Waitress poured hot soup on me, restaurant did absolutely nothing

That post you were referring to was meant to be read as "YOU acting like I am angry doesn't mean I am actually angry". I can see how not having the "You" in there can change the meaning. And I've said several times that I have good reason to think the management knew based on how it actually happened. But people here insist to feel that they know more about the situation when they weren't there.

In the end you still assumed, based on evidence you picked up at the scene. But you did not know if the manager actually knew about it.

You did not talk to the manager, either. You failed on communicating that you had a problem. And that's your problem, OP.

Next time, try to talk to the manager. <--- I'm sure this has been said about a hundred times at this point.

nah I take back my post

OP man you always have such a hard time admitting you screwed up. you never own up to anything. not in this thread and not in the other threads where you were in the wrong
This is hilarious. I "screwed up". Okay. I got bowl of soup dropped on me and I'm somehow in the "wrong" here.

Speak up if you want to be compensated.

The waitstaff aren't going to if you don't. Management is likely to "never heard or saw a thing" if you don't.

Free stuff means somebody is getting a paycut or a lower performance eval, so to expect them to voluntarily give you free stuff is naive.

A whole new world..

That's lousy service depending. Did management even know? If not...well...what do you expect?

I mean to me personally an accident is an accident. I'm not going to go complain to management unless I was actually burned or it was on purpose or something crazy. In that case you should have at least gotten the meal discounted or free and of course an apology.

I would have complained more about the bullshit built in tip lol. I'd tell them I'll pay you for the soup and that's it and I won't be coming back.

Don't feel like reading 12+ pages of OP's soup debate but did we ever find out how much soup was spilled? Is this a thimbles /tablespoon or half a cup's worth?

Making the customer ask about it is really bad service.

Yeah. Bottom line, the restaurant has shitty service, but they are not obligated to do anything about it.

Having worked as a server before, I would've immediately notified a manager and had the meal comped.

You got shitty service, if they didn't do anything about it, then you need to speak up to them, or just deal with it.

I would not expect to have to say something to be comped for a bowl of soup spilled on me.

But I sure as hell would say something if they tried to charge me for soup spilled on me.

Right. Back when I worked in the food services I woulda made a point of it. I wouldn't have said anything as a customer either though. It's pretty obvious what shoulda happened.

Did the bowl fall on you?
The bowl fell on my back. Not like flipped on my back face down. It hit my back and it spilled on me, my chair and the floor. It didn't 100% spill on me, but I ended up getting like half the bowl on me and the rest around me.

Uh yeah. Can't believe people are trying to give you trouble. The manager should of been at your table kissing your ass.

Has it ever been said which restaurant this happened at? Because if this is like a fucking Chili's or something then... they ain't gonna do that haha.

This thread is making me kind of upset with GAF. OP should have been comped a free meal and free dessert too. His shirt gets potentially ruined and he's clearly at work with coworkers which means he's spending the rest of the day dirty and unprofessional.

It looks bad to bitch at a restaurant. People he works with might find that classless. Look at all of you ready to judge. Just because OP says it's fine doesn't mean it is. The restaurant should have made good on it.

This is ridiculous. I'd probably call. Tell me what restaurant it is and I will call. Fuck this.

I can't blame OP for not going to management, even if I think that was probably the best recourse. I had a bad waitress recently, and I didn't say anything because anxiety makes it not worth the worry of raising a stink about it.

Man says nothing about bad service in a restaurant .
Man complains on NeoGAF, but not at the actual restaurant.

Sounds like a NeoGAF member to me. Nothing out of ordinary, really.

Not just a free dessert. Should've also been reimbursed for the dry-cleaning of his shirt. And the gas to drive to the dry cleaners. Then when it was ready the manager should've driven to the cleaners, picked up the shirt, then driven to his house and dressed him.

All waitresses are psychic, didn't you know that?

Okay not going to bother reading 13 pages but..

Was it a lot of soup? Like a drip, or a large splash?

Sounds like an honest mistake. She apologized and you didn't make a huge deal over it. Although I would have at least expected some type of complimentary item for it.

Agree, lol.
Sometimes I wonder if this is the only forum where people are so entitled, or society has been changing in ways that logic does not support.

OP, like it or not, should have complained (respectfully), if he wanted something out of this (outside of an apology, which he already received).
The question here is not if the restaurant is bad or not, but if OP got something out of it.
If you want things to be done, you often have to speak up.

Not everybody in this world will come to you and offer your a free meal. People are different, and not everybody comes from the same culture and ways of viewing customer service.
If THAT Customer Service is bad or not, that is a different question people should NOT focus on, as it is not the main point of the thread.

You assumed someone would rat out a colleague to their manager? What kinds of people have you got over there (where ever you are)?

I think the right way for the restaurant to handle this is to comp OPs meal by default. Like if you spill soup on somebody only chance for that person to become a returning one is if u take care of that shit. Also soups can fucking destroy clothes. Op did clothes come out ok?

I agree OP you should've said something but damn you did not deserve this kind of backfire some people are dicks up in here.

Good customer service in this case would have been for the restaurant to be proactive, not having the customer ask for a bill reduction or something alike. Could have just been as much as a free drink, since you cannot expect too much at $15.

I had scalding hot coffee spilled on me once at a restaurant. They gave me a fucking gift card to their restaurant. I ripped it up in their face and paid my bill without tipping. I never went back to that shit place.

What else did you expect? Seriously the entitlement of some people is astounding I'm assuming you guys had parents that literally treated you like royalty and physically harmed themselves in front of you if you were ever displeased

I used to work at a fast food chain restaurant. I was the cashier. The restaurant just opened up and this one guy came in and he was literally the only customer so he had no wait time.

The guy asked for sour cream on the side and instead a new guy put sour cream in his meal.

Guy made a fucking scene, we immediately apologized and remade the meal. I was getting ready to charge him and he literally says out loud "oh, now you guys are expecting me to pay for this?"

Like... Really dude? You had zero wait time, we remade your meal right then and there. And you want the whole thing for free now? Get over yourself

I'm really confused why people keep saying this. The waitress that served his party is not the one who spilled soup on him. Does she not deserve a tip for all her work because another waitress fucked up?

For those who've worked in restaurants, how would you comp op's meal without screwing over the waitress, who would now be getting less of a tip? I'm truly interested in how these things work.

I was assuming the gratuity went into a pot and was evenly distributed, but perhaps not. Maybe it went by sections or individually. But your right, the tip should stay.

At the least, though, they should have offered a discount or gift card or coupon or something. No they aren't obligated to, but I'd expect that courtesy from, at least, a place like Applebees and up.

If you feel screwed over at a restaurant, ask your server to send over a manager. A server does not have the ability to comp you food or reduce your check.

And if you go to a manager, then typically you will get some free shit. But your server will be written up, and if it is a big enough deal they may be fired.

It is a 15 dollar bill. Unless the server was super aggressive and mean to you, just go with it if you are a decent human being.

You have to force your waiter to admit they fucked up to a manager in order to get free food or a discount. And you have to wonder to yourself if it is worth it. Especially under the circumstances that it was an accident.

Now if the soup was so hot it burned your balls off, that is more on the kitchen. But that is a story for another day.

This happened to a friend of mine at a tapas restaurant where the server spilled a load of chorizo grease from the plate onto her dress. We called over the manager, got the meal half price.

Oh so you actually talked to the manager of the establishment and complained, rather then making a thread.......the horror!

OP, you should have asked for compensation if you actually wanted it. Especially if you assumed that it was the norm, and they didn't react on it. Just accepting things and then later complaining about them online gets you nothing.

The thread title is incorrect. The waitress spilled soup, not poured soup.

Poured implies that it was a deliberate act, when in reality it was an accidental spill.

However, in light of the passive aggressive nature of the OP, I would be happy if the waitress really did pour hot soup on him/her.

This is the GAFiest thing ever.

"...restaurant did absolutely nothing"

"To those that have had similar experiences or work/have worked in restaurants, should I have expected something like the meal being free?"

You should only expect a free meal or for the restaurant to do something if you actually communicate the issue with the restaurant. If you don't, and you just accept it and leave, then it's just on you. Restaurants aren't mind-readers. Remember that for next time.

There was this one time where I made a thread about a game shop giving me Christmas CDs instead of Bloodborne, then I went back to the store, and sorted the issue out.
