Working my way through this atm, without spoilers I'm up to the bit to get a sword.

The game is an audio visual masterpiece in story telling but the gameplay let's it down a bit, it's pretty much the same puzzles over and over along with very basic combat which is a shame.

There are so many gifs I wanna make but this is so self contained and focused that most of the moments are spoiler territory. :/

I think the combat is quite fun once you nail down the parrying stuff, feels very weighty. The puzzles are quite repetitive after a while though.

The puzzles were a little repetitive near the end, but I thought NT made a solid effort at changing up the formula every once in a while. I only wish there were a bit more tense puzzle sequences like
avoiding the dark because of the monster or finding the three runes in the burning house.
I thought those were pretty great and a nice change of pace.

So question about the ending:
Did anyone else notice the dead hooded figure as senua was walking off right at the end? Not entirely sure what to make of this.. I want to say that it's Zyndel (hela being the real senua, and senua actually being Zyndel, only depicted as the construct he created through years of psychological torture) but as I said I'm not certain

Man, I quit in the third area/door puzzle (One with lots of hanging symbols). Now when I return I don't have the focus vision to do the puzzle and the door wont trigger.

Also the bridge and door in the area are down and open but I can't pass through them.

I was enjoying the game but honestly cannot be bothered starting again.

You've only lost like 30 minutes of progress. It's worth restarting imo.

Probably an hour give or take as I was enjoying the scenery but yea I could bolt back to the area in about 30.

Yea, I was enjoying it too much to not restart, I'm just venting cos it just happened. I'll start fresh on the weekend.

Best camera work in gaming I feel. Better than most tv and film currently.

For those who have completed the game or don't care too much about seeing a lot of it I made this music video just now.

https://youtu.be/zsdaKXBrVQk

The music is by Wardruna if you like Viking shit.

Watching the featurette, after completing the game, helped me to understand the story better. I wish I could've known some of those things as I was playing. I felt the story could have been made clearer, but perhaps it was Ninja Theory's intention to keep players in the dark (so to speak).

Worth watching the making off stuff on youtube too if you haven't already, very insightful.

I had the same Problem, and again a bit later in the game. Even though it should not have happened in the first place, until a patch is available it seems to be a good idea to not quit the game while the "rune-focus-vision" is activated.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
96k on Steam is great, but the game is also available on GOG. So the number is probably higher. (At least I got it on GOG)

Of course, especially as there's also the PS4 version to consider. I referenced SteamSpy's data in particular simply because it's currently the only insight we have into the commercial reception of the game. I didn't intend to imply it's sold ~100k all told but rather at least ~100k.

Would buying the gog version give the most money to devs?

Interesting about the second ending. I'll have to catch that on YouTube. I'm not going to 100% this game.

I think I'll look up a video explaining the story. I feel like I understand 80% of it, but I'm still confused about some aspects.

Playing this at the moment.
And holy shit!!!!

This is one of the best things ever in audiovisual arts.

Seriously impressed with the game so far.

About 3 hours in and really looking forward about what's to Come.

I feel like the game should have ended sooner. The slow movement, the puzzles, the combat, even the story - all of it feels repetitive by the end. And aside from a few moments of anxiety the story had almost no effect on me.

About that ending...
are developers incapable of creating an ending that doesn't involve throwing hordes of enemies at the player? After the war trial and beast I honestly felt like the combat was over - I even jokingly thought that the game might end with each boss surrounded by waves of enemies. I had to pause the game to figure out how to progress past the last fight. It put such a bad taste in my mouth, I couldn't even pay attention to the last cutscene.

I also think that broadcasting the games mental health advisor in the opening credits was a big mistake. Stories like this benefit from ambiguity and interpretation and it would have been far more rewarding to discover it's true meaning on my own. Overall it's a nice looking game that's fun for a few hours but it wears thin by the end.
The fact that she suffers from psychosis is obvious from the very beginning of the game - even without that credit...

I'd agree with this. She is so very clearly suffering from some mental trauma, and isn't shaking it off too well. Honestly, I loved that the credit was front and center. I think they deserved to be there.

This game was advertised from the very beginning as having a character with mental health. There's nothing ambiguous about it the way it's presented as a game that trying to treat it as a revelation the fact that Senua has psychosis instead of showing it front and center would be incredibly distasteful. Also,
the fact that the final fights never end is sorta the point. It's Senua's last attempt at not accepting the death of her partner. The audio cues even tell her to give up.

I was one of the idiots who was fighting for 20 minutes until I realised I had to die.

Apologies if this was posted earlier, but I found it to be a very interesting piece.

Gamespot, "Why Hellblade is More Important to Gaming than You Think."

https://youtu.be/qPRajvBYVqA?t=135

Discusses the decline of AA/mid-tier games and Ninja Theory's attempt to bring it back, with a twist. Good insights into the thinking involved, the budget, the creative freedom of a small studio, and the role of self-publishing and digital distribution.

Makes me want to buy a second copy. :)

p.s. If you look at the slide at 2:26, it gives a sales target of 200-300K.

Well judging by Steam alone, they are going to crush that sales expectation. If Steamspy is at 96k, PSN has to be over 100k.

Hmm anyone getting weird issues running this on pc? Only game to make monitor go into power saving mode. Turned down the settings due to thinking it might be GPU overheating but was still happening.

Haha! Managed to find a bit audio they must've forgot to clip out, it must be the director saying, "yep, that's good" after a take.

With all this talk about playing with headphones, is it okay to play with normal speakers? I don't wanna invest in a headphone for one game.

Just use any old headphones it's worth it purely for the binaural audio. I played through the whole game with some like 25 dollar sony ear headphones and it was magic. I played from the speakers exactly once and it just didn't have the same effect. Doesn't matter if you have a ridiculously expensive audio system setup a set of 15 dollar earbuds will produce a much more impactful experience in my opinion.

I don't like headphones in general so I never bought one.
Will get the game today and try to use my XBO's default headset, I guess...

I keep thinking back on this game now that I finished with it. I keep wondering if it truly accomplished something that it couldn't have done with a publisher who wanted to whittle down the creative vision into something more palpable.

Elements of Senua's illness have been done before, of course. But Senua's condition, and how we experience it, is kinda unique in how it's meant to put you at ease, rather than merely confuse you. But it's not a straight forward kind of unease, like there are with many other horror games, it's....I don't really know how to describe it.

My experiences through Senua's mindscape is that at different turns I was amused, bored, annoyed, afraid, angered, and comforted by the random voices in her head. And I feel that's more how real people experience mental illness. It's not all doom and gloom, but also periods where you experience more ordinary feelings with those voices.

I think that a traditional publisher, if they decided to persue this creative vision with Ninja Theory, would have tried to remove the parts where the voices annoyed or bored because it's rare that you want to bore your audience. But in this case, this almost kinda may be an integral part of Senua's experience. These voices don't just torment her in a dramatic way, they bore, frustrate, and annoy her too. That feels a little real and I have no idea if it was actually intentional.

I ended up not being all that impressed with the game, and I hold to that, and I don't know if this is something a mainstream publisher would NEVER do, but I can't deny it wouldn't mind putting them on edge.

So I defeated Surt, decided to quit the game after that, then load it again and now my screen is in total darkness except for Senua & some torches? WTF?!

Is this a bug?!

Nope, after you defeat Surt , Senua becomes blinded by firelight and most of the game is in complete darkness.

(That's a bug)

I fixed it by walking out of the area, don't ask me which direction tho, it was dark so i just kept running until it turned normal again
