So despite this being the teams fifth PS3 game, it actually runs much better on 360?! What the hell?

oh man, so heroic moments when you get downed and can crawl around blasting robots with the handgun :D "do you need assistance?!" "i'll be fine!"

played the ps3 and 360 version of the demo. the 360 version runs much smoother and has better image quality (looks sharper). there are still slowdowns in the 360 demo but the ps3 demo is much worse.

I'll wait till someone does a more in-depth analysis before jumping to conclusions on which version runs better.

People were assuming at the Darkness II demo thread that the PS3 version was garbage when it actually was not, just because a couple members whom need their eyes checked IMO said so.

Where is that Japanese comparison site when you need it lol.

Anyway, my theory on why the 360 version would run better, is that its gpu is better at handling volumetric and alpha effects better than the triple. This game uses plenty.

My theory on why the PS3 version would be better is that it should be lead platform based on most videos being off that version and the development teams prior history on the console should have netted them some established tech to work off of aka should be more optimized.

I mentioned this before, but does anyone else also notice that the game is running sub-hd, but without any scaling?

Playing the PS3 demo on my monitor shows borders, I don't know if the 360 version is the same.

I concur, 360 version looks and plays way better.

I think they have a focus on the US market.
360 may have been the lead platform, but it's definitely a weird situation.

Shouldn't really matter. Developers generally don't have to go out of their way to make the 360 version look good.

The demo didn't really click with me, sadly. Everything seemed competent, the party talk feature was fun and a friend wants to COOP but somehow this game screams budget purchase at me.

For some reason, the weight and feel of the character and cover mechanic really remind me of Winback on N64. Either way, I like it. The only problem I have is how the character looks while turning. It's always been a pet peeve, and this game is one of the worst offenders. His feet look like they are twisting behind him and shit lol

They've barely touched the Yakuza engine since Kenzan came out shortly after the PS3's launch, Binary Domain is probably their second major programming job on HD consoles. Btw, I haven't tried the demo yet, but is Binary Domain still running at 1024 x 768 like all the PS3 Yakuza games?

I did...though I had no idea what the left stick prompt were for, so I kept shooting the damn thing.

I enjoyed it, though I hadn't noticed any real issue with the framerate. Still planning on Day 1 pick-up on the PS3.

Yeah it took me a second to figure out what you're trying to do up there. Basically when it shows L1 and R1 it's telling you to hold L1 and then use R1 to shoot, and when it shows the left stick you have to counter the way he's trying to shift you to stay on his back so you can shoot him more.

So I just played through again and this time I shot both of its' arms off and it kept trying to step on me, and then when I went upstairs it would smash the side of the building to try and get to me, nice.

Well, the team has never been super awesome at polishing their games to run at consistent or high framerates. This is also a brand new multiplatform engine they created for the game, instead of the Yakuza engine, so it could simply be that they benefited from the 360 dev environment being easier and more forgiving when implementing the stuff they needed.

I told you this would be awesome, "Bargain bin" bunch.

I just hope this was an old build and retail has 7 more fps. ><

Is it just me, or do the enemies seem to have that same steely eyed "i'm going to kill you player" glance that a decent amount of the enemies in Demon's/Dark Souls have? Like they stare at you for a little straight on, then charge.

Ah I see, I'll keep this in mind next time I play, thanks.

Awww. I'll wait for the final DigFoundry face-off article of this. It sucks that the ps3 demo runs so poorly. Actually, I don't really think the final build is gonna improve much at this point. :( One more game off my to-buy list.

The only times I notice frame rates issues are in games where they seem to be particularly bad, so for what it's worth, I haven't had any issues with the PS3 demo in my three playthroughs so far. Try it for yourself and see if you throw-up or not.;)

I played the demo and it was kind of alright, but my enjoyement was heavily altered by the voice commands not working properly. For the guys that said it "worked pretty well", are you using some high quality mic? I guess my problem lies with the not-so-good Bluetooth headset I'm using.

It looks pretty fun otherwise, I'll definitely play a little more of it.

Disappointing and kinda unacceptable the way it performs on PS3. Will buy cheap and used a few months from now.

Now that it's proven that the 360 version runs better, it sucks that they couldn't get parity on the framerate.

Better be improved on PS3 when it releases otherwise i ain't supporting this crap. Super disappointed in these guys so far. I can kind of deal with the Yakuza series low ass resolution, but the framerate is just jarring on PS3 now that seeing the 360 version is at a solid 30.

Really disappointing performance comparison. I don't have much hope for the retail version performing better honestly. That's a comparison with the first demo mission too. I kinda want to see a comparison on the second demon mission, to see how well the 360 version holds up.

I loved the demo, it's bettern than I expected. I think it's actually tougher than gears.
The PS3 version does chugs a bit but it didn't stop me from enjoying it.

Is there any way to change the language to english in the demo??

I feel like, if the ps3 version had these problems, they wouldn't have been showing it off all the time. What I think might have happened is they had the PS3 demo from an older build that they used at expos. Then they had to make a 360 demo to come out with the PS3 demo so they just took the same levels out of the 360 version of a later product.

Who knows.

Nah, the 360 demos have existed along with the PS3 demos for a long time now. There were many instances where they demo'd the 360 verison instead of the PS3 one as well.

Who knows. Might end up getting Darkness 2 instead. I can accept iffy framerate on some games but not shooters. It always blew my mind that people were able to play Crysis 2 on consoles with all the FPS problems it had.

Wow the 360's framerate looks downright playable. I wish they would do an analysis on the second part of the demo, it is way more stressful. I wonder if it still dips down hard during it.

Just tried it tonight myself and, yeah, the framerate is unacceptably poor. I can't believe how low it drops. I'm surprised that a game in 2012 could be released with such low performance numbers.

That said, the game itself seemed pretty slick. The animation was great, the motion blur lovely, and the combat weighty. The way the machines ripped apart was quite impressive as well.

Oh, and I was completely taken by surprise with the voice command stuff. I didn't realize you could use the PS Eye microphone to talk with your squad. I skipped the training and jumped right into the first mission so I missed anything that may have discussed it. I couldn't figure out how to select the dialog choices or squad commands and just tried saying one of them. Imagine my surprise when it actually registered! Now I'm wondering why we haven't seen this more often with the PS Eye. I knew it was quite easy to pull off with Kinect, but I haven't played any PS3 game with this feature. Yet, despite sitting on top of my center channel, the microphone picked up what I say 99% of the time. Not bad.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Kinect so I'll have to forgo these features as there's no way I'm buying the PS3 version with these kinds of problems. 360 it is.

I really want this game, but will probably wait on a price drop. Hopefully co-op modes will still be populated by then. That is the number one thing that usually keeps me from waiting on online enabled titiles: Concern that they'll be dead by the time I get around to them.

EDIT: Seems like a missed opportunity to use humans as the opposing team in MP, and not robots.

you can use the mic

the horde mode (up to 4) is against robot machines

Sorry if this question has been answered already, but I didn't see it when I skimmed through the thread.

Is there a planned US release for the demo?

I don't think you need a kinect, or even the PS eye. The voice commands for Binary Domain works with any mic headset that's compatible with the system. I used a normal USB headset with the PS3 demo and it worked perfectly.

Yep, the PS3 version will be fine. The demo's just an old build. Here's Nagoshi showing a different level on Gamespot on, yes you guessed it, the PS3.

Can you adjust the sensitivity of the controls? I would like not to whip around so fast.

Also, could someone maybe upload the Xbox demo? I'm sure a lot of us would like to try that one out.

that's good to know. might get it a bit earlier now!

I can't really tell if it's steady on a youtube. Why wouldn't they put out a more recent demo?

really? Crysis 2?
