but that's certainly an alternative to shooting walls all the time or them slapping waypoints down and forcing you to see them like they did in Fusion and Zero Mission. I think the range is too big and it shouldn't be permanent though.

edit: Also not a fan of the melee counters on bosses, cutscenes look a bit too long and repetitive.

Really happy to be getting this in just a few months.

Next 2D Metroid as a budget Switch title in 2-3 years. Metroid V. Believe.

Except that title would probably be really confusing after Metroid Prime 4.

That's a pretty big ask. Resources are finite. And there are still a metric shit ton of 3DS' out in the wild, so it does make some fiscal sense for Nintendo to throw that audience a bone with what, relatively speaking, is a lower budget title than what would be required on Switch.

Releasing games on dying/dead platforms has generally not worked out for Nintendo though. I feel like releasing something on the hot new platform is a better shot at actual success.

Oh lord, it's as I feared: They're turning this into a straight-up spectacle action game! We even have super moves now.

Oh god in particular at that one 'Aeion ability'. Unless they're adding in randomly generated levels, radar-ing a 10x10 square on the map is going to trivialize a lot of the exploration and discovery aspect of the game.
Are you familiar with the X-Ray Visor from Super Metroid?

3DS is far from dead and not dying. It will be sold as a very cheap entry handheld for at least another 1 1/2 years

Being a bit negative here but I don't like the graphical style at all. It's that odd mixture of bad 3D graphics thrown into a 2D type game. There's something off about the tone, color and brightness as well.

I'll give it a try but I would have been much happier with a 2D game in the same vein as Fusion and Zero but with the production values of a Super Metroid.

The 3DS is still Nintendo's main source of revenue and probably will continue to be for quite a while.

The game feels fantastic.
As I mentioned before, I did not want to stop playing. The game plays smoothly, the new counter mechanic feels great, and the ability to to scan the environment will hopefully help reduce those moments where you are exploring aimlessly without clear direction.

Honestly looks like garbage. Don't know why Nintendo could't focus on classic Metroid style look but making it timeless. I can play Mega Man X today and still love it. The 3d PSP remake looks like absolute garbage by comparison. This will age badly.

Maybe they wantes 3D metroid to lead into Metroid Prime 4 designs. But I mean I don't know why they couldn't utilize Zero Mission, Fusion, AM2R etc. Whatever. Just happy more Metroid was announced.

Treehouse Log on the game and Metroid in general

https://nintendotreehouse.tumblr.com/post/161796687927/up-close-and-personal-with-samus-aran

I won’t lie—this seemed like sacrilege. I’ve certainly fought thousands of matches as Samus in the Super Smash Bros. series over the years, so I’m no stranger to slapping people around with my arm cannon, but this was a traditional Metroid game—you don’t smack things. You line them up from a distance and shoot them before they can ram into you or shoot you. But the challenge with this game is that everything is too fast for that to be your only strategy. Enemies spot you from a ways off, and they can close the gap in milliseconds. All of a sudden I was settling into a different groove—blasting far-off enemies with the muscle memory of a thousand Metroid hours, then experiencing the visceral payoff of deflecting some alien’s bull rush with a well-timed uppercut and then vaporizing it in a single, screen-rattling shot in the downbeat after the strike. I was in love all over again, and with a different game.

I love how the counter works in the game. It solves the problem of not having an answer to enemy attacks while in stationary aiming. It is also a way to implement cool cinematic takedowns in a way that is probably more natural than Other M's.

If a developer like Double Helix can make a decent Strider game, then I could believe that MercuryStream can do a good Metroid game in this life.

I don't know why I thought it was outsourced? But in any case, I think Nintendo will have a tight quality control input over this one.
It's a reasonable assumption that Grezzo would have been involved since they worked on every other 3DS Zelda, but it turns out they didn't work on it.

Thirteen and a half years.

How did it get to that point?

Did you know? Sakamoto's original vision for Other M was actually was going to be a classic 2.5D Metroid game, much like this game.

Problem is, Team Ninja wanted to make a 3D character action game like Ninja Gaiden.

Team Ninja stepped in to work on the project and was selected because the team played off the Nintendo-based team extremely well, bouncing ideas back and forth throughout the development. Sakamoto used a specific instance as an example: he insisted that the game would be an on-rails side-scrolling adventure that used the Wii remote exclusively like an NES/Famicom controller. But Team Ninja really wanted to make it a nunchuk-analog controlling game for 3D foreground/background exploration. Sakamoto stood firm on the Wii remote exclusivity. When the Team Ninja came up with an idea that could incorporate Sakamoto's Wii remote focus into a non-on-rails design, he was skeptical -- but when he finally saw what they came up with, he thought the solution was perfect. They called it "Famicom Game Plus."

Explains the sideways Wiimote control scheme, doesn't it?

Whenever people would say "Metroid + Dark Souls", I'd always say that it's the parry I want most, because the combat in both 2d and 3d Metroid was always too simple. Couldn't be happier that someone had the same idea. The actual combat gameplay looks an order of magnitude better than other 2d Metroid games.

The free aim also reminds me a lot of Shadow Complex. Taking notes from some good games here.

Watched more of it from the Treehouse presentation and I guess I finally dig it, won't be able to get a 3DS till next year so I'll have to wait, but I'm getting this for sure. I need to support Metroid if I want to see more of it!

Yeah, I remember that. I actually mostly liked Other M, gameplay wise. I always thought it would've been nice to see it used in a more isolated/non-linear Metroid game (sort of like how they made Zero Mission after Fusion).

I think I'm most thrilled that this will be out so soon. September! And not a peep about it either, just an old rumor that wasn't even accurate.
