Which is a better choice: PSVR or Nintendo Switch?

If you don't think the PS4 has enough games to keep you busy right now, get a Switch.

If you have enough games and are okay with the lineup for the future then invest in a PSVR, so you can experience a completely different way to play.

Everytime I feel like I want a switch, I realize I won't even have the time to play it. I'm barely into Persona 5, still going through Horizon, Pre-ordered Crash, just started injustice 2 etc. I have no desire to drop all of those and jump into Zelda right now.

Once Mario +Rabbids comes out I'm gonna think about buying a switch again, but I'll probably be stuck in the same situation where I'll have too many fall games that I'm playing.

Meanwhile for PSVR, it's a good break after playing core games. You don't have to invest as much time per session and it has more relaxing games. Eagle Flight for example is great for a quick race or just fly around the city for a while. The games feel more different and unique overall.

So I would say it depends on how you feel about the PS4 lineup. If you're overloaded with games, paying $299 to play even more of the same games seems redundant. I would rather invest in a new experience. If you're looking at the Ps4 lineup and aren't interested in a bunch and want more core games to play, get a Switch.

For me a big negative of VR is the isolating aspect of it. Switch offers a lot of different ways to travel and interact with it and other people around you. With no kids this may be a smaller value proposition to you unless your wife would also enjoy it. Switch has opened a lot of doors for me though and I take it around whereas I never even really took my 3DS out of the house. Being able to pop off the cons for local multi is a fantastic experience and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys local multi even a little.

To me this is more of a question between what type of gaming you enjoy. Your second post seems to lean towards more solitary experiences so PSVR might be your true choice.

I agree with you.

Honestly having played a bunch of PSVR titles and other VR titles I am really not impressed. It is a cool experience but the games are pretty shit. The only thing I have really enjoyed and would want to spend time playing is Thumper and it is awesome without VR anyway.

The last two VR games I played were Farpoint and Mortal Blitz and both were just, eh. For me. The feedback and the way weapons fired felt really terrible.

It sucks I was very excited for VR but damn near everything I have tried so far has been a cool 15 minute thing that I never want to play again. Switch will almost definitely end up with better software over time.

Sorry but that sentance and Farpoint do not belong together. R7,Farpoint,Star Trek with friends are far from 15min things. Its usually the stuff people say who haven't even tried VR.

Horror games are unmatched when it comes to VR, The inpatient will be incredible, But it looks like it will need the Pro to get the best out of it.

In terms of pure games variety, I think the Switch+PS4 combo will give you a lot more mileage than PS4+PSVR.

The question is whether or not you value the experience of VR over the game variety of having the Switch+PS4 combo, since most VR games are playable without VR.

While I don't personally have either one, I have tried both and will be getting a Switch at the end of the year when Mario comes out (huge assumption that I can find one). PSVR is great and entertaining, but I can't see myself getting my money's worth out of it. Maybe future iterations will be more attractive.

Honestly I just don't think the library of PSVR can compare to the future of Switch. Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Splatoon and Xenoblade just outweighs what I've seen on PSVR by a lot (I guess ARMS too, but I didn't really enjoy what little I played. Then again, I'm not big on fighting games either.).

I don't know what to say. Farpoint just didn't play well to me. Neither did Mortal Blitz. It just lacked the kind of 'oomph' I want from a FPS.

I haven't tried RE7 in VR so maybe that is different. Like I said, for me everything so far has been a cool thing for a while but ultimately mediocre and not something I would want to invest much time in.

I would buy Switch over PSVR.

Switch is comfortable; is a system that is designed to be, whatever you want it to be. If you prefer gaming anywhere, simply undock it. If you prefer console style gaming, dock it. I think the overall library will be solid.

PSVR is something else; it's fucking magical - but then becomes novel. You return to it later and it's magical again. I love the concept, but I battle motion sickness and always have (I cannot read in a car). Therefore, PSVR isn't as valuable to me, since I can not play it often as comfortably as I can other things.

That and PSVR library doesn't much excite me.

What's more important to you:
  • Nintendo game design and portability: then Switch
  • Immersion: then PSVR

For me this is a no-brainer: PSVR, utterly awesome, love it to bits. But some people don't; they don't experience it the same way I do; its very subjective. So anyone considering a VR purchase should try it out for themselves first. And if you are not 100% sold then you should pass, and see what the next gen VR has to offer.

I have both, and a PS4 Pro, and I would definitely say Switch. I am really excited about Skyrim in VR, though, so I know I will put many more hours of use into my PSVR when it comes out. However, I have already spent more time gaming in the last few months on the Switch than in probably the last year or two combined just due to the portability.

Also, I am excited about Skyrim for the Switch as well. Almost everyone I know who bought a Switch thought that they'd play it mostly docked, (including myself) however I have found I play it undocked probably 85% of the time. That 85% is time I used to never be gaming prior, and the 15% was split between PC, PS4, and Xbox before.

When I sit down to play it is usually PC with PS4 exclusives sprinkled in when they come out. All that said, the main reason above all, is that it is really hard for me to wear the PSVR headset for more than an hour at a time. My living room is too big to wear it on my couch, meaning watching movies is simply out of the question unless I want to move all kinds of stuff around, which is obviously a huge pain.

The thing about the Switch is that you can just pick it up and play instantly for a few minutes here and there. In the time it takes you to grab a PS4 controller, boot up the system, apply whatever random update is waiting, (sometimes) and get into a game, I could have already been playing the Switch for a few minutes. It all adds up. And that is just for the regular PS4. Getting set up to play VR is a commitment.

Anyway, I think the PSVR is awesome and definitely recommend you get one - but I would recommend you get a Switch first.

Switch it's not even a contest if you don't have enough money for both.

Let VR grow or die over a few years and then splurge if you don't have the disposal income.

Switch if you are only able to purchase one. But if you plan on purchasing one now and the other at a later date, go with PS VR. The switch has one, maybe two games worth buying for it at the moment (the rest you can get on other devices), it's not off to a great start. Of course that will hopefully change later

Having been following the PSVR thread pretty much from the start, I'm pretty sure noone paid $400 for the Star Trek game. Completely ridiculous statement to make.

My mistake, it was the STBC review thread where someone said it sold a Viva and another said it convinced him to buy in. So not that ridiculous.
I believe it's just nonsense to buy any console for just one game, even with the prospective to have more on the "near" future, usually people should be more patient and wait for discounts (I know on the N side the word discounts is nearly non existent...)

BUT if someone love Zelda, why not let him buy an expensive switch to play it now without waiting for more good games coming later (many months later)?

If someone LOVE star trek, why not let him buy the PSVR to enjoy a VR amazing experience with already available another good choice of titles for it?

Everyone should spend their money on what make them enteretained and happy, if the can.

Yep. Buying hardware on the promise of future titles seems more crazy to me. Sitting and waiting until there is a title that makes it too hard to resist, which for some might well have been STBC, seems perfectly understandable. And Switch was lucky to launch with a title that many are unable to resist in Zelda.

Have you played PSVR yet?

I did, there was a demo at a BestBuy near me. I was underwhelmed.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best video game I've ever played in my life. Although I did play it on Wii U lol. Mario Odyssey looks brilliant. Next year, Metroid 4 is coming. Pokemon is coming.

I haven't seen a single game on PSVR that looks interesting.

I have a PS4 Pro and a Wii U under my TV at the moment. I could buy the Switch and PSVR, but I have neither. I'll buy a Switch when I'm sure they're not about to release a more durable (or non-portable) SKU or my Wii + Wii U backlog runs out. I sincerely doubt I'll ever buy PSVR. Maybe if it's on clearance for like $99 a few years from now, I would like to try Skyrim in VR.

Personally as much as I hate saying this, I would choose the Switch over PS VR. I'm not a huge fan over VR and the games for PS VR doesn't scream "must own" or "must experience". Plus who knows if down the line Sony would say "fuck it, VR isn't doing well with us. Let's ultimately forget about it."

Switch has some nice games out that I have been enjoying on it like Mario Kart 8 DX and Arms. Plus Splatoon 2 is next month and I'm definitely a fan of Splatoon. Just look at the library of each platform and see if any of them are must own.

PSVR has more potential to be fun. The new experience is definitely worth it. But it needs more support.

Even though it's in its early stages, some of the experiences I had with it (Mostly farpoint) are just something else. It's an entirely new form of playing.

That is psvr's strength, it provides a new type of experience. Comparing it to a traditional console doesn't work.

If you need a timsink for the bus, or while shitting, or half watching Netflix, or just whiling away chunks of your life, then go traditional, because that is where you will be able to dump thousands of hours.

If you want to experience immersion (which truly is different from any prior gaming experience) and want to get the joy out of seeing others experience vr for the first time (which is so fun to see) before vr becomes commonplace, and you don't need/want a timesink, then vr. Vr is a thing for hundreds of hours, not thousands.

Um...you have a PS4, right OP? If so, PS VR isn't a waste of money; you will get access to games exclusive to the platform. However, I would highly recommend getting a Switch over PS VR. I say this, as you get more out of a new console than an add-on (even if the add-on is reportedly game-changing for those with positive experiences with it).

Nintendo's Switch gives you portable versions of BOTW, Mario Kart 8 and a number of original experiences (and I would bet good money Mario Odyssey will be worth the full Switch price once it releases this fall). But PS VR has it's benefits.

  1. Act's as a make-shift Screen if you have no HD TV
  2. Some games and 'Experiences' are quite strong
  3. It's better with PS4 Pro (Good Thing if you have the upgraded system)
  4. Sony and Third Parties are (shockingly to be honest) supporting it with many games in 2017 & Beyond

Own both, but if I had to choose between them, I'd pick the Switch. Why? It's just more versatile. Also, BotW is better than any game on PSVR (or any VR platform for that matter).

Switch.

PSVR is neat, but you have a lot more interesting content coming to Switch and it will be better supported than the PSVR.

Hmm. Tough one. They are so very different.

Not really getting the support thing.

PSVR has tons of stuff to play, whereas Switch has hardly any games at the moment, relying on old Neo-Geo games to bulk up what is a very poor launch line-up.

I use my Switch more, day to day. But PSVR is not meant to be something you use very often. it;s a specialist thing I'll use for a smaller number of games.

In terms of excitement, I was way more excited by PSVR and my friends are always clamouring to play it. The initial flush of excitement has faded though and it;s something i know I won;t use for sometimes over 2 weeks at a time. That said, as experiences go, PSVR is fantastic and I'd recommend it to anyone. Even if you only own it for 3 months, you can sell it on for almost no loss.

Actually, here is what I'd do: buy psvr and use until oct. if you love it keep it. if not eBay it, people get at least 2/3s of what it costs new when selling. Then get a Switch. Or vice versa. Best of both worlds and you'll only be out of pocket $100. Or if you go Switch first, you might make money.

Good cases can be made for either. Last year I had the choice of getting PSVR or saving that money for the Switch launch, and I chose PSVR because that's where my heart was at, and I do not regret my purchase. I wanted to get VR in my house ASAP for a reasonable price, and I'm a huge Resident Evil fan who is crazy over the idea of VR horror. But doing so means missing out on all the Zelda craziness and Mario in October.

So yeah, it was a good gut decision, but it's up to you what means more to you. This is a good general rule for all gaming; don't listen to what everyone's telling you to do and go from your heart.

I've slowly warmed to my PSVR again after the initial honeymoon period, but this is such an easy choice still. Switch is better. However, I'd add, that I don't think either of them are worth their current asking price if you're so on the fence. Wait it out.

You have a standard PS4. I think it would be better with the Pro.

That said, its easier to get right now than a Switch. (Unless you dont mind the bundles.) And has probably has more games you may like right now.

Then you have gaming on a Switch vs gaming with VR.

Kind of a tough call on this one.

Great advice.

People say VR is all about immersion, but I found Breath of the Wild far more immersive than any current VR title. I wouldn't even consider buying into VR at this point, unless you have a lot of disposable income.

Presence, actually. The tech tricks your brain into believing you are actually in the game world, and is not like regular gaming.

In my case I'd be more likely to go with Switch (hoping there's some way to play the Metroid 2 Remake on it later as I don't have a 3DS) rather than a PSVR because for VR I'm more interested in one of the PC centric solutions.

I saw a guy playing a Switch in the airport yesterday and the handheld form factor looks perfect (which would be my main use case rather than docked console use).

No one can tell you which you'd use and enjoy more.

It was Switch for me, but I love Nintendo first party games (at least some of them anyway) and just don't have any real interest in current VR content (or the mess of wires involved etc.). I also don't really have the luxury of having chunks of time to be totally immersed with a VR headset and headphones having old dogs with health issues that whine to go out frequently, as well as often needing to be able to get to my phone quickly for work calls/emails. Not being able to get fully immersed kills a lot of the VR experience to me.

I'm owner of both a PSVR and Switch. I love both products, but if I had to choose, I'd go with a Switch.

Switch will end up having more games which are much deeper experiences. You can play with many friends, you can play for hours no sweat and take it on the go.

PSVR you'll be essentially stuck sitting down in front of your tv and the offerings for multiplayer are still rather limited.

Well one is an add on and the other is a full fledged gaming system that offers better games that you can't get elsewhere and is cheaper to boot. VR is pretty cool and it has potential but I'd wait for the tech to get cheaper and for some truly worthwhile VR experiences to justify its price tag. The Switch, while still new and thus currently lacking in games, will build up a better library far faster than any add on could and arguably already has better games

It's ... sort of an odd question? You're comparing a peripheral to a full console.

I'm a big fan of VR, and I'm also a an owner of a PSVR and a Switch.

If I had neither, and I was going to buy only one, I'd buy the Switch. The Switch is cheaper, and it's completely stand-alone (you don't need a TV!). PSVR has some really great games but the level of effort to get it running is much, much higher.

Definitely try whichever one you don't buy. In the long run I'm very happy that I have both.

I personally feel VR is a more distinct experience, because it offers a new way of experiencing games. The Switch, however, does seem to be an ace handheld and solid console, with the promise of a good early library. In terms of classic game experiences with modern twists, I'd go for the Switch. In terms experiencing games differently, I'd go for PSVR.

If you had to choose, I'd say go for the Switch. You'll definitely get more use out of it and the VR tech is still evolving.

This is someone who enjoys their Switch and is happy being an early adopter of VR.

As a PlayStation 4 owner who has neither...

Switch. The game selection is far better already and will only continue to get better than PS VR's. I also feel the portable aspect is better than VR's novelty.

I haven't fully read the thread and I can't tell you OP about PSVR at all, but I can tell you that the hardware problems associated with the Switch are massively overblown.

The dock will not scratch the screen ever unless the dock is damaged, the wifi issue has reportedly been fixed in the most recent update, and the build quality of the main unit is excellent- I've dropped it twice from about 3-4 feet onto hard tile floor and it's been fine. I've also scratched off smudges from the screen with my fingernail and it didn't scratch the screen. The plastic screen is there for durability, which it does really well.

The only legitimate hardware problem seems to have been the left joycon connection issue, and that should be fixed if you buy a newer unit, but I don't think there's a guarantee of that.

Switch, VR is more like a Tech demo (3-4 hour games) and soon alot of ports of old games.

Zelda, Xenoblade, Arms, Mario Rabbids, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Metroid Prime 4, Splatoon and more 2 vs hmmmm Farpoint, RE 7, Skyrim VR, Fallout VR, allot of tech demo like short games, rush of blood.

Unless VR starts getting Major AAA games like RE 7 day one like normal players why even bother?

Wait till ps vr 2 or till it takes off VR is still niche sadly.

OP has stated he doesn't like multiplayer and since Nintendo will start charging for online like everyone else, he'll probably take the same stance as to why pay for something if he doesn't like it( and others are much better at the game than him anyway). He just enjoys singleplayer.

And then Metroid Prime 4 is incredibly far away( hence why they just had a picture of the title -_-) so not fair to even put that in your list of suggestions. And Arms/Splatoon are pretty much out since he doesn't like multiplayer. He doesn't like Zelda much either.

So that leaves Mario Rabbids , Oddysey, Xenoblade 2 thats in the near future vs Farpoint, SkyrimVR, FarpointVR, RE7 and your "bunch of tech demos" that are already out and ready to play. (Please notice the sarcastic quotation marks)

Make a list with 10 games released/announced and see wich one can fully complete this.
At the moment? I would say neither of them.
Wait for Black Friday/Holiday deals grab a PSVR and buy a Switch later in 2018.

Seriously? This is indication that you haven't even bothered to research/follow PSVR's journey so far.

I own both, and I say Switch by a mile.

Switch has gotten 20x more playtime than my PSVR in a much shorter time.

PSVR is still cumbersome to use. It's awesome honestly can be an obstacle to playing games I want to.

thumper in VR was like a game redefining experience for me. i can't imagine anyone wanting to play it on the switch after playing in VR

I agree, but that isn't what was said. Thumper was fantastic in PSVR, but it wasn't a "so good I'll never touch the Switch again" moment like the quote I responded to.

It's not about "one game". It's about how VR can elevate games to a level way beyond what's possible on a traditional display.

I also agree with this. However, PSVR is a mess to setup. It's a huge hassle. Takes up a ton of space, plenty of wires and an extra box. Once VR goes wireless and not as bulky, it will be the preferred experience. At this point, though? Not even close. Switch is compact, easy to pick up and play, and already has a quality library that will get better. Plus, it's cheaper. It's the better choice at this point.
