I give it a 7 out of Ten...

It is silly and I do not necessarily think it is great. But it is totally a 7 out of 10...

Great film! It turns into a horror film near the end, in a way. Yeesh.

My rankings of his movies from best to not my favorite (I like all of his films):

Memories Of Murder
Mother
Okja
Snowpiercer
The Host

I've never seen Barking Dogs Never Bite. I should remedy that this weekend.

Dragged at times but I really enjoyed it overall. I will admit to tearing up at the end, but that might have been affected by mood from other factors in my life too lol. Not quite Snowpiercer level for me tho.

My rankings would be...

Memories of Murder
Mother
Okja
The Host
Snowpiercer

and even tho snowpiercer is last...it's still better than alot of movies period.

Great movie but man that was hard to watch lol. Like from beginning to end super hard to watch. Loved it all the same.

Is the action as good as the reviews said? I wasn't expecting any kind of decent action here, but quite a few reviews were praising the action as well done

Its not your typical action movie but the "action" scenes are really good. Its alot more lighthearted than you might think with the "action".

Love the "were totally not Terorrists" and "this isnt a lethal choke hold"

An amazing film. Fell in love with Mija and Okja's relationship. It was something out of Studio Ghibli.

Definitely left feeling that I wanted to see more from this South Korean director.

It was pretty good.

Lots of really fucked up scenes but the baby one was the worst. At least that lil' guy got a happy ending.

This was absolutely wonderful, a brilliant and emotional farce / fairytale. Also one of the most visually stunning movies I've seen in a while.

It took a little while to find its footing, and I had trouble reconciling some of the performances (Gyllenhaal and Swinton) with the rest of the film at first. But as usual, Bong Joon Ho is a master at changing the tone of his movie from scene to scene. The 60s comic-book villains, the peace-loving terrorists, the John McLane teenage girl (fantastic young actress), the horror and drama of the later scenes, it all blended together perfectly in the end.

Maybe not up there with Memories of Murder and The Host but I thought it was better than Snowpiercer. My film of the year so far.

5/5

Watched it last night and I enjoyed it. Had some weird messaging but I thought the relationship between Okja and Mija was lovely and I liked the ALF crew.

I LOVE Bong Joon Ho's work but I'm so strung out and having a really rough trip back home with a lot of pressure and family drama...so I'm not exactly in the mood for a sad/disturbing/emotionally turbulent film.

How devastating is the ending?

The movie has rough moments for sure.
Just vague spoilers:
I cried a little bit but the ending is bittersweet, not as dark as his other films.
HUGE SPOILERS if you actually want to know for sure:
Okja doesn't die.

It's not that devastating. Not in the wrong way anyway. It gets a bit emotional in the end though. It's one of my favorite movies of the year. It's so damned good.

I'm surprised people aren't more into it. It's a better and less flawed movie than Snowpiercer, which I love, and have seen like 3-4 times.

It's getting a cinema run here in London. Even though I saw it on Netflix I might catch it once more on the big screen. I think it'd be cool to see once more, but it might be a bit soon. I just saw it! I think time will be kind to this and people will slowly discover it. Netflix should keep this partnership going, its their best one.

Great movie. Love the utter weirdness mixed with the heartfelt story, which I guess is by now a trademark of Bong Joon Ho

Okja is a striking parable, telling a magical story through horrific satire. Both elements work perfectly, as the bond between Mija and Okja is undeniable and both are utterly lovable in their own misfit-y way. Ahn is a spectacular lead, and the rest of the cast varies from joyously hammy (no pun intended) and uniquely charming. Besides Ahn, the clear stand-out is Dano, whose kind terrorist makes him a rare one to root for, besides the girl and her super-pig.

The scenes of the food industry are difficult to watch in a very good sense; the cruelty is utterly terrifying and biting in the best sense. We might not have super-pigs, but our world certainly has food production similar to the atrocious methods used in this. Jung's score is whimsical and Khondji's cinematography frequently astonishes through the various locales the story takes us.

However, it all comes back to Mija and Okja, and how their bond cannot be broken. Despite all the horrors Bong throws at them, it's clear he loves the two characters as much as audiences will. The heart-pounding and heartwrenching ending that he gives them is satisfactory and the film's best element, despite several other great qualities. Okja is a remarkably well-made fable with a strong point but even stronger characters and even a bit of magic. An absolute delight.

(It's a true shame that it can't be seen on the big screen in all its glory. I'm glad Netflix invested in making this exceptional film, but their refusal to release anything theatrically outside of New York and Los Angeles is lamentable, especially when the effects, cinematography, and story of Okja would all be a true treat to catch in cinemas.)

I really don't know what the think about this, the whole thing was just a bit bizarre.

The cinematography and acting from the main character were top drawer, as were the special effects, but the whole tone was a little conflicted.

It felt like a child friendly fantasy film, but for adults, with lots of f's and geoff's, I can't help think that if they'd either gone for child friendly, or adult film, it would have been better for it, but that said the last act was particularly dark.

Tilda and Jake's acting was a bit over the top, they were literally chewing the scenery at points.

All that combined in what felt like veggie propaganda left me feeling a bit odd!

Just finished watching this. I think there were some really strong parts like the opening and ending segments, but there were some weird and slow parts. I felt that the color contrast could've been better. In the office scene it was daytime, but it still looked dim as hell in that room. I also felt the beginning part with Mija and Okja could've been edited a little better. It's hard for me to describe. Maybe it needed some adjustments to sound or something, but I was getting a little bored there.

I also thought Jake's character was annoying, especially in the lab scene. I don't know why they chose him for that instead of some scientist. That shit was goofy as hell and not in the fun way. Overall it's a mixed bag for me. If it had touched up on a few of these aspects this would've been a 9/10 for me. I'm not sure how to rate it at the moment.

This film utterly blew my socks off. I had some affection for Snowpiercer, though I can name specific scenes when I found myself pulled out of it, so I was quietly optimistic for this. I just didn't see that coming. My movie of the year so far. If you'd need a logline, I'd describe it as Pete's Dragon meets Splice. Some very shrewd business by Netflix.

We tried to watch this last night, my wife and I. It was the weirdest movie, somewhere between a vegetarian propaganda film and a cartoon. I thought the opening third with was very charming and well done with Okja and Mija. The rest of the film was a slog and we were completely bored by the end.

It's too bad, because I thought the start of the film had some real promise and inventiveness I haven't seen in a lot of films lately.

I was talking about this film with some friends, and ended up describing it as the type of story you might expect from Studio Ghibli, only live action. Not sure if others will agree, and I don't mean to say it doesn't have its own identity, but the general tone really hits those notes for me.

I completely agree.

I loved it and it is probably the best movie I have seen so far this year.
Its emotional core lies somewhere between a Spielberg and Studio Ghibli movie and its narration reaches global dimensions just as the story deserves. And despite this being a movie that challenges us to question our collective values it never gets preachy, but remains in the perfect spot of entertainment, sympathy and realistic resolutions. It's a fun ride, that's for sure, but it ultimately shows, how fiction has the potential to turn us into better human beings.

Man, the relationship between Mija and Okja is fantastic. And you really feel for them when they are separated or in trouble. I agree that the tone of the movie is all over the place. Especially the last third of the movie. Which was sad. Reminded me of those
animal abuse videos.

Jake's character was over the top, but he kinda grew on me.

Loved it. A much better film than snow piercer. Did not expect to get hit with the emotional punch several times throughout but sure enough had to fight tears. The score really elevates the scenes. It's not memories or murder or the host amazing but a much better effort than his previous film.

Beautiful movie. The relationship between Mija and Okja is really touching.

There was this one thread recently about unnecessarily cruel moments in movies and I say this one has two totally irrelevant to the plot brutal scenes :

Gyllenhaal in the lab roasting her meat

The rape

Edit: Spoiler tags

That stuff was totally relevant to the plot though, to prepare us for the ending and to depict the horror of factory farming. It's cruel but not unnecessary, and it's not gratuitous in its depiction.

Second film to make me cry this year. Didn't expect it to get that visceral and the ending so poignant. Considering some life choices now

I watched it last night and really liked it, especially
the fact that it shows two extremes, the cruel farming and the ridiculous group, especially silver that almost fainted because of lack of food.

I loved the action here, even thought it is not whay one would expect and ALF was super good, would've love to see more of that.

I can see how people may not like Jake acting in here, but I did like it just for the fact that I have not seen him in something liek that. Had no problem with Tilda's acting.

By the way, there are post credits scenes.

Just finished this now and still processing it but I thought it was fantastic. The relationship between Okja and Mija was so incredibly sweet and such a driving force of the film it really moved me. Especially loved the ending and leading up to it. The little girl playing Mija was fantastic and she's got a good career ahead of her should she want to do more acting.

Tilda Swinton was a bit over the top but pretty good and didn't really annoy me too much. Jake Gyllenhaals character was incredibly fuckin irritating and by far the low point. However I did get a good belly laugh when
Lucy Mirando basically told him to shut the fuck up and stop being a whiny bastard during a meeting with everyone

Thought Paul Dano/the ALF lot were pretty decent as well.

Probably my third favourite Bong Joon Ho film after Memories Of Murder and Barking Dogs Never Bite with The Host being my least favourite. I haven't seen Snowpiercer and Mother though so I should remedy that. If 'The Host' is your worst film though (to me anyway) then you must be doing something right as a filmmaker!

I also really want a bacon sandwich now.
