New Super Mario Odyssey trailer

It's (formerly) EAD Tokyo.
Don't ever compare a game produced by Koizumi to fucking Yooka Laylee of all games.

ssshhhhh

Let the hot takes consume you.

I'm very disappointed by the level design. I was worried already back when they told us it was outside of the mushroom kingdom, but I kept an open mind. The cap kingdom in particular just looks uninspired, like a bad Yooka Laylee level. The seaside level also looks boring, nothing looks exciting making me want to explore. It's the same for the rest of the kingdoms they showed off. They just look wide open and empty. I hope there's plenty more of these kingdoms we're not seeing because I want to love this game so much.

Yet I praised a Nintendo game, 3D World, in the same sentence for looking better to my own eyes. The game is very smooth in terms of animation and the gameplay looks fun, but the levels just aren't doing it for me from what I've seen so far. People who can't accept a differing opinion on something as subjective as graphics should be ignored.

A discussion regarding the technical merits of a game's visuals is not subjective at all. It's one of the most objective fact based discussions that can be had about a video game. If you prefer the aesthetic/art style of a game sure, but that's not what was said.

Some light spec about
Luigi possibly being present in the game (not necessarily being playable, mind you)
that might be interesting. I'm not super sold on it, though.

And I'm still more interested in that goddamn dark purple billboard because no kingdom shown so far seems to fit that, goddammit

maybe the portrait is an image of early donk city, so some billboards may not reflect the final build

Yeah i think some of those levels have some parts where you can play with luigi instead? Like that purple or green star in galaxy?

It would shock me if if Luigi isn't playable. Lets look at the previous games by the same team.

Galaxy
Galaxy 2
3d land
3d world

What do they have in common? Luigi is playable.

Would the fact that there are so many costumes stop them from adding Luigi this time? I can excuse them for no other playable characters for this title. Seems like a lot of work

Nothing about this post makes any sense. Both Galaxies and 3D World are outside the Mushroom Kingdom and that was fine, the Cap Kingdom isn't uninspired I don't know how you arrived at that conclusion and none of the levels are empty and boring. There's tons of gameplay proving otherwise.

One thing I'm hoping this game has is secrets. Like obscure stuff that might take the community months to uncover. Easter eggs, secret rooms, maybe even whole levels. The 3D games have been quite bad at doing this.

A hidden Kingdom -- literally all of Hyrule from BotW, but you can explore it Mario-style, and capture Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos...

edit: I reread that post and I don't even know how to respond to it really

Well, show examples to the poster (concepts such as inspired and style points are subjective) how the game is not “wide open yet empty” and that will shut him or her up good :).

Edit: my comment was maybe for the post of another “critic” maybe.

For some reason, I haven't been compelled to watch any piece of media or read any bit of news regarding this game since its reveal trailer, yet I've got the game preordered - I think I'm going to be in for quite an experience. :D

This footage from the recent Direct maybe? To me at least, this seems to hint that there is much more hidden than what's apparent when you first see a level.

No.. many many of the shots shown so far of Odyssey are, visually speaking, an absolute mess. I've been shocked by how many people think the visuals are good. They're not. At least not what I've seen so far.

In particular whoever okayed the visual and graphic design of New Donk City should be fired. It's not the only problem level, of course, but it's the easiest example.

It could be that your opinion is a minority. I think the visuals look great, and they seem improved since the original reveal. It appears to be a lovely game to me.

Most any game will have a minority who disagree on some aspect, such as visuals. It's okay to disagree about such things as long as we acknowledge that disagreement isn't necessarily a universal truth.

Nobody should be fired.

It's just opinions. Visual style is massively subjective. Let him have his view.

Really ? I was thinking I may as well keep the media blackout going at this point and be surprised when playing the game.

Don't watch the E3 trailer. If a media blackout is what you want then definitely don't watch any more trailers. Only a month!

I didn't say it's a bad game. It's probably going to be a great game. An ugly great game.

To someone else above's point, I absolutely think 3D World was far better visually. It had a more cohesive style and the individual elements were better realized.

Odyssey is a much larger and more open game and that undoubtedly explains much of why it looks so much worse graphically, but for everyone who thinks my opinion is crazy or spits their coffee out know that I feel exactly the same after reading people who think it's visually gorgeous.

The cap kingdom and ice level in those videos do look fairly visually monochrome. That's by design, obviously, but at the same time, that's going to be not very visually exciting to some. Especially spread over wider spaces. I'm sure other levels will be a lot more visually punchy.

As for the space in those levels, yes, it also looks 'loose' and that might appear boring to seasoned players. But I guess those levels are probably fairly early on in the game and designed to encourage movement experimentation for novices.

So I don't think some of the opinions above are outrageous, but I really doubt those two levels are typical of the meat of the game.

Can you post some visual examples of what you refer to in 3D World vs. Odyssey?

From the latest videos, I get the feeling just moving Mario and making him perform all the new moves will be fun in itself.

That’s the feeling I had when playing Mario64 - the simple joy of making him seemlessly climb trees and do a summersault at the top, doing a series of jumps, swimming... all of this was exhilarating and fun.

Besides, playing dress up is one of my favorite thing in games (Fashion souls for ever) so I know I’ll enjoy the costumes greatly. Couple that with picture mode and I already have hours of playtime before me.

No, but I'll post some examples of Odyssey looking, in my view, terrible. Certain shots do look a bit better, sure, the ice world looked okay. But those are the minority.

Many of these shots don't even feel like something designed or implemented in this decade. They're just so bland. There are so few examples of any kind of real artistic flare or, like, richness to anything. It's just stuff barfed everywhere. Stuff.

I like the fact that Mario is travelling around and the places look so different. I do think that 3DW is a great looking game but I like innovation in my Mario games. Of course you can think the final result is poorly done, that's your opinion and it's fine.

I'm sorry for the coffee comment, it was snarky. My bad. :)

Out of all the shots you could have chosen you pick one of my favorite shots, the Sand Kingdom's entrance, pls.

The lack of cohesion is a feature, not a bug. The whole point of the game is that it’s going to a whole host of places that the Mario series hasn’t touched and experimenting with a load of new styles and visual cues. No one’s saying you have to like it, but dinging the game for a lack of visual cohesion when that’s the entire point of the exercise is more than a little daft.

I’m also not seeing what’s inherently wrong with the two wide shots of Tostarena and New Donk City. To my eyes, they look poppy and fun, with enticing level geometry and clear, interesting sight lines. Yeah, the side view of the RC minigame’s a little cheap, but the vast majority of players will look at that for a handful of seconds.
