Guild Wars 2 News And Information Thread [Large Beta Weekends In March/April]

As I understand it, Anet did an interview with a fansite about PVP. The fansite said they would have exclusive screens on Friday. The fans translated that into "huge blogpost from Arenanet unveiling PvP".

LOL usual stuff! but are those screens already available?

I'm tired of news. Every news bump is a kick in the nuts. Give us the beta or at least a list of people I have to kill to get in.

I wouldn't expect much today. It kind of sounds like we won't even get the screens.

Sorry for the delay, but some WvWvW stuff needed to be cut out (ArenaNet want's to be able to show you in a future post) and of course there was a snow storm that slowed the whole process down.

Anyways, it's been a lot of work, now we want to know your thoughts on the article and what you'd like to see in some PvP screenshots!

I think you're misreading that. I take it to mean there was more info about WvWvW in the interview, but he didn't want to post it because ANet wanted exclusive info in the blog post not told elsewhere. I think there will be a blog today.

What makes you think that? Not trying to be confrontational, just curious.

Well he made that post after he posted the interview. Also, this line:

"but some WvWvW stuff needed to be cut out "

leads me to believe that he's referring to things that were in the interview, but he kept them out because he didn't want to spill all the beans so that ANet will have something new to tell us in the blog. Also, I really don't think this guy has any idea if the blog is or isn't canceled for today if it was even going up today or not to begin with. We just have to wait and see.

Man, this game looks amazing. Can't wait to be able to DODGE in an MMO!

Question is, can I use a 360 controller on PC? Wonder if it would even work well or not...

You can certainly use a 360 controller for the PC, but whether it would be viable for GW2 or not remains to be seen.

You could probably figure out a way to control your character with a controller but there would definitely be issues when it comes to the HUD/UI. One way to fix it would be button/analog combinations (IE. Hold RB and press the left stick in X direction) or something. Or maybe support for the 360 Controller + the Messenger Pad attachment. MMO UIs don't really work well with controllers unless they are designed with them in mind.

a controller doesn't have nearly enough buttons to navigate the UI. Nor would you have as good control over your movement or targeting.

hopefully they implement a good pvp reward system.
sadly - the old /fame system kept me playing for soooo long (yay for r10 ;) )

has there been any word if they make something equivalent to HoH?
personally i think it was a great system. if the grouping didnt take so much time ...

Agreed, while playing at Gamescom The keyboard and mouse felt flawless but it still had a decent learning curve to get dodging down. Might be much more difficult with a controller.

I think they're planning on implementing the HoM in some form, whether that's at launch or not remains to be seen.

Also, for those unaware GW2 will have a Pokemon-esque battle system called Polymock. Polymock was created by Colin Johanson(lead content designer for GW2) as a pet project in GW1 and was put into the game when EOTN came out in 2007. They intend to bring it back for GW2 with better design, they've said that the minipets you collect will likely be usable as playable pieces.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Polymock

Polymock is a minigame in Guild Wars Eye of the North to earn reputation with the Asura. You play against the AI with three "pieces" that you select, each with a unique skill bar; the aim is to defeat your opponent by countering the "pieces" that it picks.

There are 27 different Polymock pieces (see list below), of which 18 are obtainable for players. Each time you pick one piece, you take the form of the corresponding creature. Polymock pieces resemble chess pieces when viewed in your inventory and appear to have a unique shape that is dependent upon the creature the piece is based upon. Each piece has its own set of skills, as shown by the table below. Polymock pieces must be registered before they can be used. See Denn in Rata Sum to register a piece.

Hmm...someone leaked a pic of the launcher. I like it, I think simplicity suits it best.

That is just...awesome! More and more features in this game. There's already tons of stuff to do.

BLAAAAAAARGH, I mean I knew that site wasn't going to have WvWvW screens to release first, but based on what he said it made me think ANet had given him screens to release after they released their WvWvW blog today. So much for that.

Well I know not to trust GWInsider again when it comes to exclusive media.

It's *almost* possible, but there's no room for jump unless you stick it on an analog 'click' which really wouldn't work. Unless you put your elite skill there, but I feel like that might lead to too many accidental uses.

Face Buttons (X, Y, Z, A): Hotbar 1, 2, 3, 4
Right Trigger: Dodge
Left Trigger: Shift Face Buttons to Hotbar 2: 6, 7, 8, 9
Right Bumper/R2: Healing Skill
Left Bumper/L2: Elite Skill

R Stick: Look / Change Target (Locked)
L Stick: Move

R3: Target Lock / Release

Meh, really just need one more action button, and chat would have to be voice only... Never gonna happen, but it is possible, at least. In fact, the limited hotbar of Guild Wars actually makes it the *ideal* MMO to go to a console.

Messy, but it would work.

Don't forget that 6 is the healing skill, so that doesn't need its own button. It's probably possible to come up with a controller mapping that would enable all abilities.

Edit: targeting aoes would still be problematic. Hm...

For dodging I don't think an analog stick would work since it requires a double tap of the movement keys to work. Though you'd need to be dedicate a button that you can reach comfortably with your left hand in order to dodge reliably. So say you dedicate L1/R1 or Left trigger/Left bumper, you'd be losing a modifier that is then crucial for skill usage. I don't know if it would work too well.

There's a dodge button too. C maybe but it's been a while.

Yeah, I had left off Hotkey 5 instead of Hotkey Six. And the whole discussion goes right out the window with that comment on AOE targeting.

So yeah, it's simply impossible to do without a precision input method.

Maybe on the WiiU, heh.

Got word a little after the workday that screens are delayed a bit. Should have by Monday.

FFS.... Not only did they say WvWvW screens and it turns out ArenaNet says they were never suppose to so they gave false hype so it turns into just pvp shots we're suppose to get, then after we are already let down the screens get delayed another 2+ days. Won't be surprised come Monday that they won't show any.

You're playing on your computer so you put down the controller and type onto the keyboard whatever you want to chat. You have to stop moving to chat when using kb/m anyway.

As for AOE targeting, it might just be my dislike of mouse control and lack of experience, but the amount of extra precision I'd get for setting up a shield or something doesn't really bother me much. No matter what, you're starting from a position and dragging a cursor. Hardcore players will care, but the masses that want to use controllers aren't the type to be aiming to be part of the number one PvP team anyway. Part of the issue will also depend on your profession.

The only thing that's keeping me from being gung-ho about using GW2 with a controller is the skills. Controllers prefer to group things in fours and twos, because of the face buttons and bumpers, but GW2 has a group of five skills for your weapon, one skill for healing, three utilities, and one elite skill. Too many odd numbers to make anything feel 100% natural from the get go.

I'd probably use Start/Select for the Healing/Elite skill buttons, if you're determined to make it work.

More directed at GW1 which iv been dreaming of playing with a controller for a long time now, more so today seeing how I just play for the hell of it, would be great to just sit back and fool around on a pad. For pvp I would still prefer a KB&M, but with PvE would totally use a controller.

I haven't played GW2 so I have no idea how the controls really feel, or play out but was thinking of...

Left Bumper + Face Buttons (X, Y, A, B): Hotbar 1, 2, 3, 4
Right Bumper + Face Buttons (X, Y, A, B): Hotbar 5, 7, 8, 9
A: Dodge
X: Interact
Y: Jump
B: Menu / Maybe Emotes?
Right Bumper/Tap: Healing Skill
Left Bumper/Tap: Elite Skill
Left Trigger: Target Nearest
Right Trigger: Select Called Target (call target when Locked)
R Stick: Look
L Stick: Move
R3: Target Lock / Release
L3: Map
D-Pad: Weapon Swaps
Back: Inventory
Start: Other Menu Selection

Eh what ever it's fun to ponder over, but if they did support this I would certainly use it.

Here is my controller layout, in case I want to play with one.

Rule 1: Give at how some skills are chargable, I'll asume that in the skill bar 1-5 there are always 2 skills that can be charged by keeping the button pressed.
Rule 2: Since I'm not very familiar with the x360 controler, and PC controlers have their buttons all over the place, I'll pinpoint the buttons on a sony controler.
Rule 3: If one skill is a targetable Aoe, then you have to press it once to go in target mode where you move the target with the right analog, and then again to fire.

skill 1&2: Square!
tap for skill 1, hold for 1 sec for skill 2. If one of the skills is chargable, it'll allways be in the holding possition.

skill 4&5: Triangle!
tap for skill 4, hold for 1 sec for skill 5. If one of the skills is chargable, it'll allways be in the holding possition.

skill 3: Square and Triangle at the same time!

Jump: Xbutton.

Swap weappons: L3

Interact with the invaroment or revive/stomp others: hold Circle or tap while standing still.

Dodge: tap circle and point the left stick to a direction.

Walk/Run around: Left analog

Look arround: Right analog

Use class specific skills (steal or change ellement): Hold R1 and press any of square, triangle, circle or X.

Use heal and utility skills (6-9): Hold L1 and press any of square, triangle, circle or X.

Use Elite skill: Hold L1 and press two of any square, triangle, circle or X simultaniously.

Lock on targets like Dark Souls: R3

Unused buttons for other possible uses: D-pad, R2, L2, Start, Select.

I just loaded the entire GW2 combat in 4 buttons, 2 triggers, and 2 analog sticks.
That doesn't mean that the game could run on consoles however... DC universe is a prime example that the interface won't be nearly as slick and responcive as it is on PC, and without a keyboard, chatting can be a nightmare.

I've honestly given up hope. I swear to god GW2 is an MMO player's Duke Nukem Forever.

I fail to see the comparison since the game hasn't even hit the 5 year mark in development and they show their game more than 95% of the industry. Then you have the whole 5 year standard MMO dev cycle.
