Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning |OT| An Enemy-Pounding Funfest

Reckoning has gone to No 1 in the UK all format chart which is really nice to see.

I managed to pick up the last 360 copy from my local GAME on Friday lunchtime and they only had 3 PS3 copies left. Manager said he was surprised how well it was doing and that they had under stocked.

I hope that is a sign of strong sales and early support for a sequel.

Can I ask how much content/fun the online pass/dlc adds? Was wondering if they're big content or just mini-extras. There aren't any trophs/achievs associated with them either, right?

1 additional faction with 7 (or around that region) of quests attached. So far all the factions have been mostly fun although I haven't met the DLC faction yet.

Sitting at work and planing what to do next in the game. This game is addicting. I played nearly 30 hours this weekend without touching the main Storyline.

Is the enemy difficulty in each region fixed, or does it scale with the player level (like in Skyrim)?

Limited scaling, like in Dragon Age Origins.

Every area has its own scale: for example, area A --> Level 20-30. If you enter that area at level 20 or lower, the game will keep the level level 20 at all times. Enter at level 25, the enemies will be at level 25. Enter 30 or above, then the enemies will be at level 30.

Curt must be celebrating like he's team won the World Series again:

It’s another RPG at the top this week as EA’s new IP, ‘Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning’, goes straight in at No1. The last new IP to reach No1 was Dead Island back in week 37 2011 but you have to go all the way back to week 12 2000 with the first Pokemon game, Pokemon Red, to find an original RPG at the top! It’s also the first game from independent developer 39 Studios (owned by baseball player Curt Schilling) in co-operation with subsidiary Big Huge Games. Last week’s No1, Square Enix’s ‘Final Fantasy XIII-2’ (-54%), therefore has to settle for second place ahead of another new entry, Take 2’s sequel ‘The Darkness II’, in at No3. Last week’s No2 ‘Metal Gear Solid HD Collection’ (-49%) has slipped down to No4 followed by two EA titles at No5 and No6 with ‘FIFA 12’ (-19%) ahead of ‘Battlefield 3’ (-29%). Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ (-10%) stays rooted at No7 and Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ (-28%) has fallen down two places to No8. Rounding off the Top 10 we have another RPG that has been at No1 with Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ (-27%) at No9 and ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games’ (+145%) has raced up the charts from No31 to No10 thanks to the release of the 3DS version. We have a couple of new entries making it into the Top 40 with Deep Silver’s ‘Catherine’ at No 20 and EA’s ‘Grand Slam Tennis 2’ at No26.

well, I guess that much, I still don't understand about the fates surrounding them though, are they fated to repeat their past lives to the letter? or that is just their custom to re-enact their past lives.

for example, if their past lives they're dead by falling from a cliff, will they died the same way again in their new lives?
Everyone is bound by fate, both mortals and fae alike. The only difference is mortals just get the one life and that's it. Fae are forced to repeat the same actions each cycle until the cycle is finally broken. So it's like the movie Groundhog Day for them but they can't actually change anything. Free will and choice didn't exist in this world until some outside force infected the tewatha (the bad fae) and also is connected to the main character's rebirth.

Wanted to finish Adessa but too damn tired. Also does anyone know where the last ore is you're supposed to gather for the gnome is in the area before Adessa. I went into all the mines and only managed to scrounge up 4 :(.

For the ones playing finesse in here, how does pure finesse compare to the hybrid finesse builds in terms of damage potential and overall gameplay?

I respecced away from that at 19. Damage potential was very nice with the bow, almost too much so. It kinda devolved into a one button-mashing fest with the occasional dagger swipe when bored or when stealthing up and a frost trap or two.

This is what I had as well. Now playing as a Might/Sorcery hybrid and the amount of diversity in the combat is insane.

What's your build like? I'm thinking a faeblade/greatsword build that leans toward finesse to get the two top tier passive stun and damage proc abilities. How viable would that be?

I also switched to might and sorcery and, indeed, the diversity is stunning compared to full finesse. There are so many possibilities.

I have went for greatsword and chakrams with the persistant shield from sorcery too. Mind you, I'm only level 21 so I don't have more points yet, but the final distribution should be pretty equal in might/sorcery.

Aren't both faeblade and greatsword both AoE melee? If so, one of them would be redundant.

I decided to re-spec and focus more on blacksmithing than alchemy. I can now make weapons that are better than the ones that I've found. Nice! This game is so damn addicting.

Level 18 so far and I use Greatsword/Chakrams. I have been putting points in both the Might and Sorcery trees, especially in Mark of Flame and Meteor. The two best abilities I have for now and when groups of enemies attack me they have zero chance of surviving. I do not even have any problems with those Grave Treshes since hits from my greatsword always stagger them.

Ah yes, exactly. I forgot to mention that perk. Threshes get turned into stun-locked punching bags.

Thanks for writing that though! I have around 46 in might and 17 in sorcery. It sounds like I should invest more in sorcery :).

Mark of Flame is so underrated. At the highest level you can mark 4 enemies but when a group of 8 attack you and they are all in close proximity to each other the 4 explosions have an AoE, so the rest get hit as well.

Actually, from my experience, I believe you can mark as much as you want, but only 4 per time. Meaning... you mark a group of 4, "turn around" for more unmarked enemies, use the skill again, and 8 of them will be marked. Explode, and then boom!

Try it.

Again, regarding the DLC faction. Are you supposed to see their sign on the world map immediately or is there some other sign that the day 1 dlc is active (in the steam version?)

If you have the Steam version, it's active no matter what. You may not see it until you get into that region, though.

Wait. What perk? How are you able to stun lock threshes with great sword attacks?

Sorry, I phrased that badly. Simply normal greatsword attacks stagger them each hit. (There is no ability/perk to choose!). If you spam the attack button they should never get up/get to act. This happened with my white (non-enhanced) great sword, so I don't think it had anything to do with an elemental vulnerability.

Of course I don't know what would happen if you were to try with an element the tresh would be resistant against.

If you have the Steam version, it's active no matter what. You may not see it until you get into that region, though.

Thanks!

Canneroc turned out to be an interesting place.

I quite like it going with bow and daggers. I switched to greatsword and bow for a while and I wasn't really feeling it. Combat wise I have Blade Honing active at all times; when I have to deal with a crowd I drop a frost trap and wait for it to get triggered. Alternatively there are smoke bombs and that other skill where you blow the dust. I enjoy not having an actual AoE attack, lots of kiting and situation assessing. Having enemies blinded by smoke while I lay into another one is a satisfying feeling. Also, DPS is pretty crazy with Blade Honing and bleeding/poison on your daggers. There's a passive ability that increases potency of bleeding/poison.

Crazy stuff.

That didn't fully answer your question, what I'm saying though is that pure finesse is quite enjoyable. Going hybrid with Sorcery to get more Chakram damage would probably give you better crowd control.

The scope of this game is so incredible to me. I just finished up everything I had to do in Dalentarth last night and it took me a solid 32 hours. 32 hours finishing the first of five areas...

I'm loving playing as a might/sorcery build as well, my crusader is a one man wrecking crew.

I had come in here to ask about this, the Giantbomb guys said there was no point in blacksmithing because you can always find better stuff. I liked messing around with blacksmithing in Skyrim maybe I will try putting some points into it. I am so happy to see this game do so well, it really is a great game. I couldnt pick up my copy until the weekend, and I still put in like 20 hours. It totally has that just one more quest thing going on.

I'm a battle-mage myself. Loving the teleport instead of roll. Could you provide me with some stats, like quests finished etc.? I got "done" with Dalentarth at around 22.5 hours and I'm starting to think I missed some quests >_>.

I haven't had a gaming weekend like I just had in a long time. I could not stop playing.

I'd love to see this formula again for another Reckoning, forget the MMO.

Hard is hard enough.

Kind of a cheap tactic, but I'm getting a lot of mileage out of charge dagger (x4 or 5) -> electro bolt -> charge dagger again -> repeat. Mix some chakrams in there for some hot sauce.

I'm away from my PS3 at the moment but I think last time I checked I had finished something like 50 quests or so? I did the entire House of the Ballads quest-line as well. A good portion of my play-time probably comes from talking to NPC's and walking around town, as I always listen to every line of dialogue that I can. Still, I haven't really been taking my time too much.

And yeah, blink is so awesome! My guy is completely decked out in heavy might-based armor which probably makes things very confusing for his enemies when he teleports through them. :)

My weapon combo of choice at the moment is hammer plus chakrams. Pull the enemy in with the harpoon, smack 'em a few times with the hammer, and then chakram them and anyone else around while they're on the ground. It's satisfying stuff.

Well, I'm only level 14ish, so it could still be true that I could find better items than I'd be able to get by blacksmithing. I have no idea yet, but as of now it seems like a practical skill.

So I was screwing around with the calculator this morning. How is this for a champion build? I was thinking of trying a little minion action. (No not in that way!)

To be honest, the summon is pretty pathetic, imo. It's got brick for brains AI.

Also, you put a lot of points maxing out most of the special weapon attacks...are you sure you're going to be using all them? And using them enough to warrant maxing out to get the bonus fate perks? Saving a few points here and there can get you War Cry and Relentless Assault...the two best skills on the might side, imo.

I haven't messed with blacksmithing but sagecrafting is incredibly useful. I've already added some pretty potent gems to my equipment. My curiass has a gem that gives +2 health regen per second and my hammer has a gem that gives 30 lightning damage plus some fairly high amount of lightning damage over 10 seconds. I haven't even found any items with slots for epic gems yet so I can't imagine how insane things get eventually...

I have two items with +1 to sorcery so Mark of Flame tags 7 in one cast which is very nice. Too bad I can't stack marks but then again that would just be ridiculously overpowered. It's a very useful ability since the cast staggers almost any thing in the cast area and then the explosion has a very satisfying AoE and knock down effect.

Question regarding some side quests:
am I imagining things or are all the Ysa quests are just evil decisions? I even stole the daggers from the ambassador but the quest keeps asking me to kill her ;-( and then there's this other quest where I have to steel some petals of a well guarded flower or some thing. I think I'll skip them for now.

I don't think Jeff really looked into it, because blacksmithing can get pretty ridiculous, especially when you start taking into account gems and whatnot. Even with some standard components, I can generally create gear that's better than my own now. Having said that, I haven't really used it because the stuff you find around the world is good enough, and I also don't feel like putting too much time and effort into crafting.

Is the house in Canneroc the only place you can store items? I'm starting to run out of space. :\

I read that the stash is shared all through out the game so I don't think that we have a way of increasing it at the moment. I hope we get some thing in the upcoming DLC.

Speaking of which, I think this game (and any other loot based one) could be improved by adding an in-game online auction house or an item trading system.

I'm pretty sure the Dagger/Ambassador quest is glitched for me. I stole the daggers as well, and then it still asked to kill her. Okay, I killed her. Once I killed her, it's now asking me to retrieve the daggers from the body.... which Im currently in possession of. There isnt even a loot button when I hover above her body. It wont progress past that point.

Yeah same happened to me, that's when I reloaded ;-; I think I'll just skip the quests in that area for now.

Found a really sexy pair of Faeblades called the Salamander's Tail. I can already feel a respec coming.

Found those as well and thought the same thing, then I found some purple chakrams called dragons eye and thought about a respec to use them.........FFFfffffffffff

Yep.
I killed her took the daggers and "destroyed" them via the inventory button in the Junk department. Didn't count as I was supposed to sell them to a specific mechant

I have a question, guys. Do the damage stats on weapons reflect changes that occur based on the points you've put into the skill trees for that weapon type? Or is that done behind the scenes?

But that doesn't make any sense, the quest giver said you can do whatever you wanted with them (including junking/salvaging them)

Once again Gertsmann mirrors my thoughts almost exactly...

I've put about 20 hours into this game so far, and it's a good game, it really is. The stuff it does well it does really well. The problem is there are some glaring balance issues that tend to undo all of the stuff it does do so well. Namely, this game is too easy. Combat is fun, but rarely a challenge. Loot is great, but never really seems to matter. Treasure chests are exciting, but I already have more money than I know what to do with. The world is big, but you just end up fast-traveling everywhere. There's little sense of danger or scope in this game. I'm in this tightly packed world, just going through the motions.

Another critique Giant Bomb nailed was how dense this world is. There's just too much to do, and most of it ends up coming across as really mundane. It has Arkham City syndrome in my opinion. I've since taken the advice of entirely skipping all side quests and sticking primarily to the Main and Faction content. Which is a shame, because the characters in this world are great. Voice acting is almost flawless throughout. And the art design is wonderful. So it's a shame that talking to these people ends up feeling like a waste of time.

And while the writing and voice acting are really very good, the dialogue UI is very clunky. Instead of having conversations with NPC's you are constantly picking these fragmented sentences to listen to, so nothing really seems to adhere. So that too quickly becomes something to avoid. Dialogue in this game is a chore.

Inventory UI doesn't fair much better, despite the great idea of flagging items as 'junk'. I've learned to not go into my inventory every time I pick up a piece of loot - because you're picking up pieces of loot almost constantly - just because it's such a slow process. I'll wait 10 or 15 minutes, or until I've finished the current quest, before going into inventory to see if anything was an upgrade.

Art design is fantastic, but the engine is a little lackluster (360). But then, not much really impresses me on consoles these days.

I don't know. The game is so good, and I want to love it, but there are some underlying problems that seem to unravel everything, or at least hamper my will to play it.

You do know you can press X (I'm assuming, it's square on PS3) to compare a piece of loot to what you currently have equipped, right? There's no reason to go into your inventory to look at that.

I dont know, perhaps Im just bad at the game, but where Im currently at (just at and a little east of Ysa), the difficulty feels great. West of me is scrubby enemies, enemies in the area Im doing quest in are giving me a fun challenge, and just to the east of us I can get taken down really quick. And this is with doing a good amount of the side quest.
