In honor of Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary, GAF Plays: Final Fantasy games

You have chosen excellent ones to beat thus far, and your decision to both replay IX and then move onto XII is also great.

I will say though that VI does not need a remake of any sort. It is nearly perfect as it is now. X was mediocre, though it may be worth playing with as a HD remake.

I would like to see them tweak the Esper system a bit, making it so that, for one, not everyone can learn (and subsequently spam) Ultima.

I'm now at the 2nd disc of FFIX. It has to be the best beginning to any RPG. I still love the rest of the game but there is definitely a dip in the pacing and storytelling later on. Its not bad but it goes from "I can't put this down" to "here is a good stopping point" to "maybe there is something better after this" to "okay guys time to wrap it up".

I was kind of down on the gambit system at first but after playing Dragon Age Origins and using the gambit like commands the idea grew on me. I know VI and to a lesser extent V are already really good but you only get a chance to play a game for the first time once so I want to give a 3DS remake a chance considering how good IV on DS was.

Last time, I had just gotten the earth crystal jobs, and was returning to see Doga.

When we enter, Doga teleports us into some cave.

rvHfvl.jpg

And apparently Doga and Une had a surprise for us when we got there!

GNI5Ol.jpg
moylIl.jpg

Doga can be tough, because he not only casts quake (over 1000 damage to each party member), he can also cast breakra which petrifies someone instantly. Une isn't really much of a danger, since all she can really do is cast a spell that reduces someone to 1 HP.

EU2fIl.jpg
3UZWgl.jpg
Fg6oEl.jpg

After the battle, they leave the keys to the tower and Eureka behind. Thanks, dudes.

XdbB2l.jpg

Let's go, indeed!

pxg7Nl.jpg

So now we returned to the place where we got the earth crystal jobs. Sooo many enemies in the final leg of the game are totally susceptible to either breakra or death, so the random battles are pretty much going to be pushovery.

ZE6jVl.jpg

On the other side of the ruins is the final save point in the game, a tiny little bit of world map just before the tower. Saveee!

w2bPil.jpg
d66RDl.jpg
f37c4l.jpg

Our first order of business in the tower is to open the way to Eureka, which is an optional dungeon that contains the ultimate weapons, as well as shops that sell the level 8 magic, extra copies of the summons, and the crystal equipment + shurikens. Plus you can get a ribbon in here. Let's do it!

TKljVl.jpg
Fowvll.jpg
lxbXql.jpg
LGf0tl.jpg

The first boss looks quite a lot like Hyne. He acts like him too, doing barrier change and such. There's no reason to use a scholar, though, because physical attacks work fantastically, as does bio since it's a non-elemental spell. Super, super easy fight. Moonring blade get!

C90pYl.jpg
eB4bAl.jpg
yBdnNl.jpg
KjBi3l.jpg

Kunoichi is also pretty much a pushover. She can paralyze people, but that's just about her only trick. Typical strategy of attack + bio works great here. Masamune get!

JJdNol.jpg
0NhrNl.jpg
DmBVKl.jpg
yasi3l.jpg

This guy just has really strong physical attacks that can even take my fighters down to low health in one shot. I just had to be a little careful, and came out on top. Excalibur, yay.

zQJIsl.jpg
2Ywkpl.jpg
QyyA6l.jpg
gnRRql.jpg
XMru0l.jpg

Next up is Scylla. Scylla is like the magical version of the last boss, in that she has one really big attack (flare) that does tons of damage, and that's just about her only trick. Elder staff! ...and more importantly, ninja and sage!

Now, in the DS version, sage is kinda gimpy. They have dramatically less MP, and cannot use high level magic at all. On Famicom here, sage can use every spell in the game - black, white, and summoning too. They also get a ton more MP. I imagine the reason why they did this was so that devout, magus and summoner wouldn't be obsoleted so quickly and so dramatically. But I like this way better. :)

As for ninjas, well, in the Famicom version, ninjas don't have a throw command, but they can equip every weapon and armor in the game. On DS, they can throw any weapon at enemies, but they have a much more limited equipment selection. To use shurikens on Famicom, you just equip them in the second slot and use them like you would arrows.

At this point in the Famicom version, there's no reason to use any job besides ninja and sage, because they are the ultimate physical and magical jobs. They can do everything every other job can do, all at once.

zLkycl.jpg
uCKEBl.jpg
Uoweyl.jpg
9LfAHl.jpg

After getting ninja and sage, I had to level up a couple of times to get to 40 so I could job change. I used the healing springs in the room just north of the Scylla room to heal up and do a little bit of grinding, then job changed to do this fight.

The reason why I did that is because this boss is a jerk. He casts quake almost every turn, and nobody but the healer can withstand more than two rounds of that. It's very possible to beat him right away, before even changing jobs, but it's a craps shoot. Considering how long it's been since I saved at this point, and how much progress I had made, I decided to raise my chances a bit. Post-job-change, I can do almost 2000 per turn with my attackers and with one of my sages casting flare (buyable from the room up north!).

So from here, there's just the real final dungeon left. However, I am considering going to get the most powerful summons before I do, just because I always fight them every time I play this, even if I don't use them much. Doesn't feel right not to. Could have done it way earlier, but it's going to be much easier now!

Forbidden Land Eureka...that was a pretty cool place when I first came across it. Also has some pretty good music.

Of course, the fun part was fighting all of the different bosses for the Ultimate Weapons.

And with the 1st cave music playing in the Ancient's Labyrinth, it's really a good sign of the Beginning of the End.

Kinda sucks you don't get Shaman/Devout sooner, since they would've been a lot more useful in the mid-game stage. (More so considering you get direct upgrades to Warrior and Fighter around that point.) For Shaman/Devout, you get them for like 2~3 dungeons and that's it.

Played some more Final Fantasy I (PSP).

When I last played my party full of Warriors was shamefully defeated by the Lich. So some more preparations were needed.

FoTNr.png

First I had to visit the inn in the nearest town and shop for some better armor. On the way back through the dungeon I also found myself a nice Coral Sword. Elemental damage? Sounds good. Water damage, for the Lich? Oh well, we'll see.

ULTmX.png
tlJgG.png
tP5fZ.png

The Coral Sword was at least a little bit stronger than my other swords, on the other hand my armor didn't improve much, because most of the damage came from his magic spells. But nevertheless (probably out of sheer luck) I managed to defeat him with two of my fighters still standing. Oh well, I just have to use some of my Phoenix Downs. Which Phoenix Downs? Sadly, I had none. So the long walk to the next town began.

5KZQ9.png
j0ZSS.png

On the way my third fighter died, too, because of some stupid enemy group that kept paralyzing me until he died. When I reached the town, I found out that there's actually no item shop here. So the journey continued to Crescent Lake. Heini4 fought bravely and on his final breath...

Finally! Crescent Lake! And an item shop, too! I immediately stocked up on potions and Phoenix Downs.

I might finish my PS3 play of FFIX and start up FFVI and FFV again. Don't have time for all of the series, but these are on my mind. Playing the opening of FFVI always reminds me of exactly what is missing in the atmosphere of modern FF titles

How's FFV on PSN? Never played it before, just bought it but haven't started. I know some of the FF games vary quite a bit in quality between versions.

Close to the SNES version, with load times and FMVs. GBA version has more content and a better translation, pretty much the definitive version.

I'm joining the fun! I'm currently playing FFIV for the first time. I just entered the
underworld, and i'm about to infiltrate the tower while Golbez is busy searching for the dark crystal
. I'm having a good time with the game, except for the fact that the characters are constantly leaving/joining my party. It kind of suck to not be able to know who you're gonna end up with for the next part of the game.

Yes, FF4 takes party musical chairs to a comical level. It'll never let up, so get used to it! :(

Don't have time to replay any of these, but this thread got me to thinking about the series. While I won't post any pics as not to spoil, I was thinking how amazing the ending to VI was. It's rare to beat a game and have an ending really give me a sense of satisfaction and closure, but this on did. VI is truly a classic and has one of the best, if not the best ending I've ever seen.

There is a pattern here. He got an attack off on me, but I (with the aid of BAHAMUT) still beat him in one round.

These bosses absolutely present a challenge when you fight them as early as you can, but as you can see, I've gone and ruined it by waiting until the end of the game. I'll head into the final dungeon tomorrow.

So I decided to join in on the fun yesterday. I will try to get through as many of the mainline Final Fantasy games as possible in 2012, but it will take me the whole year. I tend not to have a ton of gaming time these days.

Anyhow, Final Fantasy I PSP:

I decided to go with a warrior, monk, white mage and black mage party. Pretty standard. I know a lot of people hate the graphics in the PSP remakes, but I sort of like them. Yesterday, and today I managed to make my way to the Earth crystal, defeating the Lich. I was under the impression that my characters were under-leveled when I couldn't buy any of the spells in Melmond, so I leveled a bit before working my way through the Earth shrine a second time. Turns out, level 19 (with diaga and firaga) makes for an over-powered party because the Lich went down in 2-3 turns. Beating the Earth Shrine makes me glad that modern jrpg design doesn't often dictate that a player has to make their way through a multi-level dungeon (and back!) twice. Man that was tedious!

Anyhow, 1 crystal down 3 to go. It has been 15-20 years since I played FF1 to completion (on the NES!) so at this point the game feels new to me again.

I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy 2 (which I have never actually completed) and Final Fantasy 3 (which I have never even played).

I have enjoyed reading the various screen shot stories in this thread. I wish I could take my own, but I lack the motivation to try and figure out how to install custom on my PSP :/ Been on official Firmware since 3.90 or so.

After getting Job #3 (Bard), It's sidequest time! I apparently wasn't paying attention when I picked these, as powering up Summoners, Bards, AND Blue Mages takes a fair bit of work. Let's get to it, shall we?

First, a stop in Kat's hometown. (Items here are half-price, and it's the first place you can buy ethers.)
FinalFantasyVAdvance_02-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_03-5.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_05-4.png

There are a number of rather sad scenes here, but more importantly, there's this.
FinalFantasyVAdvance_09-5.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_10-5.png

On to Istory, home of the flame ring. Unfortunately, I have no way to abuse those this time so I think I'll skip earning the 200k gil needed for a full set. Inside the town, there's stuff to find. The spell "Toad" is also hidden here, but I'm not picking it up.
FinalFantasyVAdvance_17-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_20-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_15-3.png

Just outside of town, there's more stuff to find: The aforementioned Old Man, and a second spell that lets me play the numbers game. Dark spark halves the level of the target, which is useful when trying to hit targets with "Lvl X" spells. My party's in such bad shape because it took forever to get the enemies to successfully use it on me (and I don't yet have non-destructive healing).
FinalFantasyVAdvance_23-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_22-2.png

On with the plot: The Desert of the Shifting Sands. By FAR the easiest area for a party with passable blue magic.
FinalFantasyVAdvance_29-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_31-1.png

Aqua Breath is not a cheap spell, but it certainly gets the job done. this area also defies tradition by having the boss at the start rather than the end. He too dies in one hit.
FinalFantasyVAdvance_35-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_36-1.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_37-2.png

What's on the other side of the desert? That'll be for next time.

Bonus: Mid's a liar and no one should listen to him ever.

You can go in wells in DQ games so it could be a reference to that. Not sure what about your post made it seem like you wouldn't know that but ya know.

Finally got all fourteen characters in FFVI and...felt kinda burnt out. So I jumped to FFV and am already to Crescent. Pretty fun little game. My only real gimmick is that I'm trying to use every job.

Got started on FFV last night. I'm about at the same part that Cyan is at, except I got beat by the Sandworm and stopped for the night. I'm running a Blue Mage in my party as well, gonna have to get in on that Aqua Breath cheese.

One complaint I have is UI related. I have a difficult time distringuishing the symbols for items. Small complaint, but annoying nonetheless when you're playing.

For the hell of it I started up FFI (Dawn of Souls version) yesterday and made it to Elfland. Rolling a RDM/THF/BLM/WHM. Should be interesting.

I really need my wife to stop watching The Biggest Loser so I can finish up FFXIII and start FFXIII-2. Although this does give me time to finish the last bits of Skyrim I have left. >_>;

I was playing FF1 on PSP, and everything went fine until I got to Chaos. What a ridiculous boss he is. I just turned off my PSP when he used Curaja for the second time. Fuck this game.

It probably helps that FF3 had fully functional touchscreen controls on the DS; It was possible to play without using the buttons at all iirc.

Reina and faris have an interesting discussion, but it doesn't lead anywhere. In the morning, Broman and his friends stumble upon a teleporter inside the Walz meteor. They arrive on a new continent with vicious monsters. After many ifs and buts, they manage to reach the City of Fire, Karnak.

Unfortunately, someone saw our heroes come out of the meteor, and they are believed to be monsters. They get arrested. In the dungeon, they meet the gunpowder loving engineer named Cid. He built the elemental chrystal enhancing machines (He tried to destroy his own creation, that's why he's in jail.). Suddenly the Chancellor barges in and tells Cid that the Fire Chrystal is in danger. But Cid won't do anything about it if Broman and Co get released too. Ofcourse, before adventuring, Galuf needs to relax and play some music. He's getting better!

Yehaw! Just finished off FF1 (PSP Origins). First time I ever played the game. Not bad, way too many random encounters. It made moving anywhere insanely frustrating. Now on to FF2.

So odd that the thing that drove you away is what I remember most fondly of the game. Of course, I was playing it as a kid on the NES and I will always remember being crushed by Chaos and the grinding I had to do to overcome him. Few games have ever reached that level of satisfaction for me from beating it.

I really wish there was a PSP-style 2D remake of FFIII... I'd rather play it looking like that than with the new 3D art style...

FF3 is full of really astonishing and memorable imagery (and the best 8-bit RPG music ever to perfectly complement all of it.) Comparing it to FF1 it's really astonishing what an upgrade it is; comparing it to later games, it's amazing how well it delivers this feeling of grandeur and scope in this concise, elegant package, without any excesses or need for overbearing storytelling.

I personally find all the PSP remakes pretty uggos but it would indeed be nice to have a 2D upgraded version of 3 just to provide continuity for people looking to play the 2D games in an original-gameplay format but with UX upgrades.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Kinda wondering why FFIII is the least ported game overall. The only way to play the English game is to play the 3D remake of the game on NDS/iOS. Like what charlequin said, I hope they port or remake the game in 2D (like I, II, IV) at the very least in the future.

CFW is super easy now.
Stump wrote up a post here: http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=34637129&postcount=367

It really takes very little effort and is totally safe and reversible now.

Cool, I had no idea you could do this so easily. Thanks! I am now thinking about doing that to my 3000. Already have my 2000 using the older kind of CFW but I prefer playing on the 3000 bc of the screen and want to get stuff like FF CC and a few others on my memstick to reduce loading from UMD.

Edit: LOL that was almost too easy.

I've beaten the game two times before, so this isn't my first time with the game. For some reason I don't remember ever having any problems with him at all. I guess I was at a higher level with my characters back then. Also, I didn't bring a fighter this time either.

Real quick, does anyone know, in FF13 Ch13, if there are any story related scenes besides the final fight? I have a save b4 the final fight, and I have a save of my 2nd playthrough currently in orphans cradle. I'd like to finish the game w.o lil tedious fights so I can start 13-2

EDIT:

Nvm.. found my own answer: nope

The crystal tower is the first "last dungeon" of FF3. It isn't particularly complicated, it's just fairly lengthy. Fortunately, there are tons of shortcuts in the walls that make it shorter, so I got to the end fairly quickly.

cpt3Cl.jpg
mWIVOl.jpg

NTV1il.jpg
3W8E6l.jpg

At the end, we fall right into a trap. Totally immobilized and helpless, we are about to give up hope when Doga's voice rings out. Then we get to see the last battle of Earthbound 4 years earlier.

BlSJjl.jpg
BIV4nl.jpg
T2Ipil.jpg

Stuff happens, I don't really want to spoil. Then we finally meet Zande. He's not particularly difficult, although he isn't a pushover either. He likes to cast meteo, which is a hassle, but two sages who can cure is more than enough to put him away. Unfortunately.

nxyCbl.jpg

He summons Cloud of Darkness, and she wipes us all out. This battle is impossible to win under normal circumstances, and you're supposed to lose. After more spoilery stuff happens, we end up...

im5tcl.jpg

In the dark world. The dark world is kinda weird. You can walk straight up to fight the final boss if you like, but there are wings that lead to dark versions of the light crystals, where you can fight a boss and free a dark warrior to aid you against the Cloud of Darkness. Since we definitely need the help, that's what we'll do.

lcmQll.jpg
LhJnel.jpg
dNxnll.jpg

In each wing of the dark world, there are chests containing ribbons that are guarded by Zande clones. It's just like fighting Zande from earlier, except he has a little less HP. It's too bad that there's no real benefit to ribbons at this point in the game, since status effects are mostly done with.

SIF7Il.jpg
ZSoPYl.jpg
s0X0zl.jpg

The first boss is guarded by Cerberus. At this point, I'm absolutely tired of this translation patch. There's so many things absolutely wrong in it, I'll definitely never play it again. A couple of days ago, I found a code that enables the dash button even in the Japanese version, and since that was one of the only reasons why I was using this, that's just wonderful.

Anyway, Cerberus is a wimp. There's nothing special to say about him.

BppVPl.jpg
H7Locl.jpg
w8DBjl.jpg

Next is Echidna. This one is actually the hardest of the crystal guardians down here, in my opinion. He casts meteo and quake, as well as breakra which doesn't matter since we all have ribbons.

OEBazl.jpg
Twbpil.jpg
bq2tYl.jpg

Ahriman is also not to be taken lightly, since he can also cast meteo and quake, as well as thunder. As you can see, it was a close fight.

MLvAEl.jpg
mBAnil.jpg
60RVOl.jpg

"2-Head D" (derp) is less threatening than the others, since all he does is physically attack. Sadly, that physical attack is extremely strong and will absolutely one-shot anybody in my group that it hits. Fortunately, we have arise so it was going great until he killed both of my sages. An extremely close fight, as you can see.

QSbjEl.jpg

At this point, all that's left is the final boss. I had a lot of money left over, though, so I decided to exit and go buy as many shurikens as I could possibly afford. That turned out to be about 20 or so in total including the ones I had already found in chests. This is really important, since at my level, I need to be able to do as much damage as I possibly can, as quickly as I can, because it's hard to recover fast enough. I tend to finish around this level, but I'm confident that the game is designed such that you should be 5-10 levels higher.

Mhhv9l.jpg
CVgLgl.jpg
MYQgMl.jpg

Cool stuff happens. I thought this room looked really neat way back when I first played the game. I can't remember what it looks like in the remake at all, but it's probably more impressive.

qOs2ml.jpg
0brmJl.jpg
Ceidol.jpg
GJnwel.jpg

This is it. Cloud of Darkness only has one attack - flare wave. It'll hit everybody in the group for about 1500 on average at my level. It's hard to keep up with, because both of my healers healing full time can just barely surpass that when targeting the full group. So that's why I need to kill her as quickly as possible.

Fortunately: ninjas. As you can see, a hasted ninja will deal 9999 wielding a shuriken in each hand. The number of shurikens I had didn't quite let me do enough damage to kill her, but I was very close and finished with regular weapons at the end. The battle went pretty smoothly, all told. Yay.

Vn4bnl.jpg
JW8hal.jpg

Then everybody goes home, and the game is over!

As I mentioned before, FF3 was my very first Final Fantasy game. I have quite a soft spot for it, although my general outlook on it kinda soured over time, particularly after I played the DS version. Replaying the Famicom version has renewed my appreciation for the game, though, I think. It really is something special.

The one good thing about falling into mystrious holes is that sometimes they have airships in them! (The fire-powered ship is also down here. Apparently everything that falls into a hole goes to the same place.)
FinalFantasyVAdvance_26-2.png
FinalFantasyVAdvance_30-1.png

And attempting to move the airship means that it's boss time. Cray Claw only has one dangerous attack; his Tail Screw reduces a character to a single digit of health. (I think he also has a paralyze, but I didn't see it this time.) Overall, he fits squarely in the "not really a boss" category.

Now that I have the adamantite, it's time to go fight a real boss. First, the guards. Missile is the Blue Magic version of Gravira (aka Quarter). Flame Thrower is just a fire attack, one I would have handled much better had I remembered to heal up between fights.

The main event: Launchers use a special version of missile that also inflicts Old. I managed to slow them down a bit, but Galuf still got hit. Ramuh did a nice job of taking them out.

Once they're gone, the only attack is the cannon's beam after it fully charges. One beam later, I had three party members standing and the cannon was no more.

So odd that the thing that drove you away is what I remember most fondly of the game. Of course, I was playing it as a kid on the NES and I will always remember being crushed by Chaos and the grinding I had to do to overcome him. Few games have ever reached that level of satisfaction for me from beating it.

Grinding?

Pfft. Grinding.

Edit: I've uploaded about 100 screenshots to finish the Butts and Balls story. I'll probably work up some posts tonight and start FF2 after that. Fun!

Continuing my journey through Final Fantasy Anniversary:

When I last left off, I had just defeated the Lich and restored the Earth Crystal:

Like I said, my party was a little overpowered during the fight with the Lich and he went down very quickly:

Making my way back to Melmond, I am thanked for my efforts and told that the Earth has been restored.... Looks the same to me!

Next stop Crescent Lake! Turns out most of the new weapons and equipment are too weak, and most of the magic too strong for me to use...

pic_0005.jpg

Talking to some Wisemen in town points me towards my next target. Mount Gulg!

pic_0006.jpg

Mount Gulg was a decent dungeon. I didn't encounter many difficult fights, but there were lots of paths to explore and plenty of treasure to loot. Now to tend to that fire crystal!

Right after I take care of Marilith ....

... Which took about 90 seconds

With Marilith defeated, I am able to restore the fire crystal. Two down, two to go!

I REALLY want to play the original FFIII on an actual Famicom after seeing this thread. Wish there was a way to play the English version on actual hardware (I know I could buy a reproduction cart or a NES PowerPak or something, but it's expensive....) I could probably buy the Famicart, but my Japanese is low-level. I wonder if the story is simple enough for me to grasp, though...?

Going through the Gametrailers Final Fantasy Retrospectives in honor of the occasion as well. If you haven't seen them I highly recommend them all.

I saw these years ago, but they're ripe for a re-listen. Thanks for the reminder. They were quite thorough and well done, as I remember.
