MS wants to work with Sony to bring the "Better Together" Minecraft update to PS4

But MC isn't console exclusive nor is the content being held out. Not sure where you are going with this?

The content is, and shall ever be.

And this is not only okay, it is in line with literally decades of console policy.

EDIT:

Here, look at it this way. Nintendo cut the blood and gore content from Mortal Kombat because they deemed it to not be in line with their company's, and thus their console's image's best interests. This was a choice made at the highest levels, irrespective of the loud consumer complaints. And Nintendo had every right to make that choice.

The new MC content is being packaged in a way that is untenable to Sony. So they are opting not to partake of it, on their system, much as Nintendo opted out of the blood content in MK. Time will tell if Sony sees similar finacial fallout over their decision.

The content is because they are making a decision to not get on board. No ones gonna go out of their way to appease some of the issues you all have brought up in this thread

Sony's exclusive content is 'the absence of Minecraft'?

Do not be deliberately obtuse. It serves no purpose.

The content is exclusive to every other version.

And, as I have clearly stated prior, they are perfectly within their rights not to do so. Sony does not owe you this update. You are not entitled to it, per any agreement with Sony.

If you do not like the policy, then vote with your wallet in the future. Sony is not entitled to any more of your money, either.

You can use the word exclusive if you're talking about every system but one. That's not what exclusive means.

Which is weird, isn't it? Normally a company would pay for exclusivity to give themselves an advantage. In this case, every other version gets that advantage by default.

Sony are choosing to disadvantage customers who bought Minecraft on their platform.

And yes, it's within their rights, and yes, we can vote with our wallets, but we can also shout about it and try to change their position.

100 percent. But the content isn't being with held if Sony chooses they can have it. Unlike what you previous stated in the thread about exclusive content and exclusive games. I get what you are saying but you are doing a few mental gymnastics here.

Is there anything stopping Microsoft from just adding the new content in to the PS4 version, sans the melded servers aspect if Sony doesn't want to put the PSN and Live ecosystems together? It seems that is a major sticking point so is there a third option?

A lot more development time. This is a new engine the game is designed to run on.
If Sony don't want the game as the developer intends then they shouldn't be expected to hold them to ransom and have that accepted when their reasons are lacking.

Maybe they could have a 'Better Apart' update for the PS4 Edition that just has improved graphics, but the improved graphics weren't designed for the PS4 Edition.

No there's not, the point of the update is to simply console versions by unifying them. It would defeat the purpose of it if there was a separate PS4 version.

Errr I was pointing out the Java version is essentially where the "dedicated fanbase is", as it's the one with pretty much unlimited server numbers and actual mod support.

Where do you get Ps4 is java minecraft? A predisposition for console warifcation?

I am also pointing out the irony of not supporting the much larger multiplayer capability of Java or adding it to the so called better together update for the C++. Instead limiting the multiplayer numbers while pushing even 10 player server as a paid for server on top of the game purchase.

For consoles and phones there is a trade off, you get no mod support or the larger server sizes on PC/MAC.
"So, now the choice is, play an outdated version of the game or buy an Xbox, Switch, or anything other than the PS4."

So then you were replying to the wrong person. The java version of minecraft still has stuff like mods. But the PS4 version is now one of the worst versions of the game, no trade off.

Also as the other poster who replied to you said, the better together update has no trade off as mods were never in the equation for the supported platforms anyway.

Also the java edition is where the dedicated fan base is? I'd like to see some sales figures.

I doubt Sony will change their stance. If console sales were the other way around you know for a fact Microsoft wouldn't allow them and Sony would be begging.

I can't believe people are still using this as a justification.

I honestly don't think that's true when talking about MC. If anything MS has put it on more devices since buying them.

I guess that's true in his instance actually. Minecraft's biggest selling point is that it is playable on pretty much any platform but could they resist having it as a "console exclusive" if it insentifised people to buy their system?

And limit potential sales? May I remind you exactly how much money Microsoft spent on Minecraft? 2.5 Billion Dollars. A business, especially one as rich as Microsoft does not spend upwards of a Billion Dollars if they do not expect to eventually make their money back. Given that the number of Xbox Owners are a small finite value and the number of Java version in the several million, they needed to do something to get their money back and make it not a failed investment. AKA, blast it on every platform, add DLC upon DLC, take development in house to save on contracting costs and merchandise the fuck out of it.

They also now have an ingame 'community' store where people sell custom skin/texture packs and mods/minigames that they take a percentage off of. That necessitating a large ever growing user base which will take advantage of it

I think the game or platform is above all of that. I mean I could be wrong but I don't see them doing that even if Xbox was a market leader. I mean they would've withheld it from the Switch if it was about console sales.

Yes, they might have to develop and host a solution for a singular platform instead of using the infrastructure they already have in place. Who knows the exact details because we don't have a clear idea on how the update was built

Fun Fact 100037:

Many games used to be, and many games still are, console exclusive.

If I wanted to purchase and play Guardian Heroes, back in the day, I had to either buy a Saturn, kick rocks, or else deal with it like a functional human being. I dealt with it like a functional human being, and simply played other games.

Fun Fact 100106:

LOTS of games last gen had exclusive content that was withheld from the other, competitor machines. If I wanted to play the exclusive content, I had to either buy a PS3/360, or else go without.

This is nothing new.

I despise myriad of Sony's corporate policies for the anti-consumer garbage that they are.

This is not one of them.

You're half right. This IS something new. No game has been in a position to break down the walls like Minecraft is.

How many of you actually play Minecraft?
I do on PC. I have another friend who also plays PC, three people on Switch and a nephew and friend on Xbone, And Android. It really is amazing we'll soon be able to play together. This is something I've wanted in gaming for a long time. Damn shame PS4 Players will be left out of the loop.

No they will absolutely not do that. You have to keep in mind that Microsoft has paid 2.5 billion dollars for Minecraft. At this price tag, it's far and beyond the console war because Xbox console alone will never make it back. They are never going to undercut the value of the 2.5 billion dollar IP by intentionally making a specific version of the game inferior. They want the best version for every platform they can possibly get.

Edit: someone already mentioned this. My bad.

I wonder what they can fetch today if they put it up for sale?

*Raises hands*

Got a copy for the 360, XB1, PC, W10 and Switch. Thanks to this I'll be able to play my own world on all of the platforms that I use* (XB1 and Switch mostly).

*Not counting the 360 of course.

Microsoft is pushing very hard for Minecraft to be playable on literally every device and to be used in a ton of different medias that aren't necessarily tied to video games, but they could be planning a console exclusive sequel ?

You really need to stop trying to spin this situation to put Sony under a better light.

For the government educational contract and being the integral part of Microsoft's brand, I bet it's much higher.

If Microsoft put Xbox and Minecraft on sale today, I bet more companies will be interested in Minecraft than Xbox.

This has the cadence of an argument, but the content of an agreement. Who is saying it isn't in Sony's right to refuse? And of course people can vote with their wallet and let Sony know why, hence the thread.

A little OT, but is there a way to transfer my kids minecraft worlds from Xbox One to my PS4? I'm selling my Xbox One and would love to save all the worlds she created.

Helluva time to sell it when your PS4 might not get the update. Your kid is gonna hate you.

Speaking of console crossplay, when Microsoft and Psyonix made their announcements in June, one would have thought that Sony would be permanently called out by a lot of others studios willing to implement crossplay on their game.

Now I was wondering, two months after E3 and all the fuss about it, did any studio have actually express the will to do console crossplay ? I know I did not see anything about it, but I could have missed it.

I'm sure all studios would love it.

Fortnite can play PS4 PC and XBOX ONE!!!? I figured PS4 and PC would be able to play together, but apparently xbox one can play with them too? If xbox wasn't supposed to be able to play with PS4 players, or even PC players (epic) it could be patched out, it's early access and this seems like it's most likely an oversight.

If Sony was actively in favour of Crossplay, aka. If they allowed Rocket League. If they allowed Minecraft. You can guarantee that every single game would have crossplay going forward. As it stands though, its a bunch of major companies for Crossplay vs another Major Company which is against Crossplay in an industry which you have to support all Major Platforms or sign massive deals to succeed.

Lol no.
It's not that easy, Rocket League cross play solution is far from ideal.
Proper cross play means every company building it's own infrastructure like Capcom Fighting Network and that's lot of work when they have Plus/Live options by default.

My son has a PS4 and Switch won't because he uses his switch for MC more but I honestly think he would if PS4 was his only MC console.

At the moment, no. There would be a way if Sony supported the Better Together Update... just to link it back to the thread. However Sony is saying no to that. With that said, you have two options and a third if you like to pray.

1. Put the save on an External Drive, use a 3rd party tool to copy it to your PC, then another 3rd party tool to convert to PS4 format. Then find a way to get it to your PS4s Hard Drive
2. Wait for the Better Together Update, copy the save to the Windows 10 Version then use a 3rd party tool to convert it to PS4 format. Then find a way to get that on your PS4s Hard Drive
...
3. Pray Sony changes their mind on the Better Together Update and just copy it to PS4 when it comes out.

Jokes aside, presumably the infinite worlds update allows you play your saved games from whatever device supports the new version, given the common cloud platform.

So technically you could take your current saves from one console to another after updating the IW.

Not that that helps anybody with a PS4.

And EA, I wake up every morning and thank them for shielding me from EA Access. I would have been to weak on my own to make an informed consumer decision.
