Exactly. It's really mindblowing design. How things just fit brilliantly. I'm still in awe of From Software. As much as I love my character if this was to be announced for PC with full steamworks for online I'd really consider buying a PC to enjoy this game at 60 fps.

at 80 my build is at

30 Vitality
37 Endurance
37 Dex
Strength 16

on my way to 120 would it be wise to up faith to 30 for sunlight blade and Vow of Silence? I'm planning to do a lot of pvp.

Take your Endurance and Dex to 40, then Faith to 30. Depending on what your attunement is, you can level that a bit for more spells, and level Vitality more, or if you feel comfortable with your Vitality, level Faith even more so you get more damage out of your spells.

Yeah that was my plan along with vitality.

with faith at 30 which bow is better pharis or darkmoon? I know bows are dex weapons but I believe darkmmoon has something to do with faith if you use certain arrows or am I mistaken?

Darkmoon does scale with Faith, but I think a Pharis bow at +15 with 40 dex will out-damage a Darkmoon even though the Darkmoon numbers are higher. Pharis bow is pure physical, Darkmoon splits. Magic arrows suck anyway.

Gotcha that's what I'm using right now. Nice to know. Now what to do with that extra soul..

For PvP, it's really tough to actually hit people with the bow, unless you are sniping someone who isn't moving, don't expect to land many shots. The Composite bow has a slightly faster firing rate that makes it easier to hit shots in PvP, but the range is very low.

The bow is mostly for pve purposes and I like that bows range. If I ever used it for pvp it would just be to pester people from very far away. For pvp I have my +15 Laito and Chaos Blade if my humanity ever gets passed 10. I had the other katana before and leveled that to 14 only to realize it has a completely useless strong attack compared the the Liato. So i turned it into a Chaos Balde.

also have Ricard's Rapier +10 and Lifehunt Scyth. I get whooped on when I use those but they are just there for when I want a change.

@The Xtortionist: Welcome to Dark Souls.
I don't mean to be rude but since this is your first playthrough, why do you ruin your experience by checking the wiki, builds & stuff?
Play the game with a normal generic build the first time so that you can experience almost everything and find what you like, discover and when you're done, make a new character with the weapons/build you like.

This is my advice. Stop spoiling the game and looking for things right now and go play it and enjoy the experience.

For me, it's the opposite. Gathering information before playing reduces the need to stop and ask questions. It gives me a smoother experience. I understand if someone else would see that as a negative.

I think the discoveries can be split into game mechanics & world content.

'Spoiling the game mechanics' overlaps a lot conceptually with 'clarifying the game mechanics' for Dark Souls, and I think this is fine -- as long as you stay away from the world content, the progression, locations & bosses spoilers.

Those things are amazing to discover on your own (especially in the context of the interconnected world of this game), and I think spoiling them beforehand takes a lot from the Dark Souls experience.

In the same time, the map is definitely not the territory and this feels especially true in Dark Souls, where an enemy can be a picture and a few characters littered on a web page, but within the game itself it can be an intense life-or-death affair .

This is one of my favorite images from any video game ever:

That is an overhead image of all the zones from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. The game is a 3D Metroidvania. It is completely devoid of loading screens. It's all interconnected, very similar to what Dark Souls did with its world. I've been hoping someone would do something similar for Dark Souls, and it seems like someone managed to make a rough, hand drawn map detailing where the zones all are relative to each other. It isn't going to shatter your view of the game, but it's pretty neat.

Ash Lake was pretty incredible.
I wonder if Lordran is actually that huge, or if each one of those trees signifies another world. Almost like Norse mythology, only much much much much more epic.

Making good progress. Made it through Capra Demon and into the depths last night. Picked up a curse though, ouch! Does the vendor in the firelink sewer sell the item I need to remove it?

There are many nations mentioned in lore that we never get to see. I think the trees basically run underneath the entire world, which I think might be flat in this universe.

Yes, but it's much cheaper to get it from the guy on top of the Parish.

Eh, I don't see a reason to think the world is flat. It can be difficult to see the curvature of the horizon from really flat places in the world as it is, no reason to put it in a game.

For PvP it's better to min/max one type of magic, either Faith or Intelligence, so you get better gains from your weapons and spells.
Is it a viable option to focus on one kind of magic and equip the catalyst/talisman that changes the scaling stat of the opposite kind, i.e. focus on intelligence, equip the talisman that scales miracles to intelligence instead of faith? I know in that scenario you'd still have to meet the minimum faith requirements to cast the miracle in the first place, so that might be of rather marginal utility...

I genuinely haven't even touched a magic that wasn't pyromancy, I find all the catalysts and talismans bewildering. Near as I can tell they have some sort of base scaling with the stat, then additional scaling above that? I have no idea.

Imma just gonna go stab some things with the pointy end of a sword now...

This game is evil.
You mean I have to murder some of those Firekeepers to further strengthen my flask?
Evil. Evil. Evil. I'm not sure if I can do it.

Different catalysts and talismans will have higher MagAdjust depending on your INT/FAI respectively. At 40+ INT, Logan's Catalyst or Tin Crystalization Catalyst (more powerful but halves your casts) are the best options. At 40+ FAI, the best talisman is darkmoon.

Yeah this would be true, but if you wanted to use heal or something i could see this being viable. But upping faith to 30 to use sunlight blade and then using a talisman that scales with int seems a bit silly.

What? No?
Pretty sure to get to +7 in one playthrough you need to
kill a firekeeper.

Sullichin

i dont even know what that means. does it have something to do with one of the covenants?

Kind of, after the Ornstein and Smough boss fight, if you
kill the image of princess gwynevere
, Anor Londo will go dark.

Alternatively, Did you kill
Gwyndolin
? This would make the keeper hostile as well. EDIT: yup sounds like you killed him.

if thats the covenant ring boss down stairs then yes.

oh well, the firekeeper is dead now. she just sat there all smug anyways. i didnt like her that much.

No, that's someone else, but the effect is the same. She's in the Darkmoon covenant, and you offed her boss.

Does anyone know if you can have 10 characters on the HDD and 10 in the cloud? (360) Any risk of one overwriting the other or such. I'm not at all familiar with how the cloud saves work.

Sometimes the scale confuses me, I'd like to see one of those fleshed out cutaway designs of the entire structure of dark souls

something like this crazy map

The map above isnt that correct imo, seeing as you can clearly see demons ruins from above the tomb of the giants, and the cliff facing the endless forest doesnt directly show ash lake "does it?

anyway, it almost seems like Anor lando is situated on a giant landmass sorrounded by the endless forest, as if it were some primordial island in the vast ocean. Kind makes you go ....Woah.

I swear when I was near the end of my playthrough I thought it would be cool of someone drew a sketch or a 3D map of the world and how it all connects with each other to give more perspective and give you a chance to see the big picture.

This obviously isn't what I was thinking about but it's still cool and the only thing we have.

I have 10 Characters on my HDD and then 3 Characters on a Memory Unit, I would assume Cloud Storage would work the same. And they shouldn't overwrite because when you boot the game you have to choose which memory device, so they won't even interact with each other.

Can you copy a save file to the cloud? Like for safe keeping? If I lost my character I would be suicidal. However my connection drops out often and sometimes I'm forced to play in offline mode(hate the way the game kicks you back the title when xbl logs out).

No, I tried a while ago, the save is copy protected so it can only be "moved" not copied among storage devices. I haven't had a file corrupt and I've had freezes, connection drops and a couple rage quits, so you should be okay.

Just killed the Capra Demon on the fifth try. The first four times I died as soon as I entered the fog, basically tried running past him to the stairs to take out the dogs first and every time got cornered and fucked because of camera spaz out with lock on.

Now to the Depths - *sees butcher look up from his meat slab and walk in my direction* Yep, that's enough for tonight, my jagged nerves can only take so much!

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
This one time I turned off my PS3 to avoid an invasion that would have been really bad... my heart was in my throat and I was overcome by instant regret... but everything was ok in the end.

Still... don't recommend that. But save files seem to be pretty hearty so far. Never had a corruption in so many hours of playtime.

Yes you can on PS3. But it's restricted to PS+ members.

Something I’ve never been able to figure out....

Sometimes when I play I hear an explosion like something has died (in the distance). I then “absorb” reddish energy, but gain no souls. What is this?

Probably getting another Estus Flask from a player Kindling the bonfire nearest to you in their world. Next time it happens, see if you get another Flask.

I can help tomorrow, if you're still stuck. Probably got a spare BKGA too. Just send me a message on PSN (ID: W0Wbaggr).

I beat them like 5 minutes ago :p

I would love to do co-op in other places and have that spare BKGA :)

I had 1 flask left (I had 15 before the fight because of the 2 damn ghosts right before the fog gate, and had no transient curse left), and I equipped humanity just in case.

I took the advice and farmed some souls so I could bring my faith to 30 and use sunlight blade (awesome, but why only one use? :<), and used it on my 2 handed Demon Greataxe +14

I think I took them 750+- damage with each hit, but I used my Combustion/Great Combustion more than my weapon
I now have 338K souls, but should probably have 1 million with all my deaths :) I didn't even bother picking the souls back every time I died lol

35 VIT & END, 42 STR, 22 DEX, 20 INT & FAI

I don't know what to invest in.
I don't think there are any more must have miracles that require more faith? Should I invest in faith just for the scaling? I can pretty much use any weapon I want except for the DGA with 1 hand, but I don't know if that's worth investing 4 points in. It's a fast weapon while 2 handed, but is it as fast while you hold it in 1 hand? As for INT, I find sorcery pretty awesome, but I don't plan on using it with this character.

I guess I could invest more in VIT or END, although I'm pretty happy with them like they are now

Can you absolve sins multiple times? Can I betray a covenant, absolve my sins, join and repeat again?

Can I join Nito's covenant after I placed the lordvessel?

I am just a touch ahead of you. Invest in curse removal. =)

The lost Izalith/DemonRuins thing seems a bit flawed. I see that now. I still think it is neat for contextualizing the scope of everything relative to everything else.

Yeah. I'd love to see an overhead version like the Soul Reaver map, or a full one 3D model of it. I still thought this was neat, though.

I lost my mind when I was able to heal Solaire with a Princess Guard spell. He had just been slammed by Smough's hammer and I ran over to him and casted the spell, fully healed him, I felt AWESOME.

You just blew my mind, I thought it only affected human phantoms. I didn't think there was any way to heal NPC phantoms.

I just started playing this over the weekend. It's really good, I'm still early on I think and even though at times I feel like I'm doing alright I still die pretty often. I've just rung the first bell after the Gargoyle dudes and now I don't really know what to do. I tried to go to that Londo place but there were loads of ghosts and they totally owned me and now I don't have any of that Transient curse thing.

any suggestions or tips would be much appreciated, really enjoying the game.

Man, this game has given me a new appreciation of level design.
I want to go back & play Soul Reaver now lol.

I wish someone would make a definite list of these type of games with killer level design so people can find similar games that they might have missed over the years.
Soul Reaver, Shadow Man, Batman Arkham Asylum, Ninja Gaiden Black, Metroid Prime...

There is a door in between solaire & the bridge that the dragon scorched you with. It leads down to the next area.
You get the key to open it from that area with the armored boar. After you get ambushed by some zombies.
