Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Some really early enemies:

One piece regular has huge characters (most characters aside from main ones are at least 7 feet tall)

Multiple unique races like Fishmen.

And finally insane powers. Not to mention the guy who holds a third sword in his mouth and the dude who only kicks.

Don't forget the Minks. Imagine live-action Zootopia.
CP9 would be a nightmare.
Enel and Skypiea? OH MY GOD NO
Fishman Island would be impossible.

I know the show likely won't get far enough but just the announcement is making me think of all the horrible possibilities.

That's stupid.
That's dumb.

YO-Ho-Ho He took a bite of DUMB-DUMB levels of dumb.

I'll eat a mountain of Crow-Crow fruit if they pull it off successfully, but for the life of me I can't see how this works. This isn't just casual cosplay of the main characters... how the heck are they gonna pull a full season show off?

I don't get the point of this at all, certain manga can work being made into a live action show like deathnote, not one piece, just no it doesn't work....only like certain fights like Zoro or Sanji ones would even work...and those are stretching it.

These people just don't understand, if people don't like the anime they sure as hell won't bother with the live action show...this isn't going to bring people to one piece...hell it might even turn off more people, just let one piece grow as a anime and stop this crap.

At least Sanji can't be a horrible pervert in this compare to the manga.

They can't possible do Punk Hazard stuff with him.

There's apparently a comment in this article from Oda saying they've been trying to get something like this off the ground for 3 years. Can you confirm that?

He says there have been many discussions about a live action figure in the past 20 years, and he personally started getting involved with a live action adaptation 3 years ago. Lots of ups and downs, but he feels they have good partners on this one. His condition is that the project does not disappoint fans of the series who have supported it these 20 years. Blahblahblah. Fluff talk.

I mean, honestly, a lot of this isn't impossible.

-Chopper will spend 99% of his time in his "hybrid" form, which will basically be a person with makeup/fur/etc on their face.

-There won't be "massive" humans. Doffy, Kuma, etc, will just be normal sized.

-Fishmen will have prosthetics and body paint, and will wear a lot of clothes to cheat a bit.

-Buggy can be done with the right camera angles, fake hands, etc. You'd see one or two CGI shots per episode that match what he's fully capable of.

-In general things will be toned down, heavy devil fruit powers will be limited to a few money shots, etc.

This all assumes a reasonable budget and smart directing/design, of course. Also, this isn't making it out of development hell or the pilot stage anyway so it'll all be moot. :p

Is it wrong to hope for the former?

It's not wrong. This is a terrible idea at a terrible time where these projects are being heavily criticized for white washing, generally mediocre (at best), and also at a time where current tv cgi could be described as "Not the worst looking thing in the world" (AT BEST).

So do we see them actually attempting to adapt the material or are they going with original villains and a wholly new plot?

Is season 1 going to be East Blue? Or are they going to go by that material even faster?

What are they going to cut out?

What about Laboon or the Giants or all the other crazy stuff that happens relatively early?

So what do we have here. Saint Seiya and Naruto Hollywood live action movies and One Piece live action TV series? Shueisha are really pushing this, don't they.

If they really want to sell their franchises to Hollywood they should try more fitting ones. Like Black Cat or D Gray-man.

I think Luffy fights can work as well

I'm tryna think of the best case scenario for this and I just can't think of anything that won't be a disaster.

It'll probably never actually be made so whatever.
