Spider-Man: Homecoming review thread [92% RT]

The Mandarin and Ultron were fantastic villains. Not necessarily what people were expecting, but really stand out performances and they actually felt like a real threat to the hero(es).

Ultron needed a few more moments of him wrecking the high-tier Avengers for that to come across really. They cut away too much from him beating on Thor for like 5 minutes.

Ultron was otherwise a decent villain (good origin, great acting, menacing looks & vibe, fun motives and a superb end with Vision), but I feel they just didn't really show his strength well + his plan to drop a whole city onto Earth was too over the top (why not just have him make something like a super nuclear bomb that the heroes need to be able to stop before it's launched or hits where it's aimed to). He was a great villain in all but one way and that's actually showing how powerful he is, maybe by beating up the Avengers a bit more. The worst beatdown the Avengers got in the movie were because of Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver. Captain America managed to fight against him alone without being severely injured.

And Ultron flying a helicopter was silly. Not sure if it was Whedon's homage to the comic where Thanos flies one but it just didn't make sense for such a powerful entity to do so when he should have far more powerful weaponry on himself and he could fly himself.

Well, Marvel did it. They made the worst Spider-Man movie. This was absolutely horrible. Shit's a massive disappointment. I want my time back.

OK, for real now:

Man... I don't think I've smiled so much during a superhero movie (including both Guardians). They absolutely nailed Spidey/Peter. Just like my American comic books. It has a few flaws here and there and I have a couple of minor gripes, but I loved it otherwise.

Pros
- Tom Holland is Spider-Man. He was so damn good in this and reminded me of the Spidey I grew up reading so much.
- The high school setting is great and doesn't feel weird because everyone actually looks their age (more or less). They got the vibe down pat. So much so that I couldn't wait for more scenes there.
- I really liked the supporting cast.
- A good villain! That's two in a row! Keaton was chewing up scenery and so fuckin' intimidating. I love the suit design.
- Aunt May really does feel like a loving aunt and not, y'know, some grandma that's gonna break her arm lifting up a teapot (that's the one aspect of Spidey that never entirely clicked, for me).
- Ned is the best.
- That Spidey suit is lovely. Captures the Romita Sr. look so well.
- This film is really damn funny. Most of the jokes made me laugh, which is more than I can say for GotG2 (still liked it tho).
- The diverse cast makes me so happy. This is how it should be.
- The CGI is considerably improved from Civil War, to my eye at least. They're not quite there in making an entirely convincing CGI Spidey but it's getting close.
- The second post credits scene is amazing and very important.

Cons
- Fuck Tony Stank for making the classic Spidey suit. Shit still rubs me the wrong way.
- The supporting high school cast, while good, felt somewhat underwritten. Would've loved to see more Zendaya.
- The editing and framing of some fights was a little incoherent.
- The music was really unremarkable aside from a few motifs (like the ominous Vulture theme). Expected better.
- Does the Spidey suit need to be so techy and have an AI? It led to some good jokes but it doesn't really feel very "Friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man"-ish. (Not a spoiler, was in trailers).

I was excited when Marvel signed Giacchino.. but both his scores have been so average. I used to be a big fan, but thinking about it.. the only scores from him that I can remember is his Pixar and Lost work.

So nobody that is still on the fence about Tom Holland? He's a good actor, sure, but man it's like he's a child in that Spider Man outfit. I don't know. And overall it just felt a bit too high schooley for my liking.

I love the Marvel movies but at times I wish they would slightly look at their Netflix shows and bring some of that to the movies. But then it immediately wouldn't be "Family friendly" anymore of course.

Isn't that the point lol

I actually really like his Doctor Strange score, even if he's just riffing on his own work. It's like a modern Zimmer score - you're just gonna get his Greatest Hits again, but it's still good work.

:O

you said everything i wanted to so :O

the humour was down pat. not too much, not too sparse. a bit geeky at times, but really, really, really cute. Ned and Peter's dialogs, in particular, were really fun to keep up with :>

i really enjoyed it :>

TOM HOLLAND IS THE SPIDEY.

So it has a production budget of 175mil, I wonder what the marketing budget is, I've seen ads everywhere.
Also curious to see how much it needs to make to break even, and how much to make sony a ton of profit.

It's funny, really but this is the most 'MCU' movie there is. Spider-Man just feels like he inhabits this world of The Avengers and Ultron and Aliens far more than some of the other movies.

Humour was also on point.

This was my least anticipated Marvel movie but I absolutely adored it. It just oozes charm and fun. Can't wait to see it again.

Holy shit I forgot they had construction at the train station so I've been running around like crazy finding buses and trains to take me to the cinema. There's 4 minutes till my showing and I'm in the train. Hopefully I'll only be missing the commercials.

Damn I'm sweating.

Cannot wait to see the film now. Ever since Civil War, I knew this movie would be great because of Marvel's involvement and Tom Holland, who was excellent in the role.

Like Hulk in the original Avengers movie, Spider-Man stole the show for me in Civil War, he was just perfect. Marvel nailed how Spider-Man should be, from his wise cracking one liners / constant chatter, to showing how strong he is (grabbing Bucky's punch like it was nothing) I had a big grin on my face, the whole time Spider-Man was on screen and couldn't wait to see him in his own movie.

Will be heading to my local Imax this weekend for this one. :)

Garfield WAS a great Spider-Man & Peter Parker and a big improvement over Tobey Maguire. The movies built around him just weren't up to par, but if there's one thing that Amazing Spider-Mans do better than Raimi's, it's Spider-Man himself (the way he acts, moves, fights).

Just got back, cinema was packed (around 250 people). It was pretty good, but I didn't find it very funny
except the ending, that was hilarious
it seemed a little forced similar to some scenes in GotG V2. Pretty much nobody in the entire cinema laughed 95% of the time. Pretty much perfect cast for the whole movie, totally nailed it. Tom Holland is a perfect young Peter/Spiderman.

I really liked having Tony Stark in the movie and
him teaching some of the same lessons he learned as Ironman, whether accidental or not
.

Just came out of the cinema.

That was one damn fine movie. Very different to what have come before it, yet still refreshing as to what has come the MCU way up till this point.

What can be said. It was a very entertaining, if not delightful journey. It wasn't funny in the way were you would laugh out loud like when some jokes was delivered in Guardians of the Galaxy or even Civil War. Sure, there were funny moments, in fact here was a lot of fun, but a different kind of fun.

The supporting cast was underdeveloped, the outcome of the Homecoming was rather disappointing, and especially the lack of Zendaya was head-scratching. Tony Revolori did fantastic with what little he was given, and Marisa Tomei had lots of scenes were she really came across as this energized and relatable aunt. She was very fine, and some jokes around her landed spot on.

The star of the show was Jacobs as Ned Leeds though. Perfect counterpart to Tom Holland and he really worked well in conjunction to Tom's performance. He was this very curious by nature boy who was just as much in for the ride as us viewers. And yet, it was Peter Parke who was the eyes of us looking in through the window to a levelled but relatable everyday Queens, where Iron Man pops up to save the day, where Captain America is part of the history books, and where these larger-than-figures are endearing.

Tony Stark was in the film for about 10 minutes throughout multiple scene without overstaying his welcome really. This was very much a Spider-Man story, who had to come to terms with who he is, and what his goals are. All of his modern day tech and gadgets were interesting, some of them ripped out of the comic book pages, while some of the ideas were crossing the line to what was and wasn't a Spider-Man at its core. I would say Marvel Studios misstepped a bit when it came to the suits AI and different settings.

Fortunately it was almost always made up by smaller things like different kinds of webbing we haven't seen before, and spectacle contained in a smaller frame. Like when he have to deal with everyday crime, have to check out the Shockers and most of all figure out who this huge birdlike "god" is. You could say yet again, a villain was born out of other people's decisions, something Jon Watts really delved into, creating one of the very best villains in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Choices, decision, surprises and events was all happening. He was menacing both in and outside the suit, and Michael Keaton really stepped in character delivering a personality that was both the "threats" of the film, but also this other side of the coin. I really liked the setup for the Vulture especially and think it was the best planned out antagonist since Loki, I will almost say he is my personal favorite.

The best moments where when it was grounded and had that slight John Hughes touch though, where we see Peter in costume under circumstances we haven't seen him in before. It was surprising, it was interesting and very much welcoming. And only is it a story about a kid trying to figure out his way in an Avengers world, bricks are moving developing and extending other areas of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Queens is filled with cameos and surprises, that fans of the comic books will certainly love.

I want to talk about so much, but that's why I'm headed to the OT thread now.

Oh, and this movie just further sustained my "dislike" for a certain hero, lmao, damn what a move Marvel. What a move.

I liked the soundtrack for what it was but it was disappointing compared to what we got from Danny Elfman in Spider-Man 2 for sure. And there's no battle as thrilling as the Doc Ock battles or even the Green Goblin end battle in Spider-Man 1, but the Vulture character himself was great.

Frustrated right now that I can see this in Atmos 2D on release week but only in D-BOX seats that jerk you around (and a huge upcharge).

The Mandarin that went evil because drunk Tony Stark stood him up on that rooftop?

All this talk about the high tech suit is a bit disappointing to me even though I knew about it from the trailers and stuff. I guess I'll just keep in mind that there's a five movie arc so there's more of a chance he'll get rid of it later on. Still excited to see it this weekend though!
