Max Payne 3 Design and Tech video on Bullet Time - OUT NAO

I'm just out to get you after I saw those shoes you bought in the fashion thread ;) I'm only kidding around people, but I do think a shorter title is better. Much better.

Oh... oh, I see, it all comes back to the shoes. Like all the bad things that happened in my life, it began with the purchase of unusual shoes.

New interview with James McCaffrey

http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/m...payne_is_more_demanding_than_ever_before.html

Q: Max Payne 1 was a tale of revenge; the sequel was a tragic love story. When acting as Max Payne, do you get a sense that his misfortune continues in the third instalment?

James McCaffrey: Oh, definitely. Max has been trying to drink his demons away, and the painkillers are a way of trying to keep a brutal part of his past at bay. But unfortunately for Max, escaping his life by following Passos to Brazil doesn't change as much as he'd like. All hell breaks loose.

Q: This game takes Max away from New York City for the first time in the series, and quite a few eyebrows were raised when it was revealed that the story would be (partly) set in Brazil. Do you think that Max's character allows for the story to be set in any location?

JM: The new setting is perfect. Max is the same guy – a little older - and he ends up in Brazil out of happenstance. A guy who he bumps into helps him out of a jam, and offers him work protecting a rich family. It sounds like a simple job and it should be, but he has no idea what he's getting into. It's almost like the Wizard of Oz. The setting doesn't give you a reason to care about Max, it's the other way around - Max gives you reasons to care about the setting. And Max's demons go wherever he goes.

Q: Given the change of setting, do you think Max Payne 3 still feels like a neo-noir story? And if so, how much of your performance as an actor do you feel contributes to the feeling of the game?

JM: There are definitely still noir elements to the story, and that will come out when people finally get to play the game. In terms of how that feeling comes across, a lot of that comes down to the character, but I'm really just saying the dialogue. So much of the work has been done for me by Rod Edge and Rob Nelson and the Rockstar guys, who really help make the Max that you see on the screen.

Q: You've been the voice of Max Payne for over a decade now. How do you feel that the character has changed over this time?

JM: The changes aren't that radical under the circumstances. Max goes through a lot of changes over the course of the story. If you see Max in New York he doesn't look much different from the guy he was in the original games.

Max is a real character who changes and grows, and I think that's why a lot of people like him. In the third game, he's older, he's been through a lot, and it shows through his personality, the way he dresses, the way he looks. There are plenty of guys who've reached a point in their life where they think shaving their head is a good idea and by the time you reach that point in the game I think you'll understand.

Q: For the first two entries in the series, you only provided Max's voice. This time you've been enlisted for full motion capture. How did the processes differ and what does advancing technology allow you to bring to your performance?

JM: In the first two games, it was mostly just me standing in a sound booth taking directions. I'm not that familiar with the games business in general outside of my work on Max, but I know the technology has changed a lot since then. The Rockstar guys had created huge sets for us to act out the scenes on, so bringing that physicality into the character made things flow more naturally.

The Rockstar guys would have me running up stairs and diving off objects – it was more physically demanding than I had expected, that's for sure.

Kotaku posted a surprisingly good read and write up today all about their time with multiplayer. Definitely worth checking out and has me more pumped for multiplayer:

This past weekend, Rockstar started airing a TV commercial for Max Payne 3. It features scenes pulled from the game's single-player mode. The commercial stunned me, to be honest, because it had reminded me that there's a single-player mode worth caring about in Max Payne 3. I'd nearly forgotten, because in my mind Max Payne 3 has morphed into a multiplayer game, a game whose solo mode will be relevant in May, but whose multiplayer has the chance to be the reason we're still talking about and playing Max Payne 3 in June, July and, surely Rockstar hopes, for many months beyond that.

If Rockstar finally has a multiplayer mega-hit coming it'll be thanks to their own Max Payne-like effort… they scoped the multiplayer scene, they took it slow, they aimed and now, with a leap, they're taking their shot.

Talked with Rockstar, I tried to get the GAF emblem in the game to use for the GAF crew but because of time restraints and licensing it wasn't possible. However Rockstar did assure it would be possible to create the emblem via the online "Emblem Editor" which will be available at launch!!! Another upside is Rockstar may be crafting something special for the OT if time permits...

Anyone else preorder from GameStop or a Rewards member? I just got an email stating that for being a Rewards member I'll be getting another bonus in the game in the form of the Silent Killer loadout including 2 unlockable Bursts and an Anti-Tank Launcher.

I am excite!

Seriously, any idea when that part 2 mp video is supposed to drop? Seems like they put a serious amount of effort and resources into the multiplayer for this game, and im guessing that next video is really gonna knock it out of the park

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Have they specified how much of the game is set in Brazil?

They're saying on the official site that it'll be a couple of weeks...so maybe next week? LOL

Seems like 60/40 in favor of Sao Paulo with 40% being flashbacks to New York.

I also got that e-mail. I went to my local Gamestop earlier today to ask about it and the clerk says, "yes, you got it."

Every screen/interview/tidbit of information gets me hyped for this game.

This has become my least favourite thread because of it. It reminds me that it's 3 weeks away. Just out of my reach.

why can't R* fucking release the name of their character artist/promo art guy for Max Payne 3? Are they afraid of head hunters or something?

I know I ask that question myself. It's probably any of these people(Rockstar Games in house art directors): Joshua Bass, Rob Nelson or Aaron Garbut.

I bought from their download service for PC and I didn't get an email. Hope, I get in on it too.

I'm excited to try the Gang Wars mode with the mechanics of this game. I love these kind of "shifting goal" modes like Warzone in Killzone 2 + 3, or Team Objective in Uncharted 2 + 3. Easily the most fun I've had with shooters since my fatigue of the genre set in a few years ago. They make the best use of the map, and reward movement as opposed to camping in deathmatch variants or normal objective modes.

I had it preordered on Zavvi for around £34/35 thanks to a voucher code but I just cancelled that thanks to the Amazon UK price. :p

This really does sound surprisingly impressive. I remember being apathetic to the idea of MP when it was first confirmed, but they've definitely piqued my interest.

So, R* announcing those PC specs today has been interesting. I was reading them on my iPhone before I left for work this morning and was thinking "oh wow, people are going to be hyped, sounds like this could be pretty damn impressive with a beefy rig" but it doesn't seem like that's the case at all. A fair amount of people actually seem a little pissed off...the reaction is kinda confusing to me to be honest.

I get that the 35GB game size is a bit shocking, but as with all things Max Payne 3, the reaction isn't warranted. We have no reason, as of right now, to believe that the game won't be optimized.

My only worry now is that with the 360 version having the single player split across 2 discs, how will the game be "seamless with no loading screens" if I have to switch discs halfway through? I'm hoping you can install the 2nd disc and avoid the disc swapping.

I'm surprised at how in-depth the multiplayer seems to be, I'm guessing Rockstar London must of done all of the multiplayer stuff given the MP lead designer is based in London. So far I've got a group 5-6 friends, who only a couple have even played a Max Payne game, who are hyped and going to the midnight launch.

Ready to cringe? Here's GameStops' commercial for the cemetery map you get for preordering...

...actually isn't that bad at all. Glad I got my Special Edition from GameStop though as right now I'm getting the cemetery map, the Pill Box and Silent Killer loadouts for multi.

There's no way the game is bigger than GTAIV, the PC version is probably just uncompressed. I'm sure it's one disc. Even if it's 2, they'll probably pull a Battlefield 3 and split the game single/multi on disc 1/disc 2 respectively.

Oh my God... a Gamestop trailer that's not... offensive?

I'm actually hyped for that scene in the SP. And a ten year old mystery is finally solved: Max's daughter's name is
Rose Payne

I liked it. I look forward to that scene, the beginning certainly looks melancholy. And the theme's there!

Almost perfect. Except for the guy doing the voice over at the end. They need to replace him. Immediately.

Oh man, that was kinda cool actually. So great to hear some narration! McCaffrey still sounds perfect after all these years. But that looks like single-player, no? Interesting choice for a multiplayer map ad.

As for the disc thing, I don't really mind. One disc swap is negligible for me. I'm just wondering why this game is so big. The massive size on the PC, two discs here. Maybe it's longer than we've been thinking?

This game is begging for a theater mode/console commands for screenshots.

I wish there was such a thing for consoles. Since the firefights will be different each time you replay them, it would of been a cool option to have a theater mode where you can record and upload your own clips to the Social Club to share.

I mean if Rockstar looked at what other shooters like COD were offering then I would of thought a theater mode would be a given. =/

Theater mode would be awesome.

It'd be even more awesome if they had a Machinima mode like Uncharted 2 did. That mode was amazing.

We welcome you with open arms and the threads to do it.

Those threads, my goodness- I've followed them for quite some time and marveled at some really amazing photo ops by GAF. I'd love to take part with Max Payne 3- surely my attempts may be futile at first but who knows! Me, a PC player?! I figured this evolution should have taken flight sooner. To the unknown depths of Master Race gaming bliss!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, dreamfall, don't do it! Stay with us, your console brethren! We'll get the game first! Trust me, it'll still play and look good! Don't you see, there's no return from the PC! Once you're in, you're in forever!

To my CONSOLE BRETHREN, A WAR CRY. To the glorious 30 fps, two disc, beautiful controller experiences you will always have a merry place in my heart. As for Max Payne, you must believe I'll play it on console first (hell, we've been waiting for 9 years, two more weeks I can not stand for). But soon after, I shall leave the ranks to join the glorious PC GAF screenshot thread. A rally, for I have seen the light.

Edit: And to the ever so inviting PC GAF, I must say my apprehension is slowly being driven off ! My appreciation/respect for you guys is way deep!

sigh

It'll probably be a while before I can get the pc version, simply because I know my rig couldn't handle playing it at a steady 60 fps, even discounting the silly system reqs Rockstar has released.

Looks like 360 it is.

hush hush now, we've got that covered here in the Kingdom of Heaven, my friend.
The PC legion knows no bound and crosses, in fact, every limit.
You want 30 fps? You got 30 fps, You want a gamepad? I'll shower you with more gamepads you could dream of.

Don't do it man. The master race moniker is just to hide their gluttonous, lazy lifestyle. Never having to leave the house to get a game because of Steam, never leaving the sweaty computer chair because they don't have to swap discs, Steam/Amazon digital sales draining their life savings.

Stick with consoles man. It's healthier.

nah, but seriously I'm looking to get a gaming PC sometime around summer. Must play Diablo III.

I have been thinkinh about doing this too.. but the spec differences for big games makes me think it will be outdated within a year... And then there are the little issues with windows, steam, etc. But i'd sure love to play these games at the highest possible fidelity.

Last weekend PayneReactor, and also a handfull of other fansites, got the unique opportunity to travel to Rockstar Games in New York City. We all got our hands on some single and multiplayer. While still recovering from the trip, we're already busy with writing an article about the venture and our hands-on time with Max Payne 3. The article will be released on May 2nd along with new, exclusive screenshots. Be sure not to miss this, as the weekend was AMAZING!

Nah, you're good. It says valid for all existing pre-orders. I've seen them add credit offers in the past long after I've pre-ordered something and I always still got the credit.
