Also, off-topic of that: I'm really surprised whenever I see people who've not watched Sailor Moon before. In the 90's that was my gateway drug into anime.

I simply never really paid it much mind. I don't think I'd have appreciated it back in the day as I do now though.

Here's how I see it. Kyousuke's basic character motivation (at least at first anyway) is the desire to reconnect with his little sister. For what's apparently been quite some time, probably years, his relationship with Kirino has been one of cold indifference. But after accidentally discovering her hobby, she decides to confide in him. She came to him with a genuine plea of help. And he wants to help, because she is his little sister and no matter how much he wants to deny it, he does love her as such (how much he loves her... well I won't go into where that might be going but at the beginning that's definitely not the case).

The "wacky friends" was actually his idea, because Kyousuke was smart enough to realize that what Kirino was originally trying to do (make him play all of the eroge she plays so she can talk to him about them, etc.) wasn't going to work. She needed friends who were actually hardcore into this stuff at least somewhat close to her level. And over the course of that process they ended up being friends of his as well.

And yes, he's dealing with all of the stress of the situation, but again he's doing so because he doesn't want to lose what he's finally gained after all this time; Kirino's acceptance of him as her brother and not just some stranger living in the same house. He's enjoying the feeling of being needed by his little sister, and doesn't want to throw that away, so yes he does bend a little bit more with her. But there are times where he most definitely puts her in her fucking place (like Episode 11 at the party). Not the behavior of a doormat.

The part where he took the blame for eroge stuff was dumb though, no question (however it was fucking funny).

im sorry but defending your sisters blatantly pedophilic interests for the sake of an incestual romance (dont even try to deny it at this point) is so morally messed up that I cant see him as anything other than fuel for the pandering fire.
Perhaps thats why her friends were more entertaining, because their interests, while nerdy, were not super questionable.

My parents wouldn't let me watch it when I was a kid because they thought it would turn me gay.
It probably would have just resulted in my being exposed to hentai before I got into Pokemon.
I'm experiencing it for the first time.

Is there nostalgia for the (probably butchered) English dub? Did I miss out on anything?

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Spiral Labyrinth 1

It's great to get some more backstory for Yang, but the VA change and animation shift is going to take some getting used to.

Whenever I think Sailor Moon, the english OP is the first thing that comes to mind. It was great. The dub was good, too. (Had nothing to compare to at the time, and I was a kid so someone else can chime in on this)

You've probably answered this a billion times already, but have you played the game? (I'm inferring a no)

You're gonna really love the way the show turns out if not.

No, vita version needs to hurry.
Though Im curious what they do for the next three episodes with the case solved, though the fog is a compelling plotline

Gundam Seed HD ep 9
tumblr_m0ngxjEnzK1qbxqfpo1_500.png

Overall probably the worst episode yet. Some of the scenes seemed blurry and as if they didnt do anything at all. Litrally it appeared as if someone took some standard definition 240p image and scaled it up to 1080p or something. The darkened bolded lines around the characters, detail less textures, and awkward faces made a few scenes stick out badly. Only scenes that truly looked nice were ones that didnt really matter (panning view of Archangel, the Archangel captain and the bridge, and I think a few close up of Strike and Aegis fighting). Kind of disappointed with it visually based on what Ive seen of Age and what they were doing a few episodes ago in this.

Plotwise, well its gotten deeper and keeps me hooked, ignoring Flay who caused me to want to throw my sackboy at the tv numerous times
it was utterly laughable that she was litrally going to kill (as if she would) Lacus on the bridge. They made her so bad, that I couldnt feel for her when she was in tears.
I think it got good.
Nartale B, I think its her name, and bargaining Lacus was an interesting though embarassing move, I think Strike could have allowed them a victory

Spoilers for... Jupiter's "Talent".

Otherwise... no. Lot's of cuts, changed a male character to female, usual mid-90's editing/sound FX replacement etc. Still not as bad as what 4kids did to One Piece or Nelvana did to CardCaptor Sakura.

That's a whole lot of talent.

Guessing the gender-flip was
Zoisite
to whitewash the homoeroticism?

Music replacement was immediately noticeable. Pretty bad. Dub voices were passable; everyone sounded kind of bitchy but that might be because they were bickering in that particular scene. I should probably watch a full episode or two dubbed just for the experience.

nelvana can go to hell for what they did to CCS. thankfully i have the uncut pioneer set. It was a very enjoyable series.

I really liked Cardcaptors before I knew better :(

This was my childhood. lol expository theme song.

Behold, the power of Smile.
The Japanese communications service provider NEC BIGLOBE reported on March 8 that "PreCure" was the #6 most Tweeted and #1 hashtagged word in Japan from February 1 to March 1. Each were the highest positions for anime/manga related words in February. The reason for the extreme popularity was no doubt the sensational start of the newest TV series Smile PreCure! on February 5.
And then the rest of the article goes on to talk about how Peace is apparently the most popular and uses that as an excuse to post some fanart from Pixiv.

Iv seen some of cardcaptors. Its absolutely horrific.
Seeing how it is now and what i remember it is pretty much a travesty how much they changed it.

That out of the way, I like all 3 of
the new girls. Their personalities are great, and I look forward to seeing what they bring. Also of interesting development is Akito falling for Megumi? Annnnnnnd Yurika saw them kiss and they kissed?!?!? Duuuuuuude this is moving so fast. The tension is rising! Akito's new resolve is great.

Also, all the girls on this show are all pretty awesome. I don't hate anyone on this show yet and the cast is great. The OP is awesome as hell and has that epic trumpet!

That op is absolutely amazing and one of my favorites. Some ops from that era are so good they even made mediocre shows seem better.

The Light of El Cantare

Time to bring some balance to the force.

The amount of high-quality Smile Precure fanart being churned out on Pixiv every day is truly astounding. There's no doubt that it's a smash hit with otaku.

Coincidentally, I just finished Smile Precure 05:

Great stuff. In spite of her elemental affiliation, Reika isn't the ice queen I was worried she would be; she's polite and demure, but not to the point where she closes herself off from other people. She'll be a fine addition to the team.

I really hope that March fondles her hair in amazement every time she transforms. It's adorable.

I wonder if Peace subscribes to the Araragi Karen school of janken tactics.

Oh hey, it's the same technique that the girl in that EU propaganda ad used to fend off the scary brown and yellow people.

So good.

I was wondering how Reika was going to manage to charge her kiai since she doesn't seem to be the type to do it by screaming and bursting veins like a DBZ character
and the other Cures
, but somehow she did it.

Welp, no more Cure intros barring a mid-season twist. Time for some real action, and hopefully new merged transformation sequences to replace the terrible edits of the individual transformations we've been getting.

Funny you should say these two things.
I just can't get enough of seiyuu jokes. Shame that only one of them matches in this case, unlike the Sugita-Mizuhashi thing earlier.

Many people have seen some of the dub, but it's such a hackjob that it doesn't really count as actually watching it.

Why must you do this to me?
Of all the shows that i havent watched yet this is the hnnngiest.

Detective Conan 150-151:
Wow, that was actually a really good anime original case. There was a decent mystery, and Kogoro got to do a lot and was pretty awesome during the second part. It was definitely a refreshing change of pace, and it really stands out due to how different it is compared to the typical Detective Conan story. I wish there would be more filler like this rather than "The Detective Boys go on a trip and get into random hijinks".

Ah yes, the English dub. It's been mentioned a few times, but that's another thing I did forget about, too; that not everyone has seen it the way it's meant to be watched.

They combined episode 45 and 46 into one twenty minute long abomination and Complete fucking joke of an episode that angered me so much I swore off of watching that version forever.

Is Yu-Gi-Oh any better in Japanese?

Yeah, I would say it's quite a bit better in Japanese. That's not to say that it's a master piece, but the characters are actually decent, and most of the idiocy in the English version wasn't present in the original.

One (Many) thing(s) I thought super interesting about this episode was that
they actually dealt with some major issues that you don't ever see addressed nowadays. They actually address the many nationalities of Earth, the religions and cultures of everyone through both all the services provided and the chef's backstory, and they also go through the actuality of what it means to be a captain in their present time and even go as far as to question the need for their existence at all. Even the questioning and mutiny of the contracts is an awesome attention to all the details.
I was pretty surprised actually that all this was addressed when most shows now would totally skip the consequences of previous episodes that would lead to something like this.

Also, totally got more Ruri. There was a decent amount of Ruri here.

Yurika's stuggles still are funny and adorable.

Best parts of OreImo were the meta Kirino/Kuroneko arguments. Who on AnimeGAF could watch them now without recalling our own moustache vs. monocle debates?

Regulus Tera

Romanes Eunt Domus
The Knight in the Area 10:
  • I am sexually harassed by the bad animation and bad art. :(
  • They couldn't get any hilarious German for the Germans? Lazy.
  • I understand the need for making the protagonists shine and all, but it is very disappointing to see matches devolve into "Maradona vs Pelé" fantasy games. Giant Killing worked because it gave each member of the team a due weight -victories felt like a genuine team effort, and setbacks had more impact because it was made clear that everyone in the squad was working their arses off towards a goal. The Knight in the Area (and Súper Campeones to an extent) is very much more focused to particular character drama about Seven and Kakeru. They are the ones the audience is rooting for specifically, but by concentrating on their personal dilemma the direction siphons out much of the excitement a football match should convey.
  • A
    5-5
scoreline should, in theory, provide lots of entertainment value, but the way it was presented (
    moooooooooooooontageeeee
) made it clear that, right now, the animators don't give a shit about the sport itself.

tl;dr I rather be watching Giant Killing instead. Or even Chihayafuru.

Yeah, Nadesico is pretty unique in the way it touches on subject matter like this. I appreciate the approach the series takes, and it keeps doing stuff like that all the way through to the end. Exploring what would actually happen with the events which take place in your typical mecha anime is something that happens pretty frequently in the show.

And it manages to do all of that while also providing lots of funny moments. I really love how the series can just be taken completely on the surface, or you can actually think about everything that happens and find lots of subtext and commentary that you don't even notice at first.
