Yeah, Laura. I tried using the environment but each time I got out of the valve she'd insta kill me so I just splurted her with the flamethrower like 6 times and shot her as she burned
Shock bolts. They give u 1 in that part to freeze her under the fire in the center of the room. just set a trap or hit her as she's under it. of course it helps to have more than 1 so she doesn't hit you as you turn the valves. I died a few times of course.
Claws of the Horde is IMO one of the best levels of the generation. I still remember playing that level on release day and thinking to myself "holy crap this is amazing! Mikami still has it." Then I checked into the TEW OT and saw tons of people shitting on the chapter. It still baffles me.
Well just look at the overall reviews of that game, the whole thing baffles me. Well I understand it's an uneven game, it's no masterpiece but so many of the encounters in that game are so great and so far ahead of what most other games like it even attempt.

I think ive finally realized what is really putting me off the combat. I'm at ch 12 now, and I still only have a choice of pistol or shotgun (and crossbow too obvs), but theres no mid range assault rifle like the sub machine gun from TEW1. So I'm still trying to mostly take out these fast moving enemies with a shitty pistol, and saving shotgun rounds for larger enemies. This would be a lot more enjoyable if it had a full auto weapon so I'm not constantly struggling to line up headshots.
As much as it pains me to say it, as a TEW fanboy, but the combat in the game is just... bad. Of all the things they could have got wrong I really didn't think combat would be one of them, but they really did make an ass of it. And there really hasn't been any big, memorable shoot out moments either. Even the cabin defense bit was relatively weak.
TEW2 is definitely a good game, but the more I play it, the more it just makes me wish I was playing TEW1

Uh that was only a bonus unlockable for beating the game and IIRC you couldn't even get more ammo for it. TEW 1 had no automatic weapons in the base game.
The aiming in this feels choppier or could it be the framerate? doesn't matter if i use mouse or gamepad, it's much harder than it was in the first game to line up head shots, because the crosshair "jumps" around more, it's especially evident when i use the mouse (No, i'm not talking about the regular weapon swaying, more of a jerkiness when i aim and move the cursor).
And this is considering that i locked EW1 to 30fps.
At the moment it has become my biggest gripe, though i am still enjoying the game, as different as it feels from the first one.

The context for the encounters is usually of no concern to the game, and mechanically, the encounters are good but not particularly memorable. Combined with frustrating controls and, especially, frustrating aiming controls, it feels progressively more like an action game that wants to make the action a pain in the ass. I feel like that's the main reason the deus ex crossbow exists: to offset the frustrating game balance, like a bandaid over a knife wound. But toggling bolt types is clumsy, and having so many bolt types is clumsy and tremendously absurd compared to the rest of your arsenal. And then you have the abundance of instant-killing enemies.
There was some great feedback from enemies in the first game, but they were ultimately more rigid and less fun to fight than Ganados.
The matches system was an interesting flourish, but it didn't add to tension so much as annoy. I prefer curb-stomping -- it's practical and not arbitrarily limited.
So, I think it comes down to how a player interprets certain design quirks. Some players find it thrilling and I was just annoyed most of the time. Though, that's the horror genre in a nutshell.

The enemies heads are smaller to start with and they're far more aggressive than in the first game. It's fine they want to encourage you to stealth around more but when you do have to break out the guns the pistol feels extremely weak in this . It might just be me but I find the laser sight actually makes it even harder to aim
The laser-sight was a great way to waste ammo. It's basically for ineffective long-range damage.
The aiming does feel jerkier. When you rotate the stick, it translates to a square or diamond rotation on screen. This is how it was in Uncharted 3, pre-patch.
However, you get a pistol later on that seems to have pretty smooth aiming. So, I don't quite understand what's going on there. Maybe they were trying to pull an RE4 and have different weapons handle differently. Example: blacktail aims around a lot faster than red 9, which aims around faster than red 9 with stock (iirc).

Well the thing is, the big arena fights in EW1 were my favorite (gameplay) parts, because it felt so good, once you pumped some points into stamina, to just pop head shots.
In this one it's still fun, but due to the weird aiming, it's not as fluid.
And i don't think it's just to do with the enemies (i actually like how erratic they are, adds to the tension) because i just tried moving the cursor around (again, with both mouse and gamepad) just aiming at static things in the scenery (lamps, objects, etc) just to test it out, and it feels off.
The mouse feels like it moves in small micro-increments, rather than one smooth motion (which makes me blame micro stuttering) while the gamepad feels like it has some acceleration going on, so that when i stop moving the thumb stick, it retains some inertia, and over steers, past the target.
Hard to describe, but it makes the whole thing just feel not as responsive.
Not enough to break the game, though i also have yet to face any intense firefight, with some seriously bad odds, like i expect late game to throw at me.
That'll be the true test.
Also, if the Predator skill worked as intended, i wouldn't worry AS much.
Hopefully it's something they can patch, the game is pretty glitchy in general, so i expect them to be working on something.
I reached Chapter 4 last night and Im having trouble against those crawling enemies. It takes me a shock bolt and 3 sniper rounds to kill them. Thats way too many resources. Whats the best way to deal with these guys? Also, does this game not have jars of gel to be found in the levels? So far Ive gotten all my gel from corpses.
Anima/Ghost Lady's mission in chapter 7,
will she continuously haunt me like in chapter 3? I suspect that is the case, which is why I'm thinking of putting it off until the end of the chapter.
2) Is there a way to see stats for weapons in the same category? Say I want to compare the reload time/RoF/damage of two pistols/shotguns. How do I do that? (I want to know if the second shotgun is a complete upgrade over the sawed-off, or if it's a trade off for more damage long range, and less damage overall/close range.)

edit 3) Does upgrading the shotgun's damage apply to each pellet? The damage increase seems pretty small compared to the other weapons.
1. Yes she will, I actually had her trap me in the storeroom building where you get the second shotgun and it was one of the most tense moments in my playthrough.
2. I don't think there's any way in-game to compare stats. Definitely upgrade to the second shotgun from the sawed-off though.

already trapped me in the storeroom before I initiated her ch 7 quest (thinking it's scripted), but she hasn't turned up anywhere else yet
. Good to know - I'll solely rock the second shotgun from now on!
Weird that there's no visible stats for anything else than the base weapons, nor any way to check a gun's damage. I think that was in EW1? Maybe I don't remember correctly. Anyway, thanks again! :]
Chapter 3 in the original game was so damn good. Which is part of the reason why I always remind people I was absolutely loving the first game until Chapter 6 when I'm saying how much I'm enjoying this one, who knows what my final thoughts will be.
Still, I really want to replay it on PC when I need a break from this one. So put me in the "why not both?" camp when it comes to 1 vs 2.
The game refuses to use more than 85% of your GPU, for some reason, so it's really disappointing for people who are close to running it at 60fps but not quite there.
Personally, while it does bother me, I'm playing it on Ultra at a locked 30fps, so it's still better than my other option, which was the regular PS4, so I'm fine with it.
For that specific encounter I used explosive bolts with the oil drums, but still had to use a few pistol and shotgun rounds. They're crazy, and I'm glad the game let me completely juke them at the Pit Stop (though it seems a bit silly)
So this may have been answered a lot already, but I feel like a good Halloween game. I haven't played Resident Evil 7 yet and I didn't enjoy Evil Within 1 as much as I'd hope (e.g. the story didn't resonate with me). However, for those playing this game, how are you finding this game in comparison to Resident Evil 7? Should I play RE7 instead if I can only play one game until Halloween?
What about compared to Evil Within 1? Anyone here didn't enjoy Evil Within 1 and ended up loving Evil Within 2? What made the difference? Anyone here loved Evil Within 1 and ended up not liking Evil Within 2? Why?

Mmm now that MC score is starting to get a bit lower than I think it should be, sure the game's not perfect but in terms of general consistency it is lightyears ahead of the first one, which has a 75 I believe.
Sure, review standards change over time, but still. Seeing them pretty much side-by-side on MC does a disservice to the way that this game polished up a lot of the design problems in the first.
This game is much more fun that Resident Evil 6, definitely a well thought out game and polished too. People saying RE6 is GOTY in another thread should play this.
RE6 has well-documented problems but I thought the combat mechanics there were astronomically better than both Evil Within games, I don't even think there's a real comparison.
I've always liked RE6 though, it's one of my favorite entries in that franchise.

Stealth and gunplay is fun, graphics are good enough. It also seems like a well-thought out game design wise - you can see it's a speedrunners delight. Finding exactly the right stuff to craft to have enough to kill and taking the right routes etc. That's not to say other games also have this though.

Several strategies depending on how upgraded in damage output your weapons are.
When they're unaware of you a headshot from a handgun will floor them. Then run up and 1 or 2 shotguns to the head. Handgun bullets aren't expensive to make, so you can substitute a second shotgun headshot for more handgun shots.
If it fails, run away and reset their unaware state.
RE7 would be great if it didn't have molded as the main goons you disposed. God they were such a lame enemy, sure zombies aren't anything too crazy but I'd take those over the molded anyday. The Bakers were cool though. (Well at least the mother and father of the group)
I have just enough gel for Predator, I primarily play Stealth right now, I should just go ahead and get it right? I feel as if it only makes sense but I have barely upgraded anything else.
I have 2 locker keys I have not used yet. IIRC in the first game if you opened a locker and did not use whatever was there, it stays until you do use it. Just want to make sure that is the case right now as I am maxed out on everything and do not want to waste a key if you have to use whatever you find right away.
Still on Chapter 3 BTW. I feel as if I need to do every single thing there is to do here, so I am taking my time.
I especially enjoyed going into that one house on Cedar Ave
, going back to Beacon, and the letterbox appearing as a nod to the old game.

Are you looking for something that is scary first and foremost? If so then RE7 by a mile, especially the first half of that game.
However if you are like me and a big wimp when it comes to horror (a game like Outlast would put me in the asylum) but like horror themed environments then EW2 is probably a better choice. The Evil Within 2 will join the first game, RE 1-4, and Alan Wake on my list of games that I regularly return to at this time of year.

Consensus seems to be that Predator is either bugged or nerfed to the point of being useless. So I wouldn't take that unless Bethesda addresses it in a patch.

I'm playing on PS4, Nightmare difficulty, and predator has been incredibly useful for me. It's about the only thing I used to take out enemies through the entirety of chapter 3. I haven't had any issues with it at all.
Yeah what? Predator works fine and is a great skill. I think people just aren't reading the tooltips that explain how to use it.
Keep in mind you need the crosshair to be actually on an enemy for the red marker to pop up indicating that you can predator them. It might help to turn on the center dot in options.
I rented the game since I hated the first one and wanted to give a chance to its sequel.
It's still bad.
I reached Chapter 7 and the game feels very disconnected. In the first one, at least the narrative and fucked up scenarios kinda made sense. Now it just feels like a mess.
At first I kinda enjoyed the open-world structure of entering houses and being rewarded for doing so with nice little stories. Exploring Union felt great with a sense of dread as you were surrounded by monsters. Unfortunately, you quickly become overpowered (playing on Survival here), meaning stealth is not worth it. I know you can get stealth kills, but you can achieve the same thing with a shotgun or pistol.
The controls are especially bad this time around. Aiming, like some posters have written, feels clunky. Running animation is awful. Many times, I felt I died because of the poor controls rather than lack of preparation/skill.
I also feel the encounters are rather poorly designed. Whilst in TEW1 it felt genuine IMO, full of tension and fear of what's next. In this game, I kinda don't care. Only monster I feel is properly designed is the invincible maiden, not sure how to call her.
Technically speaking, the game has a lot of problems, one of them being texture pop-in, something I absolutely hate. There are a lot of graphical glitches and textures clipping through models etc. Although I must say the sound/music has been pretty stellar so far.
I'm a couple hours in, but feel this is a solid 7. The first half of TEW1 is definitely better and more memorable. Another problem with TEW2 is its westernization, I feel like Mobius agents and the whole 'I am inside a simulation' break the atmosphere, same with its level design and encounter design. RE4 is still a masterpiece because even the bigger levels don't feel disconnected and are full of surprises, something I can't say is true with TEW2. There are too many unexplorable houses, invisible walls, etc. More importantly, it just feels like a chore to reach point A to point B rather than being something fun.

Just finished the game. Have to say, this game's utterly fantastic and such a joy to play through. Sure, it's a huuuge departure from the first game, and not all changes are successful, but it was captivating enough for me to plow ~22 hours on it quickly (on Survivor difficulty). 9/10
Some bullet points:
+ Excellent open world approach to gameplay.
+ The monster designs are generally very nice.
+ Great graphics (that perform beautifully) and amazing sound effects, good lord. The weapons feel punchy as fuck.
+ The cutscene direction (camera movements etc.) is top notch, never expected it coming from the first game.
+ They nailed the ending. I'm sick and tired of games that don't stick the landing, but here it's excellent. (spoilers)
The final boss visual and gameplay design is fantastic, and the surprisingly cheery ending cutscenes, and the last couple of areas, were great.
+ Much clearer plot (despite it being quite simple) compared to the first game which is borderline incomprehensible.
+ A lot of content for the money! Surprisingly lengthy game, especially with the generally excellent and rewarding side-quests.
+ Really good callbacks to the first game.
- The crazy psychotic environments and the constant (gameplay) shifting from the first game are gone, which made me a bit sad.
- A lot of time was spent in the Marrows, which is too boring of an environment. Once again, I really miss some of the utter craziness from the first game.
- The enemy variation is unfortunately lacking. What's there is good, but they should've done more. It says a lot when (major spoilers)
they bring back 3 of the bosses from the previous game, and that fact makes you super-happy for variation's sake.
- Some of the combat encounters are less imaginative than I would've hoped. Now that the environments are much bigger than in the previous game, they didn't bother as much to create good enemy placements etc. Many enemies are just dumped in groups randomly around the maps.
- Too janky and spazzy character animations when ducking for cover, jumping obstacles, aiming etc. They should've put way more effort into this.
- The VA is generic. Neither good nor bad, which stands out compared to the awesome cutscenes.

copied a lot of things from inception towards the end? The soundtrack where Seb goes to his family house and the constant switch from kidman's shootout to Seb's family is so familiar to inception's final act

They're really well made, it's especially impressive in the side quests and optional events, some of the cutscenes are main story worthy, which is definitely not something I'd expect out of this gameplay structure. If anything, I was expecting more of that awkward conversation camera when you first talk to O'Neil (or whatever his name is).
Ch. 7, the second hub, is fantastic — probably one of the most enjoyable survival horror experiences around. Several things I love:
The bit where the Guardian jumps down from the roof at the gas station after listening to the resonance of the guy who gathered the body parts and torched them to prevent them from assembling into the Guardian; the surprise ambush by the Guardian in the back alley where you retrieve the storage shed key; having to sneak past the Guardian to reach the sit-down restaurant where you find one of Stefano's artworks — watching it patrol outside is creepy; the way the storage shed traps you and forces you to encounter the Animus ghost, but it's a fakeout... only for the gassy creature outside to come wandering in; the encounter with the Animus ghost at the diner, sneaking around the counter and kitchen, running down the hall into Beacon Mental Hospital, and then using the mirror's reflection in each room to deduce the correct way out, while avoiding the ghost at the end
... It's all so good, and I feel on edge the whole time, which is exhilarating. Also the visual with the
camera eye in the sky and its tentacles blocking the road
continues to be a wonderful bit of iconography. This game, man!
