Sometimes I get a little too excited about things. I was concerned mainly with causing a "tl;dr" mentality.
You are good to go. That kind of review posts should be encouraged, in fact there are quite a handful of people in here masterful at those.

I wish I could remember you more, but with a name like /XX/ you're so mysterious. Do you wear a top hat, perchance?
I said I remember your posts, but you won't find me until I want you to... always on the decisive moment, of course! "...like ghosts, always in the shadows. Always hiding behind lies, and proxy sold...ie..." whatever.

Also, I'm more of a beret man myself (specially on this cold winter), but not exactly the one that old people wear here in Spain, something a little different.

Thankfully this is extremely frowned upon. Also, /XX/ is one of those people that is too reasonable for this thread ;)
Thanks for the compliment... I guess... as long as you don't report me (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=34751218&postcount=16017) I'll act vehemently (and at random) from time to time. Deal?

I certainly hope not, but after what I saw of FLCL's update (one free episode from itunes), I'm not putting it past anyone.

Then again, is it wrong that I opted for the dvd version of yu yu hakusho over bluray, because I liked the slightly yellow look it had to it? Something must be wrong with my brain.
Or right!
Why would you prefer the yellow tinge, along with the multitude of problems that YYH DVDs have? :(

But trust me nothing bad is going to happen to Bebop. It'll be okay!

Continuing on my trek through older anime films and series that I've been meaning to get through. I guess this season being a bit slow isn't such a bad thing after all. I've been going through the Kare Kano anime for the past week but decided to take a break and give this other Gainax work a watch. This was one of those anime films where I've heard mentioned many many times but I've never took opportunity to check it out for whatever reason. Before watching it, I didn't even know a thing about it other than the fact that: it's pretty old, it's apparently sci-fi, it's Gainax, and that it seems to pop up in quite a few "classic anime" lists. I always saw it as that one film with the weird title I couldn't pronounce.

The first thing that struck me was the art direction. The film's art style had a pretty interesting concept that I wasn't really expecting. I'm a sucker for good art direction, and the level of detail in this seemingly alternate universe was something that grew on me. It had a strange balance of Fantasy, 50's style Sci-Fi, and modern times that I appreciated a lot more as the film progressed. It felt different yet at the same time it remained very cohesive. The high quality animation definitely helped in that respect and it's really impressive how well it holds up for an 80's anime film. Very good stuff.

I can't say I'm a fan of the soundtrack, though I guess it did fit the film in several ways.

Going into this without any expectations, I honestly didn't anticipate how thought provoking this film would end up being. The overall story and the themes portrayed here were very interesting. The spiritual beliefs or lack thereof of the characters, the main character's mental exhaustion of the publicity, the corruptness of politics and its neglect of the impoverished population, the subtleness of the war brewing on in the background, etc. All of it seemed handled very well to me. The ending was awesome as well.
For a while I actually had doubts that he would even make it to space. With all the pressure, all the previous set-backs, and the war going on it seemed less and less likely that their dream would become reality. The actual launch scene was incredible. It kinda reminded me of that one scene from Children of Men (it was the first thing that came to mind haha) with how both sides just stop fighting for a brief moment to take in the incredible sight. The final minutes were great and Shiro's prayer was an excellent way to end the film. The picture I posted above is probably my favorite scene from the whole movie.

All in all, a very well made and ambitious film. Kinda meandered a bit around the middle of the film but I enjoyed it a lot.

Gainax has a lot of really good old stuff, and Wings is one of their best. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much!

The Knight in the Area 06: Those are some really fancy graphics for a high school game.

This show is really cheap-looking. Lots of stills and awfully bad art for what should be the high point. And yet I can't stop watching. The team dynamics are very fun, and this show definitely fills up a niche that has been missing in my anime-watching since Giant Killing.

I liked what they did with the animation for introducing each teams players on field, it was a nice touch.

woaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah i didn't know Teddie was an Arararararararagi

I do like what they've done with Charlie's character. He has become a true bro. And indeed this episode was pretty great! It hit the emotional tones it needed to when necessary with no stupid comedy to cheapen them out. Too bad about the awful animation and art.

Why would you prefer the yellow tinge, along with the multitude of problems that YYH DVDs have? :(
The cleaned up versions feel too sterile in comparison. There's something about the yellow wash to the show that feels intentional (I know it wasn't) and gives a consistent and unique feel to the show's palette than the touched up one.
I'll trust you, pizzaroll, as pizza has never broken my heart before.

Moonspeak, I'm really glad you enjoyed RSF. The art direction was one of the first things that got me interested, since it looked like Mononoke + space or something, hahaha. I was sort of shocked to see you also felt a
Children of Men
parallel, as that popped into my head when watching as well. One incredibly powerful moment in a film filled with them.

Dang it, I need to watch that again... Why must the bluray/dvd combo pack be so expensive?!
Anyone that has the bluray of it, how does it look? Did they actually take their time with it or was it just forced to scale?

It's great. I have it.

Also, it's expensive because it was one of those few Bandai Visual USA releases. It's like $40 now from a seller on Amazon. The MSRP was $80, lol. And that's why BVUSA did not last long! On the plus, you get a really nice sturdy chipboard box with resealable wrap. (don't throw it away if you buy it)

Everything is tsundere to me
Is that the uguu one or am I thinking of Clannad or something?

Yes, Kannon 2006, that's the uguu one, and it's largely the reason I could stand the show, even if the MC was in the standard "mysteriously surrounded by girls many with supernatural circumstances, oh but he's such a nice boy~" situation, he was very entertaining about it. The way he was a lovable jerk with how he sometimes teased his harem made the characters more interesting and funny (because they were flawed!) and thus made the inevitable KEY drama seem less like harlequin melodrama and more like "star-crossed lovers~"

Clannad does it too to an extent, hell they even have Sunohara, but I always thought the ending sucked shit. Not even the snarky MC could save that empty-headed dame...

That actually sounds like it might be decent then, Haruhi is by far the worst character.

Disappearance is the best Haruhi-related story so far. It also has by far the least Haruhi in it and the most Kyon. This is not a coincidence!

Kyon is the sole purpose for watching the show, I don't think the show would have been tolerable by human beings if he wasn't there.

Bingo.

Lagrange 06: oh great it's the god-awful CGI again it's not like i missed you or anything honestly

do these ovid things run on conservation of ninjutsu?

I thought this was the first weak showing of the series. The direction was definitely not up to the standard set up by the first three episodes, and even the art looked very funky at times. It also didn't help that the mecha battle looked incredibly pedestrian, which is ironic considering it took off from the city setting into a supposedly grander scale like the freaking sky. It taking every possible cliché in the book definitely hampered the experience -whereas the first battle felt imaginative through its use of gritty punch-and-kick mechanics, this one became generic by adding common elements like multiple enemies and lasers and swords and lameness.

Only if you maintain your watchman(-esque) status and continue to encourage intelligent discussion. If you do this, then we have a deal.
Deal then!

And even that imported carbon-copy is still cheaper nowadays than the one in Japan... that currency, man!

Not really. But it should look amazing. 35mm.

Hmm, for the most part. I've not seen any of the HD remaster broadcasts or anything, but I am kind of curious as to how some of the computer effects have turned out - things like the weird morphing they used for the cloaking on some of the the Guymelefs. I wouldn't be shocked if most of that stuff was done off tape further down the line.

The effects were optically printed to 35mm.

You're free to hate the soundtrack though. It's frequently distracting and awful & sounds like they were plinking it out on a broken Casio keyboard they found in someone's garage.
Sounds avant-garde.

Told you so!

Now you gotta watch episode 2 of Twilight Q, because it's like a 30 minute version with the most memorable appearance of giant flying carp in all of anime.
I think that with Beautiful Dreamer, "giant floating fish" should be changed to "giant floating aquatic lifeform"

I mean,
dat turtle
and all. There are definitely cases of floating fish in Beautiful Dreamer, though. And there is an aquarium too.

Back to the movie.. I think that the entire movie was sort of unsettling. There was a very disturbing feel to it, in that somethings-not-right-here dreamy way, esp. when they drive out at any time in the movie. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be a UY fan, expecting a UY movie, and seeing Beautiful Dreamer, lol.

Because I made the comment?
Well yes.

TTGL, surely?

I agree about Kare Kano though, not only unfinished but was heading rapidly downhill towards it's untimely (timely?) demise anyway.

Nah, the TV shows features some fairly Oshii stuff too, but the first movie was definitely full-on Takahashi and Oshii was clearly saying "fuck this shit" in the second.

Can you watch and understand Disapearance, if you don't know anything about the Haruhi canon story?

I watched Disappearance without knowing anything about the Haruhi canon story, but I had a friend who did know the story sitting by me to answer all my questions as they came up, and it cohered into enough sense that the emotional beats hit home. It's a very well-made movie, but if you don't have the means to provide context to the series, the first half will be pretty strange, and the entire second half will seem like utter nonsense.

It's sort of an interesting curiosity watching the movie without knowing the events of the series, because then you see Kyon the way everyone in the movie sees him, and it makes him look really crazy. But he's still a pretty likable protagonist.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
So, let's talk about War in the Pocket.
This is a series marketed to stupid little kids who glorify war by purchasing little plastic models of weapons of mass destruction.

This is also a story about a stupid little kid who goes from glorifying war during wartime to learning that people die when they are killed the hard way, by seeing his surrogate father/brother get turned into hamburger by a beam saber.

This is also about how children must abandon their naivete in order to become adults.

Make of that what you will.

Things I liked about War in the Pocket:
- The scale. As with 08th MS Team, War in the Pocket is a side conflict that keeps the narrative small, down to earth and personal. There is not a single Newtype to be seen, nor are any of them mentioned by name. White Base is only mentioned once in a single throwaway sentence.
- Bernie is a cool guy who I'd like to drink a beer with. Cyclops team is also a team of battle hardened bros, who were bros until the end. There was all of one really annoying character and he eventually grew out of it.
- Chris is 100% waifu material.
- The fights are all interesting to watch and don't heavily abuse physics.
- The use of cliches to good dramatization.
- The tragic ending. There were so many ways they could've copped out. For example, Bernie could've, against all reason, opened the cockpit of his Zaku and go "THIS COLONY IS GOING TO BLOW UP". Then Chris realizes its him and DOESN'T TURN HIM INTO A HAMBURGER. Everyone lives happily ever after. Except that DIDN'T HAPPEN. For that I give it major kudos. If this was adapted by 4kids or something I guarantee you it would've cut out near the end with a voice over saying that Chris and Bernie lived happily ever after and had tons of babies,

Things I disliked about War in the Pocket:
- Alfred. Although, for once, a Gundam protag has a decent reason to be a little shit. He's 10!- - People not noticing sooner that giant robots are invading. They're kind of hard to miss.
- General society remaining unchanged despite the colonization of space. 80s style houses, floppy discs, lightgun vidya games.
- The mechas. Zakus are boring and Alex is just an RX-78 with armor. Kampfer was cool though.
- The tragic ending. Why you gots to do that to my bro Bernie ;-;?

For the better, really. I heard Beautiful Dreamer pissed her off? but I have no good source for that statement.
Apparently Ataru x Lum wasn't even her original plan until fans went for it so strongly. I think it was going to be Ataru x Shinobu with Lum attempting to butt in, but the series was much better moving past that.

I don't know how anyone can say that Honneamise isn't respectable, unless that
attempted rape scene
really rubbed them the wrong way.

I'd even have to say that it's more "respectable" than FLCL. Respectability is overrated, though. If loving FLCL is wrong, I don't want to be right.

War In The Pocket was fantastic. Arguably the best Gundam production. Definitely top 3 for me.
