Metroid Prime bored me to tears. And I was so excited to finally give it a spin after buying the Trilogy edition :/

You can say that about most games held in high regards when they came out but you would attempt to play long after that. You need to enjoy them as historical experience and not judge them with the same metrics you would judge things released today. Let's face it, if a game isn't fun, it's not because it evolved past fun; it's because you changed man...

Archie (the comic) is still around? I remember reading it as a kid back in the 80s. Felt like every story was a rehash of the last one  I sort of liked the guy who always wore a crown and constantly craved hamburgers.

Yeah, Archie is still around. Though I don't know how many NEW stories they produce per year. I went and bought a volume since I was reading up on old comics I used to enjoy, and found they were quite boring.

UT2K4 > UT99
Blizzard has sucked hard since WoW was released.
I cannot stand sandbox games.
Open world RPGs bore me pretty easily.
I had a ton of fun playing Phantasy Star 3 multiple times!
Final Fantasy 9 is crap.
Blighttown is perfectly playable.
Lost Izalith, Tomb of the Giants and Crystal Caverns are fine the way they are!
Japanese developers still make the best games.
Monster Hunter is fine without lock-on targetting.
I love SMT franchise but Devil Survivor is boring with shitty characters. ( You suck Yoohoo! )
Persona 2 > Persona 4 > Persona 3 + Fes ( still haven't finished P1 so can't comment yet )

I don't really like anything first-party from Nintendo besides the occasional Mario game, Donkey Kong Country and Wave Race 64. That's about it. Always felt Nintendo was way overrated.

I'd take Sonic 1-3&K over any Mario game, any day.

Funny how you'd preface a Nintendo = overrated comment by praising one of their most overhyped. DKC was overhyped flash over substance. Sonic just can't hold a candle to Mario because of the screen's inability to keep up with Sonic (a malady shared with DKC, incidentally enough).

Survival Horror would be better without monsters.

Agreed. But there is not that much horror... and people are too smart to be able to outrun, so you might as well fight back/shoot back and then it turns into a shooter. Unless you play as a young kid surviving post apocalypse from groups of marauders.
that might be kind of cool...

Oh oh, I thought I didn't have any controversial opinions to put up, but I do!

CRYSTAL BEARERS is totally awesome and I will keep singing its praises until the day I die.

This is a strange one. Why do you care about the influence a game had on 'stupid developers'? Did you plan to buy the games stupid developers make?

I'm pretty sure you know what I mean, smartass. I planned to buy FPSs since I like the genre, and unfortunately, so many of them released after Halo had to have vehicles that controlled the same way, regenerating health/shields, a restriction on the number of weapons that could be carried at once, etc.

And before someone points out the games that each did one of these things before Halo, spare me. It's no coincidence that these design choices became popular after the mega-success of Halo, and it sucks for fans of... well, anything but those design choices in FPSs.

the world ends with you sucked, and has made me wary of following gaf's suggestions when choosing a game to buy

I agree with this, and some have gotten better this gen than the previous. Chiefly SegaSammy is definitely better this gen than SegaSammy last gen (as in not counting Sega Corp.).

Also Gears of War is terrible.

I agree with everything in this post, I also think a lot of people play games for silly reasons.

I haven't played it yet because I'm just a pussy but does Amnesia: Dark Descent have an actual monster?

Yes, but there is no way to defeat them so you are forced to hide/run away from them which is 1000x more effective than shooting them or having no enemies at all.

And they aren't dumb either. If they see you run into a room and close the door they will bash the door down. It's the worst :(

Oh, I forgot another: Shadow of the Collosus has a shitty ending that ruins the game's narrative for the sake of tying it to Ico. The ending makes no sense at all and is an embarrassing mis-step in an otherwise great game.

I disagree with this. And I am far from a hardcore PC gamer, the whole "master race" thing is obnoxious, however, I feel a far greater correlation from my movement to in-game actions, which is empowering. Feeling any amount of auto-aim is really unpleasant for me, it feels like cheating, as if the game doesn't trust me to play it correctly.
I see what you're saying, but for me it's balanced out by the movement of the character. Left joystick just gives you a greater degree of movement when compared to WASD.

Survival Horror would be better without monsters.

To add to this: Amnesia is better than pretty much every resident evil, fatal frame, etc games combined.

Wow. First actual Crystal Bearers fan I've ever seen.

DKC was great (and certainly leagues better than Super Mario World IMO), besides that horrible minekart level. Never played the sequels much, sadly. And the only time the screen doesn't keep up with Sonic is in Chemical Plant Zone AFAIK.

The best thing about video games isn't playing them, it's telling the internet how much I hate them.

This guy gets it.

Ico is terrible.

Wind Waker is a bad misstep.

Operation Darkness is decent.

The new NFL Blitz is different but still a good game.

Gothic 4/Risen/Divinity 2 are much more fun than Skyrim.

Qualifying moral decisions is stupid (possibly a communal opinion). Stealing should go unpunished in all games. Curious looting >>> moral repercussions.

Consoles is killing PC gaming with crappy ports.

Is it though? I'm of the impression that even excluding casual/Facebook games, PC gaming is in a much healthier state than it has been at any time in basically the last decade. And that's largely due to the wealth of console ports we get. Now, if you want to talk about PC exclusives or the stagnation of PC game assets/graphics that would be another story.

For the cost of two jobs, you can get a PS3 and a Sony 3D TV that lets two people use the same TV at the same time. Problem solved. If you get 5 more jobs then you can connect a Gaming PC and then play games you play any games you own (FROM ANY PLATFORM) the physical copy of or downloaded on Steam. You don't have to be mobile to enjoy the best of all gaming.... you just have to work hard and since hard work it its own reward and you get to play games, it's like having your cake and eating it too.

That's great and all, but you missed the part about handheld-only games.

PC gaming is healthier, the fact that consoles have held PCs back graphically has made the barrier to entry much cheaper than in the past, comparatively. It's the only reason me and my friend switched to PC gaming.

I liked Dragon Age II. I didn't think it was as good as Origins, but I didn't find it to be a bad game.

I buy most of my multi-platform games of consoles, despite having a PC that is more than capable of running the PC version. I simply find consoles to be my preferred platform despite the fact that they are objectively inferior.

Yeah I know, it's just me. ;.;

But the game is quite fun. But how could a game that allows you to fling a Bomb into other Bombs that set of an explosion that kills everything in sight be bad?

The game looks pretty damn good. The art direction is nice.

I haven't played the game but it seemed like not a person in the world gave a crap about the it when it came out.

My controversial opinion.

Halo 1 was a complete fluke...

The reason? Every halo campaign since has been an over-hyped joke. Bungie has never been able to replicate, with next to unlimited resource and profile, what they created in a hurry to get Halo ready for the Xbox launch.

I have high hopes for 343...

Yeah, and there were a lot of people disappointed that it was nothing like the original games (which I can understand since it was a relatively long going series. It got a lot of 5/10s...) The camera was bad and I actually rage quit in the first hour because it was that bad. But I went back in and got used to it, and once you really know how the battle system works it's pretty fun to play too. There is a lot to explore as well, and aside from a few times there isn't too much pull to continue with the main quest so you can just muck around in the world for awhile (which is really the best part.)

I wasn't being a smartass, I really don't see your point. Bad developers make bad retreads, but most people just wouldn't seek to buy those retreads. There actually aren't that many 'Halo clones' I can think, despite it's huge popularity. Many people took things from Halo, but I think for the better personally.

Game design is like any form of product design, the design that appeases the greatest number is the most effective.

I think Halo was the first FPS to really work very well on a gamepad, and it was designed to do so, those changes it bought are tied to that. It seems really the issue you have is more the fact FPSs have migrated to leading on a gamepad. That's also probably Halo's fault though thinking about it.

I had a similar experience with the crystal chronicle games. At first I thought they were very shallow Diablo clones, but I went back and got pretty hooked. Incidentally, all my favorite FF games are the spin-offs so I think I will give this a try now.

My dream survival horror title is actually a war game. You and possibly squad mates are stuck in enemy territory or recently withdrawn by forces and must deal with insurgents, booby traps, snipers (realistic, or at least realism based instead of shooters), and so forth.

You don't want to go in like a shooter because you don't want to draw attention to yourself in such an environment when the mission is to simply get out alive.

+1 fan of Crystal Bearers. Kind of amazing how coherent it is.

I'm not the only one! ;.;

It's definitely a game you have to savor, rather than rush through. It's still not something I can guarantee everyone would love, but I do wish people gave it more of a chance.

Games are probably the most subjective entertainment medium there is, so why in the world are people so damned concerned about "reaching consensus"? So many reviewers and posters are so wrong-headed about "good" games vs. "bad" games that the vast majority of games criticism (and I mean everywhere, including Neogaf) is just pure rubbish. People get so wrapped up in trying to justify their individual experience as universial to how everyone should percieve a game that the majority of reviews just aren't worth much.

That is why I listen to podcasts and read OTs for people's experience through the game instead of listening to whether people think it is good or not. If someone describes a gameplay experience that sounds compelling to me, I will play it.

I don't care for Uncharted, and would rather have Naughty Dog make Jak games.

I think Kid Icarus is a pretty worthless property, and that Uprising looks like trash compared to the talent behind it.

I don't like FPS games, and having a game in first person makes me want to avoid them.

I think SCEA is the worst branch of SCE.

Western RPGs have too many glitches, and I'd much rather they narrow down their scope to better develop their games.

A lot of Western RPGs also have an ugly very samey art style.

Zelda utterly bores me, and while I see the appeal and appreciate some of the things the franchise has done for gaming overall, I don't think it should be held to the prestige it currently has.

Microsoft's entire first party/second party lineup is worthless.

Sony Japan is heavily under appreciated.
