Stellvia of the Universe 6

Ah, the Astroball tournament, you were all waiting with baited breath to see how this would go, right? I know I was!

Actually the first game only took up five minutes or so, thankfully. In typical Stellvia fashion, this was yet again an episode devoted to the characters, for reasons I will shortly explain. As to the game itself, I was nearly disappointed there was no Sublimely Magnificient Shima Shot Mark III. In fact,
Shima fouls in 30 seconds and get's taken out of the game. A new record. Who didn't see that coming? Fortunately, the Big Four were both Big and Four enough to win with a man down.

So after that's cleared up, it's on to character development. I can see why this show places so much emphasis on it, after all, there is literally a class-size main cast and they all have potential relationships in the offing. Shima is yet again feeling a little down after
aforementioned failure
but thankfully
potential love interest
is on hand to cheer her up. Everyone is starting to comment about it, so I'm going to guess something will happen soon.

Speaking of characters, we have another new one this episode. Her name is Rinna
but despite being from a rival school (Ultima) appears to be a bit lonely
and has befriended the Stellvia crew. See picture below (that's her on the left)

stellvia6%205.png

Attention Duelists! My hair is telling me it's time to play Astroball!

The second game is Stellvia against "Odyssey" who are, well, jerks. If 90% of Stellvia students are moe females, then 90% of Odyssey appear to be over-confident and cocky males who even get their own haunting musical themes while they pontificate to Shima and co (the music in this show has been top drawer, by the way).

stellvia6%203.png

Plenty of comedy in this episode of course, mostly at
Shima's
expense. Though that comes to an end along with the end of the second game in a blaze of glory and surprisingly
awesome piloting skills from Shima, who seems as surprised as everyone else that she's this good
.

Very enjoyable, if a little on the cheesy side. Looks like the tournament is just beginning, but it's not nearly as bad as I imagined, given they've maintained a high ratio of character development and some plot advancement too.

Not sure where you're getting trainwreck from.
Isn't a trainwreck something that you don't want to see, but can't look away from?
The point, if there is a point, to forcing others to watch guiding others towards shows like Blood C, Arjuna and School Days is that these works ramp up over time before they arrive at some kind of glorious, painful climax. There's a downward progression to these works which is entertaining to experience from the outside.

Nisemonogatari is nothing like that.

duckroll said:
A trainwreck also has many possible outcomes though. Everyone in it could end up trapped but still alive as the train catches fire after crashing into the woods, with no rescue in sight as everyone burns to death slowly and painfully. Everyone on the train could miraculously survive inside the train even after it crashes right into the town hall, making the journey the most exciting, unpredictable, and thrilling event of their lives. People could start jumping off the train slowly before it completely derails, and survive to watch the actual crash safely from the distance. Etc.

Nise this is what people must mean when they say they had a religious experience.

Eureka Seven 18-29

When I first started this show, I didn't exactly have a high opinion of it. The characters were jerks and the plot moved at a very slow pace with unnecessary filler. However, there were moments of brilliance that kept me watching even if some scenes annoyed the hell out of me.

However, I can no longer talk about the redeeming values of this show because recent events have made me incredibly angry. Few fictional pieces of work will actually make me angry, but this just happens to be one of them.

From like 20-25 or something, the show became really good. Real consequences were starting to show for the actions of the characters.
Renton realizes he has been killing people and runs away, leaving Gekkostate in a deserved state of despair. Seeing them suffer after the way he was treated was pretty satisfying, especially with Holland. Not only that, but the kid ends up with the most likable duo in the show. Seeing Ray and Charles interact with Renton put a smile on my face. Previously the only sympathetic character in the show had finally found a bit of happiness in a comfortable family with a clean ship and kind replacement parents.

However, that didn't last. Because he had to
chase after a bullshit romance, he left the only place of mutual understanding he'd ever experienced. And once he gets back to Gekkostate, what happens? They throw him in the fuckin brig. He left a loving home for this kind of abuse? Yeah, Eureka is happy to have him back, but Holland being a fucktard and an all around asshole just made it painful to watch.

But nothing could prepare me for the events that would follow.
The only characters that I legitimately liked get killed, by a main character no less. Renton's reaction to Charles death was bad enough, but Ray's and the aftermath was just awful. He had the option to get revenge on his replacement parent's killer, yet instead, he saved him! A normal breakneck reaction would be to let the fucker die. Why not? Neither Holland nor the rest of the Gekkostate respects Renton nor were they even being sensitive when speaking to him. Talho selfishly asks Renton to save him while the rest of the crew just doesn't give a shit.

And the biggest bit of bullshit of all is the reason for the war in the first place and Renton's reaction to it. He's willing to
fight the whole world for a no-personality alien thing girl.
Is it romantic? Yeah, in the most douchebag way possible. When you're willing to
let other loved ones die for that, you know you have problems and probably lack the kind of empathy you need to get through life.

Now all of this wouldn't be so bad if the portrayal reflected it. But it doesn't. Everyone in Gekkostate has lost all sympathy, yet they are still portrayed as fun-loving rebels fighting for a noble cause. Even Renton, who I could at least tolerate, I can only see as an asshole that
no longer puts any weight into lives other than Eureka's. It would actually be really cool as a sort of "start of darkness" thing where Renton was willing to do anything for love and became a major villain.
The way it happened with (Guilty Crown spoilers)
Shu was great and had it happened here, it would have been the opposite reason with the same outcome and would be amazing.
But nope, Renton gets a super sympathetic portrayal even after this shit. He and the rest of Gekkostate are villains and they should be treated as such.

The only thing keeping me watching now is promise of more despair for Holland. I don't think I've wanted a character to suffer this much since forever. He is a jealous, irresponsible pedophile and bad things should happen to him. If he gets a happy ending, I will declare this one of the worst shows I have watched all the way through.

That's easily the worst OP song/animation they've done so far for the -monogatari series. Doesn't mean it's bad per se, just that it's nowhere near close to everything else so far. Except maybe Kaerimichi.

As for the episode itself:

The music was probably what made it absolutely ridiculous.

Nise this is what people must mean when they say they had a religious experience.

I think I saw God.

It's funny that you say that, because I believe that toothbrush scene actually falls under some of William James' categories for a mystical experience. And I quote:

"The first is ineffability: “it defies expression…its quality must be directly experienced; it cannot be imparted or transferred to others.” Second is a “noetic quality”: mystical states present themselves as states of knowledge. Thirdly, mystical states are transient; and, fourth, subjects are passive with respect to them: they cannot control their coming and going. Are these states, James ends the chapter by asking, “windows through which the mind looks out upon a more extensive and inclusive world"

The toothbrush sequence is certainly one that I'd describe as ineffable. I cannot convey what it's like to others through words of images, it must be experienced directly.

Nise is now a religion.

Despite having no nudity this episode, this Nise 8 is dirtier than any doujin I've ever read.

oh my Goooodddd

NOW you decide to go red eyes berserker mode, Saya? After pretty much EVERYONE in your class has either been nom nom nom'd or brutally mutilated? Is there like some sort of threshold you gotta reach for innocent people to die before you go red eyes or something?

Also what did her teacher mean by
"did you kill them all?"
And what was up with
her class being the only class present that day
AND WHAT IS UP WITH
THAT TALKING DOG?

I really shouldn't be asking questions with this show. I'm just gonna keep watching.

You know, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably have stopped watching by now. I don't like subjecting myself to things that I actively dislike.

This episode was pretty boring, actually, Talho is kind of annoying as well. Hopefully the 5th is better!

I've said a lot of things about this weeks episode of Nisemonogatari - but I didn't actually say that I found watching it to be a disagreeable experience.

Wait hold on I was just kidding before. You really ARE tsundere for this show? :p

Actually I don't know what to make of it for sure. The song/animation is actually incredibly catchy, I just don't know if it's an ear worm in the good sense or the Denpa sense?

Might have to wait a bit on that one. At the very least it's better than Renai Circulation, which is impossible to get out of my head no matter how much I want to.

Well, the song itself is gradually growing on me. Still don't prefer the animation though.
Also, I guess I should post the Rie Kugimiya version of Renai Circulation again, then.

Best Bake OPs are Kanbaru and Mayoi. Senjou's in both Bake and Nise are roughly the same, decent. Nadeko's OP is the worst. Karen > Tsubasa >= Tsukihi for the rest.

Holy fucking shit. I'm never ever underestimating the courage of SHAFT to be as perverted as humanly possible ever again, nor will I ever be able to look at a toothbrush the same way ever again.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some crow to eat and some teeth to brush.

also I kinda liked the op :<

Son, I think it's about time we had a talk. Your mother and I are very worried about this "cult" you've gotten involved in.
the cult of nise/shaft/shinbo/nisioisin/whatever is infinitely better than the cult of forced 16:9!

lmao you really are tsundere for it!

I'm thinking of marathoning Squid Girl after I finish marathoning Firefly.
sounds like a squidding good plan to me! de geso~

Is it anime that turns people into tsunderes, or tsunderes that are naturally attracted to anime?

Is this a case of you are what you eat?

Ultimate Girl 4

Cajun takes all the blame.

This time, it's Ultimate Girl Loli's turn to shine, as she takes on a
doctor monster, who wants to inject her. I'm sure you can already see where this is going. For the grand finale, the tentacle stethoscope is used, which naturally is attached to his crotch. yeah.

Cajun takes all the blame.

Last few minutes: Uh. Wut.

Oh god I can't stop now. I have to see this to the end. I have a lot of theories in my head at this point but I honestly don't know what to expect next.

I WARNED YOU ALL (a few weeks back with a cryptic picture of a toothbrush). BUHAHAHAHAHAHA!

YES! YES! YES!

Damn, I am excited as hell to watch this episode on Nise now. This is why I was so insistent on them getting to Tsuhiki Phoenix. Also, I really hope they kept the scene after in the anime, or at least what is alluded to, but I can understand not doing it.

PS: I will hopefully bear gifts soon if I can find anything.

What? I don't understand what is going on here. Who is who and why? I think without the manga the OVA makes no sense. But I'm a simple man, so busty women and nice action are enough for me.
