It's only because they created the expectation by doing it in 2015. Similar to how people are pissed about My Nintendo vs Club Nintendo even though they don't actually have to do a rewards program at all.
As good as all the Mario trailers and other vids have been, watching them play this little snippet has me more hyped than anything shown. I was harboring some fears about it being a hand-hold stroll through a passive open world.
My fears have been nuked. The SMO gameplay was a HUGE win for this presentation imo.

I feel this one was much better than the 2015 game, the choice of games was far more entertaining and the competition was great. Also the amount of chokes was amazing.

Pro's -
- They made it a lot more visible to tell what was going on compared to 2015, maybe it's the advantage of Spectator Mode, but it's much clearer to tell what was going on with Splatoon 2 compared to the original at times.
- They had a fair bit of fun with some of the games they picked for the underground this time, notably the Mario Party and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe blocks standing out quite a bit.
- Good interesting challenges for the most part, there are some duds like the 50cc Mario Kart race but overall a good showcase of the games.
- Commentary was... alright. No little kid this time which I thank for my ears sake.
Con's -
- Noble effort on the kids that made it far, but lets be realistic, they weren't going to make it the whole way, why not have split categories, Junior, Senior and Masters competitions like the pokemon Championships have?
- There is a bit of oddness having a Team Event decide who goes through and who gets sent to the Underground so late into the run with Splatoon 2, sorta sucks that some people could just get sent to underground due to a bad teammate, thankfully the matches turned out mostly balanced in the long run.
- The whole thing at the end of it all is still a big advertisemnt towards all the stuff Nintendo is selling recently, if you just knew all the big games nintendo had right now and play them , that's basically all you need to win. Underground has the variety, but you can just avoid it entirely and just get this years catalogue of games + Smash and Mario Maker (Even Mario Party 2's presence feels like it's there just to advertise Mario Party the 100).
- Also, open it up to the whole world next time! Don't call it World Championships if only America (and I think a bit of canada) can compete, how can I in the UK enter in
and immediately lose in the qualifying rounds.
All in all I give it a 1, 2, Switch Milk out of 10. Bring this for 2018's competition.
I now wait to see where I rank on the Wall of Shame for posts in this topic.
They weren't going to announce anything new. It was broadcasted on cable ffs. That's not an environment for new announcements, that's an environment to plug your shit that's already out or that's coming out in a few weeks.

It's always going to be World Championships in America. Get over it. Major League Baseball calls their Championships "World Championships" too even though it's only in America.

the first bit of gameplay to not include a regional coin counter. It didn't seem to be a separate level, though, because there's a rocket at the end of the challenge that would take you back to the main area of the kingdom. Dunno what that means.
It's strange to not have at least one announcement, but this was on Disney XD and the 2015's NWC was pretty popular there and got many reruns. Guess their main point was trying to sell the Switch and games like Mario Odyssey to kids and not announce new games for more hardcore fans.

The special games for Underground were also pretty cool. Super Mario Bros Deluxe and that Bird&Beans game were awesome.
I like how this event wasn't a blatant advertisement like many other events (*cough* VGA *cough*). There's obviously some advertising going on but it was mainly fun which is cool.
This was way better than the 2015 one, I hope they do this again except actually make qualifier rounds attainable for people who don't live near only 5 big cities.
Nearly all of the game challenges were fun as hell to watch. 8 player Smash was complete hilarious chaos. Mario Bros Deluxe was pure tension and the Mario Odyssey challenges made me even more excited for the game.
Until they put their big boy pants on and accept the Melee/Smash 4 scenes with real support I just can't care about anything they do in their eSports attempts.
They have a huge fan base willing to embrace them.
Im surprised plenty here have never heard of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe until now. That game was one of my most favorite GBC games, and 2-Player is a highlight that really should be in future 2D Mario games.
