ANCEL STILL CRYING Rayman Origins $19.99 at Toys R Us #bomba

The general perception amongst gamers seems to be that this type of game is simple not worth paying full price for. Which is crazy because it is so fun and has so much heart and soul to it. I'm still playing it and keep coming back to it.

I realize that it's obnoxious, but how much could it possibly have cost them to make this game? from what I can tell it's earthworm jim on steroids. and I can play earthworm jim without spending 60 bucks.

The same could be said for Halo, CoD, Gears of War, Madden or any unoriginal popular franchise. Everything is something else on steroids, yet they get to charge the full $60 uncontested.

And we have no idea (or at least I don't) how much it cost to make the game and the tools to make the game.

Could you have played Earthworm Jim without spending 60 bucks when it first came out? Back in the day it would have cost the same as any other big title.

Does anyone think this game would have sold more if it were a new IP? I don't care for Rayman as a character, but this game is great.

If everybody mentioned in the looooooong ending credits got paid, then the game must have cost a lot of money. Which may be part of the problem with recent games, actually.
It is a problem. You have a game on XBLA that took a core team of 6 but the credits list is 10 minutes long with titles I know had nothing to do with actually creating the game. I know some of them are important but I doubt all of them were absutley vital.

Release it where it belongs Ubi.

Where? On digital download services (where it already is)? On every console known to man (everything except PSP)? The only platform it's not available for is PC, a traditionally non-platform-friendly system. Do you want it on Steam or something?

Yeah, I think you just answered your own question. Good deducing!

I doubt it. New IPs are a hard sell these days.

I agree, but Rayman is such an oddball that I thought he would have gone to way of Bubsy a long time ago.

I suppose some recognition is better than no recognition, but with Rayman, I'm not so sure.

I's smart, yuh-huh.

Why does it belong on Steam, though? It's a genre that doesn't traditionally do very well on PC. Are the other Raymans on Steam? I would never think to play a platformer on the PC for some reason.

Platformers do great on Steam. That's like half the indie market right there.

EJ is ancient though. I'll pay 60 for a game that blows my mind. "oh that looks fun" usually doesn't even get me out of bed until it's close to 10 or 15. it's one reason why i buy on steam so much because I know a greater percentage of my money goes to the game-makers rather than the skim.

This game is too simplistic

Simplistic in controls, visuals or the actual platforming?

controls I might give you (you have jump and run and some stick motions), but definitely not visuals and the platforming itself is anything from simplistic. It's streamlined at points, but it's difficult as hell the further you get into the game. Speed runs require perfect button presses and the chase sequences are maddening with how perfect you need to be.

This game is absolutely amazing and I'm not sure what you mean by simplistic.

Just started this the other day. I'm liking it so far. The graphics and animation are wonderful. Reminds me of old school 2D mario games.

It really should have just been an XBLA/PSN game.
I'm glad it wasn't though, since I would have likely never played it if that were the case (Wii version here), and that would have been disappointing since it was one of my favorite games from last year, so I'm glad Ubisoft went the route they did.

Hey has anyone said anything about how this game should have been a downloadable game yet? Because that would probably open this whole conversation wide open.

I don't know if it would have done better, but I certainly would have been more interested in hearing about a new IP. I heard Rayman and all interest in the game was instantly gone. I still haven't bit on the $20 sales, even though everybody tells me it is amazing.

I don't understand how anyone could dislike Rayman. At worst I'd say he's inoffensive.

Inoffensive is a great description. I don't actively hate Rayman. I just don't care about it.
That's a silly reason to skip the game though (in my opinion).

He's an awfully designed character. Uninspired and uninteresting. I think that's enough to dislike him.
Uninteresting? He has no arms or legs!

Uninspired? I think this word gets thrown around to the point where it has lost all meaning. The lead character of Fracture, I would say, is uninspired:

This quirky little guy though? I don't see it.

He's wearing a hoodie, guys. He's like Poochie, but as a video game mascot. Combed front hair, hooded sweatshirt. Ugh. Terrible, MOR, Focus Grouped pap.

Nah way man. There's an earnestness in Rayman I think you're just not seeing. I don't think he could be any farther from a cynical focus group type situation.

I see it, and agree. It's his outer self that's completely derivative. His "personality" (smile, etc) is very endearing. Visually (clothing, hair, etc) he is pure drivel.

Most of the design elements from Rayman are inherited from its original episode (and usually linked to gameplay elements) : split hair to hover, unconnected limbs to throw fists... and the hood is only an updated scarf.
While it's been modernized, it's far from being a generic character that a focus group would come to.

Why would someone who lives in an enchanted kingdom wear a hooded sweatshirt?

What is this, Dogma?

Anyway, this is all subjective. I'm glad other people find him totally cool looking. I think he's lame as hell.

I think it's meant to be surreal, the juxtaposition of fantasy and reality.

I can accept that you don't like him, I'm just not convinced by your explanation of why ('uninteresting' and 'uninspired'.) That's all.

Got my copy from TRU today. Totally worth $20. Coming from a guy that plays 60% fps, this game puts a constant smile on my face.

Man, not sure how I missed this before, but im picking this up for this price, no questions asked. I played the demo and loved it, so Im excited.. I think this will be the first game I have actually bought since september.

Hm.. You know how I said no questions asked? I lied. How long is the game? Im picking it up regardless, Im just curious.
