Nintendo World Championships 2017 Thread

Nintendo has a great thing going with these championships. I find them very fun to watch even though the gameplay on show might not be that great. Hopefully they continue these for awhile.

For about 10 minutes tonight, Hexagon Heat was an esport

That alone was well worth the 4+ hours I spent watching tonight.

Great showcase all around too. Would be awesome if they kept doing things like this every so often.

I couldn't see most of Tetris, Mario Party and the final two levels, but the whole thing was a lot of fun and well-done. My favorite was probably Donkey Kong. This won't come out right, but It was really fun to watch them all die over and over and over. Only one guy made it to the end.

Until they put their big boy pants on and accept the Melee/Smash 4 scenes with real support I just can't care about anything they do in their eSports attempts.

They have a huge fan base willing to embrace them.
They have a huge fan base already embracing them, too.

Just checked twitter...did these kids really suck that bad at Tetris?

Yes. And it was hilarious to watch.

This was way better than the 2015 one, I hope they do this again except actually make qualifier rounds attainable for people who don't live near only 5 big cities.
I feel like an online qualifying tournament would be the way forward. Like create a Switch app and have a single level of Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2 and Arms in a tourney like mode. I guess that’s a lot of unnecessary work though. But it’s act like a demo to bring people into those games.

I hope the Mario Party 2 showing has shown everyone how awful of a mini-game Bumper Balls is. I've never seen it not end in a draw, and I play this game with friends pretty often.

I'm still disappointed it made it to the Top 100 collection.

Was about 16,000 people watching on twitch in the finals, not sure if it streamed anywhere else. Was it on youtube live?

It was live on youtube with roughly 24,000 viewers. So 40,000 combined. No news on the Disney XD Numbers yet, So-So numbers overall, but it did feel the event wasn't really all that well advertised. Many were surprised it was happening this weekend.

when I turned this on on XD it was right when the Tetris was happening. Had to hit record because it was that bad of an effort. Will use for a pick me up later when I have a crappy day.

EDIT: Edited to confirm, yes it did work as a pick me up.

Honestly would have missed it if I didn't wake up from a nap and check twitter. (It was very late for EU)

Hope these become regular events. I'm guessing they can't do it every single year, but it would be nice.

These are obviously marketing events, look at the lineup.

Arms
Splatoon 2
Odyssey
MK 8 Deluxe
Samus returns.
Mario Party (even though they didn't play the new one)

Its the games Nintendo is trying to sell this year. So if they have a lineup that makes sense for this kind of event, it makes sense to hold another one.

I knew they wouldn't announce anything. As I said in the prediction thread, it was laughable to think they'd announce Smash here and not at E3 next year. There was next to no marketing surrounding this event and Nintendo aren't going to pull attention away from Mario so close to release.

....

Nah, this should be grounds for banning from all future videogame events, across the board.

I went to sleep after Donkey kong, and thank god, that was hilarious, this would have just been nightmare inducing.

That means you missed Mario Party 2 which was frankly amazing.
