LTTP but I'm currently reading through Volume 2 of I Hate Fairyland,
and I love how it deviates a little from the formula set on Volume 1, the stories don't feel like they are following the same pattern anymore and are just commited on being fun.

The whole Gertrude is surprisingly alive and kills the narrator, followed by gore gore and gore, ending with Gertrude seemingly dead was a good way to quickly set the identity but it got tiring after the third issue.

Seems like for this Volume the author actually had the time to develop the world. The slight tone down on the nonsensical predictable gore was very welcome Falling even more in love with the artstyle and actually having an absolute blast reading it now.

(Btw, thanks for everyone who gave me tips on which comics to tackle next, I'm thinking about The Backstagers).

It keeps getting better. That arc though. Some of it had me rolling around laughing. Its so crazy at times.

Brett Parson being rejected makes me really sad. He told me in an email that it really bummed him out. Super nice dude and I see some of these artists on the list and I go...really...them but not Brett?

:( Yeah, saw a lot of people talking about not getting in on Twitter. Guessing this list is still somewhat incomplete as I don't see tables for McKelvie, Ramos, or the Essential Sequential guys.

Sent an e-mail about a Juan Ferreyra Batman/Harley commission...hopefully I didn't delay for too long.

Yeah the essential sequential people arent listed and they are absolutely going to be there. Also doesn't list Linda Sejic but does list Stjepan.

Wait, is Erica Henderson on there? I was relieved to see Sanford Green still got in and Terry Moore obviously.

Brett took a super cool commission for me. He is doing a 3 person commission which he apparently rarely does. The only really big miss for me is him.

I have a few really nice commissions cooking, Jeff Dekal took a list of names off of me and said he will pick the one he likes most. His art is always incredible so I can't wait to see that.

I got around to read Doom Patrol vol 1. by Gerard Way & Derington this evening. Would have been last night but I watched Kong instead (which was really awesome!). Yea, I really liked that. Totally new to Doom Patrol so not only was I navigating the kooky plot and delivery, the characters in general were all new to me, so it was an interesting experience. What I loved is that on one level, it's this twisty dense heady at times kinda meta story-within-a-story that you can really take in page to page and unpack, and pick apart. And then at the same time it's just delightfully wacky, very heartfelt and colourful and it's saying to you - hey, this is pretty confusing right now but just roll with the broad strokes, don't worry about it too much. It walks a tight rope between the two, and it goes a long way imo to placing your trust in the team that they will pay everything off if you are feeling confused. The whole team work brilliantly in tandem, and the art just brings the whole thing to life, I don't think I could garner the same enthusiasm for this book without the right art to drive and deliver such a energetic world, but Derington & Bonvillain kill it.

2 for 2 with YA then, really great stuff. I would probably pick Shade (or Megan) in a knife fight, but honestly why pick when you could just have both these books.
Told you that you'd like it! lol. Like Shade, the team did an excellent job at being respectful towards the history of the series while still embracing lots of new elements. Casey is such a fun addition and her origin story issue was so amazing. While I do wish we got a more regular release schedule, the overall quality of it makes it easy to forgive.

You've never read any Doom Patrol before this, right? You should check out Morrison's stuff whenever you have a free spot in your trade list. You'll have a lot of fun with it. There's a good mix of story arcs and character development along with really hilarious one-shot issues. It's my favorite comic ever.

Did I see (Potential Shade spoilers and speculation).
That regular Shade ...as in Male Shade is going to be in this at some point?

Yeah, Erica's on there. Hoping to get a Sanford Greene sketch cover this year but not sure what to get as he's probably done a hundred Power Man/Iron Fist ones at this point.

I asked him about PMIF last year and he told me he does loads of them but he absolutely loves doing them. I don't think people realize how much he loved being on that book. He always does a great job on them too. I ended up with Amerikate.

Not sure if it was confirmed, but Mellu definitely teased Rac Shade in the last issue. I'm really interested in seeing where that plot goes.

I hope I don't get too lost with them pulling in old stuff that I haven't read. Thats my fear with Doom Patrol also.

Should I read the Simonson Orion omnibus now or wait until the Fourth World omnibus comes out and read that first?

I suppose it would be more fulfilling to read Fourth World first. But personally, I read Simonson Orion before reading any fourth world stuff and I have no regrets.

This is everything I want.

This is going to sound weird, but are there some good examples of characters who are the respective "heart" of their team so to speak? Like, books where these types of characters who are fairly strong (by strong, I mean written very well)? You know, your Sokka, Xander Harris, Britta Perry, Michaelangelo, Cordelia Chase, Samwise Gamgee, etc. Characters who are so human, so unexceptional, yet somehow they are almost exceptionally human. No exceedingly special or focused skills or traits, yet somehow remaining at the emotional core. Almost unexploitable in their own emotional purity and strong sense of morality.

Warpath from Kyle and Yost's X-Force
Deadpool from Remender's Uncanny X-Force.
Eva Bell in Bendis' Uncanny X-Men
Jean Grey in Morrison's New X-Men
Ol' Blue-Eyed Benji

It's just a character trope that I've become fascinated with recently.

I've read 20 issues of Wonder Woman rebirth. I was really happy to see
Ferdinand
return!!
I'm sure I should just finish up to 25 before asking, but the way things are going so far means...
every Wonder Woman comic we've had since... like forever that involved returning to Themyscira didn't happen
? Maybe I'll understand in 5 issues.

The more I look up stuff on the movie the bigger a mistake it seems to be.

I saw the scene where
Batman is contacting the watchtower and Booster Gold responds
, and it made me think about if it canon to that universe heh.

Fun fact:
Booster Gold is voiced by Bruce Timm.

How do you think it compares to Umbrella Academy (UA was Way writing Doom Patrol without it actually being Doom Patrol)?

Doom Patrol and Shade both exist in the same place where if they had different art teams I don't think either would be near as good, Derington/Bonvillain and Zarcone/Fitzpatrick both bring such strong visual identities to their respective books.

And Casey has the single best origin issue of any superhero ever. That entire sequence was just pitch perfect amazing.

I think it compares pretty well, Way hasn't missed a beat despite not really putting much of anything out since. It's definitely got a bit more ambition structurally and within the actual nature of the plot. Umbrella Academy feels a little more familiar as a book & story whereas Doom Patrol feels like pure undistilled imagination. This book's editor must have been really dialled in to help him realise this and not have it come off incoherent given the nature of where the plot goes in the mid to end portion of the arc (
remember to inhale the psycho gas!
. I'd probably still say start with Umbrella Academy, just to see the natural progression in Way's writing but it's great. It does make me wonder what we'll actually get in vol 3 of UA though!

100% agree on the art comment, I think I would read a slightly more mediocre book to enjoy these artists but honestly, I would not read these books with mediocre art. The art teams on both totally sell and deliver the whole thing at the end of the day, fantastic choices. I absolutely just love the general line direction with the art and the general colour palette that seems to define YA having read these so it's going to be interesting how Mother Panic falls in beside these too. Cave Carson seems like a good fit while that seems like the odd one out.

OH yea, again, now I just want to know about the Doom Patrol. Concepts like Danny, or Robotman's nature, Calder up to no good, it all just makes me interested in their past. I came out of this book with more questions than Shade, and I was less sure in this instance that it wasn't down to having not read the old books but I did a little prodding and it seemed like all my questions were actual mysteries and new plot threads (say, Terry None) oppose to me not getting something from the previous runs so I thought they handled all that really well. And yes, Casey's origin stuff, you could just gush over that right? No spoilers though, but it's incredible haha

I definitely will! It's really just the Morrison stuff I should chase up right? I was actually kind of mind boggled to find out Arcudi wrote some! No-one ever speaks about that though, so I'm maaaybe assuming it's not his greatest work?

The manga magazine I buy every month was 1034 pages this month. First time they've ever been over 1000. Price didn't change. Still ¥680. Also came with stickers and an illustrated short story of one of the manga to celebrate the announcement that it's being adapted into an anime. Pretty cool.

I've always felt American comics should embrace more of the European/Japanese model. Not with everything but some things.

Anthology style books don't do as well here and they would have to be more expensive.

That's true, they haven't in the past but I still think there is something there. They don't need to be full 22 page stories, nor do they need to be on the same stock or in colour. Why not go back to newsprint?
