TCL P607 P Series ( the new mid range/budget 4k/HDR recommendation)

Pro tip for any Comcast xfinity customers with this TV: You can download the xfinity beta app and it functions just like your regular X1 cable box. Live TV, On demand, DVR, etc. Pretty slick. I just pulled out my second cable box which will save me $10/mo.

FYI they are going to start charging for using the app (I think $8 a month) once it leaves beta. At least that was their plan as of a few months ago.

spectrum too seem to be offering a separate "spectrum stream" product instead of requiring a separate digital box or dvr rental

that would be fucking lame. is that even cheaper than renting a separate box?

Awesome... but how do we convince Comcast to scrap the 1TB data cap? I got a P605 a couple of days ago and my biggest question is whether j can actually afford (bandwidth wise) to stream 4K content.

I could be wrong, but I don't think streaming from Comcast's dedicated services counts toward your cap.

Hopefully someone here can help because I can't find an answer online. So PC games like shadow warrior 2 and RE7 work just fine with HDR (though RE7 is REALLY dark with it enabled). However I can't get Mass Effect Andromeda o work in either HDR10 or Dolby Vision. The game defaults to HDR10 but isn't recognized by my TV and is washed out. When I enable Dolby Vision, the whole screen turns pink. I've tried this with HDR on and off in the display options and with various settings enabled in the NVidia control panel. No matter what I select, I get the same result. I do have the HDMI port set to HDMI 2.0 on the TV settings. Seeing how they are no longer patching the campaign, I was hoping someone could shed some light on what's causing this issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

Is this not sold outside the US?

Unfortunately not. I don't know if it's true but I read somewhere it may have to do with licensing issues with the Roku OS and the European markets.

I think it's like $2 a month cheaper. Here is the exact language from their website:

'Is there a charge for using the XFINITY Stream Beta app on Roku?

Customers will not pay equipment charges with respect to their use of Roku devices. All other fees associated with a customer's service will apply, except that, during the Beta trial, Service to Additional TV charges for services to outlets connected to Roku devices are being waived. On conclusion of the trial, you will be informed of the charges that will apply for connecting this device with your XFINITY TV service and will have the opportunity to opt in."

Streaming using the Roku app doesn't use any bandwidth.:

"Will the XFINITY Stream Beta app use data from my XFINITY Internet Data Usage Plan?

Live TV, XFINITY On Demand and Cloud DVR recordings will not count against your Internet data usage threshold if you are connected to your in-home XFINITY network. The XFINITY TV video service delivered through the XFINITY Stream Beta app is not an Internet service and does not touch or use the Internet. Rather, it is a Title VI cable service delivered solely over Comcast's private, managed cable network, so it will not count toward your XFINITY Internet Data Usage Plan. Usage of any other apps on Roku devices, including any TV Everywhere apps accessible with your XFINITY TV credentials, do use the Internet and will count against your XFINITY Internet Data Usage Plan."

Unfortunately if you want to get rid of the data cap you'll have to pay them an extra $50.

Watching the Chiefs vs Patriots game right now and I think it looks pretty good with my cheap monoprice OTA antenna

Just bought this TV a week ago and hooked it up to my old Yamaha rx-v671 receiver. Enabled hdmi arc on the tv and receiver and it worked great...until today. All of a sudden the tv no longer recognizes the receiver. Tried every troubleshooting option I could find: powering on and off, resets, new hdmi cables, updating firmware, etc. and it still won't work. Has anyone else experienced the arc handshaking just not working on the tv anymore?

This is an issue with Nvidia drivers and Microsoft.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1003426/geforce-1000-series/hdr-problem/5/

Some people have got it to work but it requires usually older drivers and other things.

Supposedly from some reports the new windows update, the "Fall" update fixes this issue and lets HDR stay off on desktop (so the colors don't look all washed out) and HDR games will turn it on automatically.

I read that but I thought this was fixed with a later Nvidia driver update. I don't need HDR enabled in the display settings to turn it on in shadow Warrior or RE7. I flip the setting and get the HDR prompt on my TV.

It's obviously still fucked up, so you could be right. I guess I'll wait until the fall update before I mess with it anymore. Thanks for the response.

Edit:

Just noticed the dates of the latest post in that link are very recent. Well that answers my question, thanks again.

Unfortunately if you want to get rid of the data cap you'll have to pay them an extra $50.

Cox Communications is doing this exact same thing now.. 1TB Data Cap and you have to pay $10 per 50GB for overages. Or you can pay an extra $40 or $50 for unlimited internet. As it stands right now I've paid an extra $30 to $50 every month for my overages since it started but i'm too stubborn to pay the straight up $50 for unlimited.

I spoke with a few different customer service reps about these overage charges, and I've been told each time that "Only 1% of our customer base even comes close to exceeding the 1TB Data Cap" ... ok, so why do you even NEED to charge us if ONLY 1% of your customer base is exceeding the limit??? "Because all the overages are putting major strain on our systems and this was the only way to get people to stop using as much data"

Yet they offer unlimited data for $50 and it's somehow no longer a problem if someone uses like 5TB? What happened to all that heavy strain on the system?

Such a load of greedy crap

Below is what I posted a few pages back. It's essentially Rtings recommendations, though they may not be for everyone. Hope you like the TV, I'm still floored how cheap it is.

I followed Rtings guide but didn't touch the color space or white balance.

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/p-series-2017-p607/settings

Basically:

Picture mode: movie
TV brightness: normal for SD, brightest for HDR
Picture size: auto
Local contrast: high
Backlight: 20 for SDR, 100 for HDR
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 100
Sharpness: 0
Color: 45
Tint: 0
Color temperature: warm

Under 'Expert picture settings' in the smartphone Roku app I have noise reduction turned off and gamma around 2.2.

Really happy with how everything looks at these settings. Almost everything will switch automatically, so you will have to calibrate for separate settings when watching in SDR and HDR. The only setting I change manually when viewing SDR or HDR content is TV brightness between normal (SDR content) and brightest (HDR content).

Hope that helps.

Local dimming improves contrast, not brightness. The whole screen should appear dimmer, though only slightly. The higher your local dimming setting, the more it'll appear to dim. Local dimming won't be dimming the bright areas of a scene though, so I wouldn't worry about the brights not being bright with it enabled. You can also turn down the setting to better fit your liking.

Ok thanks yes it gets dimmer but I never seem to notice any brightness intensity in brighter scenes it just seems like all of it is dimmer oh well I have it on low on games we'll see how it goes.

I use it in media & TV at medium or high with no problems

i generally don't find local dimming as useful for gaming unless its like a dark game. its mostly a video thing with me. especially with stuff that has black borders. i love my inky letterboxes. lol

although that might be changing with more stuff implementing hdr. damnit destiny 2.

are people having to lower the gamma in hdr picture modes to get back some of that shadow detail? i currently have it set to 1.8 cuz 2.2 often seem too dark

I imagine room lighting makes a difference but 2.0 and especially 1.8 was too washed out for me. Unless it's an issue with a game, like infamous, I usually don't have crushed blacks.

Just got mine in and got everything up and running!

Its glorious!!! Worth every penny!

Agreed, if you play a ton of games this TV is a no brainer for the price. I almost bought an LGC7 and decided to risk buying a budget TV instead. I'll be looking at budget sets in the future from now on.

So this and the PS4 Pro go well together? How's the HDR?

I got this tv and the Pro within weeks of each other and I couldn't be happier. HDR is amazing as long as it's implemented well in the game. Horizon Zero Dawn, Wipeout, Resogun, and BF1 all look fantastic in HDR.

Does this TV have the "real" or "fake" HDR I keep hearing about?

Sorry I don't know know much about tv technology lol

It's real HDR. The peak brightness doesn't reach 1000 nits like some high end displays but it's plenty bright to take advantage of HDR. What you're thinking of are TVs that can accept a HDR signal but lack the display to support it. This TV has a wide color gamut, nice peak brightness, a 10-bit panel, support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. All things you want in a real HDR TV.

Is that present in all models or is it just a bad luck thing? And is there a fix for it?

Ok I grabbed an Xbox S today and with about five owned games having HDR I finally got to see what all the fuss is. Was going to wait for X but with Madden and battlefield getting HDR patches this week figured what the hell.

Firstly I wasnt so impressed as I don't know what I was expecting that this TV want already delivering. Now after several hours of adjusting and trying to understand, I see more realistic lighting. Natural.

Also GR wildlands at night finally got me to see where local dimming helps in games. Excellent detail and colors and lighting in HDR with fald on as compared to off in night scene. The detail was much more crisp and what appeared washed out dark areas became clear shadowed areas.

Can not see any difference in most games in daylight with local dimming on, FH3, Madden, even battlefield although all look good in HDR. Now NBA 2k17 and Prelude 18 look awful.

Well it's not a hardware thing. Assuming it can easily be fixed in firmware. Not sure if others have noticed it. But rtings corroborated it when I tweeted at them to see if they could reproduce it.

Just to describe in more detail:

- I have sharpness set to 0 in all pictures modes I use for both sdr and hdr.
- when the tv switches from a sdr picture mode to a hdr picture mode it's bumping up sharpness. To what value? I don't know as my settings still say 0 but it seems to be something really high.

The "fix" for me is to just bump sharpness +1 which resets it back to using your actual sharpness setting and then I set it to 0 again. You should see the difference immediately. As all the artificial edge enhancement is gone.

How is the input lag on this when gaming in 1080 P with HDR?

Also is there any difference between the P series and the C-Series in terms of input lag?

And how do Blu-ray movies look on this TV?

With CEC enabled, HDMI devices do turn off when the TV is turned off, but the TV's remote can't be used to navigate the menu of our PlayStation 3 or Samsung UHD Blu-ray player, which is possible on many other TVs with CEC.

This TV is such a huge value, I actually started considering upgrading... Until I read that. I rely on that feature for controlling my PS4 so my girlfriend can use Blu-rays.

Just bought this TV a week ago and hooked it up to my old Yamaha rx-v671 receiver. Enabled hdmi arc on the tv and receiver and it worked great...until today. I've had this issue with a Denon receiver and my Sony KDL55W800B and it happened once or twice a month. Is have to hold down a couple buttons on my receiver to completely clear the internal memory, and then it would work again. I had my settings saved on the computer so I could quickly (~5 min) restore everything, but it was about.

They released firmware update for both the TV and reviver periodically, and after a year, one of them seemed to completely fix it.

Just read the reviews linked in OP. It's 14ms. I'm sure rtings has info on both models for you to compare.

Went and got mine yesterday. Got everything set up and it looks really good.

I do have an issue though, it has what I assume they call clouding directly in the upper center of the screen. It's pretty bad. It sucks because it's a 3 hour round trip if I want to go get a replacement.

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
Hey guys, I've been thinking about maybe returning this TV and getting the LG 43UD79-B monitor instead. It's a 43" monitor with an IPS screen and should have better viewing angles and color than the TCL, albeit without HDR. Less input lag too and the built in speakers are supposed to be awesome.

Does anyone think it's worth just keeping the TV or should I go for this? HDR doesn't really impress me and the smaller size would actually work better in my setup.
