Not to derail the thread, but do you have any idea what's going on with Revelations? I saw some footage that looked great, but does the whole game look as good? It's suspicious since every 3DS game I've actually played makes the system look less capable than PSP. It even has some of the weird shaky edges like PS1.
Oh yes, Revelations is easily the best looking game on the system. Some areas are less impressive than others, but the overall effect is very impressive. It even uses 2x AA in 2D mode.

All of the cutscenes are videos with jacked up gamma, though. :(

Still, if you have a 3DS, it's worth getting. I won't be finishing it for a while now thanks to the Vita, but I will definitely get back to it at some point. It's an excellent game.

Also, nice avatar. ;)

It looks great on a portable. It also feels great, even without the Circle Pad Pro (second stick). It's not "console" good, but it's good.

The game however, is mixed. It's an odd amalgamation of "survival horror" RE and "action" RE -- it's pretty jarring at times and the story is really boring. The demo, IMO, is a bait and switch.

Overall it's not bad though.

For the FEB what free PSN game do you get?

It allows you to create your own community where you'll only be matched up with those who are part of said community. For instance, there is a NeoGAF Mario Kart community. If you are part of said community you'll only be matched up with those on NeoGAF.

Ah, that's cool too. I just want to be in the same party as the folks in the chatroom/community. Outsiders are welcomed to join too. Combining the XMB chatroom and Vita Party together would make sense.

I have tried out few demos from Japanese PSN store.

So far the mostly graphically impressive game for me is Dynasty warriors NEXT and Virtua Tennis 4. They look amazing, almost on par with the console versions ( I know it wasn't the most impressive graphics on the console, but still..)

Uncharted GA seems to have good details and lighting and stuff, but the sub-native resolution, AA really kills it. The flame is unacceptable. Is it any better in the actual retail version?

Same with Gravity Daze. If only it was native resolution with good AA, then it would have been perfect. But still the enormous environment and great art direction makes up for it.

But overall considering its launch title, I think it is very good. Hopefully the graphics will improve as developers get more accustomed to the hardware. And I really hope the try to stick with native resolution in the future.

the game looks great, the ship is awesome. More open levels look average but i can see more games having nice gfx in small areas with not many things going on. It is really a nice experience, like the one i am buying vita for too, home console gaming on handhelds :)

The 3DS is far more capable than the PS1, it's just that devs are still stuck in DS mode. We'll see some great looking stuff for it. Look at MGS3, that looks fantastic.

Loving the system, wanting to get another FEB Case. Anyone want sell their smelly one?

Heh heh, I used the FEB case wrongly yesterday. That's why it's too tight. Silly me.

Didn't realize I could lift the central flap up.

So... the Vita should go to the bottom, the central flap covers the screen. The card pouches on the other side of the flap hold the game cards, and the net compartment holds cables and other junk. There... everything in one. ^_^

MGS3? The demo looks like a watered down PS2 game with a very low framerate. Not impressive at all.

Revelations, on the other hand, looks better than most Wii games with some heavy shader usage and impressive level of detail.

agree. Not only the screen, but the OS also is night and day. Everything on 3DS is slow as hell, and multitasking is so limited. ALso the home/select/start buttons are really low quality. Vita instead, while not iphone level , looks as a quality device.

I find the comment on multi-tasking a little funny, considering the 3ds will allow you to keep its game running while checking basic tasks including web browsing ;-)

Compared to PS1? That's what he was asking about.

But yes, the 3DS is capable of visuals better than the Wii, especially since it's a lower resolution developers need to work with.

haha, it's not like the Vita can't do it since it's been shown to work withing the twitter app...

Why are we having this discussion anyway?

Yep I figured that out but the smell and the vita smelled like it for the next hour lol.

All I really want is the clan functionality from Resistance (1!) - I'd rather play in a playgroup/party with you guys than a bunch of filthy randoms. I don't mind killing randoms though, so it's just to have a group to roll with - so all I want to do is be able to send game invites to the clan/group so they can join my matchmaking party.

I don't think I care too much about party chat with a community, sorry, if I'm going to be talking to you and you might not be playing the same game as me, you had better be my personal friend :)

The smelly cases probably got stored in the same warehouse or container. My case smells fine. Yesterday it had a faint alcohol wipe smell since I left the wipe on top of the case.

I haven't really messed with Minis, PS One, and PSP games on my PS3 till now since I'm prepping for my Vita, but is the install bubble supposed to stay there without any way to organize them into a folder? Even after installing the Minis and the PS Ones, the bubbles remain. Anything I can do about that? Kinda breaks my organization.

Kind of, but with many more options and the ability to seemingly find people around you with a greater radius. I tried it at home and, to my surprise, it found a good 7 people within 10km of my house with Vitas (that had played a lot of Vita titles). Vita gives you a nice radial map populated with avatars of people nearby.

I have never once seen Streetpass for 3DS actually work simply because I don't know anyone else with a 3DS and it doesn't seem to reach out very far.

You don't need to know anyone with a 3DS which is the nice thing about it. Just throw it in your bag or backpack and have it on you. You'd be amazed at how often you get hits just randomly. It's kinda neat and I was taking my 3DS everywhere with me to get hits to play some of the built in games that use the Street Pass.

I was hoping the Vita would have something like Street Pass, and I thought Near was it, but the recent posts here make me think otherwise. Street Pass so far sounds more useful than Near, but I'll have to check out Near when I get it.

Resident Evil looks great. In fact after playing the demo for 10 minutes, I realized it was the real deal and went and bought the game right away. Definitely one of the best 3DS games out now.

well, multitasking is limited to 2 elements, afaik, but what is really annoying is how long it takes to load most of them, including e-shop, camera etc. I'd be fine without multistasking but with fast loading times for apps.

It's a new feature lol. You have to delete manually now.

Damnit...I've gone through 3 screen protectors so far. Can never get it right. This one is really close, but one tiny spec of dust got in near the center. GAAAAH

I really hate using screen protectors...but feel the need to protect this screen for some reason.

The R1 clan setup is indeed awesome. The XMB chatroom simply allows everyone to grow the group instead of waiting for appointed officers to add you. The GAF R1 clan used to chat in the video chatroom while waiting for people to show up. The XMB chatroom can serve the same function.

R1 party + lobby is also nice. Would be great if other games have it too. So implementing it in the OS will make the experience consistent.

I don't carry my 3DS around anymore (the crappy standby battery life kills that idea) but when I do, it's when I am travelling. That means me passing through airports, with lots of people who you'd think would also be bringing their 3DS with them to kill time at the gate/on the plane.

I pretty much NEVER get any StreetPass hits, ever. I took two flights in the last couple of months, one on Christmas Eve, and again a few days after New Year's (so post-price drop). Absolutely no hits, and I was passing through LAX. The last time I got StreetPass hits was the LA NeoGAF meetup...

I think StreetPass is a borderline useless feature, at least for me. Near is better IMHO because you just have to pass through the same area, but not necessarily at the same time, and it doesn't rape your battery.

Problem, Amazon.fr just sent me a €30 gift voucher for the Preorder box, its not part of my orginal order so I have to pay postage on it (€25). There's nothing in the preorder box worth 25 right?

I'd say Resident Evil and Street Fighter IV are the only two games that makes the 3DS feel quite a bit more capable than a PSP visually.

So, now I have the following items:

  • 32GB Memory Stick
  • Official Travel Case
  • Official Game Case
  • Wipeout 2048
  • Uncharted - Golden Abyss
  • Hot Shots Golf - World Invitational
  • Lumines
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

...notice there's no actual Vita on that list? Next week can't get here soon enough...

QUESTION: anyone know why the Vita is abandoning the MediaGo software that the PSP uses when connected to the PSP? The software itself has actually become rather useful (took way too long to get there, tho) for managing PSP content, so I'm kinda bummed that the Vita can't use it, too.

We're not. Let's move on.

My Vita arrives on the 22nd. How does the frame rate in UMVC 3 hold up versus the console iterations?

Framerate is better than the PS3 version. No framedrops at all, although there are some effects missing. Which, I must say, is a compromise I'll take every time. Especially in a fighting game.

I really don't see a use for streetpass whasoever. You are right. I have gotten a lot of hits with mine during my commutes, but I almost get a "so what" feeling. Near at least is integrated with the games you play like being able to leave gifts and such.

Streetpass to me it seems just lets you "connect" with random people, but the activites you can do with the people you get hits from is very limited.

For example, when I was at E3, i got a shitload of hits (200 in total) but you couldn't really do much with those hits. Already completed the quest thing and the puzzle stuff is just crap.

I would bang a hot farmer!
One thing that's annoying me is that WiFi is shut off when playing Uncharted (I knew about this) but it doesn't turn back on when I'm done with the game. I have to manually go into the settings and connect to my router.

Been away for a couple days, and this topic has exploded which I expected. But, I have a question for you folks...

Is it just me, or does the FEB system Case smell like some sort of rotting fish? WTF is up with that? Or is it just mine?

Yeah Streetpass is worthless to me too since I hardly get a hit and it kills the battery. By the time I actually want to play something I need to charge the device for 3 hours because I had the Street Pass feature on. Not even sure what good the hits from Street Pass are, though. Limited interaction. I get a Mii? Wow.

Is the hardware love affecting my brain or is Asphalt Injection (Gameloft) not bad?

I mean, the screen makes the game automatically look pretty appealing and it's your standard Burnout style racing game.

I'll probably buy when it drops a little in price.

I am about to finish UC on vita. I am really enjoying the console experience on a portable.

I hope we get more of this stuff.

I'm not close to finishing Uncharted GA yet, but I'm also loving the console experience, which it really is.

I'm amazed at how the game is still capable of translating nuanced animations and expressions, I just wish it were slightly higher resolution. But when playing, you definitely notice it less, and still manages to impress.

What "use" do you have from Streetpass? I haven't found anything useful with it since I bought it at launch. Near locates people near you (and you can message those people), rates games, let's you see what your friends have been playing,. I honestly don't see how you couldn't find it more useful than Streetpass.

Does no one else have an issue with the triggers? I can press them in lightly and they won't activate...I need to press a bit harder to get them to activate.

Anyone?

I need to know if this issue is with all Vitas or just some.

If you're playing Uncharted hold the left trigger down, but very lightly. Does it go in and out sometimes for you?

Near is pretty deep. Play with it some more to find out what it can do. It's a little confusing though. Sony should refine the UI further.

There should be no restriction using StreetPass like concept in Vita games. After all, they all use SkyHook, 3G or WiFi.

Mine doesn't do this.

I don't like that when I go into a game that turns off network mode, it cancels the download instead of pausing it, though.

Not me, but I'm pretty heavy handed.
