DOOM on Switch will have full campaign on cartridge, multiplayer as optional download

So calling it The Switch's Killer App is really real?

I'd say one of the five killer apps that together form Switch's killer app
Voltron
.

On topic:
I'm fine with this workaround. It is better than a mandatory download and I don't think I'd play multiplayer on the Switch. It's already a big barrier to play a FPS on a console.
I really hope it gets pointer/gyro controls. Then I might consider playing multiplayer on switch.

What's the MSRP?

Campaign should be 80% and multiplayer 20% of the total MSRP.

They'd probably sell more copies in stores if the campaign was discounted, then upsell for multiplayer as paid dlc.

Also this has to be 60fps, no way Id releases 30fps Doom.

Good call on splitting them up. Definitely wish they would opt to do the same for the PC version so I don't need to have like 50 gigs of worthlessness on my HDD.

And here I had trouble sleeping, thinking that the game is already 70GB (or more?) on PC, how's it gonna fit on that tiny cartridge?
Perfect solution to an obvious problem.
Now just implement gyro aiming, please!

To be fair I'm more up for Doom because of the soundtrack (seriously, Mick Gordon puts out great stuff on whatever he does) but the fact that the cartridge contains the essential part of the game makes it the preferred option for me. As long as the FPS holds up and there's no slowdown during gameplay it'll be a blast to play.

I wish they would do something similar for the PS4 version. I have it sitting around and I like it from what I played, but I accidentally deleted it, and I really do not want to waste 100 GB or whatever stupid size it is just to play it.

People have got DOOM running on Celeron CPUs with intel HD graphics at 45-60 FPS by using console tweaks on PC. I think it's safe to assume that the devs will be able to hit 60 on more powerful hardware which they can target directly and work at a much lower level on than simple console tweaks.
Confident it will be 60.

So, can the "Switch can't run modern AAA games" arguments tone down now?

Sure, some games are easier to port to the console than others. Games that can't get good performance on the XB1 wouldn't probably be worth to try. Also, CPU heavy games would probably have to do gameplay compromises. Always online games and games with a constant stream of huge patches would face storage issues. But otherwise, the tech is there.

Switch is not a Wii, 3DS or Wii U. Its modern handheld hardware, that its closer to the x86 twins than the Vita was to the PS3.

Very fascinating to see how it will run doom, wolfenstein and similar current gen AAA games.I think it might be possible run these games in 60 fps in 720p on low settings (or at least in 30 fps with some settings above low), which would be cool. The guy in the reddit thread below got DOOM to run in 40 fps on low settings using a GeForce GT 420M, a 0.2 TF GPU (it is unclear what resolution he uses though). This suggests that the latest version of Idtech is really scalable. Switch has almost twice the flops (0.393 docked, 1/3 of x1) and uses a more efficient architecture (maxwell) (it has less ram though, only 4GB),

If these games are successful I would bet we will see more 720p/low settings current games on switch

It is offensively bland and derivative.
I love the multiplayer on DOOM. It's just proper old school with maps just the way I like them. Everyone seems to like bigger maps and more players these days but I prefer this style.

It's a shame the multiplayer will be an optional download because it makes it less likely that people will jump in and give it a try, which means the player counts will be lower.

I'd buy this in a heartbeat but as a handheld only Switch user it hurts my hands just thinking about it...aiming in Splatoon is already a bitch to me, playing Doom efficiently would be impossible

DOOM is known for its campaign, but its MP is also a lot of fun. It's fast and arcadey, jumping all over the place in elaborate maps, rockets flying everywhere. You can even play as the demons. I think the MP is a bit underrated, perhaps because people blame it for getting all the post-launch support when what we really wanted was a single-player expansion.

I really liked what I played on PC. But I heard it is full of cheaters now....

The best solution IMO, I wish that was an option for the PS4 version.
Or any other game with multiplayer.

Why? This isn't optional for digital users either on switch and discs on ps4/xb1 have enough space to keep the whole thing?

I can support it being an optional install even from the disc bur forcing everyone to go digital even when they buy physical is bs.

I think the future (sadly) is just a package with a code to download the game.

I don't hate the mp - the movement, weapons and levels were fun! It was brought way down with the demon gimmick though.
I played my fair share of it on PC, will most likely never touch it again.

From a dev point of view, it makes the most sense to cut it/make it optional out of this version too.
All of the paid DLC was for the multiplayer. Nobody was stoked for that and with an optional multiplayer, nobody would even had the incentive to buy more than the base game.
This includes all the DLC, there is no new DLC coming and Bethesda loses money with a bigger filesize on the switch.
It's a win for everybody - except digital only buyers ;)

I'd be interested to know if Arcade mode is still in. Didn't test that mode yet, but it was somewhat praised before.

Excited for the hands on impressions! Hope some tickle through before next week.
