Piscatella: In the US, PS5 is now trending 9% above PS4; XBS trails behind XBO by 11%

This console gen is pretty much a wash for Xbox and I think they are waiting for the start of the new one.

Next year they are suppose to release more big first party games but I doubt that will help at this point.
Wrong. They’re trying to get out. The next console Gen in their perfect world is a streaming stick. Or a smart tv app. It’s been leaked that if they don’t hit a certain game pass subscriber threshold (which they very likely probably won’t) by like 2027 or whatever, they’ll fold out of the console business all together

Yeah, but that was part of Microsoft's strategy to paint an extremely dire picture in front of a federal judge in the FTC case. And they said they would leave the gaming business entirely, not just consoles. I don't buy any of that, frankly.

"I can fairly safely say that if we do not make more progress than this off of console, we would exit the gaming business. If this were the outcome, we would — I don’t believe we’d still be in the business."

Doing worse than the Xbox One three years into the generation is a disaster.

Price cut + heavy bundling might be the best way out. Not to mention more aggressive deals for content.

Gap will only widen this Christmas after the Spiderman bundle starts doing the work.
Lol there's no easy way out according to Tepper.

I think at this point its beyond an uphill battle for MS.

I remember getting into a mini debate with someone about me saying MS had an uphill battle and Sony didnt.

Data seems to back me up.

I guess its almost time to roll out the "they will turn things around next gen".

PS5 being 9% ahead of PS4 is low imo, should be higher, but PS4 is a damn machine.

But how in hell Xbox can be 11% lower than Xbox One since Xbox One launch was a total disaster?

Pretty impressive that PS5 was able to catch and surpass the PS4 just about at the halfway point of this console gen despite having to play catch up from the pandemic and supply shortages in the beginning.

Now that that’s all sorted out and behind us we’ll see how much further it continues to pull away from the PS4.

Only because you're ignoring the impact of the pandemic.

Not only did it slow PS5 sales, but it increased XBS sales as people who couldn't get a PS5 elected to buy an XBS. We know this because as soon as the PS5 was readily available we saw a sharp decrease in XBS sales.

The reality is that if there were no pandemic, XBS would likely have been closer to 25% down if not more.

PS5 will probably struggle next year to a degree as they have a really weak year. So unless the price drops, the PS5 Pro is a massive hit, or GTA6 launches on PS5, I'm expecting a down year.

Sony will announce its annual forecast in April and we'll see if they anticipate "another" 25 million units in 2024.

How is this possible when PS5 supplies started off so scarce?
Like I was telling the person that I had the debate with, MS never really took advantage of PS5 low stock situation. Barely selling more than your competitor thats having low stock was always a bad sign.

Maybe they just couldnt, but whatever the case they missed a golden opportunity. Once Sony got PS5 stock sorted out....its been game over ever since.

Covid and there is a PS5 sku thats $100 more expensive than the base PS4. Hell, the PS4 Slim was $299.

Those 2 things alone tell me its doing a damn good job having any increase, never mind 9%.

Still pretty much nothing really impressive omg next gen only can do on either system which is so sad. I know alot of people still on thier ps4/xbox one still.

I know people love shitting on Don Matrick but under his leadership Xboxone started out with a ton of exclusives that all dried up under Phil. No buying of publishers. Just games.

Bring back the DON to right this ship!

Microsoft should probably advertise their console at some point..
I cant even remember the last time I saw an Xbox commercial.

Was there even Starfield commercials? I don't remember seeing any.

I think the last commercial I saw that featured Xbox was like... Back4Blood. No shit.
They are, I saw this commercial the other day.

For me this is what's most impressive about the PS5 to date.

Just imagine the numbers if we didn't have those supply shortages and the pandemic to deal with in the beginning of this gen.

Not good but it seems like Ms just wants you part of gamepass ecosystem if you have a Xbox console or not. And weren’t they second in revenue per the reports that came out yesterday?

1. What year is it? This sounds exactly like the narrative being pushed 1 year into the XB1 gen. I'm talking verbatim.

2. Have you seen the shift/loss in market share, mindshare, and momentum in XB's strongest territory... While we wait for them to get their shit right?

Damn... If they're doing this poorly in their only relevant market I can't imagine how bad things are in Europe. Their market-share I'm most countries there is probably in the low single digits.

I'm a total moron with no business background whatsoever, but even I can recognise that if you want people to buy something you need to give them a reason to do so.

Microsoft's position with the Series line seems to be that you can play their library on PCs and phones, and said library overwhelmingly consists of third party games that can be found on their competitor's system - the one with the exclusives that people actually give a shit about. Oh, but here's our subscription service with our poorly rated system exclusives, plus a bunch of indie bullshit, old games, and failed games like Gotham Knights. Please understand.

I mean, no shit. Of course nobody's buying the fucking thing.

I really don't see how he's still employed. Everything he does makes the company look bad.

Greenberg and co loved nothing more than to do this type of shit during the 360 era.

I remember on Neogaf these kinds of posts from Greenberg sparked a lot of console warring on that platform.

EDIT: Well yeah now all the shit flinging from Greenberg makes sense

Former Xbox executive says Microsoft “encouraged” console wars in 360 era

How so? As far as we know they delayed multiple 2023 games internally into 2024, which was the reason for 2023 being so barren of first party releases (honestly, they chose the best year possible to have a shitty year as to avoid getting cannibalized by [and cannibalizing] third parties releases).

2024 is gearing to be one of the better years for PS exclusives in a while, we just don't know that's coming yet.

somehow Xbox’s leadership keeps failing upward 🤷🏼‍♂️
this is extremely common in all large corporate environments and is not special to MS or gaming.

unless a senior leader does something very egregious that's publicly fireable (eg me too stuff) or does actual damage to the brand they just get sent to a corner office to ride out their vesting period or promoted.

phil hasn't done a "we have a product for gamers without internet, it's called Xbox 360" moment yet so he's still there.

xbox's biggest problem as this point is still exclusives. the only IP they have that's actually worth a damn is Forza (Horizon). Halo got ruined by gross incompetence at 343, no one really gives a shit about Gears anymore, one of the most anticipated games they showed at launch (Hellblade II) still isn't out 3 years later, and they may as well not exist to Japanese developers. Not to mention that the console horsepower king regularly gets beat in performance by PS5 in multiplats.

What time is it?
With all the acquisitions they've made, I doubt they'll do it but it's time to pull the plug on the Xbox brand and become a 3rd party publisher. Lagging behind the disaster that was the XBone is something else.

For me, Xbox is a subscription service on my PC (which is awesome).
I don't have a Xbox, and have no need for one, but still their offerings/subscription is a lot more used than my playstation 5, which have only been a FF16-player this year.

i'm obviously in a minority here, but the Playstation stuff have been pretty disapointing since the release of PS5. Only Demon's Souls and Returnal have been must-haves for me, and not much concrete to look forward to. Hopefully they'll have some awesome announcements soon, which is not part of that GAAS shit.

They need a constant stream of blockbusters if they want to rebuild the brand. The games need to actually hit though, not like Starfield which was overhyped. They need a 90+ game releasing every other month for a good 1-2 yr stretch just to be in the conversation. Right now Playstation is to gaming what Apple is to phones and that's just reality. Not a fan but, it is what it is.
